Method of assembling tubular elements of ceramic material, apparatus for carrying out this method and assembly of tubular elements obtained by this method The present invention comprises a method of assembling tubular elements of ceramic material one by one. with the others, an apparatus for the implementation of this process and the assembly obtained by this process.
To make pipe pipe assemblies made of stoneware or porcelain, these pipes are sometimes fitted at their ends with conical reinforcements on which the fixing flanges rest. This system has the serious drawback of requiring pipe elements of predetermined length during manufacture and therefore lacks flexibility during installation.
To overcome this drawback, pipes are sometimes produced in cylindrical tubes, the length of which is adjusted on site by cutting and sealing the flanges at the ends. The sealing of the flanges is a delicate operation. When the intermediate medium used is cement, it takes a certain time before the optimum resistance is reached: In addition, when tightening, significant localized stresses can be caused by a poor distribution of the forces due to the lack of plasticity and elasticity of cement. These stresses can lead to ceramic ruptures.
The method according to the invention eliminates these drawbacks. It consists in molding at the end of the elements to be assembled, the length of which is adjusted on site by cutting, an extra thickness of thermosetting resin adhering to the ceramic. It is possible to obtain by means of these moldable resins without pressure,
extra thicknesses of complicated shape with a superficial finish and very high dimensional precision, at the same time as the strong adhesive power which characterizes them makes them one with their support.
The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, various phases of particular implementations of the method which the invention comprises and a particular embodiment of an apparatus for its implementation.
Figs. 1 to 3 are views in elevation with partial section, before their final assembly, of ceramic tubular elements.
Fig. 4 schematically represents an embodiment of the apparatus allowing the implementation of the method according to the invention. In fig. 1, ducting elements 1 and 2 made of ceramic material are provided at their. ends of stops 3 in thermosetting resin, for example in araldite (as deposited) against which the male and female nuts 4 and 5 may come to rest, threaded on the tubes 1 and 2 prior to the molding of the stops.
In fig. 2, the pipe elements 1 and 2 made of ceramic material are provided with abutments 6 of frustoconical shape, the large base being directed towards the end of the tubes, on which the threaded flanges 7 come to rest on the tubes prior to molding. dice stops.
Fig. 3 illustrates a preferred embodiment, according to which the stops 10 molded at the end of the tubes 1 and 2 are provided with threads onto which a nut or a sleeve 11 can be screwed, making it possible to produce the usual joints in the technique of pipelines. metallic.
This thread can be cut from the excess thickness previously molded or come directly by molding. The stop-stop thus formed can level the elements of the tube, be set back or protrude, so that the contact of the assembled elements takes place by the previously upright faces of the tube or by the stop itself with or without the interposition of an elastic seal, the material of the stopper itself exhibiting an elasticity which is not negligible.
The very low modulus of elasticity of these resins with respect to the modulus of metals means that the assembly by threaded stopper and metal ring or nut works in excellent conditions because all the threads of the stopper are stressed and not only some as is the case between metal screw and nut.
Fig. 4 shows an apparatus for molding the stopper at the end of the pipe element.
This device is essentially constituted by a box 15, the internal profile of which corresponds to: the external profile which is to be given to the extra thickness. In this case, this profile is a thread. The box is provided with an electrical winding 16 allowing it to be heated, a dry thermostatic device shown at 17 makes it possible to maintain the required temperature.
To achieve the extra thickness, all you have to do is cap the end of the ceramic tube to be joined with the box previously coated with a silicone grease, fill this box with the powder to be polymerized possibly containing a filler, connect the current to heat the box to the desired temperature, maintain it for the required time, then remove the box, in the example described, by unscrewing it. The polymerized resin is integral with the tube and does not adhere to. the box previously greased. If the mandé profile does not allow demoulding, the box can be produced according to a known technique with sub-parts.
It has sometimes been observed that the differences in the shrinkage of the resin and of the ceramic support during the cooling following the polymerization operation caused stresses such that, when the ceramic-resin bonding took place over fairly large surfaces, splinters ceramic could be removed. To overcome this drawback, it may be recommended to make the resin adhere to its support only on a part of the contact surface by partially coating the latter prior to molding with a silicone grease, for example.
In this way, it is possible to give the adhesion surface the shape and importance that one wishes in relation to the contact surface. Thus, for example, the molded stopper can adhere to the pipe element only by a few annular zones or by a helical zone.
This difference in the shrinkage of the polymerizable material, araldite for example, and of the ceramic support, causes radial compressive forces in the ceramic, acting as a hooping and axial compressive forces resulting in protrusions which can lift and tear off ceramic shards.
The axial forces in the ceramic are eliminated or greatly reduced while maintaining the favorable hooping forces by interposing between the ceramic support and the molding allowance made of polymerizable material, a layer of a material capable of being plastically deformed.
In a particularly recommended implementation, a metal layer is sprayed, according to the process known under the name shoopisation, at the end of the ceramic tube, before the latter receives the extra thickness of poly merisable material.
This metallization can be carried out with lead, copper, zinc or any other suitable metal. The plasticity of this metallic layer may derive from the specific plasticity of the metal or from an apparent plasticity due to the fine grainy texture of the metallic deposit.
The radial forces caused by the withdrawal of the extra thickness of polymerizable material increase by shrinking and tightening the adhesion of the metal layer to the ceramic material, the adhesion of the metal layer to the polymerizable material being ensured by bonding: axial compression is exerted in the intermediate metallized layer and is absorbed by the deformation of this layer, by creep or rearrangement of the grains which constitute it.
Thanks to the presence of this layer, the axial contraction during cooling after polymerization can occur without any tearing of the ceramic material.
In order to prevent the clamping forces of the polymerizable extra thickness from translating into tangential tensile forces greater than the resistance of the polymerizable material, this material can be reinforced by a fibrous winding with high mechanical resistance; this reinforcement can be produced with a ribbon of glass fabric or by a winding of metal wires such as a coil spring coated in the polymerizable mass.
