Journal of the Institute of Petroleum, Bd. 29, No. 240, 1943, S. 361-63).
P. - 49,46 des Institute of Petroleum bestimmt.

Process for producing an impregnation mixture, mixture produced by the process and use of a mixture produced by the process for producing impregnated electrical cables Impregnating agents for electrical cables which contain impregnated fiber material, generally paper, as a dielectric, and fully impregnated, non-dripping cables are known.
Such impregnating agents contain microcrystalline petroleum wax as the or one of their main components and are referred to below as impregnating agents based on microcrystalline petroleum wax.
The statement that the paper-insulated cable is fully impregnated means that it contains as much of the impregnating agent as possible, the paper being impregnated and the spaces between the turns and the layers of the paper wrapping being filled with the impregnating agent, since there are cavities in the sheath surrounding the conductor are avoided as far as possible.
The cable is considered non-dripping if the volume of the dripped impregnation agent does not exceed 0 when the cable is held in a vertical position and is 9 m long or more open at both ends and has been heated to the maximum working temperature of the cable for 7 days. 1% of the volume occupied by the cable jacket.
In British Patent No. 581830 a fully impregnated, non-dripping cable is described and claimed which contains, as an impregnating agent, a solid mixture, which is plastic under normal conditions, consisting of microcrystalline petroleum wax with a melting point of at least 80 C and a mineral oil for cable impregnation or a plastic fierierungsmittel from the group of polyisobutylenes with an average molecular weight of 20,000 to 100,000 and rosin or a mixture of such an oil with one or both of the plasticizers,
the proportion of the microcrystalline wax in the mixture being at least 55 percent by weight. Furthermore, in Swiss patent no. 311944 a cable is ben described in which a microcrystalline petroleum wax is used, which has a melting point of. About 88 C, a needle penetration of about 5 at 25 C and about 35 at 70 C, or a Mixture of such a wax with microcrystalline petroleum waxes with higher penetration values at higher temperatures, which mixture has a melting point of 85-90 C and a needle penetration of about 5-6 at 25 C and 35-50 at 70 C,
wherein the proportion of microcrystalline wax in the impregnation mixture is at least 48 percent by weight when the wax has a penetration of 35 at 70 ° C. and not less than about 50 percent by weight when the stated wax mixture is used.
Microcrystalline petroleum wax is a microcrystalline product of waxy nature, which is also referred to as ceresin or earth wax (see. Journal of the Institute of Petroleum, Vol. 29, No. 240, 1943, pp 361-63).
Compared to the waxes of the paraffin wax group, these products have relatively small crystals and have a solidification point which is generally not below 71.degree. The needle penetration values mentioned above and those given below are determined using the Institute of Petroleum's method 1. P. - 49.46.
The mineral oils for cable impregnation mentioned in the patents mentioned and in the following are those which were generally known to cable manufacturers for the impregnation of paper-insulated electrical cables at the time of the application of said patent no. 581830. You are e.g.
B. in the collection of publications on insulating oils in the Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Part 1I, pp.3-64, Vol. 90, 1943 described critically. Their viscosity is between about 11000 Centistokes or more at 0 C and that of the so-called hollow-core cable oils with a viscosity of about 140 Centistokes at 0 C.
It has now been found that better impregnation mixtures for non-dripping cables can be obtained by combining microcrystalline petroleum wax with a synthetic hydrocarbon wax with low dielectric losses and a melting point in the range from 85 to 120 C. Under a wax with low dielectric Losses are understood as those whose loss factor at 100 C and 50 periods / sec. such as a field strength of 8 kV / cm is not more than 0.005.
The present invention relates to a method for producing an impregnating mixture containing microcrystalline petroleum wax, which is characterized in that a mixture containing microcrystalline petroleum wax and synthetic hydrocarbon wax melting between 85 and 120 ° C. with low dielectric loss is heated with homogenization.
The invention also relates to the use of a mixture obtained in this way with a content of said synthetic hydrocarbon wax of 1-40 percent by weight for the manufacture of fully impregnated, non-dripping, paper-insulated electrical cables.
A preferred example of a synthetic hydrocarbon wax of the type defined above is the commercial product Super Hard Wax No. 105. This wax has a melting point of 108 to 110 C and is a product of the Fischer-Tropsch process. Its mean molecular weight is around 600.
Another example of such a wax is the commercial product Alcowax. This is a polyethylene wax with a molecular weight of 2000-6000 and a melting point of about 110 ° C. and is manufactured by Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation in Buffalo, N.Y., USA.
The use of such a synthetic wax results in a mixture whose melting point is significantly higher than expected. Accordingly, by using the synthetic wax, a mixture based on microcrystalline petroleum wax can be obtained, which is suitable for the production of cables which can work at higher temperatures, and if desired a microcrystalline petroleum wax can be used, that or a part it melts below 80 ° C.
The synthetic wax can also be used to obtain impregnation mixtures that contain low-melting microcrystalline petroleum wax and have approximately the same melting point as those whose wax content consists entirely of microcrystalline wax with a melting point of 80 ° C. or higher.
The amount of the synthetic, low-loss hydrocarbon wax present in the impregnation mixture according to the invention can be about 1-40% of the weight of the total mixture. It depends on the amount and the melting point of the microcrystalline petroleum wax, the type of mineral oil for cable impregnation (if such is used) and of course the shape of the cable and the conditions under which it is to work. In general, the proportion of synthetic wax will increase as the melting point of the microcrystalline wax decreases.
As already mentioned, the preferred wax is the brand name Super Hard Wax # 105. Alcowax is preferably only used in combination with a larger proportion of the aforementioned synthetic wax, the Alcowax content of the impregnation mixture suitably not exceeding 15 percent by weight.
Depending on the nature, in particular the viscosity-temperature behavior of the oil and other mixture components (if present), the total wax content can vary between 20 and 100 percent by weight of the total mixture; if the total wax content is at the lower end of the specified range, that is between 20 and 2519 / o, the oil used should have a viscosity of less than 600 Redwood seconds at 60 C.
However, the total wax content is preferably between 25 and 60%, and the viscosity / temperature characteristic of the oil used is such that the mixture has a sufficiently low shear strength that the cable impregnated with it even at low temperatures without Risk of breakage of the fibrous dielectric can be laid.
It has been found that the increase in the melting point of impregnation mixtures based on microcrystalline petroleum wax through the use of a synthetic hydrocarbon wax with a melting point range of 85-120 C as partial replacement of the microcrystalline wax is greater than taking into account the extent of the replacement and the higher Melting point of the replacement material would be expected. The increase per set unit is most pronounced in the lower range and falls off with an increasing proportion of synthetic wax. This can be seen from the curves shown in the drawing.
In the coordinate system of the accompanying drawing, the numbers 0-10 plotted on the ordinate relate to curve C and mean ratio numbers that are obtained when one considers the increase in the melting point resulting from the addition of synthetic wax of melting point 108 C to microcrystalline petroleum wax of m.p. 80 C results (curve A), through the increase in melting point, which results from the addition of microcrystalline petroleum wax of m.p. 90.5a C to microcrystalline petroleum wax of m.p. 80 C (curve B), divided. The numbers on the abscissa (0-100) are percentages.
In the case of curve A, the percentage synthetic wax of m.p. 108 C and in the case of curve B the percentage of microcrystalline petroleum wax of melting point 90.5 C. Curve A shows how the melting point of a mixture containing a microcrystalline petroleum wax with a melting point of 80 C and a low-loss synthetic hydrocarbon wax with a melting point of 108 C (Super Hard Wax No. 105) varies with the content of this synthetic wax.
For comparison purposes, curve B shows the change in melting point of a mixture containing a microcrystalline petroleum wax with a melting point of 80 ° C. and a microcrystalline petroleum wax with a melting point of 90.5 ° C. in varying amounts. From curve B it can be seen that a mixture containing the same amounts of the microcrystalline petroleum waxes with a melting point of 80 ° C. and 90.5 ° C. melts at 86.7 ° C., which corresponds approximately to the average melting point of 85 ° C. of the two components.
It can be seen from curve A that a mixture containing the same amounts of microcrystalline petroleum wax with a melting point of 80 ° C. and low-loss synthetic hydrocarbon wax with a melting point of 108 ° C. has a melting point of 106 ° C., which is compared to the average melting point of the components of 94 ° C. Difference of 12 C. It can also be seen that when the proportion of synthetic wax reaches about 20%, the curves A and B run approximately parallel to one another.
From curve C, which is obtained by plotting the ratios of the increase in melting point of curves A and B against the percentage, it can be seen that the unexpected increase in melting point as a result of the addition of synthetic wax is most pronounced with additions of a few percent and drops rapidly up to an additional amount of around 20%,
where then the curve becomes flat. Therefore, if you want to achieve an increase in the melting point, especially at low cost, the amount of the low-loss synthetic hydrocarbon wax in the impregnation mixture will preferably not be higher than 20 percent by weight.
In addition to these main components, the microcrystalline petroleum wax and the mentioned syn thetic wax and the mineral oil for cables impregnation, the inventive impregnation mixture can still smaller proportions of one or more plasticizers such. B. polyisobutylene, colophony, polyethylene and butyl rubber.
The amount of plasticizer added depends on the desired properties of the impregnation mixture and the specific plasticizer or agents and is determined experimentally as required. It should be mentioned, for example, that you can add up to 1 percent by weight of the mixture of polyisobutylene with a molecular weight of about 80,000 to increase the viscosity of the mixture in the liquid phase, but you can add up to 5 percent by weight of polyethylene with a molecular weight of about 3000 or up to 5 weight add percent butyl rubber.
When using rosin as a plasticizer, this can be added in amounts of up to 30% of the mixture. If two or more plasticizers are used at the same time, the amount of one will depend on the amount of the other.
Small amounts, namely 0.01-1.0%. other additives such as antioxidants and metal binding agents (deactivators) can also be added if necessary.
An example of the former is ss-naphthylamine, which can be added to the mixture in amounts of up to 0.2% by weight, while N, N'-disalicylidene-ethylenediamine in amounts of up to 0.02% is an example of the latter .
The impregnation mixes can be made by simply adding the required amounts of microcrystalline petroleum wax and low-loss synthetic hydrocarbon wax and, which will mostly be the case, mineral oil for cable impregnation about 2-4. Heated to 120-130 ° C. for hours while stirring. This can be done under an inert atmosphere, e.g. B. nitrogen, take place, but not necessarily because the components are resistant to oxidation. If desired, polyethylene and or colophony can be used as a plasticizer without difficulty.
However, if you want to add polyisobutylene with a high molecular weight and 'or butyl rubber, this should be done in the form of a premix of one or both components in the microcrystalline petroleum wax or another suitable wax. Microcrystalline wax containing polyisobutylene is commercially available under the name Mycroply 30.
The following examples describe mixtures based on microcrystalline petroleum wax, as can be found in the manufacture of paper-insulated electrical cables that do not drip off.
