EMI1.1
point d'ébullition : 72 C sous 0,25 mm ;
densité d = 0,9647 ;
point d'ébullition : 60-610C sous 0. 05 mmHg ;
d'8, = 0, ;
4
nD = 1,502.
Point d'ébullition : 71-72 C sous 0,25 mmHg ; d24 = 0, ;
nD = 1,4988.
point d'ébullition : 85oC sous 0,1 mmHg ;
d244 = ;
nD = ;

Point d'ébullition : 72-730C sous 0,12 mmHg ; d4 5 = 0, ;
nid = 1,498.
Rendement : 91 /o.

Process for the preparation of new isomeric tertiary alcohols
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new isomeric unsaturated tertiary alcohols, namely trimethyl-1, 1, 6-hydroxy6-octahydro-1, 2,3,5,6,7,8,9-naphthalene , trimethyl-1, 1, 6-hydroxy-6-octahydro-1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8-naphthalene and trimethyl-1, 1, 6-hydroxy-6-octahydro-1 , 2,3,4,6, 7,8,9-naphthalene. The first two of these isomers exhibit a novel and interesting odor and are useful in the perfume industry.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that dihydro-y-ionone or a mixture of this ionone with at least one of its α-isomeric dihydroionones is subjected and, to cyclization, in the presence of a cyclizing agent.
The process can be represented by the following equations:
EMI1.1
When subjecting dihydro-y-ionone
(formula I) on cyclization using a cyclizing agent, such as a proton generating agent, a bicyclic carbonium ion is formed (formula II).
This ion again loses a proton and gives, besides certain quantities of non-alcoholic secondary products, a mixture of isomeric, bicyclic, tertiary, unsaturated alcohols (formulas III, IV and V).
These alcohols can be isolated from the crude reaction mixture, for example, by treatment with triethyl borate or phthalic anhydride. Of them
of these three isomeric alcohols are present in two stereoisomeric forms, according to their two asymmetric carbon atoms.
The most important of these alcohols is that of formula III, ie trimethyl-1,1,6-hydroxy6-octahydro-1, 2,3,5,6,7,8,9-naphthalene; it can also be designated under the name of trimethyl-2,2,8-hydroxy-8-bi-cyclo (0,4,4) -decene-5. The second in importance of these alcohols is that of formula IV, that is to say trimethyl-1, 1, 6-hydroxy6-octahydro-1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8-naphthalene .
These two alcohols of formulas III and IV have an original and interesting odor and are new compounds which can be used in the perfume industry.
The alcohol of formula V, i.e. trimethyl-
1, 1, 6-hydroxy-6-octahydro-1, 2,3,4,6,7,8,9-naphthalene, is formed only in a very small amount during the cyclization indicated above. Its odor is very weak, so that its presence, either in the mixture of the two other alcohols of formulas III and IV, or in one or the other of these alcohols, does not harm the odor of these alcohols. products.
This alcohol of formula V gives two allophanables melting respectively at 171C C and 161 C (the latter is likely impure).
The direct product of the cyclization indicated above is a mixture of the three isomers of formulas III, IV and V. This new product is charac terized by the following constants:
boiling point :
66-670 C under 0.07 mm Hg pressure
76-800 C under 0.25 rnm Hg pressure
70-720 C under 0.1 mm Hg pressure,
180
density at 4 = 0.964
refractive index nt9.8 = 1.498
3,5-dinitro-benzoate: melting point 82-830 C.
This product gives allophanates melting respectively at 184 C, 1830C, 172 C and 1540C and an epoxide (CInH22Os) melting at 55-560 C.
In some cases, the direct product of cyclization contains only the two isomeric alcohols of formulas III and IV only; this last mixture of isomers is just as interesting as the first.
If, in the cyolization indicated above, a mixture of the
y, α and 3 dihydroionones, instead of the pure y-isomer, cyclization affects almost only the y-isomer.
This results in a mixture of dihydro-a-ionones and, where appropriate, dihydro-p-ionones with trimethyl-1, 1, 6-hydroxy-6-octahydro-
1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9-naphthalene, trimethyl-1, 1, 6-hy droxy-6-octahydro-1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8- naphthalene and a small amount of trimethylzl, 1,6-hydroxy-6-octahydro-1, 2,3,4,6,7,8,9-naphthalene; the alcohols of formulas III and IV can easily be isolated from this mixture by boration and fractional distillation.
Trimethyl-1, 1,6-hydroxy-6-octahydro-1,2,3,5,
6,7,8,9-naphthalene (formula III) gives off a strong fragrance with a new odor; it presents the following physical constants:
boiling point: 72 C at 0.25 mm;
density d = 0.9647;
refractive index n20 =; it gives allophanates melting at 183 "C and, respectively, at 1840 C.
Trimethyl-1, 1,6-hydroxy-6-octahydro-1,2,3,4,
5,6,7.8-Naphthalene (formula IV) gives a single allophanate melting at 153-154 C and exhibits the following physical constants:
boiling point: 60-610C at 0.05mmHg;
of 8, = 0,;
4
nD = 1.502.
New compositions of matter having an attractive odor can be prepared with one or both of the above isomers of formulas III and IV.
The cyclization, in an isocyclic ring, of a monocyclic aliphatic compound having a keto group and an s-mi-cyclic double bond has heretofore never been described. Until now, we could not imagine that such cyclization was possible either. On the one hand, the above-indicated cyclization seemed to be almost impracticable, because the semi-cyclic double bond of the dihydro-y-ionone has a strong tendency to move in the ring, when one is in the presence of protons or hydroxyl groups.
On the other hand, it was very unlikely that in the presence of protons the resulting tertiary hydroxyl group would be sufficiently stable to avoid the formation of a double bond. However, despite these circumstances, the cyclization indicated above can be carried out by stirring dihydro-y-ionone with one or more strong acids diluted with water, or by heating the dihydro-γ-ionone with a substance. low proton producer such as weak organic acids diluted with water, such as phthalic acid, salicylic acid, tartaric acid, carbolic acid, benzoic acid, citric acid and l oxalic acid.
Under these conditions, only a small amount of the tertiary alcohol loses its hydroxyl group and gives a doubly unsaturated hydrocarbon.
Electrophilic substances such as BF3 allow cyclization of dihydroyionone as well as proton-producing substances.
The process which is the subject of the present invention is particularly advantageous when it is applied to a mixture of α, y and 0 dihydroionones. It then allows cyclization of the isomer alone, leaving the other isomers practically unchanged, such that these The latter can either be used for the preparation of said mixture of isomeric dihydroionones [see Swiss Patent No. 335516], or remain mixed with the new alcohol, giving a composition of matter with a pleasant odor.
The process which is the subject of the present invention can also be carried out using dihydro-yionone in the nascent state, that is to say with a compound releasing this ionone in the reaction medium for cyclization, such as for example with acetal, semicarbazone or another carbonyl derivative of this ionone. The only precaution that should be taken when using these compounds, instead of the ketone, is that they should readily cleave into the ketone under the reaction conditions stated above. The cleavage of semicarbazone from natural dihydro-y-ionone in the presence of phthalic acid has already been described by Ruzicka and his colleagues in Helvetica Chimica Acte, vol.
XXXI, page 830. However, contrary to what is the case in the process which is the subject of the present invention, these scientists have not been able to observe any cyclization of the dihydro-Y-ionone recovered. However, it is certain that a hot solution of phthalic acid always leads to rapid cyclization of the dihydro-y-ionone, as numerous experiments have proved.
The new products obtained by the process which is the subject of the invention are not only very interesting raw materials for the perfume industry, but they are also starting materials for syntheses; they can be used, either in the crude state or purified.
The following examples show how the process which is the subject of the invention can be carried out in practice.
Example 1:
Is stirred for 48 hours and at about 25o C, 10 g of pure synthetic dihydro-y-ionone (in a
= 0.9149; nt9 = 1.4771) with a solution of 20 g of concentrated sulfuric acid in 100 ml of water.
The reaction product is extracted with ether, then washed with carbonate and water. The ethereal solution is dried and the solvent is removed by distillation. The remaining product is slowly heated with 10 g of B (OCH.;) 3 for 1 hour. The ethyl alcohol formed is removed by distillation at ordinary pressure with the excess of ethyl borate. The unreacted part of the reaction product is then distilled at 0.01 mm Hg pressure. The temperature of the oil bath should not exceed 140 C. Molecular distillation increases the yield. The distillation residue is subjected for one hour to saponification with 70 ml of a 10 ouzo solution of KOH in methanol and in the presence of 10 ml of benzene.
The solvents are removed by distillation and the residue is extracted with benzene. Finally, the latter is removed by distillation and the remaining product is rectified.
Boiling point: 71-72 C at 0.25 mmHg; d24 = 0,;
nD = 1.4988.
9.5 g of product are obtained. The smell of this new product is different from that of natural ambergris; however, this product appears to be very close to one of the components of ambergris because of its very strong smell of humus and musty.
Example 2:
Is stirred for 48 hours, at a temperature of about 200 to 300 C and in 800 ml of a 20 ouzo solution of sulfuric acid, 77.8 g of a mixture of γ and α dihydroionones, prepared as indicated in the aforementioned patent No. 335516 and having practically the following physical constants:
boiling point: 85oC at 0.1mmHg;
d244 =;
nD =;
carbonyl content: 95 / o.
The reaction product is extracted with ether or benzene. Approximately 76 g of a product assaying 38% of ketones are obtained (determination by oximation). Therefore, the treatment indicated above caused the cyclization of 57% of the starting ketones (95-38 "/ 0). As the a and p dihydroionones were found to be refractory to cyclization, under the above treatment conditions. Above indicated, the amount of dihydroionone y in the starting material was therefore at least 44.5 g (57% of 77.8 g).
74 g of the cyclized product are heated with 80 g of triethyl borate. The temperature is first of all maintained at 128 C. It is then gradually raised to 150 C. At the same time, the pressure is lowered from 720 to 15 mmHg and finally to 0.1 mmHg. After removal of the ethanol by distillation, 41 g of product are distilled passing between 1280 and 100 ° C. under a pressure varying from 18 mmHg to 0.1 mmHg.
These 41 g contain approximately 61/0 of ketone, determined by oximation. 33 g do not distill. The latter are saponified using 140 ml of a solution of 15 g of KOH in methanol and in the presence of 10 ml of benzene. The neutral fraction is extracted with ether, washed with water and distilled.
28.6 g distilled at 64-680C under 0.1 mmHg; d5 = 0.9618, n23 = 1.4985. The cyclization yield is 64 "/ o, calculated with respect to the dihydroyionone. This yield can be increased by distilling more rapidly or at a lower temperature (for example by continuous molecular distillation) the product which is not has not reacted with the boric ester, or by subjecting this product to extraction, the yield is then 95%.
Sulfuric acid can advantageously be replaced, as proton-producing substance, by a cation exchange resin such as those described by Swistak, Mastagli and Zafiriadis (Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences, Paris, vol. 236 , page 2325 (1953)). Acids other than sulfuric acid can also cause cyclization of the dihydro-; -ionone. The following table gives a list of some acids with their cycling power at different concentrations and temperatures. The last column of this table indicates the yield of tertiary alcohols of formulas III, IV and V.

Under the reaction conditions indicated above, the reaction product is not stable and undergoes dehydration and resinification. It is, therefore, essential to continue the reaction as long as the yield increases and to stop it as soon as the yield drops.
Example 3:
5.75 g of dihydro-y-ionone, dissolved in 30 ml of anhydrous benzene, are treated with a stream of 0.6 g of BF3. Initially, the temperature is +40 C. The flask is cooled using a mixture of ice and salt, the outside temperature being at -3 C. The temperature rises to +9.5 ° C in three minutes. . Four minutes later, the temperature drops to + 6 "C. At this point, the current of
BF3 is stopped. Then slowly added 50 ml of a 10 ouzo solution of NaOH, so as to maintain the temperature at +30 C.
After washing with an aqueous solution of NaOH, the reaction product is dried over KgCOg, then distilled.
5.25 g distilled at 67-700C under 0.15 mmHg. These 5.25 g are then heated with 14 g of B (OC2H 3). at a maximum temperature of 150 C. The alcohol and excess B (OC2H3) 3 are removed by distillation, then the distillation is continued in vacuum to end at 0.5 mmHg at a temperature reaching 1200 C. The Boric ester is saponified with 15 ml of a 10-ouzo solution of KOH in methanol and in the presence of 2 ml of benzene. The product resulting from this reaction is distilled.
Boiling point: 72-730C at 0.12mmHg; d45 = 0,;
nest = 1.498.
Yield: 91%.
The allophanates are prepared according to the general method described by Zobrist and Schinz in Helvetica Chimica Acta, vol. XXXV, page 2385 (1952).
Pure isomers of formula III and, respectively, of formula IV are difficult to obtain due to the mobility of their double bond in the presence of acidic or alkaline reactants. The best way to isolate them is by reducing their dinitrobenzoates or allophanates using a small excess of LIAI4 in tetrahydrofuran. Their purification can be completed by fractional distillation or even better by chromatography.
Example 4:
The sulfuric acid of Example 1 is replaced by phosphoric acid, which leads practically to the same result as with sulfuric acid.
To isolate the mixture of the two isomers of formulas III and IV, from the isomer of formula V, the best method is fractional distillation under reduced pressure. The isomer of formula V is enriched in the higher boiling fractions which partly crystallize. The crystallized part is one of the two stereoisomeric compounds of formula V; it melts at 620 C.
