Infrared radiation device The present invention relates to an infrared radiation device, in particular for heating and drying, comprising a distribution chamber provided with means for introducing a mixture of combustible gas and combustion air, this chamber comprising at least one wall made of refractory ceramic material in at least one part of which orifices are provided for the passage of said gas mixture.
In known devices of this type, the combustion of the gas mixture passing through the orifices formed in the refractory wall occurs at the outer surface of the latter, which is brought to high temperature, generating the desired radiation.
The apparatus according to the invention is characterized in that the face of the wall of refractory ceramic material opposite the distribution chamber limits a combustion chamber limited, on the other hand, by a perforated screen made of a metal. resistant to at least 1100 C and having openings for the evacuation of burnt gases, openings whose number and dimensions are such that the free passage section of these openings is equal to at least half of the total surface of the screen, the distance between this screen and the ceramic wall being between 2 and 10 mm.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a top view, with partial bri sure, of the first embodiment. Fig. 2 is a section, along line II-II, of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front view of an element forming part of the apparatus of FIGS. 1 and 2. FIG. 4 is similar to FIG. 3, but relates to a variant.
Fig. 5 is a schematic section of another embodiment.
Fig. 6 is a section of a third embodiment.
Fig. 7 is similar to FIG. 6, but relates to an alternative construction of the apparatus of FIG. 6.
Fig. 8 is a detail view showing part of an apparatus similar to that of FIG. 7. FIG. 9 is a schematic sectional view of another embodiment.
Each of the embodiments shown in the drawings comprises a radiating combustion chamber 1 delimited, on the one hand, by an incandescent perforated screen 2 allowing the evacuation of the burnt gases and, on the other hand, by walls made of ceramic material. refractory of low thermal conductivity. Part of these walls constitutes a divider for the gas mixture designated by 3. This divider is pierced with a large number of small orifices 6.
The gas and air enter the device through an air and fuel gas mixer 4 of a known type. A gas mixture is thus formed in the distribution chamber 5. This mixture passes through the divider 3 through the passages formed in the orifices 6. The mixture then passes into the combustion chamber 1 which comprises, in addition to the divider, ceramic walls. solid refractories, such as 7.
The perforated screen 2 is made of a refractory metal resistant to at least 1100 ° C., for example nickel-chromium. It is possible to use nickel-chromium wires 9 of approximately 1 mm in diameter and interweave them by separating them from each other by approximately 3 mm, which makes it possible to form orifices 8. A screen of very low thickness. This thickness must however be compatible with the required strength. The ratio of the total section thus offered to the passage of the burnt gases, and therefore the total section of the orifices 8, to that of the screen is large and is in any case greater than 0.5. In this way not only the screen offers wide passages for the evacuation of the burnt gases, but also allows the radiation of the ceramic walls of the combustion chamber 1 to pass.
This screen, being moreover incandescent, radiates towards the outside as well as towards the inside, which increases the temperature of the ceramic walls of the combustion chamber and consequently increases the radiation towards the outside of these latter walls. .
The combustion chamber has a very shallow depth of the order of 2 to 10 mm; in fact the perforated screen 2 is placed at the average level of the tops of the cones of the flames exiting the orifices 6 of the divider 3. The perforated screen 2 thus takes advantage of the maximum temperature of the flame.
The orifices 8 of the perforated screen 2 have dimensions such that they allow a flow rate of the gas mixture which is lower than that of the propagation of the flame. Therefore, under operating conditions, combustion always takes place inside the combustion chamber. As happens in a Davy lamp, when the device described is lit, combustion first takes place outside the combustion chamber 1.
However, as soon as the screen reaches the gas ignition temperature, a flashback occurs and the combustion stabilizes in the combustion chamber 1 thanks to the choice of various dimensions which ensure the desired ratios between the speeds of flow of the gas mixture and the rate of flame propagation. Indeed, the orifices 6 of the divider 3 have such a cross section and are in number such that the speed of passage of the gas mixture through the divider is greater than the speed of propagation of the flames.
The thickness of the divider is obviously a function of its thermal conductivity and is chosen so that the face delimiting the distribution chamber 5 is not brought to a temperature high enough to ignite the gas mixture.
The infrared radiation device can be made in several different forms. There is shown in FIGS. 1 to 4 a device with a flat openwork screen. The combustion chamber 1 is here delimited by the divider 3 which is also in the form of a plate and which has dimensions similar to those of the screen. This plate is arranged parallel to the screen. The solid walls 7 are formed by a frame of refractory ceramic material which surrounds the plate forming the divider 3 and exceeds it by a height substantially equal to the depth of the combustion chamber.
The perforated screen 2 rests freely on the walls 7 and is held thereon by a metal frame 10 which cooperates with the refractory frame forming the walls 7 and is secured to the combustion chamber 1 by screwed lugs 11. on the cast iron frame 12 which is integral with the walls of the distribution chamber 5.
The plate forming the divider 3 is made of refractory ceramic plates designated by 13. One of these plates has been shown on a larger scale in FIG. 3 where we see the orifices 6 which are cylindrical. In fig. 4 shows, on a larger scale, a plate 13, the orifices 6 of which are in the form of slots.
In fig. 5, there is also shown a device with a flat perforated screen, but this time the divider 3 constitutes the side walls of the combustion chamber 1, the wall pa is aligned with the perforated screen 2 and designated by 7 being made of a solid material . The embodiment of FIG. 5 finds its application in radiating ramps of small width and great length. The orifices 6 are horizontal or oblique. The combustion chamber has a narrow width, so that the cones of the flames can touch the screen 2.
Figs. 6 to 9 relate to embodiments in which the partitioning chamber 5 is central and is limited by the refractory ceramic walls which were previously designated by 3 and 7. To avoid any confusion, these walls will now be designated by 14, the orifices 6 being drilled in at least some parts of these walls. The combustion chamber 1 is here formed between the walls 14 and the perforated screen 2, the latter enveloping the walls 14.
The distribution and combustion chambers can be cylindrical or prismatic, they then have the same axis and are limited by concentric or parallel surfaces. It is also possible to provide spherical distribution and combustion chambers as can be seen in FIG. 1, these chambers also being concentric.
In fig. 6, there is shown cylindrical walls 14 in which are drilled holes 6 which are also cylindrical and whose axes are normal to that of the walls 14. At the two ends of the walls 14 are provided spans 15 in one of which is introduced a cap 16 hermetically closing, <B> de </B> so as to suitably limit the distribution and combustion chambers.
The perforated screen 2 is cylindrical and its assembly, as in the case of FIGS. 1 to 4, is secured so as to allow its free expansion. The screen 2 is not rigidly associated with the openings 15, but can move relative to the latter by approximately 3 to 4 mm. The screen is retained by metal frames 17 which play the same role as the frame 10 of FIGS. 1 to 4.
In the apparatus of FIG. 7, the walls 14 are replaced by a stack of washers 18 made of refractory ceramic material. To form the orifices 6, depressions designated here by 19 are provided in one of the end faces of each washer. When, by stacking, the smooth face of one of the washers is placed against the face of the neighboring washer which has the depressions 19, the passages 6 are formed between the two washers which can be similar to the slots in FIG. 4. The washers are held between two cheeks 20 of refractory ceramic material which replace the openings 15 of Fig. 6.
The set of washers 18 and cheeks 20 is made rigid by assembly rods 21 provided with collars 22, which bear on the inner surface of washers 18 and prevent any longitudinal or transverse displacement of the latter. It should be noted that the rods 21 with their collars 22 could be replaced by one or more rods of my tage provided with fins and providing the same functions.
In fig. 8, washers 18 have been shown, one end face of which has projections, such as 23, which make it possible to maintain a determined and very small spacing, which is at most about 0.7 mm, between two neighboring washers, which allows once again to constitute passages which have the same function as the orifices 6.
It is obviously possible to provide the depressions 19 (FIG. 7) on the two end faces of the washers 18, these depressions being or not being brought opposite one another during assembly. Likewise, the projections 23 could be made on the two end faces of the washers 18. It would also be possible to provide on one or both end faces of each washer 18, depressions 19 and projections 23.
The devices described can be supplied at low pressure and allow the use of town gas or gas cylinders, such as butane, these cylinders being provided with a tensioner.
The devices of fig. 6 to 9 can be placed in a parabolic reflector; the latter may have an opening such that its focal eccentricity is small, the calorific rays emitted therefore being able then to be appreciably parallel.
