Propellant for projectiles The present invention relates to a propellant for projectiles, which is characterized in that it consists at least for the largest part of propellant grains which have a surface area of 75-84 em2 / g and a smallest material thickness of 0.381-0.635 mm In the whole zone, which extends from the surface of the individual grains to a depth of about 1 sixth of the smallest material thickness in the interior of the grains, a retarding agent with an explosion heat of at most -200 cal / g is uniformly distributed.
The invention also relates to a method for producing the propellant defined above. This process is characterized by the fact that a cellulose containing nitrocellulose is pressed through a nozzle, the pressed mass is broken down into propellant grains with a surface area of 75-84 cln2 / g and a minimum material thickness of 0.381-0.635 mm and then the grains with a retarder, which has a heat of explosion of less than -200 cal / g, treated in such a way that the retardant is only in the zone that looks from the surface of the individual grains to a depth of about 1 sixth of the smallest material thickness in the Inside of the grain extends, dispersed.
So far propellant grains of various shapes and chemical compositions have been proposed for cartridges of the caliber 7.62 mm and similar calibers, but none of these propellants has proven to be completely suitable in practice. Of these different types of propellant, tubular propellant grains with a dinitrotoluene coating still had the fewest disadvantages, so that propellants of this type have hitherto been used almost exclusively in such cartridges.
These grains are excellent, but after a relatively small number of shots from a machine gun or. other automatic firearms, there is a noticeable reduction in projectile effectiveness and shooting accuracy. This phenomenon is due to the fact that the inner wall of the tube in the immediate vicinity of the closure is eroded or otherwise damaged by the gases evolved during the explosion of the propellant. becomes. So far this condition could only be eliminated by stopping the fire and replacing the barrel or barrel.
The propellant according to the invention now has improved ballistic properties compared to the known similar propellants and is suitable as a charge in cartridges for machine guns and other automatic firearms of the caliber 7.62 mm and similar calibers. The new propellant also has a less pronounced erosion effect than the known propellants.
As a retardant for the propellant according to the invention, preference is given to using substances that do not migrate at all temperatures to which propellants are normally exposed, but rather remain distributed in said zone of the grain without penetrating the core of the grain in any appreciable amount. Any non-migrating retardant with a heat of explosion of less than -200 cal / g can be used. Who prefers the retarder with an explosion heat of -1000 to -2500. But you can also use detergents with a heat of explosion up to about -200, only the latter are not as effective. In games for such agents are the dialkyl phthalates, z.
B, dibutyl and diamyl phthalate, the diaryl phthalates, e.g. B. diphenyl phthalate, also triphenyl phosphate, butyl stearate, diaryldialkylureas, z. B. diethyldiphenylurea, methylethyldiphenylurea, dimethylurea, finally glycerine sebacate, tricresyl phosphate and the like. The amount of retarding agent used is suitably not less than 3% and not more than 12% of the weight of the grains.
The process described in US Pat. No. 1955927 is particularly suitable for introducing the delaying agent into the above-mentioned zone of the grains and fixing it there.
The heat of explosion constant of the constituents of the powder grains is a quantity that is determined from the heat of combustion of the substances in question, by taking that of de Pauw in the Zeitschrift für das Entire Schiess- und Explosstoffwesen, Volume 32, Pages 11, 36 and 60 (1937) published formulas for the calculation. The value referred to as the heat of explosion of retardants is a constant that reflects the influence of the substance on the amount of heat developed when the explosive components of the powder grain are ignited.
This constant can also be determined experimentally by burning a dry sample of a propellant powder without a delay agent in an adiabatic calorimeter bomb with a nitrogen atmosphere and measuring the heat of combustion according to a known method. Then a dry sample of the same propellant powder, but a certain amount Retardant contains, burned in the bomb and in turn measured the heat of combustion ge. If the difference between the heats of combustion of the two samples is divided by the weight of the retarding agent, the heat of explosion of the retarding agent in question is obtained.
The explosion heat constant of a deceleration agent is therefore a measure of its effect on the explosion temperature of a propellant. To z. B. To determine the heat of explosion of dibutyl phthalate, a dry sample of one made from about 90% nitrocellulose and about 101,
10 propellant consisting of nitroglycerin burned in a calorimeter bomb under nitrogen. Another dry sample of the same propellant, which according to this invention contained about 7% dibutylphthala.t, was then burned under the same conditions. The heat of explosion of the propellant without quenching agent was found to be about 1070 cal / g of the propellant burned, while the heat of explosion of the propellant, which contained the retarding agent, was found to be about 840 cal / g.
There. 931 / o of the grain consisted of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin, the combustion of these two components of the propellant, which had a delaying agent, had to be 93 x 1070 or 995 cal. If you aim at the 840 ea.l actually obtained in the experiment from the calculated 995 cal, 155 cal difference per gram remains between the heats of explosion of the two samples. This reduction is due to the effect of the retarder.
Since there are only 0.07 g of dibutyl phthalate per g of propellant, 155 has to be divided by 0.07 in order to express the effect of the retarding agent on the propellant per g of the retarding agent, i.e. This means that every gram of dibutylpluthalate reduces the heat of explosion by one, propellant by means of about 2200 cal. If it is not indicated that the retarding agent reduces the heat of explosion of the propellant, the calculated value is given the negative sign. The heat of explosion of dibutyl phthalate is therefore -2200 approx. L / g.
The propellant grains can be obtained by pressing a partially or fully gelatinized nitrocellulose through a nozzle in the form of tubes or rods and cutting the briquettes into grains of the desired length. The grains he received can optionally have one or more bores; The prerequisite is that the surface of the propellant grains is 75-84 cm2 / g. If the grain has holes, the walls of these holes must be treated together with the other surfaces of the grain with the delaying agent. For this reason, compact or perforated grains in which the dimensions of the bores are dimensioned so that the walls are easier to pull over are preferred.
plan gets the best results when the length of the grain is practically equal to its thickness. In order to obtain the desired value of the smallest dimension of the grains, a nozzle can be used to squeeze out the nitrocellulose which has such a profile. is that the grains obtained by breaking up the extruded strand already have the desired smallest dimension, or the nitrocellulose can be pressed out initially without taking into account the desired smallest thickness, cut the strand into pieces and roll the latter, in order to give them the desired smallest dimension.
According to the known processes in which retarders and activating agents (energizers, energizing modifiers) are used to achieve the desired ballistic effects with propellants containing nitrocellulose, the retardant can be used in the case of the propellant present in an amount of 3- Use 12% to achieve the ballistic properties essential for the 7.62 mm caliber, using an energizing modifier such as an energizing modifier to generate special ballistic effects. B. a polyhydric alcohol such as nitroglycerin, the propellant grains can incorporate.
Appropriately, the powder granules have a specific weight of about 1.5. But even those powder grains according to the invention which have a lower specific weight have a less erosive effect on the barrel or barrel of a weapon than the known propellants. The amount of activating agent required for a propellant with two explosives is generally 10-20% of the weight of the propellant grain. For example, the smallest dimension of a sphere is to be understood as its diameter.
The smallest dimension of a tubular grain can be the minimum distance between the wall delimiting the bore and the outer surface of the grain or the distance between two outer surfaces of the grain (parallel to the pipe axis), depending on which distance is the smaller.
So far it has not yet been possible to clarify why the propellant according to the invention has a less erosive effect on the barrel or the barrel at the barrel end of a weapon than the propellants customary up to now with an explosion heat of over -200 cal / g and a surface that is only half of those of the invention. Propellant or even less. However, it has been found that cartridges filled with the propellant according to the invention:
> Show an extraordinary improvement over cartridges that are filled with a propellant charge consisting of perforated grains, according to the Ver. described in Technical Manual No. 9-2900 Military Explosives of August 29, 1940 of the War Department of United States Government driving have been established. In this test, the barrel is deemed to be no longer usable if the projectile trajectory has a deviation of at least 10 and if the muzzle velocity of the projectile has decreased by more than 60 m per second.
The following describes the production of an exemplary embodiment of the propellant according to the invention.
A powder base with an average nitrogen content of about 13.2 / o is obtained by adding about 3 parts by weight of hydrous nitrocellulose with a stick material content of about 13.4 / o with about 1 part of hydrous nitrocellulose. a stick material content of about 12.6%. About 100 parts by weight of the resulting water-containing nitrocellulose are with about. 125 parts of ethyl alcohol dehydrated in one of the usual dewatering presses. The resulting block of about 100 parts of nitrocellulose and about 33 parts of alcohol is crushed and mixed with about 66 parts of diethyl ether in order to partially convert the mass into the colloidal state.
During the stirring, which takes place in order to mix the solvent completely with the nitrocellulose, approx. 1 part of diphenylamine was added. The colloidal mass is then pressed into a block, pressed through a nozzle, again pressed into a block in a suitable device and finally pressed through a nozzle through which a solid rod is produced, the nozzle having an inside diameter of approximately 1 mm. This solid rod is cut into propellant granules as evenly as possible.
The ether alcohol and the other volatile substances are then removed by drying in the air by storing the granules in a room with an average temperature of about 30 C for the first 24 hours and about 30 C for the next 24 hours. 40 C and around 45 C the following week. Then about 100 parts of the propellant granules obtained are suspended in about 330 parts of water. About 22 parts of an emulsion are added to this suspension, which consists of about 11 parts of nitroglycerin, about 4 parts of Ä thy lacetat, about 7 parts of toluene and about 0.1 part of gum arabic in about 75 parts of water, the temperature of the slurry on about. 65 C, and then further increased to about 70 C over a period of about 4 hours.
Air is then passed through the slurry with constant stirring to drive off the ethyl acetate and toluene. It takes about 13 hours to completely remove the solvent. The temperature is then increased to about 72 ° C., whereupon 1 part of gum arabic is added.
An emulsion of about 72 parts of dibutyl phthalate and about 0.05 part of an emulsifying agent, e.g. B. gum arabic, in about 20 parts of water, added and the resulting slurry stirred for about 5 hours, the blowing agent grains being separated from the solution. About 1000 parts of the cologne obtained are coated with about 5.0 parts of potassium nitrate, about 2.5 parts of diphenylplithalate and about 1/2 part of dinitro toluene by adding the granules.
the mass described is circulated in a tube for about 30 minutes at 55 ° C. and since after about 0.4 part of graphite is added and then reacted for a further 30 minutes. The resulting granules have a surface area of about. 77 cm = per g of propellant, a smallest dimension of about 0.38 mm and contain about 6.5% by weight of dibutyl phthalate, which is evenly distributed in that region of the granule which is about 0.075 mm from any point on the surface reaches far into the grain.
This embodiment of the invention relates to propellants for the 7.62 mm caliber. However, according to the present invention, propellant charges for other machine guns in other caliber ranges, e.g. B. caliber 7.69 mm, 7.92 mm, 7 mmn and the like.
The embodiment of the invention described can be modified in many respects by those skilled in the art. So you can z. B. use other suitable methods to treat the propellant grains with the delaying agent. Likewise, two different base materials can be used for the propellant, or another suitable method for introducing the activating agent into the grain can be used. However, compositions for propellants consisting of nitrocellulose are particularly suitable for the present purpose. Finally, ballistic modifiers, e.g. B. carbon black or the like can be added.
