Rotary Offset Printing Machine Rotary offset printing machines usually include a cylinder for transferring ink from a printing cylinder to the material to be printed.
The active surface of such a transfer cylinder is usually rubber or the like which has a slight degree of elasticity contributing in part to the good impression of the image. During the operation of such a machine, the surface of the transfer cylinder, also referred to as a blanket, becomes contaminated with a half-hardened ink residue and, when the material to be printed is paper, as is usually the case , the residue additionally contains fibers or paper flakes.
This residue, which gradually forms during printing, further deteriorates the quality of the printed product. Attempts have been made to prevent the formation of this residue by applying a washing liquid to it. Despite this, we have to stop the machine from time to time to allow the blanket to be washed thoroughly. How often the machine stops depends a lot on the nature of the paper to be printed during a given run.
Blankets need to be replaced after a certain period of use not only because of the wear and tear of their surface, but also because the material loses its elasticity, and residue formation may well be a contributing factor to this. state of affairs.
It is clear, therefore, that fouling of this blanket is a primary cause preventing an offset machine from delivering high throughputs due to the need to stop it from time to time.
The main object of the invention is to allow efficient cleaning of the transfer cylinder during operation of the machine. It relates to a rotary offset printing machine provided with a scraper device comprising a series of elongate elements capable of being resiliently pressed at points spaced along a transfer cylinder, characterized in that said elongated elements are flexible,
and are held at their ends in such a way that when they are pressed against the surface of the cylinder they envelop part of the periphery of at least one section of that cylinder to produce the scraping action.
Experiments have shown that such a machine provided with a scraper device not only is not expensive and easy to maintain in operation, but can run continuously as long as the material of the transfer cylinder lasts while obtaining clean prints made at high operating speeds.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of a scraper device of the machine forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of an offset printing unit having applied a scraper to it.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the scraper seen in the direction of the arrow II in FIG. 1.
A transfer cylinder or blanket is shown at 1, a printing cylinder at 2 and a printing cylinder at 3. The cylinders rotate in the directions shown, so that the blanket on cylinder 1 takes an impression from the cylinder. printing cylinder 2 and later conveys this printing as it rotates on a sheet 4 passing around the printing cylinder.
The scraper device is shown in S and comprises an open support 6 carried by arms 7 from an oscillating shaft 8. Metal wires 9 are arranged through the opening of this support 6 obliquely with respect to the length of said support. Thus, by angularly moving the oscillating shaft 8, the support can be moved from an inactive -position shown in phantom (in which the threads are spaced from the surface of the blanket) to an active position shown in solid lines.
In this active position, the threads (which are either soft or stretched in an inactive position of the carrier) envelop themselves around the curved periphery of the blanket and only because of their obliqueness produce a distributed scraping action required on the surface of the blanket. blanket as it moves under the threads.
The support 6 may be formed of a metal having a sufficient degree of elasticity to impose elastic traction on the threads when the support 6 is in its active position so that these threads accommodate themselves closely to the thread. shape of the blanket surface.
As shown in the drawing, it is preferred to arrange the support 6 such that the blanket passes under the scraper threads as it passes from the transfer zone in cooperation with the printing cylinder 3 to the image reception zone. in cooperation with the printing cylinder 2.
The interior of the carrier 6 is connected to a suction source so that the material removed by the threads is sucked through the spaces between the threads and is removed from the carrier. In order to locate the suction action at the active zone of the son of the scraper, plates 10 forming screens are mounted on the support.
The support 6 is arranged so as to be moved between active and inactive positions by an arm 11 which is connected to a lever 12 on the shaft 8 by means of a spacer spring 13. This arm 11 can be arranged to be actuated by the machine or it can be connected to the cylinder drive through a reduction gear so that the support is moved into the active position after the blanket cylinder. made a <RTI

When the length of the assembly of metal wires is only a part of the length of the blanket, means are provided for reciprocating the support 14 carrying the shaft 8.
