Process for the production of screw nuts from metal powder and compression mold for carrying out the process Attempts to make nuts with threads by axial compression of metal powder in matrices have so far failed because the thread broke out at the foot.
The invention now aims to create a method and means with which any type of nut can be produced from metal powder without the risk of the thread breaking out on the foot, regardless of how many threads are pressed at the same time.
The method according to the invention consists in that metal powder is filled into an upwardly open die cavity which has a base and uninterrupted side walls that hold the powder together, that the punch is introduced into the powder mass essentially in the filling direction, forming a side surface of the nut, which closes the die cavity from above without compacting the powder and which has an externally threaded extension,
which is complementary to the hole to be formed in the nut, and that the powder is compressed transversely to the filling direction while the punch closes the die cavity, so that the powder compacts around the extension with an external thread and gives it the desired external shape .
To carry out the inventive method, a mold is preferably used, which is characterized by solid parts that have a Ma trizenhöhlung with a bottom and uninterrupted walls to hold the powder together, which cavity is open at the top, by a punch that is used for filling the die can be raised and subsequently lowered in order to determine the height of the nut in the filling direction, through a core-forming extension with thread, through means,
to allow a lowering of said core into the cavity and parts by laterally displaceable mold, which can be advanced when the punch has reached its lowest position, so that they compress the powder filled in transversely to the direction of movement of said punch and the shape of the nut to be produced determine.
Exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are shown in the drawing: FIG. 1 shows a partial section of a preferred compression mold in which the parts in the position are shown directly after the cavity of the mold has been filled.
Fig. 2 shows a similar section, but the parts assume the position in which they determine the axial dimensions of the pressed part.
FIG. 3 again shows a similar section to FIG. 1, but the parts are shown in the position they assume after the final pressing.
FIG. 4 shows a section along the line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
The die shown as an example is designed for the production of hexagon nuts; however, it is clear that the method is by no means limited to the production of nuts shaped in this way, but can also be used to advantage in the production of castle nuts, square nuts or wing nuts, for example.
The lower die 10 and the side walls 12, which form a whole therewith or are connected in some other way, together define a trough into which a centrally arranged vertical core pin 14 protrudes, which is under the action of a spring 16, which against a solid stop 18 and presses against a shoulder on the pin.
Directly above and in alignment with the core pin 14 is a punch 20 with a coaxial extension 22 having an external thread. In the trough, on opposite sides of the pin 14, there are two slides 24, 26 and means for moving them towards and away from the pin simultaneously.
As shown in Fig. 1, iron powder is filled into the filling opening of the mold, which is defined by the parts 10, 12, 14, 24 and 26, after the latter parts have been removed by a suitable distance from the pin 14, and the punch 20 has been raised completely.
Thereafter, the punch 20 is moved down into the position shown in Fig. 2, the edge of which protrudes beyond the mold sides and the extension 22 presses the spring-loaded core pin 14 down, so that the extension takes the position previously taken by the pin in the filling space .
The parts are now held in this relative position described above, and a strong pressure is exerted on the slide parts 24, 26 (for example by means of the rods 28, 30 by any mechanical or other means) so that they are evenly to the core pin 14 move towards it.
The parts 24, 26 are V-shaped re-entrant on the neighboring sides, such that at the end of their stroke they give the reduced filling space exactly six-cornered shape together with the sides 12. In doing so, they compress the metal powder around the extension 22 and form the desired thread inside the hexagonal mass.
It is clear that the V-shaped incisions at the effective ends of the parts 24, 26 generate a pressure component perpendicular to their direction of movement, which causes the thread on the extension 22 to be correctly pressed and also on the parts facing the side walls 12 is shaped.
After sufficient pressure has been exerted to achieve the desired properties in the pressed nut, which is readily apparent to those skilled in the art, the pressure effect is interrupted and the punch 20 is lifted, taking the pressed nut with it until it comes out of the sides 12 of the Shape comes out and can be unscrewed from projection 22; for example by means of a motor-driven rubber wheel or in some other way.
After this operation described above, the nut formed from powdered metal has sufficient compactness and uniformity to guarantee that a product with good strength is obtained after sintering.
While it is normally desirable to bring the punch 20 into contact with the sides 12 of the mold before the slides 24, 26 begin to move inward, such timing is not absolutely necessary.
If this is desired, the inward movement of the slide can begin while the punch 20 is still moving, but the latter should reach its end position before the lateral compression of the powder has ended.
