Process for the preparation of cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6)
The invention relates to a process for the production of cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) by reducing cyclooctatetraene in an aqueous medium with zinc and alkali. In particular, the invention relates to an improved process for the reduction of cyclooctatetraene to cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) in which the formation of cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 5) and its bicyclic isomer can be largely avoided.
To prepare cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) of the formula I, it has been proposed to reduce cyclooctatetraene with excess zinc dust in the presence of large amounts of sodium hydroxide solution (cf. WO Jones, J. Chem. Soc., London 1954, pages 1808-1813) .
In order to achieve the most complete conversion possible, 4-8 equivalents of zinc and 4-8 equivalents of sodium hydroxide were used per molecule of cyclooctatetraene.
This procedure is not suitable for the production of the cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) on a larger scale. This is because large amounts of hydrogen and sodium zincate are formed, which impair the conduct of the reaction and make working up more difficult. Furthermore, it has been shown that the reaction product, in addition to the desired cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) of the formula I, contains larger amounts of the isomeric hydrocarbons II [= cyclooctatriene- (1, 3, 5)] and III [= bicyclo- [0, 2 , 4] -octadiene- (2, 4)] which, because of their close boiling points, are difficult to separate from the desired cyclooctatriene- (1, 3, 6) I and from the unchanged cyclooctatetraene.
EMI1.1
The rearrangement of I into II and III is favored in particular by the long reaction time and the strongly alkaline medium hitherto regarded as necessary. In order to shorten the reaction time, the zinc has already been activated with platinum.
However, not inconsiderable amounts of cyclooctadienes were formed.
It has now been found that the difficulties outlined can be avoided and good yields of cyclooctatriene- (1, 3, 6) can be obtained in a simple manner even in larger batches if a mixture of cyclooctatetraene, water and an excess of activated, if desired, is added , Zinc dust at elevated temperature gradually adds 0.01 to 1.0 equivalents of alkali per mole of cyclooctatetraene.
When carrying out the process, a mixture of cyclooctatetraene and water in a molar ratio of 1: 1 to 1:10 can be used.
The use of a water-soluble solvent for cyclooctatetraene and the cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) formed during the reduction is advantageous. The solvent can be, for. B. alcohols such as methanol, ethanol and isopropanol, or ethers, primarily cyclic ethers such as tetrahydrofuran or dioxane, use. The solvents can be added in amounts which bring about a homogenization of the reaction mixture. You can also add less solvent and work in the biphasic system. Theoretically, one gram atom of zinc is required to reduce a double bond in one mole of cyclooctatetraene. In general, 1 to 2 gram atoms of zinc are used, preferably a slight excess of zinc, e.g. B. 1.01 to 1.5 gram atoms per 1 mole of cyclooctatetraene.
Zinc is used in the form of zinc dust, which, due to the way it is manufactured, has a much larger surface area than fine zinc chips, for example. It is not necessary to use pure zinc dust, but if heavily contaminated zinc dust is used, the analytically determined content of metallic zinc must be used as the basis for calculating the addition in accordance with the proportions given above.
It has been found that the reduction of the cyclooctatetraene to cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) leads to avoidance of the formation of cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 5) if the smallest possible amounts of alkali metal are added. It is advantageous to use 0.05 to 0.2 moles of the alkali metal hydroxide per mole of cyclooctatetraene, e.g. B. sodium or potassium hydroxide.
The temperature range in which the reduction is advantageously carried out is between 20 and 100 ° C., preferably between 60 and 80 ° C.
To avoid the reduction of another double bond in the molecule of cyclooctatetraene, the reduction is interrupted as soon as all of the cyclooctatetraene has been used up. A longer reaction time promotes not only a possible formation of cyclooctadiene, but also the formation of cyclooctatriene-1, 3, 5), from which the stable bicyclic isomer according to formula III is formed by rearrangement.
The procedure is, for example, that to a mixture of 1 mole of cyclooctatetraene, about half the amount by weight of water and expediently at least the same amount by weight of a solvent such as alcohol, 1.05 to 1.2 gram atoms of zinc dust (calculated on 100% zinc content ), the mixture is warmed to 60-70 C and then gradually dripped in from 0.05 to 0.2 gram equivalents of sodium hydroxide solution, with constant stirring. The reduction of the cyclooctatetraene generally begins after a short time; it manifests itself in a temperature increase of 5-10 C and the development of small amounts of hydrogen.
It is useful to use 20-4011% sodium hydroxide solution; the reduction succeeds even when using dilute, z. B. 211 / piger, alkali, but there is a risk of delayed reaction and a too violent onset, difficult to regulate the course of the reaction. In any case, it is recommended to activate the zinc dust, e.g. B. by adding small amounts of copper, for example in the form of copper sulfate solution.
The reduction is generally complete in 2-3 hours at about 60 to 80.degree. It is then expedient to neutralize the reaction mixture in order to prevent subsequent isomerization of the resulting cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6), e.g. B. with sulfuric acid, the cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) and any added organic solvent is distilled off, advantageously with air-free steam, and if necessary dilutes the distillate with water to remove the cyclooctatriene, which is easily soluble in organic solvents but poorly in water. (1, 3, 6) as completely as possible.
One can also proceed in such a way that the alkaline reduction mixture, without neutralizing it by adding acid, is stirred directly into water and then allowed to settle. The cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) separates out as an upper layer.
If sufficient quantities of an organic solvent have also been used in the reduction, there is no risk that the zinc oxide sludge will include significant quantities of cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6).
The crude cyclooctatriene (1,3,6) obtained in this way in a yield of 95 to 991% is dried in the usual manner and purified by fractional distillation under reduced pressure. The pure product boils under a pressure of 58 mm Hg at 64 to 65 "C. It is a colorless liquid with a terpene-like odor; the refractive index is n2r = 1.5054 to 1.5056. The yield of pure cyclooctatriene- (1, 3, 6), based on the cyclooctatetraene used, is around 85 D / o of theory.
Isomeric cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 5) collects in the bottom of the distillation column. It suffers gradual polymerisation, but can also be obtained by distillation at reduced pressure as such or in a mixture with small amounts of bicyclo- [0, 2, 4] -octadiene- (2, 4).
The cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6), which is easily accessible in the manner according to the invention, can be used as an intermediate product for the production of plastics, medicinal products and pesticides.
The parts mentioned in the following examples are parts by weight.
example 1
624 parts of cyclooctatetraene, 950 parts of alcohol, 200 parts of water and 450 parts of zinc dust (91% zinc content) are admixed with a solution of 2 parts of crystallized copper sulfate in 10 parts of water and heated to about 65.degree. Then 50 parts of 40 "/ org. Sodium hydroxide solution are added dropwise to the mixture over the course of 2 to 21/2 hours with constant stirring. The temperature rises to 75 to 80 ° C. 10 to 20 minutes after the start of the dropping. The mixture is stirred at this temperature, until the specified amount of sodium hydroxide solution has been added after 2 to 21/2 hours, neutralized with 100 parts of 25% sulfuric acid and blown off the volatile products with steam.
About 2000 parts of distillate are collected and mixed with 6000 to 8000 parts of water. After settling, the upper layer consisting of 617 parts of crude cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) is separated off. The fractional distillation of the dried crude product gives 528 parts of cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6), corresponding to a yield of 83% of theory, based on the cyclooctatetraene used.
Example 2
624 parts of cyclooctatetraene, 1250 parts of alcohol, 200 parts of water and 500 parts of zinc dust (91 / o zinc content) are heated to 70 ° C. with stirring. 40 parts of 4011% sodium hydroxide solution are then added dropwise over the course of about 2 hours with constant stirring, and the temperature is maintained at 75 to 80 ° C. The mixture is stirred for a further 30 minutes, cooled to about 25 ° C. and the reaction mixture is poured to about 8000 parts of water. 625 parts of crude cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) separate out, corresponding to a yield of 98.5 / o of theory.
By rectification, 562 parts of pure cyclooctatriene (1, 3, 6) with a boiling point of 64 to 65 ° C. and nD = 1.5056 are obtained, corresponding to a yield of 88.4e / o of theory, based on the cyclooctatetraene used.
