Method and device for carrying out chemical reactions
The present invention relates to a
Method and device for carrying out chemical reactions.
In the case of continuous reactions between immiscible phases, which are carried out in a reaction vessel to which the reaction components are continuously fed and from which the reaction mixture is continuously withdrawn and fed to a separation device, the residence times of the two phases in the reaction zone are generally the same.
As a rule, the desired chemical reaction takes place in one of the phases, while the other phase releases reaction components to the first-mentioned phase and absorbs reaction components from the same. It is therefore advisable to make the individual residence times of the reaction components independent of one another and of the ratio of the amounts of the components fed in, so that the desired exchange of material between the phases can take place simultaneously with the chemical reactions.
A method suitable for achieving individual residence times is to convey some of the components leaving the separation device back into the reaction vessel.
This measure changes both the quantitative ratio of the phases in the reaction vessel and the residence time of the components.
The present process for carrying out chemical reactions, wherein both the starting materials and the reaction products are present in two liquid, not completely miscible phases, which are mixed in a reaction zone and fed to a separation zone, and some of the components leaving the separator enter the reaction zone is returned, is characterized in that liquid from the middle layers of the separation zone, where a partial separation of the two phases has only occurred, is returned to the reaction zone.
According to the present invention, the quantitative ratio of the phases and the residence times of the components can thus be regulated as desired without the aid of products separated from the separating device. The process according to the invention is preferably suitable for the continuous implementation of chemical reactions in the countercurrent principle and can be used in particular for the reaction of toluene with nitrating acids.
It is expedient to return at least half of the total quantities of the separated products emerging from the separating device to the reaction vessel. In practice, however, it has been shown that it can be advantageous to use a much larger return current. So it has z. For example, it has been shown that a return flow that is the same size, twice as large or even over ten times as large as the quantities of the separated products leaving the separation device can be useful in order to increase the residence time of one phase compared to that of the other phase .
In addition to the ability to control the chemical and physical processes by regulating the residence times of the reaction components and other conditions, the invention also creates other advantages that are particularly evident when dealing with reaction mixtures that are more or less difficult let disassemble, as z. B. is the case with nitration reactions.
Because a partially separated emulsion, i.e. an emulsion from which the larger or more easily separated drops or emulsified particles have been removed, the separating device can be given much smaller dimensions, which reduces the risk involved in handling explosives can.
An apparatus suitable for carrying out the process according to the invention has one or more reaction vessels arranged in series, which are equipped with mixing devices, each reaction vessel working together with a separator. The separators have inlets which are connected to the reaction vessels and outlets for the separated reaction products and for partially separated reaction mixture. The outlet for partially separated emulsion is arranged at a distance from the inlet connected to the reaction vessel and at a height between the level of the upper outlet intended for the discharge of the separated light phase and the level of the lower outlet for the discharge of the heavy phase Phase specific outlet lies.
The outlet for the emulsion is connected to the reaction container so that partially separated reaction mixture can be conveyed back into the reaction container. The outlet can be slidably arranged in order to be able to drain off partially separated emulsion of prescribed composition.
It is advisable to maintain a liquid level in the separating devices that is slightly higher than the level in the reaction vessel, since in this way the separated phases and the partially separated emulsion can flow back to the reaction vessel under the effect of gravity. The promotion of the reaction mixture from the reaction vessel, e.g. B. a nitriding device, after the separating device can be accomplished with the aid of a pump or the like. A simple way is to use the mixing device arranged in the reaction vessel in order to convey the reaction mixture to a higher level. For this purpose, for example, a mixing device in the form of a pump wheel can be used, the circumference of which is partially surrounded by a pressure chamber which is connected to the separating device.
Another possibility is to use a U-shaped reaction container, in one leg of which a propeller or a turbine wheel is built in, so that the liquid in the other leg is driven to a higher level, thereby enabling the liquid to be conveyed into the separating device.
In order to regulate the amount of the partially separated emulsion conveyed back to the reaction vessel, a valve is expediently installed in the return pipeline. The metering of the return flow can of course also be achieved by means of appropriately dimensioned openings or by appropriately dimensioning the pipe diameter.
It is not necessary to arrange the reaction vessel and the separating device separately from one another. They can be combined into a single apparatus.
As a rule, it will be expedient to use a system which is composed of several units having a reaction vessel and a separating device.
The invention will now be explained in exemplary embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
1 is a vertical section through a reaction device cooperating with a separator,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same reaction apparatus and separator,
Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of the separator in longitudinal section,
Figure 4 is a transverse section of the separator shown in Figure 3;
5 shows a section through an embodiment of the separator in which the shell of the separator has the shape of a double cone,
6 shows a plan view of a plant made up of several units, each consisting of a reaction device and a separator connected to the latter, and
FIG. 7 is an elevation of the plant shown in FIG.
The reaction vessel R shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 (hereinafter referred to as the reactor) has a U-shaped vessel with two legs 1 and 2 and a pipe 3 connecting the two. At their upper ends, the two legs are also connected to one another by a tube 6. The reactants are introduced through inlets 4 and 5. By means of a turbine wheel 8 on the drive shaft 7, liquid can be driven from the limb 1 into the limb 2 and from this into the limb 1. By regulating the speed of the turbine wheel 8 and appropriately dimensioning the diameter of the pipe parts 3 and 6, it is possible to maintain a liquid level in the leg 2 that is higher than the liquid level in the leg 1. The separator S is through the pipe 9 with the reactor R connected.
The separator has the shape of a rectangular box 10 and is equipped with a distributor 11 for the mixture flowing out of the reactor, an outlet 12 for the separated light component and an outlet 13 for the heavy component. At a distance from the inlet and at a height that is between the levels of the outlets of the separated components, a further outlet 14 is provided for partially separated emulsion. This outlet is equipped with adjustable wings 15 and 16 with which the height of the opening of the outlet can be adjusted. The partially separated emulsion is conveyed back through the pipe 18 and the regulating valve 17 to the reactor. Heat exchangers 19 and 20 are provided to regulate the temperature of the reaction mixture.
The separator can also be equipped with a heat exchange jacket (not shown).
The apparatus described above works as follows: The reaction components are introduced through the inlets 4 and 5, mixed by means of the turbine wheel 8 and driven through the pipe system 1, 3, 2, 6, the chemical reaction and the physical exchange taking place at the same time. The reaction mixture is continuously conveyed into the separator S in the form of an emulsion. In the separator the ten components separate under the influence of gravity, the light component rising to the surface and continuously escaping through the outlet 12. The heavy component sinks to the bottom and is continuously discharged through the outlet 13. In the part of the space located between the separated components, partially separated emulsion is drawn off and is conveyed back into the mixing limb 1 of the reactor R.
The conveyance is made possible by the fact that the liquid level in the separator is higher than the liquid level in leg 2 than in leg 1. The amount of the withdrawn, partially separated emulsion can be regulated by means of valve 17 as desired.
If the blades 15 and 16 are set to a lower level, the backflow is formed from the liquid layer enriched with the heavy component, so that the concentration of the heavy component in the apparatus increases.
This increases the dwell time of the heavy component in the apparatus. At the same time, the concentration of the light component in the return flow decreases, so that its residence time in the apparatus is shorter.
The wings 15 and 16 can be smooth, grooved or perforated. They can also be made of wire mesh or wire mesh to facilitate the passage of the separated phase. Instead of two wings made of wire mesh, you can also use a pipe made of wire mesh with a square, elliptical or circular cross-section, which has the same diameter over its entire length or has a larger diameter at the inlet end.
Instead of through the bottom of the separator, the outlet for the partially separated emulsion can also be passed through the end wall of the separator opposite the inlet for the emulsion or through a longitudinal wall. In this case the wire mesh pipe can be arranged more or less horizontally and in such a way that the free end of the pipe and the free openings in the sides of the pipe are between the levels of the outlets for the separated phases.
The type of separator just described is shown in Fig. 3 in longitudinal section and in Fig. 4 in cross section along the line A-A of FIG. The emulsion enters the separator from the reactor through the pipe 9 and is distributed through the element 11, which consists of perforated plates with wire mesh packing inserted between them. The light phase is discharged through pipe 12 and the heavy phase through pipe 13. Partially separated emulsion flows through the perforated tube 21 to the outlet 14. During the passage of the emulsion through the tube 21, separated light phase can escape upwards through the holes in the tube.
In a similar way, separated heavy phase can sink to the bottom through the holes in the pipe.
If the return flow is increased by opening the valve 17, the concentration of the phase that is already predominant in the apparatus is further increased.
When the return flow is weakened, the proportion of the phases in the return flow will more and more approximate the proportion of the products separated off.
The conveyance of the return flow to the reactor can also be carried out using gravity instead of e.g. B. be accomplished by using pumps.
The design of the reactor and also of the separator can be modified in various ways. The reactor can e.g. B. have the shape of a cylindrical vessel, which can be equipped with cooling coils, a turbine wheel, etc.
Part of the liquid thrown away by the turbine wheel can be accommodated in a special chamber and conveyed from this into the separator, in which the liquid level is higher than in the reactor.
Another embodiment of the separator is shown in FIG. In a double-conical container 1, the reaction mixture or the emulsion is introduced through the inlet 9 tangentially into the middle zone. The light component which separates out at the upper end of the vessel is discharged through the outlet 12, while the heavy component which separates out at the bottom of the vessel is discharged through the outlet 13. Partially separated emulsion is drained through the outlet 14. The opening of the outlet 14 can be adjusted in the vertical direction by means of a telescopic tube. It is useful to equip the separator with a thermoregulator, e.g. B. with a hot water jacket.
6 and 7, a system is shown which is composed of a plurality of units consisting of a reactor and a separator of the type shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, and is used for the nitration of toluene to tri nitrotoluene suitable. The system consists of the reactors R1, R2 ... R ″, Rn + 1 and the corresponding separators S1, 52 ... so, Sn + 1. From the container 21 a certain amount of toluene is introduced into the reactor R1 per minute , while a certain amount of nitrating acid is fed from the container 22 per minute.
The reactors and the separators are then put into operation in such a way that the lighter nitro bodies pass from the separator S1 into the reactor R2, from the separator S2 into the reactor R, etc. until they finally leave the separator Sn + 1 in the form of trinitrotoluene . The heavier nitrating acid, which is deposited at the bottom of the separator S "+1, flows into the reactor Rn and out of the separator Sn into the next reactor and so on until it finally leaves the separator S1.
In each reactor-separator unit there is a return flow of partially separated emulsion in the manner already described above. It is advisable to introduce nitric acid, oleum or mixed acid in the form of additional amounts of acid at various points in the system. Thus, the acid contained in the container 22 can have a relatively small nitric acid content, with fresh nitric acid being fed to the reactors in accordance with the consumption of the nitric acid during the nitration reaction. In the same way, the concentration of the water formed in the reaction can be kept low by adding oleum.
By returning an emulsion enriched with nitrating acid, the residence time of the nitrating acid in the system is increased, which facilitates the reaction and increases the yield.
It is advisable to return the separated products discharged from the various separators 5 to 15 times.
The return of partially separated emulsion in continuous nitration creates various advantages over the method in which products that have already been separated off are returned.
The dimensions of the separator can be kept smaller. Furthermore, the entire system can be regulated more easily, which means that the time that elapses until equilibrium is reached is shorter. The setting of the conditions in one unit does not affect the neighboring units.
This can be seen from the fact that the emerging streams of the separated products do not change when the proportions and residence times in the reactors are changed.
Another advantage of the method according to the invention, which is of particular importance with regard to handling explosives, is that only small amounts of the separated nitro bodies are retained in the system (as long as the nitro bodies are emulsified, the risk is small). As soon as the more easily separable parts of the nitro body have separated, they are diverted, whereas it was previously necessary to wait until the nitro body had completely separated from the emulsion.
The present invention is applicable not only to nitration reactions, but also to numerous other processes in which chemical reactions between fluid, non-homogeneously miscible components with different specific weights are to be carried out.
Examples of such reactions are those between organic esters and aqueous solutions of acids and alkalis, oxidations of organic substances with sulfuric acid, reactions with complex-forming, selectively acting extraction solvents, etc.
