En même temps, la corrosion des appareils est moins importante ; - il permet de diminuer la quantité d'inhibiteurs de polymérisation éventuellement consommés. C'est là une économie importante car les inhibiteurs habi tuels, tels que l'hydroquinone ou le bleu de méthy lène, sont des produits coûteux qu'il faut fréquem ment utiliser en proportion importante. Dans le pré sent procédé, ces inhibiteurs restent presque totale ment dans la phase liquide après la séparation du sulfate et sont donc recyclés avec cette phase ;

Process for the manufacture of acrylic compounds The present invention relates to the manufacture of acrylic compounds (acids, esters), by sulfuric hydrolysis of the corresponding nitriles or cyanohydrins.
For the sulfuric hydrolysis at high temperature of these nitriles or cyanohydrins, it is theoretically sufficient to use 1/2 molecule of sulfuric acid per molecule of nitrile or cyanohydrin. But we know that, if we want to obtain a good yield, it is necessary to operate in the presence of an excess of sulfuric acid, practically to use from 1 to 2 molecules of sulfuric acid per molecule of nitrile or cyanohydrin.
In the known processes, the acrylic compounds formed are separated from the reaction mixture by decantation or more often by distillation. The residue consists of an aqueous liquid containing sulfuric acid, acid ammonium sulfate and organic products such as: acrylic compounds not quantitatively separated, reusable intermediate products, heavier and more or less colored by-products , polymerization inhibitors. In the manufacture of esters, this liquid may additionally contain a certain amount of the alcohol used for esterification.
Where possible, the waste liquid is currently very often directly discharged, but attempts have sometimes been made to reuse, at least in part this liquid, for example by neutralizing it with ammonia to form neutral ammonium sulphate which 'then crystallized.
The recovery of this waste liquid is however of interest only if it is economically advantageous, which was not generally the case until now on the one hand, in fact, an ammonium sulphate is obtained. - colored nium loaded with impurities hindering its crystallization, which gives it a mediocre market value and, on the other hand, only the value of sulfuric acid is recovered under the most favorable conditions and of the ammonia contained, excluding organics which are lost.
The present invention enables this upgrading to be carried out in an economically advantageous manner. It relates to a process for the manufacture of acrylic compounds by sulfuric hydrolysis of the corresponding nitriles or cyanhydrins and with the production of a waste liquid containing sulfuric acid, ammonium acid sulfate and organic products, characterized in that the acid ammonium sulphate contained in this waste liquid is crystallized by cooling,
the cries are separated from the stock solution containing excess sulfuric acid, heavy organic products of varying carbon content are removed from said liquid, and the acid solution which has undergone the recovery and purification treatments is reused for hydrolysis .
Crystallization can take place at low temperature, but it is generally preferable to cool only to a temperature close to room temperature and included, for example, between about 100 and 30o.
The crystals can be separated, for example, by filtration or by dewatering. The elimination of heavy organic products with more or less carbon is usually done by adsorbing them hot or cold, continuously or continuously, on adsorbent earth or carbon. Activated charcoal is well suited for this purpose. The solution to be purified can be passed through a bed of adsorbent material or it can be mixed with the solution and this suspension passed through a filter on which the adsorbent material is retained.
It is also possible, preferably before crystallization of the acid ammonium sulphate, to subject the waste liquid to evaporation under reduced pressure, or even under vacuum. Such evaporation simultaneously removes, on the one hand, part of the water from the residue - the subsequent crystallization then allowing a higher proportion of the salt present to be separated and the acid collected after crystallization thus being at a higher concentration - on the other hand, volatile organic products, which are sent either to the esterification or to the crude acrylic esters produced.
If the purified solution has a sulfuric acid content lower than that required for entering the reactor, it is re-concentrated by adding concentrated sulfuric acid or oleum.
Finally, in particular during the manufacture of methacrylic acid or esters, it is possible to subject the solution resulting from the hydrolysis and / or esterification to treatment under reduced pressure before cooling; thus separating the organic products which can be upgraded in the reaction (intermediate products, methacrylic acid and / or methacrylic esters and / or alcohols) which are then directly recycled to the hydrolysis.
The crystals of acid sulfate or ammonium bisulfate obtained in the process according to the present invention can be used, either in solid form or after redissolution, for the manufacture of neutral ammonium sulfate, in a neutralization apparatus and evaporation of any type commonly used for the direct manufacture of this salt. The salt obtained under these conditions is practically white and of good commercial value.
The acidic solution resulting from filtration or dewatering contains in solution, in addition to sulfuric acid and a certain proportion of the ammonium salt initially present, all the organic products (except the volatile products in the case where the residues were subjected to evaporation prior to crystallization). The remaining proportion of ammonium sulfate varies with the initial concentration of the solution subjected to crystallization and with the temperature of crystallization.
The organic products present in the residues consist in part of usable products, in particular esters or acrylic acids and compounds intermediate between these esters or these acids and the starting materials; they also include heavier by-products consisting in part of non-volatile carbon impurities.
Before or after the adsorption treatment, it may be advantageous to take part of the acid solution and introduce it into the crystallizer to make the crystalline magma more fluid and to facilitate the filtration of the crystals. It should be noted that the part of the solution thus added has the same concentrations of sulfuric acid and of ammonium sulphate as the stock solution of the crystals and that its introduction does not modify the solution-crystal balance.
The process according to the invention therefore makes it possible, first of all, to obtain, in a particularly simple and economical manner, without the addition of ammonia, practically pure sulphate of good commercial value, which corresponds to a recovery of corresponding sulfuric acid and ammonia.
On the other hand, by recycling the filtered acid solution, a saving of sulfuric acid is ensured, and an improvement in the yield of acrylic acids or esters, following the simultaneous recycling of the products of the reaction and of the intermediate products which remain. dissolved in the liquid phase after separation of the sulfate; - it makes it possible to simplify the manufacture since, if the organic matter contained in the residues are recovered, it is possible to tolerate a greater quantity of residues and not to push the extraction as much, in particular by working at a lower reaction temperature which reduces the proportion of by-products and the coloring of the residue.
At the same time, the corrosion of the devices is less important; - it makes it possible to reduce the quantity of polymerization inhibitors possibly consumed. This is a significant saving because the usual inhibitors, such as hydroquinone or methylene blue, are expensive products which must frequently be used in large proportions. In the present process, these inhibitors remain almost completely in the liquid phase after the separation of the sulfate and are therefore recycled with this phase;
- It makes it possible, when acrylic esters are produced, to reduce the consumption of corresponding alcohols, a part of which always remained in the sulfuric residues, by recycling said alcohols.
Finally, and contrary to what one might fear, the recycling of the filtered acid solution does not interfere with the hydrolysis reaction, despite the presence of an appreciable quantity of dissolved ammonium sultafe.
In the case of the manufacture of methacrylic acid or esters, hydrolysis occurs in the presence of 1001% sulfuric acid. For this manufacture, the reconcentration of the acid solution recycled by adding sulfuric acid or oleum, due to the quantity of water present in the purified solution,
gives 100% more acid than must be introduced in the hydrolysis process. In this case, the total recovery of the sulfuric acid therefore results in the production of a quantity of sulfuric acid of the required title, greater than that which can be used in the process.
The treatment under reduced pressure or, preferably, under vacuum, therefore makes it possible to reduce the consumption of nitrile or cyanohydrin and possibly alcohol. On the other hand, after removal of the ammonium sulphate crystals and before treatment on adsorbent earth or carbon, the acid solution is partially reconcentrated by heat in the presence of a small amount of an oxidant, such as. nitric acid.
The quantity of 100% sulfuric acid, obtained during the subsequent concentration with oleum, is thus limited to the necessary quantity, and at least part of the heavy organic products which are coking are burned simultaneously, by coking them. pollute the acid solution and could be troublesome during its subsequent recycling. The materials thus coked by the combined action of heat and the oxidant are then stopped during the passage over adsorbent earth.
When it is carried out under the above conditions, the process therefore makes it possible to ensure the complete recovery of the materials contained in the acid residue resulting from the hydrolysis and / or esterification. The light organic materials dissolved in this acidic residue (methacrylic acid or esters, intermediate products, excess alcohol) are recovered by evaporation under reduced pressure and can be returned to hydrolysis or esterification or mixed with condensed products at the end of esterification.
Cooling separates, in the form of acid ammonium sulfate crystals, about 80% of the ammonia and the 2 / s of the sulfuric acid contained in the residue. Recycling enables the non-crystallized sulfuric acid and ammonia to be returned to the circuit so that a quantity of ammonia corresponding to that which was produced is collected in the form of acid ammonium sulphate.
The method according to the present invention can be implemented in simple apparatus known in themselves.
The invention is now explained in detail in the description and in the exemplary embodiments below, with reference to the attached drawing. In this drawing Fig. 1 is a diagram relating to an application of the process according to the invention to the manufacture of acrylic acids or esters. The esterification stage which does not exist for the production of acrylic acids has been surrounded by a dotted rectangle. Likewise, the locations before re-cooling and / or after separation of the crystals have been shown in dotted lines, where the elimination of the more or less carbon-bearing heavy organic products can be placed.
Reconcentration with sulfuric acid or oleum which is not always necessary has also been shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 shows a device which can be used for manufacturing ethyl acrylate.
Fig. 3 is a flow diagram of the operations in an application of the process to the manufacture of methacrylic acids and esters.
Fig. 4 represents a device used for the application of the method. In the device of FIG. 2, new sulfuric acid is introduced into a tank 1, fitted with a stirrer, via pipe 2, and the polymerization inhibitors via pipe 3. A pipe 4 brings the recycled acid to tank 1, including the mixture with the new acid is homogenized by the agitator 1 '. The titer of the acid solution is adjusted to the appropriate value by varying the quantity and possibly the titer of the fresh acid.
A pipe 5 brings, passing through a flowmeter 51, the acid into a hydrolysis reactor 6 where, on the other hand, is introduced, through the pipe 7 and the flowmeter 71, the acrylated nitrile to be treated. From the reactor 6, the hydrolyzed mixture is led to a column 8, placed above a boiler 9 and at the top of which a condenser 10 is mounted.
At the bottom of column 8, ethyl alcohol intended here to be esterified into acrylic ester is introduced via a pipe 11; at the same time, if necessary, a certain suitable quantity of makeup water can be introduced. The ester formed (ethyl acrylate) escapes through the top of column 8 to condenser 10 where it is condensed.
The acid residue flows from the boiler 9, through a filter 12, into a crystallizer 13 consisting of a trough provided with a cooling jacket and a screw conveyor and in which the acid ammonium sulphate is crystallized. . From the crystallizer, the mixture of crystals and liquid is brought to a centrifuge 14 from which the acid sulfate is removed at 15 and a more or less colored acid solution which flows to a tank 16. The solution is removed. recovery from tank 16 by a pump 17 which sends it through a filter 18 to mixing tank 1.
In tank 16, a small amount of activated earth can be added to the liquid in order to facilitate filtration and adsorb the colored by-products. A pipe 19 allows part of the acid solution to be recycled, after its filtration at 18 to the crystallizer 13, and the rest of the acid solution by 4 to tank 1.
In fig. 4, the equipment elements common to the devices of the fi-. 2 and 4 have the same references. For the manufacture of a methacrylic ester, the products from the hydrolysis reactor 6 and from the esterification column 8 first pass through a vacuum apparatus 20 where the volatile products are extracted which, after condensation in 21, are recycled through line 22, for example, to column 8. The remaining solution passes successively through a filter 12, into the crystallizer 13, into the spinner 14, into the tank 16 and into a concentration device 23 , heated for example over open fire, into which is introduced with 24 an oxidant such as, for example, nitric acid.
The resulting solution, partly reconcentrated and in which, by the combined action of heat and the oxidant, the heavy organic products have been coked, is taken up by the pump 17 to be sent to the filter 18 from where it joined by line 4 to tank 1 where, thanks to the oleum make-up introduced in 2, it is brought back as 100% of SO4Hz. In the case of the manufacture of ethyl acrylate, the procedure was as follows with the device of FIG. 2.
The hydrolysis reactor 6 was continuously fed with 21.2 kg / hour of acrylic nitrile with 75.4 kg / hour of 78% sulfuric acid and 37 g / hour of methylene blue, from the tank. 1, by 5.
The hydrolyzed mixture then underwent continuous esterification by the introduction by 11 of 46 kg / hour of ethanol, and 10.8 kg / hour of water per 11, in the assembly consisting of the boiler 9 and the esterification column 8 with filling elements, which received the hydrolyzed mixture at the top.
72.4 kg of ethyl acrylate were obtained, corresponding to an overall yield of 96.5%, which was condensed at 10.
Simultaneously, the sulfuric residue was withdrawn continuously from the boiler 9 at a rate of 81 kg / h. The liquor, which was brown in color, threaded at 12 was then cooled to -I-150 in crystallizer 13 and the crystals formed were filtered off at 14:
At the outlet 15, 40.5 kg / h of wet crystals were obtained containing 93.2% ammonium bisulfate and 3.7% free sulfuric acid.
The residual acid, i.e. 39.7 kg / h, had the following com position

The results were quite similar to those obtained with fresh acid only, but the yield of acrylic ester was 97.5 - 98%; on the other hand, the bisulphate extracted by crystallization exactly represented the theoretical quantity produced, since the recycling had brought the quantity of sulphate necessary for the saturation of the residual acid.
It is therefore clearly seen that the sulphate supplied, in the form dissolved in the acid, to the mixture entering into the hydrolysis does not interfere with the reaction at all.
These results remained unchanged after prolonged operation with recycling: the acrylate yield was still 97.5% and the hourly production of wet crystallized bisulphate of 49 kg, grading 93,
8% bisulfate and 4% sulfuric acid. The residual acid had the composition

A small quantity of inhibitor was destroyed, but it was found that it was sufficient to add at most about 10% of the total quantity to compensate for the losses: a significant saving is therefore made on these expensive products.
With the device of FIG. 4 in the manufacture of methyl methacrylate, the hydrolysis apparatus 6 was continuously supplied with 20.4 kg / h of acetone cyanohydrin at 98 0/0 34.6 kg / h of acid 100% sulfuric acid 37 g / h methylene blue.
The hydrolyzed mixture underwent in column 8 an esterification by the addition of 22.6 kg / h of methanol, and 12.7 kg / h of water.
At the top of column 8, after passing through condenser 10, 37.5 kg / h of crude methyl methacrylate were collected, which corresponds to a yield of 92%.
From the boiler 9 there flowed 49.5 kg / h of a sulfuric residue consisting essentially of 41.4% of pure sulfuric acid, 30.7% of ammonium sulphate, the remainder being water, unprocessed methanol and carbonaceous materials.
This residue was introduced, still continuously, into the evaporation column 20, heated to 130 ° C., and maintained under a reduced pressure of 100 mm of mercury. The products (methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and methanol) thus extracted from the solution and which represented 1.5% of methyl methacrylate were condensed in 21.
The acidic residue, now free from volatiles, was taken to crystallizer 13 where it was cooled. The acidic magma obtained in the crystallizer was introduced into the spinner 14.
From said wringer, 22.8 kg / h of crystals composed of 93% ammonium bisulphate and containing only 3% free sulfuric acid were extracted, on the one hand,
on the other hand, 20.2 kg / h of an acid solution which titrated 63% in free sulfuric acid and 14.9% in ammonium sulphate, the remainder being constituted by water and organic products heavy.
In the heater 23, this solution was heated to 200 - 220 C, over an open flame and during the heating 20 cm3 of nitric acid at 36 B per liter of solution were added to it to facilitate the coking of the carbonaceous products contained. . The dirty acid solution obtained naked was added with a little adsorbent earth and then filtered through 18. 180 kg / h of a lightly colored clear acid solution was obtained containing 70.3% of sulfuric acid which was obtained. was recycled to the hydrolysis reactor 6 after mixing in the tank 1, with an addition of oleum which brought its titer to 100% of S0.1112.
