Installation for the thermal treatment of metal parts The present invention relates to an installation for the thermal treatment of metal parts in a non-oxidizing gas atmosphere, comprising a furnace capable of being supplied with a non-oxidizing gas atmosphere, an apparatus for measuring the point dew of said atmosphere for the purpose of determining the hardness of the surface of metal parts. For example, the dew point measurement can be used to regulate the transfer of carbon between said atmosphere and the metal parts.
Said apparatus for measuring the dew point comprises two electrodes arranged so that the gap between them is made conductive when there is condensation, and a device for alternately heating and cooling said electrodes, respectively in response to condensation and evaporation occurring in this interval.
The object of the invention is to provide a furnace giving improved and regular results in the heat treatment of metal parts. In the case of adjusting the carbon content of the surfaces of metal parts, these results can be obtained by maintaining practically constant the action of carbon in the atmosphere of the furnace, that is to say the tendency to force carbon. in the surface to be treated or to remove it. This furnace can be used for various heat treatment processes, in particular for the heat treatment of the surfaces of steel parts known as case hardening.
The saturation and temperature conditions defined by the dew point determine the composition of the gas atmosphere in the furnace and thus the hardness of the resulting surface of the parts. The furnace can also be used, for example, for carbonitriding, neutral quenching, carburizing and decarburizing.
The installation forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that said dew point measuring device is continuously supplied with gas taken from the oven, and in that it comprises means for supplying the oven with a control gas for the dew point of said gaseous atmosphere, a control valve for supplying the furnace with said control gas, and an electrical circuit for controlling said valve as a function of the dew point variations detected by said device of measurement.
The appended schematic drawings represent, by way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of the installation which is the subject of the invention. Fig. 1 is a schematic view and a circuit diagram of this embodiment. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the heat treatment furnace.

Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 8-8 in FIG. 7.
Fig. 9 is a graph showing by a series of curves how the operating speed of the furnace changes at different temperatures.
As shown, the parts 10 to be treated are mounted in the chamber 11 of an oven heated to the appropriate temperature by heating elements 12 supplied with gas or operating with electricity placed in the vicinity of a hood 13 delimiting the heating chamber which is filled with a non-oxidizing gas having a composition suitable for the treatment to be subjected to the parts 10. If it is a question of carburizing them, this gas is supplied by a generator 14 and continuously delivered in the furnace by an adductor duct 14a, a certain part of the gas being able to escape continuously out of the chamber in which the gas is kept in motion by a fan 15 actuated by a motor.
The parts are placed in and extracted from the chamber 11 through an end orifice normally closed by a door 16 which can slide up or down through this orifice under the action of a mechanical actuator 17.
The carrier gas supplied by the generator 14 is the product of a catalyctic reaction between air and fuel gas; it contains varying proportions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, methane and water vapor. If, for example, it is a question of carburizing parts, the generator should be set so as to provide a relatively lean mixture with regard to the reaction between the gas and the parts and to add suitable quantities of a hydro-gas. carbureted in order to influence the amount of carbon.
For various reasons including the reactions which take place between the constituents of the gas and the parts being treated placed in the chamber 11, there is most often an increase in the dew point of the atmosphere of the chamber 11 but one can reduce it by increasing the amount of hydrocarbon gas in this chamber. Thus it is possible, by adjusting the admission of the hydrocarbon gas, to influence the dew point in the chamber and thus to ensure operating conditions ensuring the desired treatment of the parts.
The installation has automatic regulation of these operating conditions, so that despite the variations inherent in the treatment which takes place in the furnace, great uniformity of the carbon content of the treated parts is obtained. The method provided here consists in causing a portion of the gas to flow continuously out of the heating chamber 11, in measuring its dew point and, in response to a deviation thereof from a predetermined value or range of values, in varying the composition of the gas supplied to the furnace chamber in a way to restore the proper moisture content. By thus maintaining the atmosphere at a substantially constant dew point, a uniform carbon potential is achieved for a given process temperature.
To further improve the uniformity of the carbon transfer and allow heating to different selected temperatures, the installation includes means ensuring a correlation between the dew point setting and the temperature changes in question, so that any what desired carbon potential can be selected and maintained with a high degree of uniformity regardless of the operating conditions.
To adjust the temperature of the oven, the supply of energy to the heating elements 12 is regulated by means of an appropriate relay 21 of known construction capable of making them operate or, on the contrary, of putting them to rest in operation. tion of the opening and closing of a contactor 22. The changes occurring in the temperature of the furnace result in a variation of the voltage generated by a thermocouple 20 which, according to the well-known heat treatment technique, influences the temperature. input of a normally balanced bridge network 23 comprising a balancing potentiometer 24 actuated by a shaft 25a driven by a reversible electric motor 25.
The selection of the different temperatures to be kept in the oven is carried out by adjusting a control potentiometer 26.
During operation, a change occurring in the voltage generated by the thermocouple 20 destroys the equilibrium of the bridge network 23, thus producing an electric impulse which influences an electronic amplifier 27. The latter then starts the motor 25, which moves the cursor 28 of the balancing potentiometer 24 in a direction suitable for restoring the balance of the electric bridge. The motor 25 stops when this equilibrium is reached.
Thus the position of cursor 28 always corresponds to the temperature prevailing in the oven; each time the cursor 28, while moving in the direction corresponding to the drop in temperature, reaches a position predetermined by the adjustment of the potentiometer 26 and consequently of the temperature of the oven that is to be maintained, a cam 29 closes the contactor 22 , which turns on the heating elements 12 of the oven. These elements are put to rest following the opening of the contactor 22 when the desired temperature has been restored.
While it is true that the dew point of the atmosphere of the furnace can be modified in other ways, in particular by acting on the operation of the generator 14, it is in principle preferable to increase or decrease the ad. - mission of a gaseous fluid containing hydrocarbons such as propane which, at usual heat treatment temperatures, are unstable and combine with water vapor to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which lowers dew point and correspondingly increases the carbon potential of the fuel atmosphere. The dew point adjustment fluid, which may be natural gas, is supplied by a source 31 and arrives through an adductor conduit 30 leading to the chamber 11 of the furnace.
The gas flow is increased or decreased by the opening or closing of a valve 32 controlled by a solenoid 33 depending on the closing of a contactor 34. In this case, a very low flow of gas influencing the dew point occurs continuously in the furnace chamber, in particular through a normally open bypass duct 32a which is regulated by a valve 32b, so that the flow is only a small fraction of the value of the flow d supply of the primary fuel gas supplied by the generator 14 and sent to the furnace. The opening of the valve 32 significantly increases the arrival of the secondary gas.
The contactor 34 which controls the valve 32 is actuated by a cam 35 mounted on the output shaft of a reversible electric motor 37 associated with an electronic recording controller comprising a network 36, this controller having the same construction as the controller. reacting at the temperature which has been described above. The reversible motor 37 is excited from an amplifier 38 and controls the cam 35 as well as the cursor 39 of a balancing potentiometer 40. The control point of this network can be modified by adjusting the cursor of a potentiometer. 41.
In such controllers, the balancing motor also moves a style 36a (Fig. 3) by reciprocating it across an inscription sheet 36b which is continuously advancing, so as to draw a <B> 36th </B> record of changes in control regime. An electrical impulse corresponding in intensity to the dew point of the furnace atmosphere is produced by a positive device which continuously draws samples from this atmosphere, alternately cools and reheats each sample and measures the temperature at which condensation occurs, and that constitutes the dew point temperature.
For this purpose, the gas sample is cooled to a substantially uniform temperature following its routing outside the oven to a chamber 64 delimited by a casing 65 (fig. 8) so that the The gas flow which takes place is not influenced by disturbances from the outside air. The collection of the gas sample is provided by a suction pump 43 actuated by a motor and communicating with the chamber 64 by a duct 43a. After being tested, the gas sample escapes through the pump outlet.
Under the action of the vacuum generated in the chamber 64 during the operation of the pump 43, the gas coming from the chamber 11 of the furnace is sucked through a duct 44 and sent into the chamber 64 by a nozzle 46 having a lateral elbow and one conformation allows it so much to deliver the gas in the form of a jet or a stream in a narrow adjacent gap 47 (having about 0.05 mm. in width) formed between the opposite edges of the two electrodes 48. The latter are.montées on one of the side walls of the housing 65 vis-à-vis a window 65a. In the construction shown, the electros of the 48 are formed by thin semicircular plates having a thickness equal to 0.025 mm. and formed, for example, of platinum foil.
These plates are glued or sealed to a thin plate 49 having a thickness equal to 0.15 mm, made of a non-conductive material, for example glass, and itself fixed flat against one of the sides of a block 56 in good heat conductor material, for example copper, embedded in a flange 67 forming one of the walls of the housing 65 and having an orifice 66 facing the electrodes 48. Insulated conductors 50 connected to the electrodes 48 and extending towards the outside through holes of the flange 67 and of the block 56 which has a diameter equal to 25 mm. approximately and a thickness of 7 to 8 mm.
On the side opposite to the electrodes 48, the cleat 56 bears by a contact which is a good conductor of heat against an electric heating element 51 (FIG. 6) and which comprises flat elements 52 made of a resistor material joined at their opposite ends to terminals 53. These elements have the general shape of a ring surrounding a rod 54 integral with the block 56. The heating element is clamped against the block 56 by a nut 68 embedded in the wall of the casing and screwed onto the rod. 54 projecting outwardly, which is integral with the block 56. The heating element 51 is intended to receive electric current from a source 55a when a contactor 55 closes as a result of the energization of a relay 57.
The ability of the heating element 51 to raise the temperature of the electrodes 48 is significantly greater than the cooling capacity of a refrigerator device 581 (Fig. 4) also mounted under heat conduction conditions with respect to the cleat 56 and Capable of cooling electrodes-48 below the lowest dew point temperature the furnace atmosphere will ever reach. This device 581 comprises a compressor 58 (fig. 1) actuated by a motor and having a construction of known type for liquefying a refrigerant 59 (fig. 4) which is vaporized in a casing 60.
An end portion 61 of the latter envelops one end of a rod 62 made of metal which is a good conductor of heat, the other end of which is screwed onto the rod 54 of the block 56 and is thereby maintained in a thermal conduction relation with respect to him.
It is understood that as the electrodes 48 are gradually cooled by the refrigerator device 581 described above, the water vapor condenses in the interstice 47 at the temperature of the dew point. A device is provided to measure the temperature of the block 56 and send a corresponding electrical voltage into the network 36. The device in question here consists of a thermocouple 71, the junction of which is embedded in the block 56 very close to the gap. 47 between the electrodes 48 that is to say here immediately behind the plate 49.
Thermocouple 71 is connected by conductors 72 to the input of network 36 to which the voltage generated by the thermocouple is applied.
The alternate heating and cooling of the electrodes 48 in relatively short operating cycles (usually about three seconds) is accomplished by sending energy into the heating element whenever the electrodes 48 are subsequently shorted. of the condensation of water vapor in the interval 47 between them.
For this purpose, the electrodes 48 are connected in a circuit 73 containing a current source 74, and the winding of a galvanometer 75 whose wire 76 remains in the zero position which is shown in the drawing, as long as the electrodes 48 are above the dew point temperature which prevails, no condensation occurring in the gap 47 which thus offers optimum resistance. When condensation occurs, a current flows through the winding of the galvanometer 75, so that its needle 76 moves away from zero and thus moves a paddle 78 with respect to an associated coil 79 forming an inductor.
An electric pulse is thus applied to the input of an electronic amplifier 80, the output of which energizes relay 57, which closes contactor 55 and operates heating element 51.
The heat action of the heating element 51 is significantly greater than the cooling capacity of the refrigerator 581, so that after a very short time (usually about 2 1/2 seconds) the temperature of the electrodes 48 and of the gap 47 is raised above the dew point of the atmosphere of the furnace, which causes the evaporation of the condensate in the gap 47 of the electrodes 48. The resulting increase in the resistance of this gap 47 moves the paddle 78 in the opposite direction and again deprives relay 57 and the heating element 51 of power.
This initiates the cooling phase of another duty cycle and after a short time (usually about 2 seconds @ / 2) the vapor begins to condense again in the gap 47 between the electrodes 48, this which causes a drop in its resistance. The heating element 51 is thus supplied again.
By providing a suitable ratio between the respective actions of the heating element 51 and the cooler <B> 581 </B> by enveloping the gap 47 between the electrodes 48 and directing the gas sample directly towards it from the As indicated above, it is possible to shorten the heating cycle and the cooling cycle so that the temperature of the copper block 56 varies only very little, for example by two degrees centigrade. Thus the thermocouple detects the average temperature of the block 56 and generates in the network 36 a voltage which is a function of the temperature, which remains fairly constant and which represents an exact measurement of the dew point of the atmosphere of the furnace.
The sensitivity of the instrument is maintained by applying a wetting agent to the glass plate 49 in the gap 47 between the electro of the 48. This agent plays a dual role: - Firstly, it maintains the surface of the glass plate. glass 49 in a clean condition and thus prevents foreign matter from accumulating in the gap 47 between the electrodes 48 and from prematurely connecting them. Second, it forces the condensate, as it occurs on the plate 49, to spread out in a thin sheet rather than forming droplets. As a result, moisture spreads rapidly from electrode to electrode, so that the instrument responds almost instantly to the first condensation.
The wetting agent preferably consists of a chemically inert nonionic surfactant either of the polyoxyethylene aliphatic ether type or of the alkylaryl alcohol-polyether type.
So that the position of the balancing cursor 39 of the network 36 corresponds at all times with the carbon potential of the atmosphere of the furnace, means are provided for applying to the input of the network a voltage which corresponds to the changes occurring in the oven. oven temperature and which varies with them. Likewise, this temperature can be varied by manual control by adjusting the potentiometer 26 and therefore the control point of the instrument. Since the position of the driven shaft 25a corresponds at all times to the temperature in the furnace, it is used to generate a temperature compensating voltage which is added to and hence combined with the point-dependent voltage. dew to form the input voltage of the recording controller.
This result is obtained by coupling, thanks to a gear 86, the shaft 25a of the slider 83 of a potentiometer 84, in order to generate a voltage through conductors 85 connected to the input of the network including the amplifier 38. As time goes by and as the temperature of the furnace rises and falls, the cursor 83 moves and increases or decreases the compensating voltage as appropriate by correspondingly influencing the position of the driven element 39 for any given value of the dew point.
Thus, the action of the latter, although determined primarily by the dew point dependent voltage is modified by changes in the temperature of the furnace, in order to produce a resulting movement which is exact measurement of the carbon potential of the furnace atmosphere. These movements are recorded in 36e on graph sheet 36b (fig. 3) so that the location of style 36a corresponds to the value of the carbon potential of the furnace atmosphere.
The proper relationship to be maintained is shown in fig. 9, each curve representing, for a given temperature in the furnace, the temperature values of the dew point, as a function of the different carbon potentials which are expressed by the percentage of carbon absorbed at the surface of a steel part. Thus, for example, if the cemented part forming the surface layer of the part must have a carbon content equal to 0.5 following heating of this part to about 9250 C, a point temperature of dew equal to approximately 3 C.
The oven described comprises means for putting the automatic control to rest when operating conditions arise which prevent normal operation during service, for example due to the fact that the door 16 of the oven is opened to put in a new batch of parts. This functional state is detected by the closing of a normally closed contactor 87 (fig. 1 and 2) mounted on the outer wall of the furnace casing and designed to be opened by a cam 88 mounted on the door 16. when it is lifted to open the oven.
This closing has the effect of putting the automatic dew point controller at rest for a period of time which extends beyond the closing of the oven door for a time sufficient to allow the reestablishment of normal operating conditions. including purging the furnace of its air or destroying by combustion any oil or other material that may be on newly placed parts. There is provided for this purpose a timer 90 which operates a contactor 91 controlling the arrival of electrical energy to the dew point detection and control device and to the return which controls the valve 32.
It is preferable that the time elapsing before the automatic control is restored is extended to a fixed but selectively adjustable value beyond the closing of the oven door, the time (which is generally seven minutes). thus being uniform for successive cycles of operation of the oven regardless of the variations in time required to reload the oven.
A timer capable of performing this function can measure times up to 15 minutes depending on the determination imposed by the setting of an operating knob 92. When contactor 87 is closed as a result of the door being re-closed oven, the timer is energized and intervenes to close the contactor 91 after a time determined by the setting of the button 92. Automatic control is thus restored, so that the dew point measuring mechanism acts again and that the inflow of the dew point adjustment gas can be increased by opening valve 32 as needed in order to achieve and maintain the selected carbon potential of the furnace atmosphere.
By thus interrupting the action of the automatic control and delaying the resumption of its operation, the deviation of the furnace atmosphere from the desired composition during unloading and reloading of the furnace is effectively reduced to a minimum as is the time required to reestablish the desired carbon pontential.
During the actual operation of the furnace and its automatic control in the technique of carburizing steel parts, the temperature controller is developed by adjusting the potentiometer 26 according to the temperature necessary to efficiently carburize the parts it needs. 'acts in particular to treat. Potentio meter 41 of the recording controller is adjusted in the same way as a function of the carbon potential corresponding to the hardness that is to be obtained by cementation. The heating of the furnace is started and a gas having the suitable composition and supplied by the generator 14 is sent into the furnace at the suitable supply rate.
At the same time, a low flow of hydrocarbon or auxiliary gas is admitted through valve 32b and combined with the main carrier gas in chamber 13 of the furnace.
After a general equilibrium has been reached, the parts to be treated are placed in the oven, then the oven door is closed. The action of the automatic control system is then delayed for a period of time determined by the position of the button 92 of the timer. When the contactor 91 connected to the pipe closes, the dew point mechanism kicks in, and the heating element 51 and the associated cooler act to alternately heat and cool the electrodes 48 in order to evaporate the moisture condensed in it. the interval 47 between them, then to cool them below the dew point existing at that time.
The average temperature reached by the copper block 56 during the relatively fast cycles corresponds to the dew point of the atmosphere of the furnace, the thermocouple voltage thus derived being applied to the network 36. Assuming that the temperature of the oven remains fixed, a change in the dew point temperature destroys the equilibrium of the network 36, so that the motor 37 starts to rotate in a proper direction to correct the imbalance, the motor stopping when the equilibrium is reached.
Whenever, as a result of the carburizing reaction, the dew point rises above the value corresponding to the desired carbon potential as determined by the adjustment of potentiometer 41, cam 35 rotates. an angle sufficient to close the contactor 34 thereby opening the valve 32 to increase the flow of gas lowering the dew point in the furnace. This continues until as a result of the above-described action of the electrodes 48, the galvanometer 75 and the thermocouple 71 the reestablishment of the proper dew point is detected. At this moment, the network 36 will have reacted and the cam 35 will have returned far enough by reverse pivoting to open the contactor 34 and close the valve 32.
If, in particular as a result of the manual adjustment of the potentiometer 26, the temperature of the oven changes, the compensating potentiometer 84 acting as a result of the resulting rebalancing of the network 23, correspondingly destroys the equilibrium of the network 36, which, as above, will be rebalanced to another dew point temperature as required (see Fig. 9) to maintain the selected carbon potential at the new furnace temperature.
