Method for cleaning melamine Melamine is made by heating suitable connec tions, such. B. of dicyandiamide or urea, often produced in the presence of ammonia. The raw melamine obtained in this way contains impurities which interfere with its reaction with formaldehyde and which consist partly of compounds that are insoluble in water and aqueous alkali solutions, partly of compounds that are difficult to dissolve in water, but easily soluble in aqueous alkalis.
The first are mostly organic in nature, e.g. B. Melamine de-amination products such as melam. Melem and Melon. In addition, metal oxides, mainly iron oxide, are found among the impurities.
Those that are difficult to dissolve in water and easily soluble in alkali are mainly cyanuric acid, ammelide and ammeline, i.e. triazine derivatives that contain oxy groups, react slightly acidic and can form mixed crystals and addition compounds with one another or with melamine. More than 0,
1% of the above-mentioned oxy compounds disrupt the condensation reaction of melamine with formaldehyde. Of the inorganic impurities, iron is particularly annoying, as it discolors the condensation products.
Raw melamine has hitherto been purified by recrystallization in technology. This is cumbersome because 30 times the amount of water is required to dissolve the melamine, which has to be heated up. You can get by with smaller amounts of water, but then a complicated pressure apparatus is required. The aminotriazines containing oxy groups, hereinafter referred to as oxytriazines, are kept in solution in the heat by adding dilute alkalis, while the melamine crystallizes out.
The literature warns against exceeding pH 13 with this cleaning process, since otherwise up to 35% of the melamine will be decomposed by hydrolysis. This is followed by a constant pressure filtration at 5 to 20 atmospheres. To clean the pressure filter, the pressure must be released and the filter opened.
According to another method, large melamine crystals, such as can arise during pressure crystallization, are stirred for one hour with dilute alkalis at pH 12-13 and then washed alkali-free, but the last 1,511 / o oxytriazines cannot be removed.
It has now been found that raw melamine can be cleaned in a simple and economical manner if it is treated with a pl, not below 13 with excess alkali metal hydroxide solution, calculated on the content of alkali-soluble substances, if necessary with at least at least until it is completely free from oxytriazines Washes 0.1N alkali hydroxide solution and the melamine is then separated off and washed alkali-free.
The melamine, which is free of oxytriazines, may still contain iron, which does not interfere with further processing. The iron is now in the form of compounds that have become filterable through the alkali treatment, while the iron previously probably bound to the oxy groups in the oxytriazine and cannot be separated in this form.
In particular, the raw melamine produced from urea can already be freed from a large part of the iron before the alkali treatment by separating the iron compounds which accumulate on the surface of the melamine-water mixture.
The amount of alkali metal hydroxide solution to be used can be calculated by determining the amount of alkali-soluble substances (oxytriazine or oxyaminotriazines) after extraction of a sample with alkali either by weight analysis by precipitation with acid, washing and drying or by mass analysis by back titration with sulfuric acid and phenolphthalein as an indicator , whereby the acid consumption is measured from the cloud point to the change in the indicator.
The cloud point is the first permanent cloudiness at pIi cv 11.5 that occurs as soon as the excess alkali has been neutralized.
The mass analytical method leads to a sufficiently precise value even if it is not known whether triazine derivatives with 1, 2 or 3 oxy groups are present, since only one hydroxyl group has acidic properties and is measured by mass analysis.
The molecular weights of the individual oxytriazines cyanuric acid C ', N3 (OH) 3 = 129 ammelide C3N3NH2 (OH) 2 = 128 ammeline C.N3 (NH2) 2OH = 127 differ so little that when calculating with a molecular weight of 128 you only have one theoretical error of 0.8n / o. In practice, the error is even smaller, since the alkali-soluble impurities contain all three compounds at the same time.
If the melamine is then dissolved in formaldehyde solution, the insoluble organic impurities and the heavy metal compounds can easily be filtered off.
Cleaning with an alkali hydroxide solution is preferably carried out at room temperature, but can also be carried out at an elevated temperature.
It is necessary that the pH is at least 13, since the first proportions of oxytriazines begin to precipitate between pFI 12.5 and 13. The melamine is not measurably attacked by concentrated alkaline solutions in the cold for about an hour, while the oxytriazines are completely dissolved in a few minutes by an excess of strong alkali.
However, the solubility and rate of dissolution of the oxytriazines do not depend solely on the alkali concentration, but are, as Table 1 shows, very strongly influenced by the oxytriazine / alkali ratio. With a ratio of 1.4 to 2.0 moles of alkali metal hydroxide to 1 mole of oxytriazine, poor sizes pass through a strongly pronounced maximum, which falls steeply towards smaller values of this ratio and somewhat more slowly towards larger values. Table 1 also shows that the solubility in potassium hydroxide solution is much greater than that in sodium hydroxide solution.
You can precipitate the oxytriazine from its solution in potassium hydroxide solution by adding sodium hydroxide solution.

<tb> 16.7 <SEP> 1.2 <SEP> - Melamine slurries in sodium hydroxide solution are also much more difficult to filter than those in potassium hydroxide solution.
To increase the effect, it is advantageous to use the calculated amount of alkali hydroxide as a concentrated, e.g. B. 10n lye, add to the raw melamine and then add enough water that the mixture can be stirred.
Stirring the slurry promotes the dissolution of the oxytriazines since, in contrast to melamine, it crystallizes poorly and collects in the form of particles less than 0.001 mm on the surface of the better formed melamine crystals.
You can then add more water to spin it off.
If the melamine still contains residues of oxytriazine, these can be removed by washing with at least 0.1N alkali solution. The melamine is then washed thoroughly with water. The degree of purity depends on how completely you wash out. If the melamine is completely free of alkali, the oxytriazines in it can no longer be detected analytically, the detection limit being 0.0010 / a.
So you can make a melamine containing less than 0.1 / o of oxytriazines ago without the use of pressure and heat with only 2 to 4 times the amount of the raw product of water in about 10 minutes. The losses in the mother liquor are only 1.0 to 1.6% compared to 4 to 16% during recrystallization.

<I> Example 2 </I> 10 kg of raw melamine, which contains 18.7% alkali-soluble compounds, 0.3% iron and 3.5% insoluble substances, are mixed with 2.5 liters of 10N potassium hydroxide solution. 6 liters of water are then added and the mixture is stirred for 5 minutes.
The slurry is then spun off and washed five times with 5 liters of water each time. The residue contains 98.5% of the melamine used and 0.0091 / o alkali-soluble substances, based on melamine. The pH value is> 13.
<I> Example 3 </I> 10 kg of melamine, which contains 6.3% alkali-soluble compounds (4.9 mol), 2.5% insoluble substances and 0.4% iron, are mixed with 850 cm33 of 10N potassium hydroxide solution (8.5 mol) and 8 liters of water for 5 minutes.
It is spun off and washed twice with 4 liters of water each time, twice with 4 liters of 0.80 / a potassium hydroxide solution each and three more times with 4 liters of water each time. There are no more alkali-soluble substances in the residue, and the iron still contained in it has become completely insoluble in formaldehyde solution. The melamine yield is 98.5%.
