Description
High-speed drive device of a rotary member
The present invention relates to a device for driving at high speed by means of a fluid jet, a rotary member, in particular the axis of a dental tool which must be driven at a high speed of rotation. for example of the order of magnitude of 200,000 to 300,000 revolutions per minute.
Dental appliances have already been designed along this line comprising a small turbine driven by a jet of compressed air, the axis of which can be coupled to the axis of a handpiece or to the tail of a milling cutter, grinding wheel, or other rotary tool, the rotor of this turbine or its axis being supported by bearings or ball bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a simplified construction of a device of this type which can also be used in the textile industry. To this end, it is characterized according to the invention in that it comprises at least one ball or roller bearing, the inner rolling ring of which is arranged to couple with the axis of the rotary member to be driven and a nozzle projecting the jet of fluid so as to drive all the balls or rollers in rotation, which in turn drive the inner rolling ring at a speed multiple of that of this assembly.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example and schematically, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view, and
fig. 2 an axial section.
The drive device shown comprises a handle 1 in the body of which is formed a cylindrical bore serving as a housing for a ball bearing composed of an outer ring 2, an inner ring 6, and a series of balls. 7 kept at a distance from each other by a cage 5. The inner ring 6 is secured, by means not shown, to a barrel 4 provided with a coupling plate 8 intended to cooperate with a corresponding plate formed in the 'free end of the cylindrical shank of a milling cutter 10. An elastic washer 11 engaging in an annular groove in the shank of the milling cutter makes it possible to lock the latter in the coupled position. A cover 9 fitted into the housing of the head 1 protects the upper part of the bearing.
A nozzle 3, making a slight angle with a side face and directed against the balls or the retaining cage 5, projects a jet of compressed air on them.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When the pressurized air emerges from the nozzle 3, it directly strikes the planetary moving body formed by the balls 7, and the retaining cage 5 and these parts of the bearing play the role of blades of a turbine. This mobile rotates at high speed in the direction of arrow a (for a position of the nozzle 3 as shown in FIG. 1). The rotation of this planetary moving body drives the inner ring 6 integral with the drive barrel 4 in the same direction, along arrow b, but at a speed which is at least equal to twice that of said moving body. The speed of the tool 10 is thus increased relative to that provided by a normal turbine fitted with blades. The speed of the tool can reach considerable values.
The air projected by the nozzle 3 can escape through openings, not shown, located on the face of the bearing opposite to that where the nozzle is located. It is optionally possible to use all or part of this air for cooling the strawberry.
The drive device is shown integral with a dental handpiece head, but could be used to drive any rotary member at high speed. Instead of air one could use a fluid such as water or oil or an inert gas.
