Il a maintenant été trouvé que d'une manière générale les, sels dialcalins de colorants di-ortho- hydroxy-azoïques monosulfonés, dont les deux colo rants cités ci-dessus ne représentent que des cas par ticuliers, présentent un intérêt supérieur à celui de la plupart des colorants existant actuellement sur le marché en raison de leur excellente solubilité ;
Il est cependant bien connu que les colorants di- ortho-hydroxy-azoïques sont relativement instables en milieu alcalin et supportent relativement mal le séchage indispensable pour l'obtention de produits finis ;
Process for the preparation of dialkali salts of monosulfonated diortho-hydrogy-azo dyes The product resulting from the coupling of the diazo compound of amino-1-naphthol-2-sulfonic acid-4 with 0-naphthol has been known for many years and can be regarded as one of the most important among the chromium dyes currently used for the production of black shades.
The difficulties initially encountered with the acid diazotization. amino-1-naphthol-2-sulfonic-4 had led those who were the first to prepare this dye to use particular methods of diazotization or of preparation of the dye itself.
German patents 156440, 157325 and 160536 used as diazotizable base the amino-l-naphthalene-disulfonic acid-2,4 of which the.
diazo compound is converted by simple treatment, due to the lability of the sulfonic group at 2, to the diazo derivative of 1-amino-naphthol-2-sulfonic acid-4. In German patent 181714, amino-1-naphthol-2-sulfonic acid-4 is acetylated,
dinitrogenates 1-amino-1-acetoxy-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid-4 and saponifies the dye obtained after coupling with α-naphthol. In both cases, they were processes. relatively complicated for the preparation of a simple colourant.
German patents 171024 and 175 593 have demonstrated the possibility of preparing the diazo-oxide of amino-1-naphthol-2-sulfonic acid-4 by operating respectively in the presence of copper or zinc salts and, finally, the German patent 188645 described the preparation of the zinc salt of the dye. It is in this form that until today the dye has always been prepared by the various companies producing dyestuffs, apart from certain products placed on the market in the form of monosodium salt which is too poorly soluble to be really interesting for users.
The progress made in the field of dyeing and the development of Vigoureux printing have gradually led users to work with dyes as little cut as possible and whose solubility should be maximum; which has led to frequent changes in the conditions for preparing the dye.
It is also known that the dye resulting from the coupling of the diazo compound of anino-1-naphthol-2-sulfoniquo-4 with (3-naphthol, as moreover that obtained with a-naphthol , is used in admixture with other metallizable azo dyes, or not. In many cases, due to the very fact that the basic dye is a zinc salt, the mixtures obtained have a poor solubility which necessarily limits uses.
It has now been found that, in general, the dialali metal salts of monosulfonated di-ortho-hydroxy-azo dyes, of which the two dyes mentioned above represent only particular cases, are of greater interest than that of most of the dyes currently on the market because of their excellent solubility;
this allows both use for dyeing in apparatus, including pressure dyeing, as well as use for vigorous printing or for the preparation of dye mixtures.
The present patent relates to a process for the preparation of dialali metal salts of monosulfonated di-ortho-hydroxy-azo dyes. This process is characterized in.
which is subjected to very rapid drying a mass obtained by treatment with alkalis, caustics of monosulfonated di-ortho-hydroxy-az6iques dyes, in the form of free acids or monoalkali salts. Given the desirable high concentration,
there could be no question of obtaining these dialkali salts by cutting with the aid of suitable alkaline elements which do not generate foam or by salting concentrated solutions of the dialkali salts; consequently, only a treatment with caustic alkalis of the colorant either in the state of liquid acid or in the state of a mono-alkali salt, was liable to lead to the di-alkali salt.
It is however well known that the di-ortho-hydroxy-azo dyes are relatively unstable in an alkaline medium and relatively poorly withstand the drying essential for obtaining finished products;
Now, it has now been found that, on condition that the drying is carried out very quickly, it is possible to achieve products of a very high degree of purity without appreciable decomposition, and this on an industrial scale. Among the many drying means which can be used, mention may be made of continuous drying, on belts, drying on a drum, and spray drying.
The example below illustrates the invention ; the parts indicated are parts by weight.
Example The dye to be treated with the caustic alkali was prepared as follows 144 parts of (3-naphthol are dissolved in 275 parts of water at 450 ° C. using 40 parts of caustic soda at 100 () / o; is then introduced in a few minutes, while maintaining the temperature at 450 C, a neutral paste prepared with 272 parts of the monosodium salt of the diazdic compound of amino-1-naphthol-2-sulfoniqüe-4 and 450 parts of water The dye is formed rapidly and coupling is complete in substantially two hours.
After dilution and neutralization until a slightly alkaline reaction, the dye obtained is isolated by filtration.
The paste obtained is added little by little to 100 parts of cold water at the same time as a solution of 40 parts of caustic soda in 100 parts of water, so that any addition of colorant corresponds to an addition of the quantity chemically equivalent of caustic soda. As soon as it is homogeneous, the very fluid paste thus obtained is dried without special precautions in an atomizer.
The product obtained is in the form of a dark blue powder, giving with water a pure blue solution ; it corresponds to the disodium salt of the dye resulting from the coupling of the diazdic compound of the amino-1-naphthol-2-sulfonic acid-4 with (3-naphthol.
