Process for the preparation of esters of tertiary alcohols The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds which are useful, for example, in the fragrance and cosmetic industries and in the pharmaceutical industry. Esters of terpene-like trisubstituted carbinols, which have the following formulas
EMI0001.0009
in which n is a small integer, e.g.
B. represents one of 1-3, are compounds that play an important role in the fragrance and pharmaceutical industries. For example, acetic acid linalyl ester and propionic acid linalyl ester are used in the manufacture of fragrances, while isophytyl acetate is used in the synthesis of medicinal products. The direct production of the esters from the abovementioned trisubstituted carbinols by the previously known processes, however, has various disadvantages and deficiencies, some of which are listed below.
The quality of the reaction product is not very good because it is not homogeneous even after the most careful cleaning. The overall yields are small, since a large part of the carbinol used as starting material is converted into by-products other than the desired carbinyl ester. The implementation of the previously known Ver requires the use of relatively expensive reaction components and cumbersome working conditions. There are several other disadvantages such as: B. the need to use toxic substances.
The subject of the present invention is a process by means of which esters of lower alkanecarboxylic acids with terpene-like trisubstituted carbinols can be produced in high purity and in excellent overall yield. This method is economical and convenient. carry out and requires relatively cheap and non-toxic reaction components.

Formula III is setting. lower alkane carboxylic anhydride, such as. B. acetic anhydride, propionic anhydride, isobutyric anhydride, the mixed anhydride of formic acid and acetic acid, etc.
In this formula, R1 denotes hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical, where at least one R 'is a lower alkyl radical, such as. B. methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, n-hexyl, etc.
The formula (IV) represents a terpene-like trisubstituted carbinol, in which one substituent is the ethynyl radical, -C-CH, the second substituent (R2) is a lower alkyl radical and the third substituent (R3) is a monovalent isoprenoid hydrocarbon radical,

Borrowed working conditions are simple, so that the process can easily be transferred to industrial production on a large scale.
The chemical reaction on which the new process is based can be represented by the following equation: where the double bonds can be partially or fully hydrogenated, e.g. B.

is, in which formulas n denotes an integer that is at most 6. R2 can in particular denote methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, etc. be.
R3 can in particular be a 4-1-methyl-penten- (3) -yl radical or the hydrogenated radical 4-methyl-pentyl derived therefrom, a 4,8-dimethyl-nonadien- (3,7) -yl radical or a hydrogenated radical derived therefrom., e.g. B. 4,8-dimethyl-nonyl, a 4,8,12-trimethyl-trideca- trien- (3,7,11) -yl radical or a derived hydrogenated radical, z. B. 4,8,12-trimethyltridecyl 1lsw., Be.
The formula (V) represents. is an ester with a triple bond which is obtained by reacting the compound (III) with the compound (IV) in the presence of an acidic esterification catalyst.

EMI0003.0010
in which at least one R 'is a lower alkyl radical, reacts in the presence of an acidic esterification catalyst.
According to a particular embodiment of the process according to the invention, the carbinol IV is mixed with a slightly excess amount, relative to the molar amount, of the aluminum carboxylic acid anhydride of the formula III at room temperature in the presence of an acidic esterification catalyst. The acidic esterification catalysts used are preferably phosphoric acid and p-toluenesulfonic acid. However, other acidic esterification catalysts can also be used.
The new products of the formula (V) are substances that can be used as odorants, e.g. B. in the production of fragrances and perfumed Gemi rule, can be used. . The trisubstituted carbinols of the formula (IV) which are used as starting materials all contain an asymmetric carbon atom and can therefore occur in optically active forms.
Some of these starting materials can also occur in the form of geometrical isomers, since they contain a double bond in the isoprenoid radical. The present invention includes all stereoisomeric forms of the trisubstituted carbinols used as starting materials and the preparation of all stereoisomeric forms of the new end products.
Those trisubstituted carbinols of the formula (IV) in which R2 is methyl and R3 is a radical of the formula have proven particularly advantageous as starting materials
