Internal combustion engine The exhaust pipe system of an internal combustion engine can generally be divided into three parts, the first part of which belongs to the cylinder housing and extends from the cylinder space to the outlet opening of the cylinder housing.
The second part consists of a connecting line that extends from the opening mentioned to the third part, which is referred to below as the exhaust gas discharge pipe and, in the case of a multi-cylinder machine, can be designed as an exhaust gas collecting pipe common to all cylinders or at least one group of cylinders, or as a muffler or muffler.
In the first part of the line system, the exhaust gases coming from the exhaust valve or from slots in the cylinder jacket controlled by the piston flow with strong vortices. This creates an increased flow resistance for the rinsing process of the cylinder. It is therefore desirable to keep the eddies as small as possible by appropriately designing the exhaust paths mentioned between the cylinder and the exhaust gas discharge pipe.
It must therefore be ensured that the turbulence, the formation of which cannot be prevented in the first part of the exhaust gas path, is limited to the shortest possible initial section of the overall path and the remaining kinetic energy of the exhaust gases is then used as much as possible to complete the scavenging process improve:
The present invention achieves this in that the connecting line forming the middle part between the exhaust outlet part of each cylinder and the exhaust gas discharge pipe is designed in such a way that all changes in direction of the exhaust gases in this line are restricted on the initial part of the line, and that the Connecting line after the initial part has a constriction and in the adjoining part, which extends to the end of the connecting line, has a continuously increasing flow cross-section and an at least approximately straight longitudinal axis.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the subject matter of the invention in a side view, partially in a vertical central longitudinal section through a cylinder.
The two-stroke internal combustion engine shown can, apart from the structural features explained below, be of any design, in particular have any number of cylinders. In the cylinder 1 shown, the piston 2 runs in the usual way. This controls the scavenging air inlet slots 3 in the cylinder wall.
The exhaust gases leave the cylinder through a corresponding opening in the cylinder head, which is closed by a valve 4, the shaft of which in a valve seat forming a set exhaust gas outlet part 6 in the cylinder head is vertically displaceable and leads through an above part 6 to arranged Control organ is opened and closed in the usual way.
Part 6 is provided with a curved channel 5 forming the first part of the total exhaust gas path, in which the exhaust gases are deflected by about 90 from the vertical to the horizontal direction, although it should be noted that the exhaust gases are in the channel 5 are in an extraordinarily turbulent state, which is caused by the discontinuous transition from the cylinder to the channel 5 and by the resistance of the valve disk and shaft as well as the guide construction of the shaft.
The outlet opening of part 6 is followed by a connecting line which is formed by the two parts 7, 8 which correspond to the middle exhaust gas path part. Part 7 consists of a curved connecting piece, whereas part 8 has the shape of a diffuser nozzle. The latter opens into a manifold 9 with a much larger passage cross-section, which is common to a number of cylinders of the machine and is arranged and fastened to run alongside the machine frame along the cylinder.
An exhaust gas turbine 11 is connected to the collecting pipe 9 by means of a pipe socket 10 and drives a compressor, not shown, which is arranged coaxially to the turbine and is driven directly by means of the turbine shaft. The compressor supplies at least part of the scavenging air, which is fed to a distribution space 13 by means of a pipe 12. This extends over the entire length of the engine and is connected to a space 15 surrounding the cylinders through openings 14 which are controlled by automatic valves.
From this, the scavenging air inlet channels 3 controlled by the piston 2 lead into the individual cylinders.
The total path through which the exhaust gases flow from the cylinder 1 provided to the exhaust manifold 9 is illustrated by the schematic fluid axis 16-17 shown in the drawing with dash-dotted lines. As already mentioned, the flow in the first part of the path given by the channel 5 is very turbulent. It is therefore a matter of achieving the most invertebrate flow possible in the subsequent further parts of the route, which are not hindered by special components such as the valve stem and the valve guide. It can be assumed here that the position of the collecting pipe 9 is more or less determined by the space available within the machine.
As a result, by and large, the change in direction is given, which must then take place at the outlet opening of the channel 5 up to the entry into the collector 9. It is now important to carry out this change in direction of the exhaust gases, which is more or less given by the space available, in the middle part of the path of the exhaust gas flow, i.e. in the curved part 7 of the connecting line between the exhaust gas outlet part 6 and the exhaust gas collector pipe 9, limited to the Initial part of the Krüm mer 7 on an arc, which is denoted by 18 in the drawing.
After the exhaust gases have been deflected on this bend 18, the gases should flow in a straight line to the collecting pipe 9 in order to avoid any white direct influence on the flow, which could lead to further turbulence. In order to bring about a favorable direction of the gas flow and to contain the turbulence of the exhaust gases, the connecting line behind the manifold 7 is provided with a constriction 19.
In the part 8 which adjoins here and extends to the end of the connecting line, the connecting line has a continuously increasing flow cross-section with an at least approximately straight longitudinal axis. Through the constriction 19, the flow speed of the exhaust gases is temporarily increased, whereby a certain straightening of the gases is effected, which affects at least in the boundary layer along the wall of the line part 18 in the region of the 19 constriction.
This constriction 19 practically does not bring about any significant increase in the flow resistance of the exhaust gases in the line part 8, because due to the aforementioned directing effect of the constriction on the gas flow, the gas in and of itself requires a smaller flow cross-section than with the previous disordered flow of the gases would have been the case under the same conditions if there had been no constriction.
The prerequisite is, of course, that the constriction 19 is only a relatively small construction which, as a result of the general improvement in the flow characteristics of the gases brought about by it, practically does not cause any disadvantage with regard to the flow resistance.
In general, of course, when conveying the exhaust gases from the cylinder 1 into the manifold 9 on the total path given by the flow center line 16-17, a certain minimum pressure drop in the whole connecting line cannot be avoided with the predetermined gas quantities flowing through the unit in the time. Since the length of the time interval for the scavenging period of the cylinder and the passage cross section of the channel 5 is more or less given by the type of construction of the engine, the exhaust gases have a relatively high speed, measured in the Ausittsöff voltage from the channel 5, during the entire discharge process.
Only outside of the part 6 are there opportunities to design the connecting line to the collector 9 in such a way that a decrease in the flow velocity and therefore the flow loss at the mouth in the collector 9 is brought about. As a result of the arrangement of the line part 8, which is shaped like a diffuser, part of the kinetic energy of the outlet gases can now be recovered during the time interval in which the exhaust gases flow through this line part.
The line part with the continuously increasing average cross-section is expediently designed as a hollow cone jacket with a cone angle of 6 to 10 and dimensioned so long that its flow cross-section at the point where it flows into the collecting pipe 9 is more than 100% larger than the flow cross-section of the connecting line immediately before the constriction 19.
The connecting line also expediently opens into the collecting pipe 9 as tangentially as possible, whereby it is essential that its opening diameter is considerably smaller than the inner diameter of the collecting pipe 9. A cyclone flow then forms at the opening point in the collecting pipe, which allows the outlet conveys the exhaust gases from the collecting pipe 9 into the pipe socket 10, since the gases are pressed into the pipe socket 10 under the influence of centrifugal force.
In order to reinforce the directing effect of the constriction 19 on the exhaust gas flow in the connecting line, the part 20 located immediately in front of the constriction 19, which is located in the intermediate piece 7, is designed in a straight line, its longitudinal axis coinciding with that of the subsequent remaining Lei device part.
The pressure drop in said connection line between the cylinder 1 and the collecting pipe 9 is a measure of the energy loss during the flushing process. Therefore, by reducing this pressure drop by virtue of the diffuser effect of the line part 8, an improvement in the degree of flushing effect can be achieved. It should be noted that on the one hand a smaller compressor power is sufficient to compensate for the total pressure drop and on the other hand the higher exhaust gas pressure in the manifold 9 achieved by reducing the pressure drop causes a corresponding increase in the exhaust gas turbine power.
This results in a correspondingly increased compressed air delivery rate of the turbine, which leads to an improvement in the cylinder charging.
What has been said above for the described two-stroke internal combustion engine, of course, also applies analogously to a four-stroke engine. The number of exhaust valves is also not important; rather, each cylinder can also have several exhaust valves. On the other hand, the internal combustion engine can also have exhaust ducts in the cylinder jacket that are controlled by the piston instead of exhaust valves.
The number of cylinders is also irrelevant, since the stated ratios relate to the connecting line between the cylinder and the manifold and therefore also apply to a single-cylinder engine, the exhaust manifold then being a simple exhaust gas discharge pipe.
However, as discussed above, there are particular advantages in internal combustion engines in which an exhaust gas turbine is connected to the exhaust gas discharge pipe and drives a compressor to compress at least part of the air required for cylinder scavenging. However, the reduction of the pressure drop in the exhaust gas outlet line during the scavenging period is also of considerable importance in conventional internal combustion engines.
