Device for piercing ventilation openings in smoking articles The present invention relates to a device for piercing. air vents in smoking articles, such as cigarettes, cigars and the like, and through which air can be drawn in when the smoker smokes the cigarette, cigar or the like.
The device for aerating smoking articles is characterized according to the invention in that it comprises a series of knives, arranged according to the generatrix of a cylinder, and inside a tube, so as to form a receptacle for an article, these knives being flexible, the tube having a camming surface in contact with said knives and means being arranged to impart a relative movement of the knives with respect to the camming surface, which is arranged so as to cause the knives in position to score the article introduced into the receptacle.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention, as well as several variants of detail.
Fig. 1 is an axial section of the first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a structural detail.
Fig. 3 is a partial section through an accessory used for disassembling the device.
Fig. 4 illustrates one way of using the accessory of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail variant.
Fig. 6 is an axial section showing a knife in place in the device provided with a tip. Fig. 7 is an axial sectional view of the second embodiment.
Figs. 8 to 11 show some variants of the cutting part of the knives and the corresponding shapes of the orifices obtained on cigarettes. The device shown in FIG. 1 comprises a tube 1 having an end 2 flared upwards and, at its lower end, a collar 4 determining an opening 5. A solid piston 6, provided with a threaded button 18 screwed on it, slides in this opening 5 and enters the interior cavity 3 of tube 1.
A set of knives 7 is fixed to the upper end of the piston 6 and can slide with the piston in the tube 1; it comprises a series of flat organs 8 directed upwards and narrowing in the form of narrower members 9 which end in cutting blades 10. The piston 6 is force-fitted into the disc 12 of the assembly 7 , and it can be mated above at 13 so as to be joined rigidly.
The piston 6 is surrounded by a coil compression coil spring which rests on the lower part of the disc 12 so as to push it together with the piston towards the open end 21 of the tube 1.
A ring 22, having an annular rim 25 bent inward and a flange 23, is mounted on the open end of the tube 1 and is fixed there by the rim 24 of the tube which is crimped on the flange 23. The ring 22 thus defines the open receiving end 21 of the device.
The set of knives 7 intended to pierce ventilation holes in cigarettes, cigars and similar objects, shown in FIG. 2, came from a cut blank. This blank has the shape of a star and it comprises several branches 8 oriented along rays and which narrow to form more tapered extensions ending in a sharp 10 point. The material from which the blank represented in fig. 2 is preferably sheet spring steel.
It will easily be understood that it is desirable for this material to be flexible in order to ensure that the parts 8, 9 and 10 return to the radial outer position after each drilling operation.
The opening of the disc 12 is located in the center with respect to the symmetrical branches 8. It will be noted that a small space 16 has been left between the roots of the various branches 8, so that, when the latter are folded upwards the along line 33, there remains a space 31 between two adjacent branches 8 of the part 7 once completed, this space ensuring the flexibility of the part.
To give the part 7 the shape necessary for it to function inside the tube 1, the blank can be placed in a die in which the branches 8 are straightened upwards by bending them along lines 33 and where the extensions 9 are slightly folded outwards at 14 and 17, then at an acute angle at 15 to bring them back inwards, along radii.
The cigarette or cigar that is introduced is guided by the rim 25 through the open end 21 inside the ring of knives 10 and the end of the cigarette, intended to be taken between the lips of the smoker. , abuts on the crimped head 13 of the piston 6, so that the drilled holes are placed correctly with respect to the end of the cigarette. The piston 6 is then lowered by pulling it by the button 18. The extensions 9 are, in this movement, pushed inwards by the pressure exerted at 27 and at 29 by the conical surface of the tube of the apparatus. .
It will be noted that, during this operation, the cigarette or cigar is driven downwards at the same time as the crown of knives 7 and that the position of the locations to be drilled does not change with respect to the knives 10 during this operation. When the piston 6 has reached the lower limit of its displacement, which is determined, in the embodiment shown, by the compression limit of the spring 20, the traction exerted on the piston 6 can then be released, which resumes its position. upper initial under the action of the spring 20. In this way, the cigarette or cigar has been pierced with holes in the manner indicated at 39, fig. 6.
The spring 20 can be omitted and, in this case, the piston can be returned to its initial position by returning it inside the device by pushing the button 18 by hand. The extensions 9 are applied by their elasticity on the inner surface 27 of the tube 1 such that, even if the apparatus does not have a spring 20, the resulting force prevents the piston from moving freely.
The ring 22 has the important function of protecting the casing of the cigarette or cigar from tears produced by the sharp points of the knives 10 and of centering the cigarette or cigar in the apparatus.
From the above description it appears that the cost of manufacturing the apparatus for piercing the ventilation holes in cigarettes, cigars or the like is greatly reduced due to the simplicity of the construction of the knife crown 10.
In this embodiment, the manufacture of a ring of knives 10 can mainly comprise two operations, the first of which consists in cutting the blank in the shape of a star and the second consists of embedding the blank to give the part its defined shape. .
To extract the crown of knives from the tube, an accessory 35 is used (fig. 3) which comprises a tubular part 37 provided at one of its ends with a stopper 36 which, in the case shown, has the shape of a 'a button.
The outside diameter of the tubular part 37 is smaller than the inside diameter of the opening 21 defined by the flange 25 and also smaller than the inside diameter of the lower part of the tube 1. As seen in FIG. 4, before threading the accessory into the device, the piston 6 is pushed downwards and it is held in its lowest position inside the tube 1.
The accessory 35 is then pushed into the opening 21 and forced to cover the crown formed by the extensions 9 and the knives 10 which are then brought together towards the center of the device, and the button is then removed. 18. The internal surface 38 of the accessory 35 then constitutes a guide which allows the piston 6 and the assembly 7 to be raised and extracted from the tube 1. The piston 6 is then pushed upwards by passing it through the tube. through the opening 5 so as to release the assembly 7 with the accessory 35 from the tube 1.
It is obvious that if the accessory 35 is not used, the upper parts of the parts 9, which are oriented radially outwards, will come into contact with the edge of the part 25, which will cause difficulties in disassembling the device during repairs, cleaning, etc.
Alternatively, the apparatus can be used as a cigarette holder as well as as an apparatus for forming valves in the casing of the cigarette, cigar or the like. In this case, as seen in fig. 6, the device is provided with a piston 6 pierced with a central hole 52 forming a passage for the smoke and one screws, or is fixed in any other way, a tip 54 pierced with a hole 53 on the piston 6, in place of the button 18. It will be noted, however, that the spaces 31 formed between the adjacent branches 8 allow air to pass, which can hamper the aspiration of the smoke if the cigarette does not form a tight seal .
This is why a cup 40 shown in FIG. 5 and whose role is to form a seal which sealingly closes the spaces 31. The cup 40 can be constituted by a simple piece of metal, plastic or the like, and it must have an outer diameter which allows it to be introduced to the bottom of the assembly 7.
The cup 40 must be tightly fitted in the assembly 7 so as to prevent relative movements between these two parts and to avoid its loss when the device is not in use. The cup 40 is hollowed out by a main cavity 44 whose walls 46 form a cone indicated by the number 50 in FIG. 5, the usefulness of this taper being described in the remainder of the text.
The cup 40 is pierced, at its lower part, with a hole 42 which, when it is mounted in the device, communicates with the hole 52 drilled in the piston 6. As mentioned above and shown. in fig. 6, the cup 40 is forced into the device until it abuts on the upper end of the piston 6, the opening 42.
and the hole 52 then constituting a continuous channel. We then introduce a knife A which can, for example, be provided with a filter tip A ', through the open end 21, in the scoop 40 and in the ring of knives 10 with sufficient force so that the walls conical 42 tighten with force the end of the cigarette at 56. The piston 6 is then lowered by pulling -on the nozzle 54, which actuates the knives 10 in such a way that they pierce the ventilation holes shown. in 39, fig. 6.
When the mechanism is brought upwards under the action of the spring 20, the cigarette is ready to be smoked in the device.
Fig. 7 shows the second embodiment of the invention which does not differ from that of FIG. 1 than by the different shape of the knives. The parts and similar organs, in fig. 1 and 7, are designated by the same reference numbers. We see in fig. 7 that the ring of knives consists of several branches 60 directed upwards and taken from a thin sheet of a metal having the qualities of a spring steel, for the reasons which have been explained above.
The branches 60 are folded inwards at point 62 and they end in a point cut in a V at 61. The point 61 of the branch 60 therefore forms a knife whose edges are interrupted by a shoulder 63 which prevents the knife. to penetrate more. far into the cigarette paper.
_ Fig. 8 shows in more detail the knife 61 described with reference to FIG. 7, and it shows a cigarette B in which the knives 61 have cut out valves 64. It will be noted that these V-shaped flaps 64 correspond to the shape of the knives 61. The role of the flaps 64 will be explained at greater length below. .
Fig. 9 shows another variant of the knife constituted by a branch 70 bent towards the interior at point 72, terminating in a blade 71 and having a shoulder 73. The branch <B> 70 '</B> does not differ of the branch 60 of FIG. 8 that in that the cutting edge of the knife 71 is rounded in the shape of a circular arc in the plane of the branch. The knives 71 cut out valves 74 in the cigarette C of FIG. 9, and we notice that these valves have, seen in plan, the shape of a semi-circle.
The branch 80, according to a variant shown in FIG. 10, is folded inwards at 82 and it carries a knife consisting of four pieces 83, 84, 86 and 87, and which, as can be seen in view a-a, has a cutting edge in the form of a cross. It will be noted in particular that the cutting edges 85 are not perpendicular to the axis of the upper end of the branch 80, but that they are directed inwards and that they end at point 85 "located at rear point 85 '.
The cigarette D of fig. 10 carries valves each of which has the shape of a cross drawn by the slots 88 which have been cut by the cutting edges 83, 84, 86 and 87, the tabs defined by these slots constituting the shutters-shutters 89.
Fig. 11 shows a branch 90 according to another variant and which carries a knife 91 having the general appearance of a wedge. It will be noted that the cutting edge 92 of the knife 91 comprises a substantially rectilinear part and that this edge 92 cuts a rectilinear slot 96 when it begins to penetrate into the envelope of the cigarette E. By continuing to penetrate into the envelope , the knife 91 cuts transverse slots 97 and the flaps 98 thus formed therefore act as a valve. We see in fig. 11 that this valve has the general shape of an I.
With regard to the description of the knives 6,1, 71, 85 and 91, we have spoken of the valves formed in a cigar, a cigar or the like. Tests have shown that lowering the combustion temperature reduces the production of hazardous materials, in particular the tars found in cigarette smoke. The role of the dampers is to reduce the temperature of the smoke. regulating the flow of air which is drawn in through the ventilation holes and mixed with the smoke from the combustion of tobacco.
When the smoker gradually increases his suction, which causes an increase in the intensity of the combustion, the valves open more and allow a flow of outside air to pass.
The valves formed by the apparatus described above act in the manner of automatic opening shutters, which exerts a very effective action on the undesirable effects of the dangerous substances contained in cigarette smoke and, in particular. , significantly reduces the proportion of tars in the smoke.
The device may also include an accessory particularly designed to facilitate its removal.
