Isolation valve for molecular vacuum chamber The final vacuum obtained in vacuum systems of conventional design is limited to a certain value which depends on the degassing of the various elements. used in the production of the system, such as seals for example.
The production of enclosures, in which a molecular vacuum is created and in which this vacuum, started by a conventional pump, is completed by a pump of the evaporation and ionization type, leads to the elimination of any element liable to significant degassing; this is the case, in particular, in the construction of valves responsible for completely isolating the interior of these enclosures from atmospheric air or from any other fluid or gas harmful to the operation of the devices contained in these enclosures.
Until now, the leaktightness of valves against molecular vacuum has been achieved by applying two metal surfaces against each other; but this process does not offer an absolute guarantee of sealing, especially when the devices which use it have to be handled very many times.
The present invention relates to an isolation valve for a molecular vacuum chamber, the shutter of which comes into contact with the seat of the valve by two separate surfaces between which, when the shutter is closed, a chamber is formed. to be maintained at a pressure between those of said enclosure and of the atmosphere.
This valve is characterized in that the sealing surface, which is close to the enclosure, is provided directly on a valve made of malleable metal, while the other surface consists of an O-ring made of plastic.
The advantages of this valve are the ease of operation, obtaining a strong thrust of the metal shutter on its seat, the rejection outside the device of any trace of gas due to leaks or degassing of the obturator system and liable to deteriorate the high vacuum maintained in the enclosure.
An embodiment of the valve which is the subject of the invention will be described below, without limitation, with reference to the drawing in which FIG. 1 shows in sectional elevation a valve with a metallic shutter sealed against molecular vacuum, in the closed position; fig. 2 partially shows the valve of FIG. 1 in the open position, and FIG. 3 shows in plan a detail of FIG. 1.
The valve consists of a 1 in body. which are pierced the two tracks 2 and 3 on either side of the seat 4, the opening 5 of the body 1 being closed by a cap 6 which allows the control rod 7 of the shutter 8 to pass.
Channel 2 puts the valve in communication with the enclosure to be evacuated, channel 3 puts the valve in communication with the pumping system; the enclosure and the pumping system are not shown in the figures.
The shutter 8 is a malleable metal body of revolution which is applied directly by its bearing 9, facing upwards when empty, on the base of the seat 4 (metal-to-metal contact); a groove 10 hollowed out in this shutter 8, on the side facing the track 3, contains an O-ring 11 made of a material with a high elasticity coefficient such as synthetic rubber, which seal is applied to the part of the seat turned also to channel 3.
An annular groove 12, hollowed out in the shutter 8 between the two lines of contact, metal to metal on the one hand, and elastic seal to metal on the other hand, forms with the wall of the seat 4 a chamber which is placed under vacuum after closing the valve with a vacuum port 13.
The control rod 7 is terminated on the side where it is fixed to the shutter 8 by a square 14 followed by a thread 15, the latter penetrating into the shutter 8. The square 14 enters a ring 16 per cée a square hole 17; this ring 16 is held on the shutter 8 by one or more screws 18. This mounting of the rod 7 on the shutter 8 prevents the latter from unscrewing from the shutter.
The other end of the control rod 7 is provided with an attached handle 19, a screw thread 20 and a ring 21 provided with a flat 22 abutting on a corresponding bump 31 traced on the press. seal 23. The thread 20 and the ring 21 are cut in the rod 7 which is in one piece.
The seal press 23 is fixed to the cap 6 of the valve body by screws 24 which, when they are tightened, crush the two O-rings 25 separated by the ring 26.
This seal press, of a common type, allows the lengthwise and rotational movements of the control rod.
The thread 20 carries, in the position of fig: 1, a nut composed of two parts 27 and 28 made integral with one another by screws not shown in the figure, and arranged so that the part 28 is supported at 29 on the seal press when closing the valve. The nut is controlled by the handles 30, screwed into the part 28.
During the evacuation of the enclosure, not shown, using a pump, also not shown, connected to track 3, the control rod 7, once released from the screw thread 20, is released. lifted by the handle 19, and the shutter 8 is fixed to the cap 6 by a lug system 32 - buttonhole 33 of a conventional type (FIG. 2). In this way, the shutter 8, despite the thrust which it undergoes due to the atmospheric pressure, does not come to be applied on the seat 4.
The enclosure is closed by unhooking the shutter 8 from the cover 6 by rotating the handle 19 which releases the lug 32 from the buttonhole 33 and by pushing it by means of this same handle on the seat 4. The shutter 8 always takes the same angular position on the seat 4, this being determined once and for all by the flat 22 which is made to fit into the corresponding bump of the press-joint 23 when, after having engaged the step of screws 20 in the nut 27-28, it has been turned sufficiently using the handles 20, while immobilizing the rod 7 using the handle 19, so that the flat 22 reaches at the level of the bump 31.
This process allows each point of the metal-to-metal contact line of the shutter 8 with the seat 4 to undergo the same deformation, elastic or not, with respect to the defects of the seat and thus to retain its properties overall. sealing. By continuing to turn the nut 27-28 using the handles 20, but releasing the handle 19, the shutter 8 is strongly applied to the seat 4 (fig. 1).
The chamber 12 is placed under a less severe vacuum than that of the enclosure to be isolated by means of the pipe 13, so that the traces of gas coming from leaks or from degassing of the O-ring 11, being evacuated immediately to the outside through this pipe 13, cannot enter the enclosure where the vacuum is created.
In a practical embodiment of a valve intended for the total isolation of a high vacuum enclosure, the body of the valve, the dimensions of which are 224 X 128 X 110 mm, is made of steel; tracks 2 and 3 have a diameter of 60 mm ; the thread 20 of the control rod 7 has a trapezoidal profile in order to withstand high stresses; the shutter is made of aluminum.
Voids of 10-7 mm of mercury have been created in some enclosures as follows - pumping is started with a pump open to the outside, that is to say discharging the gases into the external environment, l the valve plug being hooked to the bonnet; the shutter is placed on the seat and the annular clearance of the shutter is placed in communication with the pump; -the pumping is then continued by an evaporation and ionization pump.
