Method of shaping a hollow object, and apparatus for its implementation The present patent comprises a method of shaping a hollow object, for example to obtain a hollow turbine engine blade by pressing between dies on the opposite sides. of a hollow workpiece having at least one iron end, pushing these sides towards one another.
This method is characterized according to the invention in that, during the pushing towards each other of the opposite sides of the hollow work piece, a section of this piece extending to the iron end of the latter is not in contact with these dies, and then this part being always kept clamped between the dies, a pressure is generated inside the part such that the side walls at least of said section are deformed outwards beyond the elastic limit.
The patent also includes an apparatus for carrying out this method.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention and also illustrates, by way of example, an embodiment of the method according to the invention implemented by means of this embodiment of the device.
Fig. 1 is a section through a hollow workpiece intended to be shaped in said embodiment of the apparatus so as to form a hollow gas turbine blade, this part being filled with a plastic material.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view with cutaway, on a smaller scale, of this embodiment of the apparatus. The fi-. 3 is a partial section of part of the apparatus of FIG. 2 showing the closed dies on the workpiece.
Fig. 4 is a partial section similar to FIG. 3 illustrating the application of pressure to the plastic material filling the workpiece.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the workpiece of FIG. 1 after its shaping and after the plastic material has been removed.
The hollow metal work piece 11 'shown in FIG. 1 is preferably obtained by extrusion. It is of circular section and has a cylindrical central housing filled with plastic material 23. The wall 18 of the workpiece is thin, but its thickness gradually increases from its closed lower end to its upper end. The lower end of the work piece is closed by a relatively thick frustoconical part 19. Around its upper end, the work piece has a collar 20, the thickness of which is greater than that of the walls. Material 23 is substantially incompressible, having a relatively low melting point.
This material could be, for example, Wood's metal, lead, an alloy of lead and bismuth and even a silicate or rubber-like plastic. The material 23 could be shaped beforehand so as to form a core then inserted into the cavity of the workpiece 11 '.
The apparatus shown in FIG. 2, used to shape the workpiece 11 ', comprises a support block 24, in which is formed a prismatic housing 25, having opposite inclined walls 26 and opposite vertical walls 27. Vertical grooves 28 are formed. in the walls 27. In the housing 25 is disposed a casing 29, with thick walls comprising a bottom 30, a top 31 and opposite vertical side walls 32. These side walls 32 are provided with ribs 33, sliding in the grooves 28 , so as to prevent transverse movements of the casing while allowing it to be moved in a vertical direction in the housing 25.
The casing forms a housing open at its ends adjacent to the inclined walls 26 of the block 24 and enclosing sliding dies 34 each having a face 35 in engagement with one of the inclined walls 26 and a die face 36, in which is formed a cavity 37; the complementary cavities 37 define the aerodynamic shape of the blade to be conformed to by firing the workpiece 11 'when the faces 36 of the dies are in contact, that is to say that they define between the dies a space of the same size and of the same shape as the aero dynamic part of the workpiece as it appears after conformation as shown in fig. 5.
A conical hole 38 is made in the center of the bottom 30 of the casing 29 and a hole 39 is formed in the top 31 to serve as a guide for a cylindrical punch 40. The holes 38 and 39 are coaxial with the blade shape. aerodynamic, as defined by the cavity 37. A control piston 41, coaxial with the punch 40, is intended to bear on the top 31 of the casing 29. The work piece 11 'is inserted into the hole 39 so that the frustoconical end 19 of the workpiece is placed in the frustoconical hole 38. The punch 40 and the piston 41 are then lowered, the punch 40 entering the hole 39 and thus being guided to bear on the upper end of the work piece 11 ', the interior of which is filled with the plastic 23.
The piston 41 presses on the top 31 of the casing 29 and drives it into the housing 25; as a result of the cooperation of the inclined walls 26 and 35 with the dies, the lowering of the casing 29 causes these dies 34 to move towards one another and causes them to close again on the workpiece 11 '. The ribs 33 sliding in the grooves 28 ensure precise centering of the dies relative to the workpiece. Continuous application of the punch 41 deforms the workpiece 11 'under the lateral pressure of the dies 34.
The opposite sides of the part 11 'are thus pushed towards each other until this part takes in its middle part a shape of aerodynamic section when the die faces 36 approach each other, as shown in section on the left. fig. 3. At the same time, the plastic 23 is expelled at a rate controlled by the pressure exerted by the punch 40, this pressure being just sufficient to prevent uneven settling of the thin wall 18 of the workpiece 11 'when. it is compressed laterally.
At their upper ends, the cavities 37 comprise parts 37a which receive the collar 20, the latter receiving by the shaping operation the shape shown in FIG. 5. At their lower ends, the cavities form housings 37b in which a section 42 of the workpiece 11 'extending to its closed end remains withdrawn from the action of the dies, the rest of the parts. kings 18 being driven back by closing the dies. The fact that the section 42 of the part 11 'is subject to the upsetting action of the dies avoids excessive compression and, as a result, corrugation or wrinkling of the closed lower end of the workpiece. prevented.
Once the dies are closed, the punch 40 (see fig. 4) is forcibly lowered onto the material 23 expelled from the part 11 'and pushes it back into the cavity of the workpiece 11', the latter still being held. clamped between the dies 34 by the continued pressure of the piston 41. The wall of the workpiece 11 'is thus brought to closely match the shape of the cavities 37 of the dies, the side wall of the section 42 being deformed outwards at the beyond the elastic limit and hugging the walls of the housings 37b, and the material of the walls 18 is forced back into the parts of the cavities 37 which define the leading edge and the trailing edge of the blade.
Thus, the material of the workpiece is cold worked producing beneficial effects on its physical properties, in addition to ensuring its tight adaptation to the desired shape. In accordance with usual practice, the dimensions of the casing 18 of the workpiece 11 'and the recesses 37a are chosen empirically in order to ensure that the material of the workpiece is stretched beyond its elastic limit, but not beyond its point of tearing. The stretching tolerance is of the order of 5 0 / o to 10 0 / o both in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction; excessive longitudinal stretching of the workpiece is naturally prevented by the base 30.
After removal of the dies, the workpiece 11 'is heated to remove the filler 23 and it then has the appearance shown in FIG. 5. To finish this piece of work to make a blade, the section 42 is removed and the collar 20 is machined on the outside to form the root of the finished blade.
In the apparatus shown, the dies 34, the cavities 37 of which are machined with great precision conforming them to the contour of the finished blade, are not called upon to operate under hammer blows or at high temperatures; therefore, it is not necessary to replace them often.
A method and apparatus such as those described could also be used to shape a hollow workpiece so as to obtain, for example, a tube for a door latch, with a hollow part to enclose the plunger of the latch, spring, etc., and with a flange for installation on the door. It would thus be possible to shape a hollow object in the manner described to obtain a hollow case, with an opening surrounded by a flange and a swollen part at any location below the flange.
