Description

Method of manufacturing an endless steel wire mesh for a paper machine The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing an endless steel wire mesh for a paper machine such as machines of the Fourdrinier type. The invention aims to obtain a fabric which is more resistant to wear, deterioration and fatigue cracking than the metal fabrics used previously.

Heretofore, paper machine wire fabrics have been woven from wire of alloys such as. phosphor bronze and brass, which were adopted because of their low rate of strain hardening fatigue and because of their abrasion resistance.

These fabrics are, however, very exposed to accidental deterioration and deformation which renders them unusable or which considerably reduces their service life.

Stainless steel wire mesh is used for the manufacture of paper, but as, in the form of an endless belt, it: hardens quickly when subjected to repeated bending on a paper machine of the Fourdrinier type, its use is limited to filters where it is static with respect to the machine on which it is mounted.

The process according to the invention is characterized in that the fabric, after weaving, is subjected to a refrigeration treatment causing the transformation of the austenitic structure of the steel into a martensitic structure.

In order to complete the transformation of the steel in the wire mesh, it is usually carried out at a temperature of -78oC or lower, passing the wire mesh through a cooling chamber or a bath of medium to low. temperature, such as alcohol or acetone in which solid carbon dioxide is present.

This treatment transforms the nitic austic steel alloy into a hard-tempered martensitic alloy not susceptible to rapid strain hardening in a paper machine.

The resulting wire cloths can operate on a paper machine with repeated flexing without cracking by fatigue, and are furthermore very resistant to accidental deformations to which bronze or bronze and brass paper machine cloths are highly exposed.
