Apparatus for determining the solubility of solids in liquids
The determination of the solubility of solid substances in liquids, for example of dyes in water or organ. Solvents, is one of the most important control tests, which often determines the usefulness of new products. It also serves to continuously monitor production.
(See literature on solubility determination: Houben Weyl, Meth. Der org. Chemie, 4th ed., 1955, Vol. 3/1, p. 219 and ff.)
Up to now there was no suitable apparatus for this important determination that would allow solubility determinations of solid substances, such as dyes, and in particular serial determinations, to be carried out under the same, reproducible conditions. Up until now, for example, the determination of colorants in normal laboratory glass vessels was done by hand by shaking a certain amount of colorant on the water bath in a glass flask with a measured amount of water or another solvent and after a certain time the solution through a filter Was filtered off undissolved.
It has been proven that this method has disadvantages, some of which are due to the sensitivity of the method to environmental influences (temperature, drafts, humidity), but some of which are also due to human individuality and inaccuracy. Scattering values and thus uncertain results are the direct consequence of these deficiencies, which are eliminated by the proposed invention.
The subject of the present invention is a device for determining the solubility of solid substances in liquids, which is characterized in that at least one flask provided with a reflux condenser and stirrer with a flexible axis, in which the solid substances are dissolved in a solvent, is immersed in a heating bath, in which at least one funnel serving for filtering is also arranged, and that the piston is arranged such that it can pivot about an axis that its contents pour into the funnel when tilted.
The device according to the invention offers the advantage that a plurality of such pistons are arranged next to one another, pivotably on a common shaft, so that serial determinations of several samples can be carried out simultaneously.
All stirrers are advantageously driven by a common drive device. This leads to perfectly comparable results of the same or different samples, and the apparatus allows a generally binding standardization of the solubility determination to be introduced.
example
The structure and mode of operation of the new device can be seen in the attached drawing, which advantageously consists of several identical pistons:
Piston a rotatably suspended at point b; flexible stirring device c with drive device d; Reflux condenser e; Seal f between solution flask a and reflux cooling tube c; Heating bath g with bath liquid h, with built-in funnel guide i, funnel k and filter I and and heating device m, cover n with swiveling parts o, corresponding to the size of the immersed solution flask a.
The seal f is drawn in two parts here; B. from a cork pad and a more elastic seal, z. B. made of rubber.
In the piston can also be a side, closable nozzle, z. B. for the introduction of solids, solvents, rinsing liquid, etc.
At point b there is an axis or shaft about which the piston or pistons can be tilted simultaneously. The bath advantageously contains a built-in thermometer.
A determination of the solubility with a dye and water is carried out with the described device, for example, as follows: Certain amounts of water and dye are poured into the solution flask, these are placed in the heating bath set to the prescribed temperature and the stirrer and reflux condenser are put into operation. After the heating period has elapsed, all flasks, which are attached to a common shaft, are emptied into the funnel by tipping them over and the flasks, after tilting back, are charged with a certain amount of rinsing liquid, which is also tipped onto the funnel for washing. The stirrers provided with flexible shafts can remain inside the flask.
The solubility is best assessed by examining any remaining residue. In addition, the throughput speed plays a certain role. In the scientifically exact determination of the solubility, a saturated solution is prepared in the solution flask, it is filtered off from the sediment as described and the filtrate is analyzed.
