<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Voltage regulator device The present invention relates to a voltage regulator device.
Main patent No. 359204 relates to a voltage regulating device which is characterized by means for rectifying the voltage of an alternating voltage current source, a filter capacitor, a charging circuit for charging said capacitor from the rectified voltage, this charging circuit comprising the winding of a saturable reactance having a core with a substantially rectangular hysteresis loop, and a discharge circuit for said capacitor, this discharge circuit comprising said winding and the anode-cathode space of a tube controlled by the voltage across said capacitor.
This device therefore uses a saturable reactance comprising a core whose hysteresis loop (magnetization curve B, H) has approximately a rectangular shape. The impedance of such a winding is very low when the core is saturated and very high when it is not. To cite a practical case, the current flowing through this winding for a given voltage and frequency can drop from a value of around 8 amps when the core is saturated to a value of around 10mA when the core is not.
This reactance thus operates roughly like a switch which can be controlled by changing the core from the saturated state to the unsaturated state or vice versa; this switch obviously does not have a real position corresponding to an open circuit.
In the various embodiments described of this device, a bridge rectifier is used, and, in certain cases, this has drawbacks. Further, it has been found that it is not always judicious to pass the current of the discharge circuit of the filter capacitor through the winding arranged on the load circuit, because this imposes certain limitations. The aim of the present invention is to avoid these limitations and drawbacks and in particular to allow the use of a voltage doubling rectifier instead of a bridge rectifier. Among the advantages of such a rectifier over a bridge rectifier, it can be stated that the number of rectifier diodes is reduced.
In an apparatus intended to withstand a wide range of ambient temperatures - for example in an apparatus used in tropical regions - this represents a significant saving because rectifiers capable of withstanding such conditions are very expensive.
The voltage regulator device which is the object of the present invention is characterized in that it comprises means for rectifying the voltage of an alternating voltage source, a filter capacitor, a charging circuit for charging said capacitor from rectified voltage, this charging circuit comprising a winding of a saturable reactance having a core with a substantially rectangular hysteresis loop, and a discharge circuit for said capacitor, this discharge circuit comprising a new winding arranged on said core and the anode-cathode space of a tube controlled at least by the voltage present at the terminals of said capacitor.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, five embodiments of the device according to the invention and an explanatory diagram.
Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are the diagrams of these embodiments, respectively.
Fig. 3 is the explanatory diagram.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, an alternating input voltage is applied to terminals 1 of the primary winding of a transformer 2 whose secondary winding is connected to a diagonal of a bridge comprising four rectifiers 3. One end of the second diagonal is connected to one of two output terminals 8 through a winding 4 arranged on the core of a saturable reactance, this core having a substantially rectangular hysteresis loop.
A filter capacitor 5 is mounted between the terminals 8 as is a potentiometer 73 which supplies by its cursor 72 a voltage to a direct current amplifier 71 which amplifies this voltage to apply it to the control grid of a tube. 61. This tube is mounted in series with a second winding 41 of the saturable reactance, between the output terminals 8. A resistor 90 is connected between the ends of the output diagonal of the rectifier bridge. In fig. 1, as in the other figures of the drawing, the letters S and F are used to indicate the beginning and the end of the windings and these are supposed to be all wound in the same direction.
Resistor 90 produces what may be called a bias current through winding 4. The rectified current flows through winding 4 to the upper output terminal (Fig. 1) so as to produce saturation. of the core in one direction, while the bias current flows in the opposite direction to produce a near-saturation state of the core in the opposite direction. The tube 61 provides, by means of the winding 41, the required control of the magnetization of the core. The magnetization produced by the current from the tube through the winding 41 opposes that due to the current flowing through the resistor 90 and the winding 4.
The action of the tube current, varying with the gate potential, produces a resulting magnetization such that the output voltage is maintained at the required level.
There is a difference between the circuit shown in fig. 1 and that shown in FIG. 1 of the main patent, as regards the control of the tube 61 and that of the tube 6 of FIG. 1 of the main patent.
The control envisaged for the tube 61 has an advantage in certain cases, because if a preamplification of the voltage to be applied to the gate of the control tube is necessary, a single amplification stage is sufficient for this preamplification, while in the case of fig. 1 of the main patent, a two-tube amplifier must be used.
In the second embodiment, which is shown in FIG. 2, only two rectifiers 31 and 32 are used instead of the bridge of four rectifiers. Likewise, instead of a single filter capacitor, two similar filter capacitors 51 and 52 are employed. The secondary winding of transformer 2 is connected to the terminals of a circuit comprising the rectifier 31, a winding 42 arranged on the core of the reactance and the capacitor 51; it is also connected to the terminals of a circuit comprising the rectifier 32, a second winding 43 arranged on the core of the reactance and the second capacitor 52.
The two windings 42 and 43 are magnetically opposed, as indicated by the letters S and F, with respect to the charge current in one and the discharge current in the other. The anode-cathode space of a control tube 62 is connected between the junction point of elements 31 and 42 and the output side of capacitor 52, and a voltage proportional to that produced between the output terminals is applied to a terminal 7 connected to the control grid of tube 62.
The voltage on this terminal 7 can be obtained in various ways, for example by means of a potentiometer and a DC amplifier as in the embodiment of fig. 1. The operation of the rectifier circuit shown in fig. 2 is illustrated by the diagram of FIG. 3, the upper line of which represents the current (as a function of time) through the rectifier 31 and the lower line likewise represents the current through the rectifier 32.
Period C is that of the alternating voltage source. A winding (42 or 43) being included in the circuit of each half-wave rectifier (31 or 32), and the current pulses of one half-wave occurring alternately (fig. 3), we see that the effect on the core of the two windings 42 and 43 is the same as if one employs a rectification of the two halfwaves.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 4 differs slightly from that shown in FIG. 2. The modification is that the anode of tube 62 is not connected to the junction point of elements 31 and 42. An additional fine wire winding 44 is used with the anode of tube 62 being connected at one end. of this winding. The advantage of an increased number of turns in the tube circuit is that for a given number of ampere-turns,
less current is required from the tube and a smaller tube can be used. The extent of the reduction in tube current which can be achieved in this way is limited by the fact that the voltage drop due to the passage of direct current through winding 44 deprives the tube of some portion of the current. supply voltage available.
Fig. 5 shows an embodiment slightly modified with respect to that shown in FIG. 2. The modification consists of a few additional turns 45 wound on winding 42 and mounted in series in the output circuit. The purpose of these additional turns is to compensate for the reverse rectified current.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 6 includes the various features described above. Its construction is evident from the drawing, where the same reference numerals as before are used for like elements. It is obvious that the rectification is carried out by a voltage doubling rectifier comprising the diodes
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
31 and 32, as in fig. 2, and that the control, by the output voltage, of the magnetization of the core of the reactance is ensured by the winding 41 on the core as in the case of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1.
The rectifiers used in the various embodiments described tend to let a certain current flow in the opposite direction, which obviously tends to limit the control range of the tube. This fault can be reduced or eliminated by passing the load current through a few turns wound on the reactance in the desired direction to oppose the magnetization due to the reverse rectified current. If an additional winding formed by these turns is used, this winding will obviously introduce a positive reaction and, therefore, care must be taken that it is not able to cause instability.
