Device operated with compressed air for driving nails or the like. The invention relates to a device operated with compressed air for driving nails or the like, in which a piston slidably mounted in a cylinder is placed on the nail or held ready in a guide member connected to the cylinder acts like that.
The invention is based on the knowledge that various factors such as the recoil, the air supply and the weight of the device are all the more favorable, the slimmer the cylinder with the same volume, i.e. the smaller the diameter and the greater the stroke of the cylinder will. The slimmer the cylinder becomes, the less favorable are the permissible dimensions of a helical spring for returning the piston, and at a certain limit the use of such a helical return spring is impossible because of the length of the spring caused by the large stroke .
Devices for driving in nails or the like operated with compressed air are already known, which work with working pistons acted on on both sides. In this case, compressed air is applied to the piston both on the working stroke and on the return stroke. However, this double-sided application of the piston requires a special control device for reversing the compressed air flow.
In addition, the requirement of the device for compressed air compared to the known devices with only one-sided acted upon piston is significantly increased, since compressed air is now also required for the return of the piston.
The use of a piston that is acted upon on both sides means * both an increase in manufacturing costs and weight caused by the special control device for reversing the compressed air flow and an increase in operating costs caused by the increased consumption of compressed air.
In another known, be powered with compressed air device for driving nails or the like, a vacuum cylinder is arranged for the return stroke of the working piston in front of the working cylinder. The piston rod carrying the working piston protrudes through a partition into the vacuum cylinder and is provided there with a second piston.
During the working stroke of the piston rod, the piston located in the vacuum cylinder is moved at the same time, which creates a vacuum in the vacuum cylinder in front of the partition, so that the return stroke is effected by the atmospheric pressure. The extension of the working cylinder necessary in the known device through the vacuum cylinder used for the piston return, however, requires a considerable increase in the total length of the nailing device, making it difficult and un manageable.
Another disadvantage of this known device is that two pistons ground into two cylinders are required, which makes the manufacture of the device considerably more expensive. In addition, the known device can only function properly if both the working piston and the piston rod are well sealed in the partition between the vacuum cylinder and the working cylinder.
If this is not the case, then there is a possibility that compressed air will enter the vacuum chamber and thus prevent the device from functioning properly.
The invention is based on the object of creating a device operated with compressed air for driving in nails or the like, in which the piston is returned without the use of a spring, so that the described disadvantages of the device provided with a vacuum cylinder and the one with Devices operating on both sides with piston pressurized with compressed air do not occur.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the cylinder on the side of the piston not exposed to compressed air is connected to an air storage space before the end of its working stroke, in which air displaced from the cylinder by the piston during the working stroke is stored under compression that causes the return stroke of the piston.
The invention is explained in the following description using two exemplary embodiments shown in the drawing, namely FIG. 1 shows a section through the first embodiment of the device, FIG. 2 shows, on a larger scale, a section through the compressed air valve of the cylinder, and FIG. 3 shows a section through the second embodiment of the device.
The device consists of a slender cylinder 1, which is connected to a guide member 3 provided with a bore 2 for the nails 4 or the like to be hammered in, which is attached to the cylinder 1 and the guide member 3 by a feeder in the form of a hopper 5 are fed.
A piston 6 is slidably mounted in the cylinder 1 and is provided with a rod-like plunger 7. This enters the bore 2 of the guide member 3 during the working stroke of the piston 6 and strikes the nail 4 held there in the workpiece B. In the front part of the cylinder 1 there is a buffer spring 9 which intercepts the piston 6 at the end of the working stroke .
At the rear end of the cylinder 1, a compressed air valve 10 is provided, the plunger 11 of which can be actuated by a pawl 13 pivotable about the hinge pin 12 against the action of the valve spring 14. Per cylinder 1 is also provided at the valve end with an air outlet 15 which is opened by the pawl 13 when the valve is closed and vice versa.
In the example shown, the pawl 13 is actuated by a rod 16 articulated to it, which leads to a hand lever 18 pivoted about the transverse axis 17 on the cylinder 1, which is held by the valve spring 14 in a position corresponding to the closed position of the valve 10 becomes.
The compressed air is supplied to the valve 10 through a pipe 19 running parallel to the cylinder 1 in the example shown and having a connection for an air hose 20.
The front part of the cylinder 1 is concentrically surrounded by an air storage space 21 which communicates with the cylinder through openings 22 in the cylinder wall.
The mode of operation of this embodiment of the device according to FIGS. 1 and 2 is such that the Kol ben 6 executes the working stroke when pressurized by compressed air, in the course of which the plunger 7 enters the bore 2 of the guide member 3 and the nail or the like 4 into the Workpiece 8 strikes. As long as the plunger 7 has not yet entered the bore 2, the air displaced from the cylinder 1 by the Kol ben 6 can escape through the bore 2 of the guide member 3.
But as soon as the plunger 7 has entered the bore 2, the cylinder 1 is closed on the side of the piston 6 not acted upon by compressed air from the atmosphere, and the air displaced by the piston 6 from the cylinder 1 now passes through the Openings 22 in the air storage space 21, where it is compressed. The pressure of the compressed air in the storage space 21 is sufficient to return the piston to its original position after the end of the working stroke, where it is held in place by a locking device.
This can consist, for example, of a locking pin 23 which is transversely displaceable and sealed in the cylinder head in a manner known per se and which enters an annular groove 24 of a projection of the piston 6 under spring action. At the beginning of the next working stroke, the spring action of the locking device is overcome by the compressed air.
The embodiment according to FIG. 3 differs from the first embodiment in that an axially movable in the bore 2 of the guide member 3, under the action of a return spring 25, is provided with a head 27 'and acts on the piston during the working stroke - Striking plunger 27 permanently closes the cylinder 1 against the bore 2 of the guide member 3.
In this case, the cylinder 1 on the side of the piston not acted upon by compressed air is permanently closed off from the atmosphere by the plunger 27 guided in a seal 26, so that the entire stroke of the piston out of the cylinder 1 through the openings 22 displaced air volume is stored in the air storage space 21.
Instead of the buffer spring 9 of the embodiment according to FIG. 1, in the embodiment according to FIG. 3 the piston is designed as a spring piston in such a way that two piston parts 28, 29 are firmly connected to the piston part 28 and in the other piston part 29 axially displaceable piston rod 30 are mutually movably connected, between the piston parts a spring 31 pushing them apart up to a stop of the piston rod 30 is arranged.
In this embodiment, too, the locking device 23, 24 for the piston 28, 29 is provided at the rear end of the cylinder 1. The compressed air valve 10 ', designed in principle in the same way as the valve 10 of the embodiment according to FIGS. 1 and 2, is arranged here in the immediate vicinity of the hand lever 18 and connected to the rear end of the cylinder 1 by a pipe 19'. The hose 20 'is connected directly to the valve 10'.
