Process for the preparation of azo dyes It has been found that new, valuable azo dyes are obtained by using azo components of the formula
EMI0001.0007
wherein R is an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical, with diazo or tetrazo compounds which contain at least one sulfonic acid,
Containing carboxylic acid or oxy group, couples and, if appropriate, the azo dyes obtained in substance or on a non-textile substrate with metal-releasing agents after-treated.
The coupling can be carried out once or twice, in which case, depending on the type of diazo or tetrazo compounds, mono-, dis- or polyazo dyes are obtained.
The new azo dyes are suitable, depending on their structure, for dyeing fibers made from natural cellulose or polyamides and animal materials such as wool or leather. They can be treated with metal-releasing agents, for example chromium, copper, cobalt, manganese, nickel or iron compounds, as a result of which the fastness properties of the underlying dyes can be significantly improved.
The new dyes can advantageously be applied directly to wool or leather in the form of their metal complex compounds, dyeings being obtained, particularly on leather, which are characterized by good general fastness properties, in particular by very good light and wet fastness properties.
Examples of azo components which can be used in the process according to the invention include the following: 2,4-Dioxy-phenyl methyl ketone 2,4-Dioxy-phenyl-ethyl ketone 2,4-Dioxy-phenyl-propyl ketone 2, 4-Dioxy-phenyl-benzyl ketone 2,4-Dioxy-phenyl-cyclohexyl ketone 2,4-Dioxy-phenyl-co-phenoxymethyl-ketone 2,4-Dioxy-phenyl-naphthyl- (1) -ketone 2,4-Dioxy- benzophenone 2,4-Dioxy-4'-chlorobenzophenone 2,4-Dioxy-4'-methyl-benzophenone 2,
4-Dioxy-3'-methoxy-benzophenone 2,4-Dioxy-2 ', 4'-dichloro-benzophenone The azo components can be prepared by known methods, for example by reacting carboxylic acid chlorides or anhydrides with 1,3- Dioxy-benzene under the conditions of the Friedel-Crafts reaction or by condensation of nitriles with 1,3-dioxy-benzene in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride and hydrogen chloride.
In some cases it is also useful to condense the free carboxylic acids with 1,3-dioxybenzene under the action of boron fluoride.
As diazo components, amino, diamino, aminoazo or diaminoazo compounds of the benzene or naphthalene series can advantageously be used in the present process, which are substituted in the o-position to the diazotizable amino group by an oxy, alkoxy or carboxylic acid group or a halogen atom or groups capable of forming metal complexes in the molecule, e.g.
B. the salicylic acid or o, o'-dioxy-azo groups contain. Suitable compounds of this type are, for example, the diazo compounds from o-aminophenolsulfonic acids or carboxylic acids, o-aminonaphtholsulfonic acids, aminobenzenesulfocarboxylic acids, o-aminophenolsulfocarboxylic acids, tetrazo compounds from diaminodiphenylsulfonic acids and diazoazo compounds,
which are obtained, for example, from 1 mole of a diazotized o-aminophenolsulfonic acid and 1 mole of an aminaphthol mono- or disulfonic acid coupling in the o-position to the oxy group.
In the preparation of dyes which are obtained by coupling 1 mol of an azo component with 2 mol of a diazo component, those compounds that do not contain any groups capable of forming metal complexes can also be used as the second diazo component instead of the above-mentioned compounds for example aminobenzene or aminonaphthalene sulfonic acids, nitraniline sulfonic acids and the like. a.
Example 1 31.8 parts by weight of 1-amino-2-oxy-3-nitro-benzene-5-sulfonic acid (73.6%) are suspended in 200 parts by weight of water and diazotized at 18 with 20 parts by volume of 5N sodium nitrite solution in the course of about 1 hour. The diazo solution is left in a solution of 15.2 parts by weight of 2,
4-Dioxy-phenyl methyl ketone and 40 parts by volume of 5N sodium hydroxide solution in 200 parts by weight of water. After the coupling has ended, it is acidified with 50 parts by volume of 5N sulfuric acid, and the dye is completely salted out with common salt, filtered off with suction and dried.
The dye thus obtained of the formula
EMI0002.0048
is a reddish-brown powder that is easily soluble in water that dyes wool in full reddish blue tones, which change into reddish garnet tones when re-coppering and into garnet tones with good light, sweat, milled and decade fastness when re-chroming.
To convert the dye into the chromium complex compound, the moist presscake of the dye is mixed with 200 parts by volume of water, mixed with a solution of 25 parts by weight of chromium acetate with a content of 30.05% Cr 2 O 3 in 100 parts by volume of water and adjusted to 90 for a few hours -95 heated.
After the chromation is complete, the chromium-containing dye is salted out with common salt, filtered off with suction and dried. It is a dark brown powder that dissolves very easily in water and dyes leather in red-violet shades with very good wet fastness properties and very good light fastness.
To convert it into the cobalt complex compound, the moist presscake of the dye is stirred in 200 parts by volume of water, and a solution of 28.2 parts by weight of cobalt sulfate of the formula COS04 * 7H20 and 27 parts by weight of crystallized sodium acetate in 200 parts by weight of water are added and heated to 90-95 for a few hours.
The cobalt-containing dye precipitated after the end of the metallization with common salt is a dark brown powder which is readily soluble in water after drying and which dyes the leather in red-violet shades of very good wet fastness and good light fastness.
The table below describes other metal-containing dyes of similar good fastness properties, in which 2,4-dioxyphenyl methyl ketone is also used as the azo component and which can be obtained in a manner similar to that given in the previous example.

The diazo solution is then mixed with a solution of 21.4 parts by weight of 2,
4-Dioxy-benzophenone combined in 200 parts by volume of water and 40 parts by volume of 5N sodium hydroxide solution. After the coupling is complete, it is acidified with 40 parts by volume of 5N sulfuric acid, the dye is completely salted out with sodium chloride, filtered off with suction and dried. It is a water-soluble, dark brown powder that dyes wool in red-brown shades which, when chromium-plating, change to garnet-brown shades of very good lightfastness and very good fastness to washing, perspiration, milled and deca.
The new dye also dyes polyamide fibers in brown-orange tones.
The table below describes other dyes of similar good fastness properties in which 2,4-dioxy-phenyl-alkyl and aryl ketones are used as azo components and which can be obtained in a manner similar to that given in the previous example.

2'-disulfonic acid To convert into the chromium complex compound, the moist presscake of the dye described in Example 2 is mixed with 200 parts by volume of water and mixed with an acetic acid solution of 18.5 parts by weight of chromium trifluoride (60%) in 200 parts by volume of water heated to 90-95 for about 6 hours.
The chromium-containing dye deposited by adding sodium chloride is a dark brown powder that is easily soluble in water and colors the leather in brownish red bordeaux shades of very good lightfastness and very good wet fastness properties. The cobalt complex compound of the dye dyes leather in red Bordeaux shades with very good wet fastness properties.
Example 3 26.3 parts by weight of 1-amino-2-oxy-5-chloro-benzene-3-sulfonic acid are dissolved in 200 parts by weight of water with 20 parts by volume of 5N sodium hydroxide solution.
After the addition of 20 parts by volume of 5N sodium nitrite solution is diazotized at 5 by adding 40 parts by volume of 5N hydrochloric acid. The diazo solution is then combined with a solution of 22.8 parts by weight of 2,4-dioxy-4'-methylbenzophenone and 40 parts by volume of 5N sodium hydroxide solution in 200 parts by weight of water. The dyestuff which has precipitated out after coupling with sulfuric acid and common salt is dried as a dark brown powder.
The conversion into the chromium complex compound can be carried out according to the procedures described in Examples 1 and 2. The dye thus obtained is a water-soluble, dark brown powder which dyes leather in muted Bordeaux shades of good light fastness and good wet fastness properties. On wool, the dye gives bluish garnet tones with very good wash, milled and perspiration fastness properties. Polyamide fibers can be dyed in corinth-violet shades with good washing and chlorine fastness.
In comparison with natural cellulose, the dye from acid bath surprisingly shows very good drawability, while regenerated cellulose is not colored. The corinth-violet coloring obtained on natural cellulose has good lightfastness.
The dyes mentioned below also produce dyeings with similar good fastness properties:

ID = "0007.0002"> chromium complex compound, the moist presscake of the dye described in Example 4 is mixed with 200 parts by weight of water and weakly acidified with acetic acid. After adding a solution of 100 parts by weight of chrome alum (KCr (S04) 2. 12H20) in 300 parts by volume of 2N sodium acetate solution, the mixture is heated to 90-95 until the chromation is complete.
The chromium-containing dye is salted out with common salt, sucked off and dried. The dye thus obtained is a brown powder which is readily soluble in water and which dyes leather in reddish-light brown shades with good fastness properties. If, in the above example, the appropriate amount of a copper, nickel or cobalt salt is used instead of chrome alum, dyes are obtained which dye leather in light brown shades with similarly good fastness properties.
The following compilation contains further dyes which can be obtained according to the invention and which have similarly good fastness properties, which can be produced from 1 mol of an azo component and 2 mol of a diazo component and by subsequent chromating, and their color shades on leather.
