The present invention relates to a shock-absorbing mechanism for the trolley of an office machine (typewriters or accounting machines, for example).
Numerous damping mechanisms of this type have already been proposed. One of the difficulties encountered in using some of these known mechanisms is that, as they are constructed to effectively retard a fast moving cart, their inherent damping characteristics are great enough to oppose the movement of a cart sufficiently. moving relatively slowly, to prevent it from completely reaching the desired and determined limit position.
Such a shock-absorbing mechanism, capable of effectively slowing down a typewriter carriage as it approaches the end of a long stall stroke, and therefore being driven at a relatively high speed, can slow down by a considerable amount. so strongly a carriage moving at a relatively low speed as it approaches the end of a short tab stroke that it prevents the carriage from completing its tab run before the carriage returns below it. control of the exhaust mechanism.
As a result, when the carriage is returned to the control of the escape mechanism, it may be one or more letter spaces away from the correct tab position. Also under these conditions, such shock-absorbing mechanisms used to slow down carriages as they approach the end of their return movements - that is to say movements opposed to letter spacing or lettering movements. tabulation - can prevent the carriages from being correctly positioned at the end of their travels when the return speed of the carriage is variable depending on the length of the return stroke.
This interference can prevent the correct positioning of a carriage in its head-of-line position, resulting in an unwanted offset at the margin. The present invention relates to a shock-absorbing mechanism for the movable carriage of an office machine with a frame, comprising a fluid-damping device, the fluid of which can escape through an adjustable valve, so as to exert a damping the size of which varies in the same direction as the speed of the carriage.
This mechanism is characterized in that said valve comprises parts mounted respectively on the frame and on the carriage and capable of engaging each other in a determined position of the carriage with a force increasing with the speed of the carriage at the time of letting. 'engagement of said parts, so as to adjust the action of the damping device: according to the real speed of the carriage, from a maximum value to a minimum value.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a partial section. Fig. 2 is a view, on a larger scale, of a detail shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view corresponding to FIG. 1. FIG. 4 is a view, on a larger scale and in perspective, of a detail shown in FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a schematic view of this embodiment mounted on a typewriter provided with a motor carriage return mechanism. The damping mechanism which will be described is mounted on a typewriter. Only those common or known parts of the machine have been shown which are necessary to understand the cooperation of the shock-absorbing mechanism with the associated parts of the typewriter. The fi-. 5 schematically shows a fixed frame 1 of a typewriter, on which is mounted a chain 2 for the letter spacing and for the return stroke.
The carriage 2 is supported in a known manner on the frame 1 by rollers or balls 3. A carriage return tape 4 is connected to the carriage 2 and extends to the left as shown in FIG. 5 (to the right when looking at the machine from the front) passing around a guide roller 5 jet, from there to the motor mechanism (not shown) to wind the tape 4 and move the carriage in the direction of return, that is to say to the right looking from the front of the machine and to the left in the representation in fig. 5,
and in the direction of the arrow a in FIG. 3. The operating mechanism of the tape 4 can be of any suitable type.
The shock-absorbing mechanism com takes a percussion element 6 fixed to a fixed part of the frame 1, and a dash-pot 7 fixed to the carriage 2. The members 6 and 7 are separated from each other for the most much of the course of the carriage on the frame, but some of their parts may come into engagement with each other when the carriage arrives in a determined position or in a zone of determined course during its return stroke.
The mechanism could however be arranged so that the members 6 and 7 cooperate with each other when the carriage moves in the opposite direction, for example to slow down the carriage with a damping effect at the end of a movement. storytelling stroke, during which the carriage moves in the direction of letter spacing.
In general, the damping of the stop of the carriage approaching a determined end of travel is ensured by the resistance to the escape of a fluid, for example air, outside of the dash-pot 7. The shock absorbing mechanism shown is sensitive to a relatively high speed of the carriage when it comes into action, so as to ensure relatively high braking or shock absorption, and it is sensitive. relatively slow movement of the carriage to ensure a relatively low degree of shock absorption or deceleration.
The dash-pot 7, mounted on the carriage 2 by a bracket 8 and screws 9, comprises a cylinder 10 having an outer wall 11, a fixed end wall 12 and a plunger 14 capable of reciprocating in the cylinder 10 The plunger 14 comprises a recess 15 receiving one end of a return spring 16, the other end of which bears against the fixed end wall 12 of the cylinder. The assembly is such that normally, that is to say when the organs 6 and 7 do not cooperate with the braking of the carriage, the spring 16 maintains the plunger 14 approximately in the position shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, i.e. on the side of the percussion element 6.
A rod 17 integral with the plunger 14 protrudes outside the cylinder 10 through a central opening 18 in a removable end wall 19 held against a shoulder 20 of the wall 11 of the cylinder by a circular spring retaining ring. 21 bandée .dans a groove 22 formed in the end wall 19 of the cylinder. End wall 19 has a clearance opening 23 to allow air to enter and exit relatively freely from the cylindrical space between plunger 14 and end wall 19.
An exhaust channel 24 extends axially through the rod 17 from its outer or free end (to the left in Fig. 1) to the base of the recess 15 in the plunger 14; this channel is in permanent communication with the cylindrical chamber between the plunger 14 and the end wall of the cylinder 12.
During operation, when the carriage moves on the return stroke, that is to say to the left according to fig. 1, 3 and 5, the free outer end of the rod 17 engages the element 6 mounted on the frame, just before the carriage reaches the determined position in which it is to be stopped. This brings the plunger in. 14 and rod 17 to move relative to cylinder 10 (to the right of fig. 1), which requires that the air which is in the cylinder chamber to the right of plunger 14 is forced out through the cylinder chamber. channel 24.
As the channel 24 has a relatively small straight section compared to that of the cylinder, a pressure will momentarily build up in the chamber so as to oppose the displacement of the plunger with respect to the cylinder and thus slow down the carriage. . When the carriage has been stopped and then moved in the opposite direction or letter spacing direction, which results in separation of the members 6 and 7, the spring 16 returns the plunger 14 to its normal position. allows air to escape at the left end of the cylinder through the clearance opening 23.
A valve mechanism. is incorporated in the members 6 and 7 and exerts such a regulation on the movement of the rod 17, that it allows the shock-absorbing mechanism to exert a greater or lesser retarding force on the carriage depending on the more or less high speed of movement of the carriage as it approaches the position where it is to be stopped.
The valve parts are automatically adjusted to cooperate with each other so as to allow the escape of air at a speed which varies inversely with the variation of the speed of the carriage, i.e. to allow a relatively slow or restricted air outlet from the exhaust channel 24 when the carriage is moving at a relatively high speed when the shock-absorbing mechanism comes into action, and a relatively fast or not air outlet restriction of the exhaust channel when the carriage is moving at a relatively low speed upon entry into action.
The member 6 com carries a frame 25 in the form of a U, fixed to the frame 1 by a screw 26 and provided with tabs 27 which extend inwardly to hold in position a block 28 of deformable elastic material, for example made of rubber.
The block 28 constitutes a firing pin and valve combination, the face of which is aligned with the rod 17 with respect to the direction of movement of the carriage so as to be able to engage with the outer end of the rod 17 when the carriage reaches a determined position. .in its return stroke, the end 29 of the rod 17 constituting a valve part capable of cooperating with the block 28 to regulate the speed of exhaust of the air from the cylinder chamber through the passage of the cylinder. rod 24.
The construction and mode of cooperation of the valve parts 29 and 28 vary the resistance to the flow of exhaust air between the two valve parts and hence out of the dash-pot cylinder. As seen in fig. 4, the outer end of the rod 17 is rounded and convex; it has a recess 30 in the shape of a cross which communicates at its center with the exhaust channel 24.
When the valve piece 29 strikes the valve piece 28 during a relatively high velocity displacement, the initial inflection of the rod 17 and the plunger 14 to the right (from Figs. 1 and 3) is relatively small. because of the inertia of the plunger and the rod. Accordingly, the left end of the rod including the valve portion 29 protrudes into the block 28, as far as the elastic flexion of the material permits, with the end of the rod 17 moving up to the position indicated by the dotted line 31 in FIG. 2.
In these relative positions of the valve parts 28 and 29, a relatively large part of the open face of the cross-shaped recess 30 will be covered by the block face 28, so that the exhaust air s 'flows following four relatively long lateral paths, to exit between the two valve parts. As a result, the resistance to exhaust air from the cylinder chamber will be relatively large, and the effect of shock absorption or braking will be relatively large.
To accentuate the flow limiting characteristics of the valve device, the four grooves that make up the cross-shaped recess tapers from the maximum width (in the center of the recess) to the minimum width (near of the outer wall of the rod 17). Thus, when the block 28 is applied to the end surface 29 of the rod 17 vigorously enough to be in contact with the entire surface 29 except the annular outer part, the exhaust air does not disperse. , for its exit, that very narrow openings.
The necking of the recessed parts is further produced by a bulge of the block 28 in these recessed parts, in the area of the end 29 which is in engagement with the block 28.
When the carriage is moving at the maximum speed when the shock-absorbing mechanism comes into action, the rod 17 can penetrate far enough into the block 28 to deform it sufficiently so that all, or substantially all of the recess 30 is closed, thus temporarily preventing the escape, however slow, of air, through channel 24 out of the dash-pot cylinder. There then occurs a slight rebound of the carriage, insufficient to prevent its subsequent positioning in the correct position by the positioning devices (not shown), which causes a separation of the valve parts 28 and 29 sufficient to partially uncover the 'obviously 30,
thus allowing air to escape at a regulated speed.
When the end 29 of the rod 17 engages the block 28 while the carriage is moving at a relatively low speed, such as during a short stroke, the end 29 does not penetrate as far into the block 28, but it only goes as far as the position indicated by the dotted lines 32 in FIG. 2. The diameter of the area of the end 29 which engages with the elastic block 28 is therefore less than when the parts were engaged in the case of the carriage moving at high speed; the exposed, or free, parts of the recess 30 are larger and the exit of the exhaust air between the valve parts is less limited.
As a result, the air which is in the chamber of the cylinder will give less resistance to the bending displacement of the plunger 14 and the shock absorbing mechanism will exert a less retarding effect on the carriage.
Whatever the speed of the carriage when the valve parts 29 and 28 come into engagement, said parts will cooperate in such a way as to initially allow a relatively small exhaust of air, followed by a progressively less limited exhaust. This is due to the gradual self-healing action of the rubber valve piece 28, after the initial slowing down of the carriage, such that the recess 30 gradually opens. As a result, the air in the dash-pot cylinder provides progressively decreasing resistance to the continued travel of the carriage and, as a result, the driver can move the carriage completely to the desired limit position.
