On voit aussi sur la fig. 2 qu'en raison de la proximité des colonnes le bord avant de la chaise supérieure ou de son coussin ne se trouve que légè rement en avant du bord avant de la chaise infé rieure ou de son coussin. Le degré de ce décalage et la limite de la proximité des deux colonnes peu vent être déterminés dans certains cas par l'épais seur et le contour des coussins, en particulier du coussin de dossier et de la portion du coussin de siège qui est adjacente au dossier ;
Chair stacking with other identical chairs The present invention relates to a chair stacking with other identical chairs.
In some rooms it is frequently necessary to provide a large number of people with chairs which at other times must be removed in order to have a free floor area. The storage of removed chairs poses a problem solved by a compact stacking arrangement requiring much less space, and which is preferable to that of folding chairs, in which the seat folds into a position substantially parallel to the backrest. so that the folded chairs can be placed vertically close to each other.
However, folding chairs are most often neither comfortable nor aesthetic, because it is necessary for comfort that the backrest and the seat of the chair have a surface curved to the body of the user; this need persists, even if the seat and back of the chair are covered with cushions. On the other hand, chairs with aesthetic contours cannot be folded and stacked tightly against each other.
In addition, in column chairs, the seat of which is rigidly fixed on the upper end of said column, itself fixed rigidly on a base whose diameter is large enough to provide good stability, the seat and the column, either the base and the column, or both of them hamper the placement of two chairs on top of each other and prevent a compact stack from being formed.
One of the aims of the invention is to provide a column chair which is aesthetic and which can be stacked closely with other identical chairs. The chair according to the invention comprises a vertical column at the upper end of which is fixed the seat of the chair and at the lower end of which is fixed a base for supporting the assembly.
It is characterized in that said seat com carries a notch extending from its front edge to a point adjacent to said column, to receive the column of a second chair perposed to the first, whose column is at the same time received in an opening in the rear of the base of the second chair and extending outward from a point adjacent to the column of the chair.
To stack the chairs, a chair is lifted slightly from the floor and its column is inserted into the notch in the seat of another chair resting on the floor, then this column is moved to the inner end of the floor. this indentation. A third chair is then raised and its column is introduced into the notch in the seat of the upper chair; these operations are repeated until a desired battery has been obtained.
To avoid the possibility of striking the base of the raised chair with the base of the chair resting on the floor, the base is preferably given a vertical dimension substantially smaller than the. vertical dimension of the chair seat.
On the other hand, if this sizing condition is fulfilled, the bases of the various chai are suspended by their columns, since each seat rests on the seat of the chair immediately below.
It is understood that any particular maximum dimension, for example of the means of the base on which the column is fixed, with respect to the vertical dimension at any particular point of the seat or of the backrest or at the same time of these two elements, can determine the interval between the bases of two adjacent chairs vertically in the stack.
Ordinarily, the thickness of the seat cushion, and in some cases of the seat and back cushions, is large enough, compared to the vertical dimensions of the base providing strength and stability, to achieve between the bases the desired interval allowing convenient stacking.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the chair according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view thereof. Fig. 2 shows it in plan.

Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a plate supporting the seat of the chair at the upper end of the column.
Fig. 6 is a section taken along line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a section taken along line 7-7 of FIG. 4.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 4 inclusive, the chair comprises a structure 1 forming seat 3 and backrest 5, made by molding a plastic material, for example a polyester resin reinforced with a fiber, such as sisal fiber, glass or other suitable fibrous material.
This structure 1 is molded in a single piece to the desired dimensions, so as to have the strength and rigidity necessary to support the weight of a person seated on the chair and also to resist bending or torsional forces. which the seat and back of a chair must normally support during ordinary use. The structure 1 is fixed to a column, at the upper end of the latter, by means of a device which will be described later.
The contours of the structure 1 forming the seat and backrest meet the requirements of design and comfort; the seat 3 of the structure 1 has a concave shape in the direction from the front to the rear and in the transverse direction, so as to give more comfort than a flat seat. The backrest 5 may have a concave shape to adapt to the back of a seated person.
As seen in fig. 4, an inner envelope 7 is arranged on the upper face of the seat 3 of the structure 1 and extends onto the front face of the backrest 5. It is formed by the pulp of paper impregnated with asphalt. This inner envelope 7 can be maintained by an adhesive material, on the upper face of the seat and on the front face of the backrest 1; it can extend, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4, over the front edge of the seat, the upper edge of the backrest and the side edges of the seat.
The marginal parts of this envelope are separated from the corresponding parts of the structure 1 so as to form a peripheral groove 13, in which the edges of a filling fabric 11, which covers the exposed face of a cushion, can be accommodated. 9, fixed by an adhesive material on the upper face of the inner casing 7. This groove 13 is produced by forming a rebate 15 along all the marginal parts of the inner casing 7.
The edges of the fabric can be folded over the edges of the cushion 9, introduced into the rebate 15 of the inner casing 7 and glued to the surface of this rebate. The cushion 9 is preferably made of a foam rubber; the adhesive material used is an adhesive material capable of bonding the foam rubber to the inner casing 7 impregnated with asphalt.
The first step is to assemble the inner envelope 7, the cushion 9 and the fabric 11, covering the cushion and glued to the rebate of the internal envelope; then, this assembly is glued to the structure 1, after having mounted the latter on the upper end of the column by means of a positive device described below. The contours of the cushion 9 and its thickness in the different portions of its surface can be chosen so as to obtain comfort at the same time as an artistic aspect. The fabric 11 can be any ordinary fabric.
The structure 1 comprises, on its lower face, a shallow cavity 17, which has a flat surface 19 which rests against a corresponding flat upper surface of a plate 21, mounted on the upper end of a column. 23. This column 23 is formed by a tube 25, which extends between the lower face 27 of the plate 21 and the upper end 29 of a hub 31 of a base 33.
Another device, which will be described later, pulls the lower face 27 of the plate 21, so as to apply it against the upper end of the tube 25, and pulls the upper surface of the hub 31, so as to 'engage with the lower end of the tube 25, in order to keep the plate and the hub properly spaced and rigidly connected to the tube 25.
The plate 21, shown in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, is provided with a plurality of bosses 35 extending upwardly from the upper surface of the plate. These bosses are arranged around the axis of the tubular column 23 and symmetrically with respect to the front-rear axis of the chair, that is to say with respect to the horizontal axis of FIG. 5.
As seen in fig. 4, the structure 1 comprises several cavities 37, which extend upwardly from the flat surface 19 of the shallow cavity 17, to receive the various bosses 35. The plate 21 is made of a material making it possible to produce a rigid structure.
This plate may for example be cast in aluminum or in an aluminum alloy, so as to have, without the need for any machining operation, flat surfaces on its upper face and also smooth lower and marginal surfaces, can be obtained. connecting tangentially with the smooth lower surface of the structure 1.
In this plate molded in aluminum or in aluminum alloy, the bosses can be formed with sharp edges and precise dimensions; since the structure 1 is preferably molded from a plastic material, the boss receiving cavities can also be formed to precise dimensions, so that the bosses 35 can frictionally fit into the cavities 37; thus, a tight connection is made between the structure 1 and the plate 21, so as to prevent these two elements from moving relative to each other, under the action of an inclination in any direction or twist around the axis of the chair column.
In order to firmly fix the bosses 35 in the cavities 37 and the upper face of the plate 21 against the surface 19 of the structure 1, screws 39 are used which are screwed into the bosses 35; washers are arranged under the heads of the screws 39, so that these washers apply to the upper surface of the seat portion 3 of the structure 1.
Plate 21 is held securely to the upper end of tube 25 by means of a short upper pin 41, the outside diameter of which is such that it fits snugly into the inside bore of tube 25. This short upper shaft 41 may be metallic and is machined so as to include an interior space in which a nut 43 is placed. The lower end of this short shaft 41 has a threaded hole, into which the threaded upper end is screwed. 'a rod 45, onto which the nut 43 is also screwed. The lower end of the rod 45 passes through an orifice in the hub 31 of the base 33 and carries a hexagonal head 47.
A washer 49 is placed under the head 47 in a cavity 51 formed in the lower end of the hub 31 of the base. By tightening the nut 43 on the rod 45, the hub 31 is pulled against the lower end of the tube 25 and the plate 21 is simultaneously pulled against the upper end of the tube 25.
To securely hold the upper short axis 41 on the plate 21, a flared portion 53 is formed by machining or otherwise on the upper end of this shaft, which is embedded in the metal of the plate 21, during the molding thereof. This flared part 53, thus firmly fixed, therefore withstands the traction of the rod 45. The short axis 41 is thus rigidly fixed to the plate 21 and it is fitted with gentle friction on the tubular column 25, so that 'A rigid connection is made at the upper end of the column for mounting the plate and the support of the seat thereon.
At the lower end of the tube 25, a lower short axis 55, which can also be metallic, is fitted to friction in the bore of this tube. This short axis 55 comprises in its part. lower several annular grooves 57, separated by annular and circumferential ribs 59.
The base 33 can be of a material such as aluminum or an aluminum alloy, and the lower end of the axle 55 can be placed in the mold, so that the metal of the hub 31 is molded on. these grooves and these ribs, with the aim of rigidly maintaining the axis 55 in the hub 31, with its upper part extending upwards inside the tube 25.
The short axis 55 has a longi tudinal orifice 61 which passes through it from one end to the other; thus, the rod 45 can extend through the axle 55 and through the part of the hub -31 adjacent to the washer 49, to act as a pull rod as explained above.
As seen in Figs. 4 and 7, the base 33 comprises four arms extending in radial directions. Two of these arms, the arms 65, extend forward of the transverse axis of the column and are disposed symmetrically with respect to the front rear axis of the chair. The other two arms 67 extend towards the rear of the transverse axis of the column and are also arranged symmetrically with respect to the front-rear axis of the chair.
The arms 65 and 67 make unequal angles with this front-rear axis. The arms 65 have such a radial length and extend at such an angle, with respect to the radial length and to the angle of the arms 67, that the front ends of the arms 65 lie at a greater distance in front of the arm. 'transverse axis of the column as the rear ends of the arms 67 behind this transverse axis. In this embodiment, the angle formed by the arms 65 is slightly greater than the angle formed by the arms 67.
It should be noted on the other hand, looking at fig. 7, that the axes of the arms 65, 67 do not extend radially from the axis of the column, but from points laterally offset, on either side of the front-rear axis of the chair.
The advantages of this arrangement will become apparent from the remainder of the description; however, we can now note that, if we make a cut not sant by the axis of the column and transverse to the front-rear axis of the chair, we see on this section a significant mass of material, so that the arms are rigidly connected together and to the hub 31, without having a large amount of connecting material at the front and at the rear of the column 23.
As can be seen in dotted lines in FIGS. 4 and 7, the arms 65, 67 of the base 33 have over most of their length an inverted U-shaped section, with wings extending downward from webs 71 arranged on the side upper arm of the different arms. These webs 71, as well as the wings, are molded integrally with the hub 31, so as to form a rigid central structure, which firmly holds the four arms. Reinforcing ribs 69 extend transversely of the arms 65, 67.
A stable base is thus produced, which rigidly supports the column 23, at the same time as the seat and its plate 21 both mounted on the column. Resilient pads 73 covered with a metallic coating 75 to obtain a smooth bottom surface are mounted in sockets formed in bosses located at the outer ends of the arms 65, 67. Rollers could be substituted for the pads.
As seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, a notch 85 is formed in the seat 3 of the structure 1 of the chair. This notch extends from the front edge 87 of this structure towards the rear as far as an interior end 89 located near the column 23. The plate 21 also has a notch 91, the contour of which substantially coincides with that of the inner part of the notch 85 of the structure 1. As seen in FIG. 5, the notch 91 of the plate 21 extends, at its inner end, substantially to the periphery of the hub 93 of the plate 21, from which extend several radial ribs 95, 97.
The alternating ribs 95 are arranged on the radial axes of the bosses 35 of the plate 21. The other ribs 97 are arranged on radial lines between the ribs 95. As seen in FIG. 6, these ribs 95, 97 extend from the upper surface 99 of the plate 21 to a web 101, the shape of which is conical and which extends outwardly from the end. lower hub 93.
The hub 93 constitutes a portion of the plate 21; in this portion, the flared upper end 53 of the upper short shaft 41 is embedded as explained above. By using a plate 21 of this shape, one obtains the rigidity necessary for the mounting of the column 23 and for the support of the structure 1, although the notch 91 requires a certain amount of material to be removed from the plate.
As seen in fig. 5, the width of the notch is large compared to the diameter of the plate. This is necessary so that the tubes 25 of the columns of the chairs, stacked above a particular plate 21, can penetrate into the notch 91 of the front edge of the plate. The tube 25 of the chair placed immediately above must move up to the inner end of this notch 91, that is to say up to the end on the right in FIG. 5.
The number of chairs that can be placed in a single stack depends on the relationship between the thickness of the seat and the length of the column between the seat and the base. It is recommended that the chairs be made so that six can be placed in a stack.
It should also be noted, considering fig. 2 and 5, that the notches 85, 91 narrow slightly in the direction from the front edge 87 of the structure to the rear end of the notches in coincidence, the radius of the inner end of the notch 85 being the same as that of the inner end of the notch 91. The inner casing 7, when it is made in a single piece covering the structure 1, also has a notch 105, which s 'extends from its front edge to an inner end adjacent to the inner end 89 of the notch 85 of the structure 1.
The notch 105 may also have a contour coinciding substantially with the circular end of the notch 85 of the structure 1. However, the width of the notch of the inner shell is preferably substantially greater over its entire length. , so as to take into account the thickness of the cover fabric, which is folded down over the edge of the cushion and the edge of the inner shell to secure it to the rebate 15 formed along the edges of the inner envelope. When the inner casing 7 is in one piece covering the entire upper surface of the structure 1, the rabbet can also be formed along the edge of the notch to receive the fabric.
Likewise, when the cushion and its cover fabric are in one piece across the width of the chair, the fabric-covered cushion has a cutout which extends from its front edge and whose width and length correspond to those of the notches 85, 105 of the structure 1 and of the inner casing, so. to allow the column of a stacking chair to enter this notch in the cushion.
However, to facilitate the formation of a central and deep indentation in the cushion and in its covering fabric, the inner envelope 7, as well as the cushion and its covering fabric, is preferably produced in two pieces; these two parts are given the desired shape so that they can be placed on each side of the vertical front-rear plane passing through the axis of the column 23 of the chair and that they are connected substantially in this plane.
When the inner casing 7 is thus manufactured in two parts, each of these comprises along its edges a rebate corresponding to the rebate 15, already described with reference to FIG. 4; this rebate of each part of the inner casing 7 forms the cavity in which the edges of the fabric are arranged, which is fixed to the rebate by seeds or other fasteners.
When the inner shell 7, as well as the cushion 9 and its covering fabric 11, are thus in two pieces, they must be formed with symmetrical contours and their parts, adjacent to the notch 85 of the structure 1, must be also symmetrical, so as to adapt to the contour of the notch 85. When the cushion is formed by an elastic material, such as foam rubber, which is generally the case, it is not necessary to deter accurately undermine the contour of the notch of the cushion, since the portions of the cushion, located on each side of the notch 85, give way when the column 23 of a superimposed chair is introduced into this notch.
There is shown in phantom in FIGS. 2 and 4 the outlines of a chair stacked and nested on the chair shown in solid lines. The parts corresponding to the seat and the back of the upper chair engage against the upper surface of the cushion 9 of the lower chair shown in solid lines.
The column 23 of the upper chair is shown in fig. 2 by a circle in phantom and it is also shown vertically in phantom in FIG. 4; this column 23 is arranged at the inner or rear end 89 of the notch 85 of the structure 1 and at the internal or rear end of the notch 91 of the plate 12, in front of the column 23 of the lower chair . It can be seen that the column 23 of the upper chair is immediately adjacent to that of the lower chair.
It can also be seen, from the outlines in phantom lines indicated in these two figures, that the column 23 of the lower chair, column shown in solid lines, is located very close to and behind the hub 31 of the base 33 of the upper chair, the rear arms 67 of the base 33 of the upper chair being astride the column 23 of the lower chair.
Due to the shape of the part of the base 33 which comprises the hub 31 and the adjacent portions arranged transversely with respect to the front-rear axis of the chair, as indicated above, the two columns can be brought up very close to each other without being significantly hampered by these parts of the bases 33 (fig. 7).
As regards the proximity of the inner end of the notches 85, 91 with respect to the hub 93 of the plate 21, it is also understood that the columns 23 of the two chairs can be brought very close to each other without be significantly hampered by the parts of the plate which are connected to the column.
We also see in fig. 2 that due to the proximity of the columns the front edge of the upper chair or its cushion is only slightly forward of the front edge of the lower chair or its cushion. The degree of this offset and the limit of the proximity of the two columns can be determined in some cases by the thickness and contour of the cushions, in particular the back cushion and the portion of the seat cushion which is adjacent to the seat cushion. folder;
however, the shape and the length of the notches 85, 91 and also the shape and the front-to-rear length of the space between the arms 65 of the base provide as close a proximity as possible to the two columns.
It can also be seen in FIG. 4 that the above-mentioned gap between the base of the upper chair and the base of the lower chair, this gap being achieved by giving the structure of the seat and the cushion a vertical dimension greater than that of the base , is sufficient, when the column of the upper chair is moved rearward in the notch of the lower chair, so that the rear arms 67 of the base of the upper chair are released from the base of the lower chair . Thus, the stacking operation is quick and easy.
In another embodiment the base may simply have a slot or notch extending from the rear periphery of a disc, such as that commonly used in a column type chair, this slot or notch s' extending to a front inner end adjacent to the hub to which the column is attached.
