Abstract

126,355. Clayton Aniline Co., Schedler, A., and Vuilleumier, V. Jan. 8, 1917. Nitro compounds.-The continuous'nitration of organic liquids is carried out in a plant consisting of (1) a series of open measuring tanks containing the nitric acid, sulphuric acid, liquid to be nitrated, and water for dilution if necessary, the base areas of the tanks being proportional to the requisite volumes of the several liquids, (2) reaction pans of uniform size and shape arranged in a stepped series and provided with agitators, (3) a separator into which the product of reaction flows and separates into nitro body and waste acid which flow off from the top and bottom respectively to suitable receptacles. The two acids are run continuously from their measuring-tanks into the top reaction pan and are mixed therein; the mixture flows down to the next pan into which the liquid to be nitrated is also running from its measuring tank; the reacting mixture flows down through as many pans as are necessary to complete the reacton, and finally (after dilution with water if necessary) the product flows into the separator. The drawing shows an arrangement suitable for nitrating toluene to mononitrotoluene; the tanks R', R<2>, R' contain respectively sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and toluene; the two acids are run into the pan P' and after mixing run into pan P<2>, which also receives toluene from tank R<3>; the mixture then flows through pans P<3>, P<4>, to the separator T; the temperatures in the several pans are suitably adjusted by heating or cooling coils. A similar arrangement, using four measuring tanks and seven reaction pans, is described for nitrating a mixture of mono-, di-, and tri-nitrotoluene to trinitrotoluene. Details of quantities of reagents, temperatures, &c. in these two processes are given. The process and plant may also be applied to the continuous nitration of benzene to mono- or di-nitrobenzene, xylene to mono- or di-nitroxylene, chlorbenzene to mono- or di-nitrochlorbenzene, &c. Specification 16836/10, [Class 86, Mixing &c.], is referred to.
