I>B</I> seraient arrêtées.
Apparatus <B> for counting </B> electrical <B> pulses </B> The present invention relates to an apparatus for counting electrical pulses supplied by a source of pulses. This apparatus is characterized by the fact that it comprises counting elements receiving the pulses from the source and each comprising several electric discharge devices associated with circuits such that a single discharge device can be conductive at the source. times, the conductivity being transmitted from one discharge device to another with each pulse supplied to the counting element by the pulse source,
each counting element comprising a device for setting the counting position in order to initially make the discharge device conductive corresponding to the number of pulses to be counted by this counting element, so that the last of these pulses makes the last of these pulses conductive. last discharge device of the counting element, means for the last discharge device of each counting element to provide, when it is made conductive, an operating voltage, and selection devices for applying the pulses from the pulse source to the next counting element, when the previous counting element has finished counting, and so on. The appended drawings represent, by way of example, some embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 schematically represents a counting element with a discharge tube with several cathodes and a common anode, the cathodes being associated with circuits for setting the counting position.
Fig. 2 schematically shows an apparatus for counting pulses comprising two counting elements.
Fig. 3 schematically shows the control circuit of a counting apparatus with two counting elements.
Fig. 3A is a view showing schematically the different elements and connections of a circuit comprising two counting elements which are electrically connected to the control circuit of FIG. 3.
Fig. 4 schematically shows an apparatus for counting pulses comprising four counting elements.
Fig. 1 of the drawings shows schematically a transmission tube with cold cathode discharge which comprises a counting element controlled by a control circuit and to which is connected a source of direct current by which the tube is ignited. Other terminals of the tube are connected to a source of sinusoidal pulses whose pulses are counted by the tube, and still other terminals of the tube are electrically connected to the means by which the tube can be put in order each time. operation for a predetermined counting following an operation thereof.
This tube 10 comprises a single anode 11 and several cathodes 12, 13, 14, etc., the last cathode being designated by 16. In a tube with ten cathodes, the cathode 16 would therefore be the tenth cathode while in a tube with twelve. cathodes this cathode 16 would be the twelfth cathode. It will be noted that a terminal C is electrically connected to the cathode 16. In the construction of the tube, the cathodes are arranged in a circle so that they will all be close to the common anode 11 and, to transmit the discharge d 'One cathode to the next in series, the tube is provided with guides 18 and 20, the latter being associated with each cathode. Conductors 21 and 22 connect the guides respectively to the terminals 23 and 24 of these guides.
Accordingly, a current pulse applied to terminal 23 will be supplied in turn to all guides 18 and, similarly, a current pulse applied to terminal 24 will be supplied to all guides 20.
The anode 11 is connected by a resistor 25 and by a conductor 26 to the positive terminal 27 of a direct current source, the voltage of which may be approximately 400 volts. The negative terminal of this direct current source is connected with conductor 28 leading to a terminal <I> D. </I> The function of terminals <I> C and D </I> will be understood as and when the description. Each cathode is capable of being electrically connected to the conductor 28 by a circuit which comprises a switch and a resistor as clearly shown in FIG. 1. For example, the cathode 12 is connected by the resistor 30 and the switch 31 to the conductor 28 and in a similar way the cathode 13 can be connected by the resistor 32 and the switch 33 to this conductor.
Only the cathode 16 is connected to the conductor 28 by a circuit 38 which only comprises the resistor 39. A conductor 40, in connection with a terminal G is associated with the conductor 28 and is respectively connected by the conductors 41, 42, 43 and 44 at the switch terminals 45, 46, 47 and 48. It will be noted that the switches 31, 33, 35 and 37, etc., constituting the device for setting the counting position, have two selection positions in one of which they electrically connect the corresponding resistors to the conductor 28 and in the other they electrically connect them to the terminals 45, 46, etc. and conductor 40 leading to terminal G. The position of the switch elements for the different cathodes will determine the particular cathode chosen to begin a counting operation.
In the schematic representation of the fi. 1 the second cathode, namely the cathode 13, is connected by its switch 33 to the terminal 46 so that this cathode is chosen to start the counting operation. Accordingly, in a ten cathode tube, the element will count eight current pulses for each operation thereof. A terminal A is connected by means of the conductors 50 and 52 to the guide terminals 23 and 24, the link comprising two capacitors 51 and 53. The two conductors 50 and 52 are connected to a circuit in parallel which comprises two resistors 54 and 55.
This parallel circuit has a midpoint between these two resistors which is connected by a conductor 56 to the movable contact 57 of a potentiometer 58 connected to the terminals of the direct current source. It will be noted that the movable contact 57 is in a position such that the guides 18 and 20 are normally held at a potential slightly higher than that applied to the cathodes. The potentiometer 58 is connected at 60 to the conductor 28 and a terminal B also has a connection with this conductor 28 by a conductor 61.
In the case where the terminals <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> are connected to a source supplying an alternating current of sinusoidal form, it will be understood that the capacitors 51 and 53 and the connection circuit comprising resistors 54 and 55 operate as a phase shift circuit to shift the phase of the voltage applied to the guide terminals 23 and 24. For example it is possible to apply to terminal 23 a forward shifted voltage and to terminal 24 a voltage shifted back, so that the current pulse first manifests itself on the guides 18 by a drop in potential of these guides and, after a time interval depending on the characteristics of the phase shift circuit, the current pulse manifests itself on guide 20 by a similar drop in potential.
The counting element of FIG. 1 is put into counting position by a special control pulse applied between terminals D and G. This negative pulse lowers the potential of cathode 13, connected by switch 33, chosen by the operator, to terminal G. The pulses to be counted from the pulse source are applied to terminals <I> A </I> and <I> B. </I> As soon as the control pulse has negatively polarized cathode 13.
this, under the effect of the first pulse received from the source, allows said pulse to pass between said cathode 13 and the common anode and the counting is carried out as follows: the application of the first pulse at the terminals <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> will excite the guides 18 and the discharge is consequently transmitted from the cathode 13 to the guide 18 associated with it. Immediately thereafter, the guide 20, associated with the cathode 13, is energized and the discharge is transmitted from the guide 18 to the guide 20. When the voltage applied to the guide 20 decreases the discharge is transmitted to the cathode 14 since, as is the case. explained, the guides are normally maintained at a potential slightly above that of the cathodes.
The next pulse applied to points A and B will cause the discharge to be transmitted from cathode 14 to guide 18 associated with it, then to its guide 20 and then to cathode 15, next in the series.
Accordingly, for each pulse from the source and applied to terminals <I> A, B, </I> the discharge is transmitted from one cathode to the next until the last cathode 16, so that the number d the pulses counted by the counting element is a function of the rank of the first cathode where the discharge takes place with respect to the last; the rank is controlled by the operator who acts on the switch corresponding to the number of pulses counted by the counting element.
As soon as cathode 16 conducts luminescence, current flows through resistor 39 of circuit 38 and a voltage drop in this resistor appears across terminals <I> C and D. </I> The voltage appearing thus at terminals <I> C and D </I> is used to transfer the counting operation to a second counting element which can represent the second stage of a series.
Fig. 2 of the drawings is a wiring diagram showing, in schematic form, the control circuit of a two-stage counting apparatus in which each stage comprises a counting element as shown in FIG. 1, having terminals A and <I> B, C and D </I> and <I> D </I> and G. In this apparatus, a pair of relief valves, such as thyratrons, are alternately made conductive so that the counting operation is performed by one counting element, then by the next, and so on, the operation being repeated as long as the control circuit is energized.
The apparatus of FIG. 2 comprises two counting elements which are generally designated by the references 70 and 80, each element performing a counting of a predetermined number of electrical pulses applied to the terminals <I> A </I> and <I > B </I> of the elements. The thyratrons of fig. 2 are indicated by the references 71 and 81 and an electric discharge tube of the double triode type is indicated by the references 72 and 82. Resistors 73 and 83 have an electrical connection with the anodes of the valves 71 and 81.
The anodes 106, 107 of the double triode valve are respectively connected to the primaries 74 and 84 of two transformers 75 and 85, each transformer having a pair of secondaries, 76 and 77 for the transformer 75, and 86 and 87 for the trans trainer 85. The control circuit is excited by a direct current source through conductors 90 and 91, the positive terminal of the source being connected to conductor 90. A resistor 92 is connected at its respective ends to conductors 90. and 91 and is therefore in parallel with the direct current source, this resistor and the moving contact 93 forming a potentiometer which can be adjusted to vary the potential applied to the pair of thyratrons 71 and 81.
A conductor 94 is connected with the movable contact 93 and with the resistors 73 and 83 which are respectively connected with the anode 95 of the valve 71 and the anode 96 of the valve 81. The cathodes 97 and 98 of these valves are joined by a conductor 99 which is in turn connected to the conductor 91 by a resistor 100 and a capacitor 101 mounted in parallel on this resistor. The control grid 78 of the valve 71 is connected by a conductor 102 to the terminal C of the counting element 70, while the control grid 88 of the valve 81 is connected by a. conductor 103 to terminal C of counting element 80. Conductor 90, connected with the positive terminal of the direct current source, is connected with cathodes 104 and 105 of valves 72 and 82.
The control gate 108 of the triode 72 is connected by a conductor 109 to the resistor 83, while the control gate 110 of the triode 82 is connected by a conductor 111 to the resistor 73. Accordingly, the conductivity of the triode 72 is controlled by that of thyratron 71, while the conductivity of triode 82 is controlled by that of thyratron 81.
The primaries 74 and 84 of the transformers 75 and 85 are connected to a terminal of the secondary 112 of a transformer 113. This transformer 113 is provided with a primary 114 whose terminals are connected to a source of alternating current at industrial frequency. approximately 110 volts. The opposite terminal of the secondary 112 is connected by a conductor 115 to the cathodes 104 and 105 of the triodes 72 and 82.
As explained previously, the primaries 74 and 84 each have a pair of secondaries associated with them. The secondary 76 is connected by conductors 116 and <B> 117 </B> to the terminals D, G respectively, of the counter element 70. In a similar way the secondary 86 is connected by conductors 118 and 119 to the terminals. terminals D and G respectively, of the counting element 80. The secondary 77 is connected by conductors 120 and 121 to the terminals <I> A, B </I> of the counting element 80. The secondary 87 is connected by conductors 122 and 123 to terminals <I> A, B </I> of the counting element 70. A conductor 124 connects the conductor 91 to the terminal D and the counting element 70, while a conductor 125 connects the conductor 91 in a similar way to the terminal D of the counting element 80.
A bypass circuit is provided in connection with the conductors 116 and 117, the latter comprising a battery 126 and a switch 127. The conductor <B> 117 </B> and therefore the terminal G of the counting element 70 can be connected to the negative end of the battery 126 by the switch 127. The positive end of the battery is connected to the conductor 116. The conductor 122, leading to terminal A of the counter element 70, is provided with a main switch 128 which controls the operation of the control circuit and the start of the counting operations of the elements 70 and 80.
It will be noted that the main switch 128 has a fixed link via a member 130 with the switch 127, so that when one switch is closed the other is necessarily kept open.
To explain the operation of the counting apparatus of fig. 2, assume that switch 128 is closed and thyratron 71 is conductive. As a result a voltage will exist across resistor 100 in the cathode circuit common to both thyratrons so that a negative bias will be maintained on the screen grid of thyratron 81. If a positive pulse is supplied to terminals <I> C, D </I> of the counting element 80, the thyratron 81 will become conductive and the tube 71 will be made non-conductive. This switching from one tube to another is effected by capacitor 131.
While the tube 71 was conductive, the capacitor 131 was charged in such a way that the end of the capacitor which is connected to the anode of the tube 71 was negative and the end which is connected to the anode of the tube 71. tube 81 was positive. When the tube 81 is made conductive by the positive pulse applied to the grid 88, the positive end of the capacitor 131 is electrically connected to the cathode 97 of the tube 71, so that the anode 95 of this tube is thus made negative with respect to its cathode, which extinguishes this tube.
When thyratron 81 conducts, a voltage drop will appear in resistor 83 between the cursor in contact with it and the positive end of this resistor. This voltage is applied to the gate 108 of the triode 72. In the same gate circuit there is also a voltage appearing in the resistor 92 between its positive end and the sensor 93. Between the gate 108 and the cathode 104 of the triode 72 there is therefore the sum of these two voltages, one appearing on a part of the resistor 92 and the other on a part of the resistor 83. The voltage on the part of the resistor 92 is sufficiently low to allow the triodes 72 and 82 to be conductive.
However, the addition of voltage across a portion of resistor 83 brings gate 108 to the cutoff region and stops the conductivity of tube 72. Accordingly, when thyratron 81 is conductive, triode 72 will be kept non-conductive while that the triode 82 will be conducting then that there is no voltage appearing on the resistor 73. The transformer 85 will therefore allow current to pass and an alternating voltage will be induced in its secondaries 86 and 87. The current pulses generated in the secondary 86 are applied to the terminals D, G of the counting element 80 and a periodic discharge is thus maintained in this counting element from the anode to the particular cathode which has been chosen to start the counting, depending on the desired particular count of that element.
The current pulses generated in secondary 87 will be applied to terminals A and B of counting element 70 and this element therefore functions to perform a counting operation. The number of pulses to be counted by element 70 will naturally depend on the cathode chosen to start counting. When the discharge has been transmitted to the last cathode of counting element 70, the voltage appearing at terminals <I> C, D </I> thereof will apply a positive pulse to thyratron 71, causing it to become a driver. The same action regarding capacitance 131 takes place as before and thyratron 81 is immediately turned off. With tube 71 being conductive, a voltage drop now appears across resistor 73 and there is no voltage drop across resistor 83.
This switch switches the conductivity of the triodes so that the triode 82 is turned off and the triode 72 is made conductive. The transformer 75 consequently allows current to flow and pulses are induced in its secondaries. The current pulses induced in the winding 76 are applied to the terminals D, G of the counter element 70 to put this element back in working order in the manner explained previously.
The current pulses induced in the rolling 77 are applied to the terminals A and B of the counting element 80 and this element now comes into operation to perform a counting operation in which each pulse applied to the terminals <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> will be counted by a transmission of the cathode discharge from the start to the last cathode, so that a signal voltage is produced across its C and D terminals. As explained previously, this signaling voltage applies a positive pulse to the gate 88 and the thyratron 81 is again made conductive, thus completing the cycle of operations.
Count operations will alternate between items 70 and 80 as long as the prime switch 128 is held in the closed position. If this switch is turned to the off position while the counter 80 is operating, counting by this element will continue until the counting is complete, after which the control circuit will cease to operate. However, if switch 128 were to open during operation of counting element 70, counting operation would stop immediately since the pulses on terminals <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> would be arrested. When the switch 128 opens, the switch 127 is closed automatically and the counting element 70 is put back into working order by the current supplied by the battery 126.
The counting apparatus of FIG. 2 will function to give precise counting operations and such an apparatus can be used as an impulse timer for the successive operations required for bead welding.
The counter element 80 will operate to adjust the duration of application of the welding current. This duration corresponds to the time corresponding to the number of pulses counted by the counting element 80 and set by action on one of the switches connecting the chosen cathode to terminal G. The start of the application of the welding current begins at the moment of the application of the first pulse to the counting element and ends as soon as the discharge is transferred to the last cathode of the counting element. Likewise, the counting element 70 functions to adjust the duration of the cooling periods between welds.
For a timing device for setting three or more operations taking place in succession, the apparatus may be supplemented by adding additional stages, each stage comprising a counting element having the characteristics and mode of operation described.
With further reference to FIG. 1, a device is shown there for returning the counting element to the counting position at the end of each counting operation. It comprises terminals E, F, which are respectively connected by a resistor 134 limiting the current. The conductor 132 is connected to the grid 135 of an electric discharge tube <B> 138. </B> The anode 137 of this tube is connected to the conductor 40 and, by a resistor 538 limiting the current, a connection is made with the conductor 28. The cathode 140 is joined by a conductor 141 to the positive end 142 of a battery 143 whose negative end is connected to the conductor 133.
A second battery 144 is used, joined by a conductor 145 to terminal 142 and by a conductor 146 to conductor 28.
When count reset pulses are applied to terminals E and F, tube <B> 138 </B> will be made conductive so that pulses applied to EF are amplified by triode 138 and return to terminals of resistor 538, that is to say at terminals DG to maintain the discharge between the anode 11 and the particular cathode chosen to start the counting operation. As the pulses at terminals E and F are terminated, tube 138 is maintained in the non-conductive state, since its gate is maintained at a potential which is more negative than its cathode 140.
Figs. 3 and 3A are wiring diagrams of a counting apparatus in which a pair of counting elements such as that of FIG. 1 are alternatively controlled with regard to their counting operation by means of a control circuit. The control circuit of FIG. 3 is similar in all respects to the control circuit shown in FIG. 2 and similar elements are identified by corresponding references. The thyratrons are indicated by 271 and 281 and the resistances connected to the respective anodes of these thyratrons are identified by 273 and 283.
So as explained previously, the conductivity of these thyra- trons controls the conductivity of triodes 272 and 282. Transformer 275 is associated with triode 272 and transformer 285 is associated with triode 282. Each transformer has a pair. secondaries which are connected by conductors to certain terminals of the counting elements 270 and 280 shown in FIG. 3A.
It emerges from the representation made by FIGS. 3 and 3A how the electronic parts of the counting elements 270 and 280 are electrically connected to the secondaries of the transformers generating the control pulses. Considering first the winding 277, it will be observed that the latter is connected by the conductors 320 and 321 to the terminals A and B of the counting element 280.
Similarly, winding 287 is connected by conductors 322 and 323 to terminals <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> of counting element 270. Also following the circuits of windings 276 and 286, it will be seen that these are electrically connected to terminals D and G, and that there is provided in this embodiment a double diode 329 interposed respectively in the circuits of windings 276 and 286. Also the switch 328 has a fixed link with switch 327 through member 330, so that when one is open the other is closed. When the switch 328 opens, if the counting element 280 is operating, it will continue to operate until the end of the counting operation and thus the heating time is never too short.
However, if the counting element 270 for the cooling time is in operation when the switch 328 opens, its counting operation is immediately terminated. Switch 327 is simultaneously closed and current source 316 is used to return counter element 270 to the count position.
Referring to the embodiment shown in fig. 4, it will be observed that four counting elements are employed, these being identified by the references 410, 411, 412 and 413. Each element consists of a transmission tube with cold cathode discharge comprising the same circuit elements. and circuit connection than that shown in FIG. 1. Each counting element is therefore provided with terminals <I> A, B, C, D, </I> and <I> D, </I> G. Terminals <I> A, B </I> are connected to means for stopping the current pulses supplied to the elements to be counted.
A signal voltage is produced at terminals <I> C, D </I> to cause the end of the counting operation of the respective element and terminals D, G are connected to the means for resetting the counting position of each counting element.
The counting elements are electrically connected to circuit members of a switching device consisting essentially of cold cathode gas tubes 414, 415, 416 and 417 and cathode resistors 418, 419, 420 and 421 respectively. Each of these cold cathode gas tubes consists of an anode, a cathode and a control grid. The anode 422 of the tube 414 is connected to a conductor 423 connected to the positive terminal of the direct current source which is provided to excite these gas tubes.
A conductor 424 is connected to the negative terminal of this energy source and the cathode 425 of the tube 414 has an electrical connection via the cathode resistor 418 with this negative conductor 424, this conductor being in addition connected at 426 to the terminal D of the counting element 410. The terminal C of this element is connected by a conductor 427, a capacitor 428 and a switch 430 with the grid 431 of the tube 414.
The counter element 411 is similarly connected by its terminals C, D to the cold cathode gas tube 415, the anode 432 thereof being connected to the positive conductor 423, the cathode 433 thereof being connected. by the resistor 419 to the negative conductor 424 and the gate 434 having a connection by a conductor 435 with the terminal C. Terminal D is connected by a conductor 436 to the conductor 424. Similar elements are electrically connected to the terminals <I> C and D </I> of the counting element 412 with the tube 416 and likewise the counting element 413 is connected to the tube 417.
As regards the latter tube, it should be noted that a switch 447 is interposed in the positive conductor 423 at a point located beyond the connection of the latter with the anode 442 of this tube. Consequently, it will be seen that the anode of this tube is at all times connected to this positive terminal so as to excite the tube 417.
This arrangement allows the conductivity to pass from one cold cathode tube to the next. For example, if tube 414 is conductive and if tube 415 is to be made conductive, then tube 414 is immediately turned off by a capacitor having an electrical connection with the cathodes of the tubes. The conductor 448 is electrically connected, respectively to the four cathodes of the tubes and between each tube is interposed a capacitor 450, the operation of which is such that only one tube can be conductive at a time. This operation will now be described in detail.
The transformers 451, 452, 453 and 454 inserted in the anode circuits of the vacuum tubes 455 to 458, constitute a pulse-emitting network to transmit the current pulses to be counted by the counting elements and to transmit in plus the counting reset pulses of these elements. The vacuum tubes are connected in parallel on conductors 460 and 461, these conductors being connected to the terminals of the secondary 462 of a power transformer 463 having a primary 464. The terminals of the winding 464 are connected to a source of power. alternating current constituted by the lines Li and L2.
As for the vacuum tube 455, its anode 465 is connected to the primary 466 of the transformer 451, which winding is in turn connected to the conductor 460. The cathode 467 of this tube 455 is connected to the conductor 461, while the grid 468 thereof has an electrical connection through a conductor 470 with the cathode 443 of the gas tube 417, this connection being made between the cathode resistor 421 and this tube. In a similar fashion, the vacuum tube 456 is connected to the conductors 460 and 461, the grid 474 being electrically connected by a conductor 475 to the cathode 425 of the tube 414 at a point between the tube and the cathode resistor 418.
Similar connections are provided for the vacuum tubes 457 and 458, and it is seen that the grid 479 of the tube 457 is connected by a conductor 480 to the cathode 433 of the gas tube 415, while the vacuum tube 458 has its grid 484 connected by a conductor 485 to the cathode 438 of the gas tube 416. A bias voltage source in the form of a direct current battery 486 has its positive terminal connected to the conductor 461, its negative terminal being electrically connected by a conductor 487 to negative conductor 424.
The transformer 451 is provided with several secondaries. A winding 488 is connected by the conductors 489 to the terminal A, B of the element 410. The other secondaries 490 thereof have a connection with the terminals D, C for returning the counting elements 411 to the counting position. , 412 and 413 respectively. The transformer 452 has two secon daries, one winding 491 having an electrical connection with the counting reset terminals of the counting element 410, the other secondary 492 of this transformer having an electrical connection with the terminals < I> A, B </I> of counting element 411.
The transformer 453 is provided with a secondary 493 which has an electrical connection with the terminals <I> A, B </I> of the counter element 412 and in a similar way the transformer 454 has a secondary 494 which is electrically connected to terminals <I> A, B </I> of counting element 413.
With switch 447 in the position shown, gas tube 417 is made conductive and the latter will pass current from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of the direct current power source. Current through this gas tube will produce a voltage across cathode resistor 421. Battery 486 provides negative bias to grid 468 of tube 455 through resistor 421 and conductor 470. This same bias is supplied to the grid of tubes. vacuum 456, 457 and 458 by cathode resistors 418, 419 and 420 and the respective grid conductors. These tubes are therefore normally maintained in the non-conductive state by this negative polarization voltage.
With the gas tube 417 being conductive, the voltage across resistor 421 is sufficient to bring the grid of vacuum tube 455 to a positive potential with respect to its cathode and to make the vacuum tube correspondingly conductive, so that it leaves no alternating current pulses supplied by the power supply line Li, L2 <I> to </I> through the primary 466 of the transformer 451. The secondary 488 of this transformer being connected to the terminals <I > A, B </I> of the counting element, this element accordingly begins a counting operation to count the pulses thus supplied by transmitting the discharge from the cathode to the anode of this counter as it was explained in conjunction with fig. 1.
When the discharge has been transmitted to the last cathode, a voltage pulse is applied to terminals <I> C, D </I> of this counting element 410 and the counting operation is repeated. If switch 430 is open, the voltage pulse is not supplied to gas tube 414. Additional secondaries 490 of transformer 451 having a link with the count reset terminals of meters 411, 412 and 413 respectively, the voltage pulses generated in these secondaries serve to return the three counters to their initial position.
When switch 447 moves to an up position to connect conductor 423 to the positive terminal of the DC power source and when switch 430 is closed, the voltage pulse applied across terminals <I > C, D </I> of the counting element 411 will be supplied to the grid 431 of the gas tube 414, and will make this gas tube conductive. Because capacitor 450 has an electrical connection with the cathodes of other gas tubes, tube 417 is turned off. This is due to the fact that the two tubes 417 and 414 being conductors, the capacitance makes the cathode of the tube 417 positive, with respect to its anode, from which the conduction of this gas tube stops.
The grid 468 of the gas tube 455 then returns to its negative polarization potential to stop the conduction of this tube and simultaneously the tube 456 becomes conductive by the fact that the grid of the latter is brought to a positive potential. The counting element 411 is now put back into operation since the current pulses> to be counted are supplied to it by the secondary 492 of the transformer 452. When the discharge is transmitted to the last cathode of the counting element 411, a pulse is generated, which is transmitted by the conductor 435 to the grid of the gas tube 415. This voltage pulse ensures the conduction of the tube 415 and simultaneously turns off the tube 414.
With tube 415 then conducting, grid 479 of vacuum tube 457 is brought to a conducting potential so that this vacuum tube ignites and the current pulses to be counted are now supplied to counter 412 by the secondary 493 of the transformer 453. When this counting element reaches the end of its counting operation, it will supply a voltage pulse to the grid of the gas tube 416. The conductivity of this gas tube will bring the tube to vacuum 458 to be conductive, so that the current pulses to be counted will be supplied to the counter element 413 by the secondary 494 of the transformer 454.
When the discharge is transmitted to the tenth cathode of element 413, the end of its counting operation is indicated by a voltage pulse applied to the grid of gas tube 417 and once again this tube is made conductive to achieve conduction of vacuum tube 455. The counting process described above will continue from one counting element to the next in series as long as switch 430 remains closed. If this switch 430 is to be opened during any part of the operation, the counting operation will continue until the vacuum tube 455 is turned on again.
With switch 430 open, the switching circuit is rendered inoperative so that the counting is terminated. However, the circuit remains ready to operate at all times and it is only necessary to close switch 430 to start the counting operation with the counting element 410 and to continue thereafter with the other elements.
The counting apparatus of FIG. 4 is characterized by a series of cold cathode discharge tubes that include the counting elements and which are electrically connected to a switching circuit to move from one counting element to the next as each element completes its counting operation. The counting apparatus also comprises a pulse transmission circuit which is electrically associated with the switching circuit. In operation, the counting elements 411, 412 and 413 can respectively control the clamping time, the welding time and the holding time of a welding operation, for example, the counting element 410 controlling the break time.
The apparatus is so constructed and arranged that an accurate count is ensured for each counting operation of the elements 411, 412 and 413 and if these operations are repeated, the counting element 410 will produce a count during the period of time. cut-off, all this being determined by the pre-setting of the elements. Also, it will be understood that when the switch 430 is opened, the apparatus will continue to operate until the gas tube 417 is made conductive, which energizes the vacuum tube 455 by controlling the counting element. of the cut-out time 410.
To set more than four operations, it is only necessary to add additional stages to the device shown in fig. 4, each stage comprising a counter element, a gas tube and a vacuum tube, connected together in a similar manner.
