The present invention relates to a method for continuously coating a web-like textile sheet-like structure with a coating liquid, the sheet-like structure being passed through a closed container as part of the wall thereof and being brought into contact with the coating liquid, and at the outlet of the container the excess coating liquid is wiped off by means of a scraper that forms part of the container.
Such a method has become known from GB-PS 1 110 222, for example. The scraper forming part of the container is fixed in place. This means that the coating thickness cannot be regulated, which depends on the supply of liquid to the container. So that this water supply leads to constant coating thickness, a relatively complicated system of level control in the loading container is provided, a vacuum is used to overcome the hydrostatic pressure acting on the free surface of the liquid in the container, which is applied when the liquid is too large or too small through the material web to correct the liquid level in the area of the scraper.
Apart from the fact that by means of this vacuum with a stationary wiper the liquid level, which is decisive for the layer thickness, can only be influenced with relatively great inertia, the layer thickness cannot be varied in practice. Although it is in itself z. B. from US-PS 2,944,484 known to use an ink application roller when printing material, which is moved past the solvent and a downstream wiper as part of the wall of a solvent container; the scraper is provided with manually operated mechanical adjustment means, and is intended to strip the loosened residual paint from the roller.
It is also known to use mechanically adjustable doctor blades for wiping off excess liquid directly from the material web.
The knife coating, which is probably the most economical method, is essentially limited to coating with liquids of high viscosity and requires great accuracy in terms of consistency and concentration. It is important that the shape and rigidity of the doctor blade and its contact with the material web are adapted to the prevailing conditions through precise adjustment. Such an attitude is usually difficult to maintain. It is particularly important that the scraper gets a uniform contact over the entire width of the material web in order to avoid uneven coating over the width of the material web.
The present invention aims to avoid all the disadvantages mentioned; For this purpose the method according to the invention is characterized in that a negative pressure is maintained in the container to generate the contact pressure of the scraper.
For a better understanding of the invention, its advantages and the results achieved with it, reference is made to the accompanying drawing and the description of the figures, on the basis of which preferred embodiments of coating apparatuses which can be used to carry out the process according to the invention and their mode of operation are explained and described.
In the drawing: FIG. 1 is a schematic illustration of a coating apparatus for carrying out a first example of the invention, FIG. 2 is a schematic illustration, similar to FIG. 1, of a coating apparatus for carrying out another example of the invention, FIG 3 shows a schematic representation, similar to that in FIGS. 1 and 2, of an apparatus for carrying out another embodiment of the invention, and FIG. 4 shows a further schematic representation.
similar to FIGS. 1 to 3, a coating apparatus for carrying out a further example of the invention.
The drawing shows four different embodiments of apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention, in which a textile web is introduced into a closed chamber, where it is coated with a liquid while it passes between two spaced doctor blades from which one is arranged in the entrance of the closed chamber and the other in the passage of the closed chamber. Similar parts in the four embodiments are provided with the same reference symbols.
In addition, four examples based on laboratory experiments using the apparatus shown in FIG. 1 are given.
In Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows, a textile web 1 goes over a roller 2 with a polished surface, and for part of its way over the roller, the textile web moves upward through a mass 42 of coating liquid. After the textile web has gone up to above the liquid level 12, excess liquid is stripped off on the textile web. To form the container for the coating liquid, a container 3 is provided in the vicinity of the circumferential periphery of the roller, and a pair of spaced-apart doctor blades or blades.
Mes ser 4-5 and 6-7 are fixed in the container 3 in such a way that the front edges 4, 6 of the squeegees or knives touch the textile web. The side surfaces or sides of the container 3 be seated fixed end parts which form an edge 3 'which point at a distance from the circumferential periphery of the roller 2 to this. The attachment points 5, 7 of the doctor blades or knives 4-6, 5-7 are located on the fixed edge 3 '.
In addition, the sides of the container have movable, lockable, flat sealing end parts 8, with respect to which the side edges of the doctor blades or knives can move freely. The sealing end portions have circular sections that extend between spaced punk th 9, 10 that touch the textile web 1, which goes over the roller, and the circular sections 9-10 are with the help of a rubber strip on the contact surface with the Sealed textile web.
As a result of this, the container 3, in combination with the surrounding periphery of the roller 2, forms a closed chamber into which the coating liquid is introduced. The container 3 forms an opening to the closed chamber which is bounded by the leading edges 4, 6 of the doctor blades 4-5, 6-7 and the edges 9-10 of the movable end or the side parts of the Behäl age.
This opening is closed by the surrounding periphery or jacket surface of the roller 2, which forms a support part for the textile web 1, which moves transversely to the opening between the doctor blades.
The coating liquid is pumped into the lower part 11 of the closed chamber up to a liquid level 12. The height of the liquid level is adjusted with a drainage channel 13 which is movable Lich at the connection 14. The connection 14 is shown by way of example, since the height of the drainage channel 13 can also be adjusted in other ways, as is known. When the coating liquid rises to the tip of the drainage channel 13, it flows downwards to the right side of the drainage channel, as shown in FIG. 1, where it forms a liquid level 17.
The liquid is stored in a storage container 15 and flows into the closed chamber between the drainage channel 13 and the roller 2 and returns to the storage container from the space in the container with the liquid level 17. The liquid level 16 in the container 15 is at ambient pressure. The pressure in the closed chamber with the liquid levels 12 and 17 is, however, regulated by suitable balancing between the vacuum line 18 and the pressure line 19.
In order to regulate the angle of the squeegee 6-7, which has a wiping or wiping effect, the squeegee fastening point 7 is fastened to a part 20 with the shape of an arc of a circle, which is movably supported on a base part 21 which is attached to the container 3 is attached and has a corresponding circular arcuate shape. Although not shown, the container 3 is mounted on a stand so that its position in contact with the textile web can be adjusted, i.e. that is, the container can be moved towards or away from the textile web.
The stand and the container provide a stable arrangement so that the vacuum applied in the closed chamber in the container does not affect its position.
When carrying out the coating process, the doctor blade 4-5 acts as a doctor blade, while the other doctor blade 6-7 acts as a doctor blade. The positions and the pressure acting on the squeegees can be roughly adjusted by moving the container 3 towards the textile web and the roller or away from them, where it slides between the sides share 8 with free ends. Otherwise the squeegees work differently and are regulated differently.
The spreading squeegee 4-5 smooths, levels and compresses the textile web. This squeegee should also balance the pressure of the liquid and the vacuum. However, no work is done with the liquid. As a result, the rotational force on the squeegee 4-5 developing at the attachment point 5 would be portable. In addition, the turning force can easily be adjusted uniformly across the width of the textile web, and as shown in Fig. 1, there is a channel 5 'which contains a tube 43 in which the pressure is regulated in order to achieve a uniform turning force or to give a uniform torque on the doctor blade.
The channel with the tube could also be arranged at point 5.
The doctor blade 6-7 smooths the coating while it wipes off excess liquid in a position at a distance above the liquid level 12 in the closed chamber. In performing its function on the coating liquid, the doctor blade can develop some resistance at high speeds of the textile web and when the liquid is highly viscous. The required high pressure at the leading edge 38 of the doctor blade is achieved in this case by setting the vacuum conditions in the closed chamber.
The rakcl must of course be sufficiently stiff so that the vacuum conditions of the closed chamber are converted into pressure at the leading edge 38 of the rakcl in such a way that the angle is suitable at this point. There is no torque provided at the attachment point 7 to act the contact of the squeegee 6-7 at its leading edge 38 to be. As a result, the doctor blade can be relatively thin and flexible and the considerable forces are only applied by the vacuum conditions inside the chamber and can be set with great accuracy and automatically distributed across the width of the textile web.
At the start of the coating process, the container 3 is roughly adapted to the textile web 1 and the roller 2. A vacuum pump 22 is present in the supply line 40, which extends between the storage container 13 and the lower part 11 of the closed chamber in order to feed the coating liquid into the container 3 bring, and the speed with which the liquid is supplied is adjusted with the aid of a valve 23 in line 40. As mentioned above, the liquid level 12 in the closed chamber is regulated by the position of the upper end of the overflow 13.
The spreading pressure on the leading edge 44 of the doctor blade 4-5 is adjusted with the aid of the hydraulic pressure in the tube 43 within the channel 5 '. At the leading edge 38 of the doctor blade 6-7, the pressure is regulated by the valve-provided vacuum line 18 and the similarly valved supply line 19, which the latter is adjusted to reduce the vacuum if necessary. The angle of the doctor blade to the textile web 1 at its leading edge 38 is precisely adjusted by moving its fastening point 7 attached to the movable part 20.
During the raw adjustment of the container 3, as described above, it is normally in such a position that the leading edge 38 of the doctor blade just reaches the textile web. Therefore, the position of the leading edge 38 remains unchanged even if the angle of the doctor blade to the textile web by moving the fastening point 7 is changed. If the apparatus shown is operated at a high vacuum and the doctor blade is so thin that it is bent, the raw setting can be adjusted by taking the shorter distance between the front edge 38 and the attachment point 7 into account. During normal stiffness, however, this adjustment is unnecessary.
If the coating is to be interrupted, the pump 22 and the vacuum pump 37 are switched off and the container 3 can be emptied of liquid. In addition, the container can optionally be pulled away from the surface of the roller. The procedure is the same if a tear occurs in the textile web after the coating has been applied. The same process can also be carried out if the textile web breaks before it reaches the coating apparatus, but in such a case the pumps should preferably be stopped automatically.
The container 3 is expediently cleaned with the aid of a permanently mounted spray steamer. Often times, required cleaning can be performed without pulling the container away from the roller; H. cleaning can be carried out almost without any interruption in operation.
In Fig. 2, the doctor blade and doctor blade positions have been reversed so that the textile web contacts the doctor blade 4-5 at about the liquid level 12 and moves downward in contact with the liquid until it reaches the doctor blade 6-7 at the point reached at which it emerges from the closed chamber with the container. The special arrangement is desirable if the coating liquid is sensitive to air.
The container can be arranged in various positions around the outer surface of the roller, and in Fig. 2 it is shown that the container extends downwards to below the lowest part of the roller. With this arrangement, the doctor blade 6-7 is kept completely below the liquid level 12. By means of a suitable position of the overflow 13, the liquid level 12 can also be held generally above the edge 4 of the doctor blade 4-5. Otherwise, everything works in the same way when starting, stopping and interrupting the apparatus as was described with reference to FIG.
3 shows yet another embodiment of the method according to the invention with some important differences in the arrangement of the supply of the coating liquid to the closed chamber and the contact of the doctor blade with the textile web.
The textile web 1, which is moving in the direction of the arrows, passes over a fixed support or a roller 2 in such a way that the part of the roller over which the textile web runs is in the area of an open side of the container 3. At the beginning of the coating, the textile web 1 runs between the roller 2 and the point of contact 44 of the doctor blades 4-5, and at the end of the coating the textile web runs between the front edge 38 of the doctor blade 7 and the sliding plate 2 '.
The end parts 8, which are movably arranged on the sides of the container, are sealed against the container with the doctor blade and doctor blade and are arranged in the same way as was described for FIG. Accordingly, the end pieces 8 touch the textile web or the surface of the roller 2 and the slide plate 2 '. The order of Enteile 8, the doctor blades 4-5, 6-7 and the roller 2 and the sliding plate 2 'provide a closed chamber through which the textile web 1 passes during the coating.
In the closed chamber there is a trough 11 in which the coating liquid is held with a liquid level 12. The coating liquid is supplied from a source or a storage container 15 with a liquid level 16 at atmospheric pressure, and the liquid returns to the storage container from the supply amount in the container 3 which has a liquid level 17. The closed chamber in the loading container 3 is maintained at vacuum conditions corresponding to the liq sigkeitsspiegel 16, 17 with the aid of the vacuum line 18 provided with a valve.
The partial vacuum in the closed chamber is set by the pressure line 19 provided with a valve. As shown in Fig. 1, the doctor blade 6-7 is attached to a support part 20 with the Formge environment of a circular arc, and the support part is fastened on a base part 21 with a corresponding shape be. The liquid is supplied from the storage container 15 with the aid of a pump 22 through a supply line in which the flow is regulated by the valve 23.
In contrast to the apparatus shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 for carrying out the method according to the invention, where the coating liquid flows into the lower part 11 of the closed chamber, in FIG. 3 the supply line from the storage container 15 is articulated th distribution line 24, which forms one side of the space in the closed chamber in which the coating liquid is kept in contact with the textile web going over the roller 2.
The line 24 has a pair of flanges 25 and 26, the flange 25 is directed downwards and the flange 26 is directed upwards, so that its edge was in the Ab outwardly from the line forms the upper edge of the upper course, which defines the liquid level 12 and above the liquid in the space with the liquid level 17 flows. Due to the articulated attachment of the Lei device 24, its lower flange 25 can be brought into a sealing relationship with a molded part 27 in the bottom of the container 3 such that the liquid mass is held in the lower part or space 11, where it fell up to the Liquid level 12 extends which is defined by the upper edge of the flange 26.
Holes or slots 45 are provided in the manifold which opens into the lower part 11 when the flange 25 is in the general vertical and sealing position. When the distribution line is diverted from the sealing position of the flange 25 with the part 27 of the container 3, the tub empties, and when the supply to the valve 23 is interrupted and the partial vacuum is reduced, the container 3 can be completely emptied. With the valve 28 in the discharge line from the container 3 to the reservoir 15 in the closed position and the valve 20 in the branch line from the discharge line in the open position, the interior of the container 3 can be washed.
This can be done by opening the valve 30 in another branch line which is connected to the supply line at a point downstream from the valve 23 in order to lead the cleaning liquid to the distributor line 24 which is manually or with the aid of a motor programmed movement can be rotated. During washing, the mixture can be circulated outside the container 3 by the pump 22 and a pressure-regulated valve 31 in a line that extends between the supply line and the discharge line.
After washing, the coating is started again by closing the cleaning fluid valves 30, 29, opening the coating fluid valves 28, 23 and moving or rotating the distributor line 24 into the position in which the flange 25 and part 27 of the container 3 are in contact tion forms.
If the front edge of the doctor blade were to extend in the direction of movement of the textile web 1, it would have to be pressed against the textile web with special devices, and it would be difficult to avoid the development of bubbles which are difficult to remove. What would be equally bad would be the possibility of thickened areas of the coating liquid that form along the leading edge of the doctor blade and can easily occur. Such spots would hang like curtains over the textile web and prevent the supply of the coating liquid, or they would fall off.
The disturbance caused by this can be reduced by inserting the doctor blade in such a way that its leading edge 16 points opposite to the direction of movement of the textile web, so that the thicknesses of the coating liquid are fed on the doctor blade, i. H. to the bottom of the trough, from where they can easily be removed appropriately if necessary. The partial vacuum developed in the closed chamber forces the squeegee against the textile web with a pressure that can be roughly determined by the distance between the contact point 44 of the squeegee and its attachment point 5 "on the container.
Admittedly, it is somewhat more difficult to get a steep drop between the contact point 44 and the attachment point 5 "and a small volume for the space 11 that contains the liquid with the oppositely directed squeegee. However, this disadvantage is small if the solid support 2 is formed by the combination of a rotating roller 2 with a small radius and a sliding plate 2 ', the latter with one edge close to the roller and with its other edge at a distance above the roller. As can be seen in FIG. the slide plate 2 ′ extends generally tangentially and upwardly from the roller 2.
To prevent the textile web 1 from being pressed into the container 3 at the point between the roller and the sliding plate, the joint can be shielded with the aid of a sealing arch 32, the one between the sealing arch, the roller and the sliding plate defined space is connected to a vacuum line 33 provided with a valve, so that suitable vacuum conditions can be maintained.
If the textile web has irregularities, it has proven to be advantageous to use a stationary sliding plate with a trough transversely to the textile web below the front edge 6 of the doctor blades 6-7. In the stretched state, the textile web is guided over the trough into which the irregularities are impressed, so that the other side of the textile web is flat when it passes between the front edge 6 and the sliding plate.
In contrast to the constructions shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the doctor blade 6-7 does not lie against the textile web where it is supported by the roller 2, but rather touches the textile web in a position that is outside of the Roll is spaced when the material web rolls over the slide plate 2 '. The separation of the solid support for the textile web into a rotating roller and a stationary slide plate, as shown in FIG. 3, is a further suitable modification of a coating apparatus which can be used for carrying out the method according to the invention.
The apparatus described in FIG. 4 for carrying out the method according to the invention is particularly useful when the coating liquid has a high viscosity. The apparatus differs from that of FIGS. 1 to 3 in that the coating liquid does not form a sump in contact with the textile web. The coating liquid is sprayed from a spray tube 24 as a film 47 against the textile web 1. The film 47 accompanies the textile web 1 up to the point 38 where the doctor blade 6 touches the textile web 1.
Excess liquid is wiped off here and flows back to the lower part 11 of the container 3. If the textile web tears, the spray tube 24 is preferably rotated such that the film 47 is sprayed directly back to the bottom part 11 of the container 3. By continuing the circulation of the viscous liquid during periods of textile web breakage, it is possible to avoid changes in the viscosity of the liquid. Stagnant liquid usually leads to a change in viscosity.
By keeping the coating liquid in a closed chamber, it is intended to reduce the pollution of the coating liquid from the environment and also to decrease the pollution of the environment by the coating liquid. Tests show that it is possible to obtain a reduction in the above-mentioned contamination when using the methods described. In addition, the expected improvement in terms of quality was surprisingly great.
Coating with completely different liquids for different purposes led to coatings of better quality, even with small amounts of topcoat, and to surfaces of better smoothness, even when large amounts of coating were applied and when fluids with high consistency and / or high pigment concentration were used. The options for regulating the amount of topcoat and keeping it constant have been greatly improved.
The coating process allows highly viscous liquids to be pressed very close to the desired point near the coating doctor. Due to the relatively large differences in the level in the container, the liquid can run down to the doctor blade without being disturbed by the pressure from the liquid pump.
This, together with the smoothing and compression effect of the squeegee on the textile web and the vacuum, ensures that the coating is brought into perfect contact with the surface of the textile web and, at the same time, the solvent in the liquid is prevented from entering the textile material in undesirable or undesirable ways in some cases even in a disruptive manner. Since the wiping effect can take place with a relatively small squeegee angle, good regulation and little interference from the environment, the overall result is so good that it can be described as synergistic.
By sharp lateral delimitation of the coating on the textile web, it is possible to coat the textile web in several strips that are well delimited from one another, the separate coating strips using ge separated containers or a container divided by partitions with separate doctor blades, which are located between the Extend partition walls, are applied.
The process can be used for a wide variety of coating liquids and for coating a wide variety of textile webs, e.g. B. fabric webs can be used. The apparatus and its use for the material web can also be modified, for example by placing the textile web against a non-curved surface or a soft surface by using different squeegee lengths, thicknesses and angles of contact or the liquid level in a slightly different way regulated by an overflow and by return of the liquid.
It is also possible, please include to regulate the contact of the doctor blade so that an overpressure is maintained in the container and at the same time the contact of the doctor blade is regulated by maintaining an even higher pressure on the outside. The textile web can also be coated on both sides by symmetrically placing two containers, one on each side of the textile web.
