Le dessin annexé représente, à titre d'exemple, une forme d'exécution de l'objet de l'invention. Tou tes les parties identiques dans les différentes figures sont désignées par les mêmes signes de référence. La fig. 1 représente les bandes de dégradés telles qu'elles apparaissent sur les films positifs ; la fig. 2 est un diagramme schématique d'une installation de double impression comportant un dis positif d'impression de dégradés et un dispositif d'im pression continue destiné à imprimer les images et les bandes de dégradés sur le film positif ; la fig. 3 est un diagramme schématique du dispo sitif d'impression de dégradés ;
The present invention relates to a photographic double printing installation comprising a device for printing gradients.
In Swiss Patent No. 340160 there is disclosed a method and apparatus for photographically printing degradation bands on a positive film. The technique described in this patent consists in photographing a panoramic scene in several parts forming a mosaic so as to form several complementary negative films. Positive films are then produced from these various negatives on which the degradation bands are overprinted in the edge outside the image frame. These degradation bands are meant to make them invisible. the junction lines of the various images when these films are projected on a panoramic screen.
When the panoramic image is formed by three contiguous sections, it is necessary to provide each side of the film with the center of degradation bands while the side films are each provided with a single degradation band arranged to cover the film. degradation strip adjacent to the center film so as to obtain a compensation for the luminosity. The essential advantage of this technique is that it eliminates the need to provide masks or other degrading mechanisms in the projector itself.
The object of the invention is to provide a double-printing installation for photo graphically printing degrading bands as well as images photographed from a negative film on an unexposed positive film.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention. All identical parts in the different figures are designated by the same reference signs. Fig. 1 represents the gradient bands as they appear on the positive films; fig. 2 is a schematic diagram of a double printing installation comprising a gradient printing device and a continuous printing device intended to print the images and the gradient bands on the positive film; fig. 3 is a schematic diagram of the gradient printing device;
fig. 4 is a perspective view of the gradient printing device; fig. 5 shows, in front elevation, one form of a degrading mask for use with the gradient printing device; fig. 6 illustrates a second variant of such a mask, and FIG. 7 shows a third variant of such a mask.
Before describing in more detail the construction and the operation of the double-printing device according to the invention, it seems appropriate to recall in general the nature of the films to be produced.
As can be seen from FIG. 1, the positive films intended to be projected on a panoramic screen consist of three bands 10, 11 and 12 each provided along its longitudinal edges on each side of the frame with the images of the perforations usu them for driving the film. The panoramic scene which was photographed by three individual cameras is distributed equally over the three films. In addition to the image inside its frame, the film 10 in the center has bands of gradients 13 and 14 covering the vertical edges of the image frames.
The edge to the right of the frames in the film. side 11 has a degrading band 15 and the edge of the side film 12 to the left of the frames has a degrading band 16. When the positive films are projected, the edges of the frames overlap on the screen, the degrading bands producing then a graduation of brightness from full screen illumination on the white side to zero light transmission at the dark end. As said bands at the edge of the contiguous films are degraded in the opposite direction, the graduation of the light intensity produced by a strip is compensated on the screen by the strip which covers it and which forms part of the contiguous film.
This results in a constant illumination which effectively eliminates the lines of coincidence or the streaks, which would otherwise be inevitable, at the junction of the two films. As the degrading bands are printed directly on the positive films, it is no longer necessary to provide devices for degrading in the projectors.
It is understood that the term “degraded or degrading bands” is understood to mean not only bands formed by parallel lines the interval of which gradually decreases but also bands in which a gradual reduction in transparency has been obtained in another way.
Fig. 2 shows a printing device capable of printing the degrading bands directly onto the positive films before the negative images are transferred thereto. An unexposed positive film 17 is unwound from a reel 18 and transported on rollers through a degreasing device generally designated by the reference 19. The film is advanced by means of a toothed wheel 20 meshing with the side film slots as is the case with film advance in general. The construction of this printing device will be described in more detail with reference to Figs. 3 to 7.
For the moment, it will suffice to mention that the device 19, by means of a light beam acting in combination with suitable masks, projects degrading bands on the unexposed film so as to produce bands such as those illustrated in fig. 1.
The unexposed positive film 17 is then led by suitable rollers into a continuous printing device 21 of known construction. At the same time as the unexposed positive film, and superposed thereon, an exposed and developed negative wire 21 unwound from a spool 23 is fed into the continuous printing device. the unexposed positive film, provided with the degrading bands, is again exposed, this time through the negative film, so that the photographed scenes which are on the negative film are transferred to the positive film.
In the case of the center film intended for a multiple projector system, the degrading bands are applied by the gradient printing device to each edge of the film while when the films intended for the side projectors are passed through the device. in the gradient printing a single degrading band is printed thereon in the manner described above. As a result, each film is subjected to a double printing operation once in the gradient printing device and again in the continuous printing device.
The gradient printing device is equipped with a number of degrading masks of different shape and profiles, each mask being intended for a scene of a particular kind. Control means are provided to selectively bring the masks into their working position. Such a control device can be constituted by a selective switch acting in common with electromagnetic devices to mechanically move the masks which can be mounted on appropriate slides. The manner in which the masks are selectively controlled in the gradient printing device is as follows: When the operator photographs a scene, he then indicates on a list the lens setting.
This listing accompanies the negative film. The film cutter places a small copper electrode on the negative which is pressed along the perforation in advance to mark each change of scene.
When the negative film 22 comprising the copper electrodes makes contact with a toothed wheel 24 made of an electrically conductive material, electrical pulses are sent to a tape reader 25. This reader comprises a perforated signaling strip with holes, as shown below. These holes are scanned by brushes capable of transmitting selection signals intended to actuate the solenoids or electromagnets for the masks. To perforate the strip, a positive device is provided which has as many positions as there are mask electromagnets. If, for example, a given scene requires a mask of a particular type, the perforation is placed in such a way that it actuates the solenoid associated with this mask.
Thus, the reader, in response to the electrical impulse coming from the marks on the film, automatically advances the desired masks into the working position to effect the gradients.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate details of the gradient printing device. The unexposed positive film 17 passes an opening in the housing 26 ventilated by a fan. A separation 27 centered on the entry opening of the film divides this box into two compartments A and B. In compartment A is mounted a light source 28, for example a lamp of adjustable intensity, the rays of which are directed towards a plane mirror 29 through a filter 30 capable of allowing only white rays to pass.
The rays reflected by the mirror 29 are directed along an optical axis perpendicular to the axis of the rays emanating from the light source, these reflected rays passing successively through a condenser lens 31 and an objective lens 32 to strike the edge. of film 17 close to the progress drills of the latter. Between the condenser 31 and the objective 32 is interposed a movable degradation mask 33 which is placed so as to intercept or stop the rays projected on the film and thus form the degraded band on the film. An identical device is provided for compartment B of the printing device, each member of compartment A having its counterpart in compartment B.
As can be seen from FIGS. 5, 6 and 7, three pairs of masks 33a, 33b and 33c are provided, each having a different profile conditioned for a scene of a determined type. One mask of each pair is mounted in one of the compartments of the printing device. When printing a film from the tine to the center camera both chambers of the printing device are used simultaneously, while for films intended for the side cameras only one of the chambers is used so as to form only one. degrading stripe on the film.
An individual set of electromagnetic solenoids 34 is provided for each set of masks so that when a determined set of solenoids is energized, the corresponding masks are brought into their working position. The embodiment described above has three pairs of masks, but it is understood that any other number of sets of masks can be used in the same way.
Thus, when the degrading lines are printed on the positive films, the masks 33a, 33b and 33c are selectively actuated in response to pulses originating from reference contacts on the negative films and transmitted to the mechanism 21. For each scene the appropriate mask is automatically placed in working position. When the mask image is projected along the inside of the advancing perforations on the unexposed film, it may be located inside or outside, relative to the focal point, depending on the diffusion that the we want to obtain.
