Tool holder The present invention relates to a tool holder in which the active end of the tip of the tool is adjustable, this tool being clamped directly in a mounted vice, so as to be able to turn and slide in height on a support intended to be fixed on the carriage of a machine tool, this vice being able to be blocked in a desired position on this support.
The tool holder which is the subject of the invention is characterized by the fact that it comprises height-adjustable stop means which, after adjustment, are intended to serve as a stop at the active end of the tool when, after release of the vice, it slides vertically.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the tool holder which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view with partial cutaway.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of FIG. 1. FIG. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view from below of FIG. 1.
The tool holder shown comprises a split neck 1 carrying jaws 2 and 3 for clamping a tool, for example, a chisel 4. The jaw 3 is manufactured with the collar 1 and the jaw 2 is movable and constantly biased against the end of a tightening screw 5 provided with a handle 6 for operating, by two tension springs 7 and 8 hooked at one end to the collar 1 by a horizontal plug 9 and at the other end to the movable jaw 2 by a pin 10. Cylindrical rods 11 serve to guide the movable jaw 2.
The collar 1 is mounted to rotate and to slide axially on a cylindrical column 12, intended to be fixed on a machine tool carriage, only the upper face 13 of the carriage being shown. The column 12 is fixed by means of a bolt 14 not sant in the column, through a hole 15, and onto which a nut 16 is screwed.
A locking mechanism makes it possible to block the collar 1 on the column 12. This mechanism comprises a screw 17 with an operating handle 18 serving to tighten towards each other two flanges 19 and 20 produced with the collar 1 , the flange 19 being threaded to receive the screw 17 and the flange 20 being freely traversed by the latter.
The tool holder described further comprises a stop device capable of being brought opposite the chisel 4 in order to adjust its height as will be described below. This stop device comprises a bent rod 21 pivotally mounted in the column 12 and a stop piece 22, removably fixed by means of a locking screw not shown on the free end of the rod 21, against a flange 23 integral of this rod. The stop piece 22 has two flat bearing faces, 24 and 25, located in the same horizontal plane, 180 from each other with respect to the axis of the free end of the rod 21.
Face 24 looks upwards and face 25 looks down; the face 25 is intended to come into contact selectively with the active end of the chisel 4 (as shown in FIG. 1), the face 24 is intended to come into contact with a chisel 4, the active end of which would be disposed towards the low.
Instead of a bent rod 21 in one piece, one could provide a rod in two parts mounted telescopically and blocked at the desired length by a screw.
The end of the rod 21, mounted in the column 12, has a groove 26 coming into engagement with a retaining member constituted by a bar 27 made of spring steel. The groove 26 is interrupted by two straight flanks 28 formed in the end of the rod 21 (FIG. 5) to allow the rod 21 to be released from the retaining bar 27.
The collar 1 is biased towards the top of the column 12 by a compression spring 29 mounted in a sleeve 30 and one end of which rests against the bottom of a bore 31 formed in the collar 1 and the other end of which is s 'supported on a bearing surface 32 of the sleeve 30, this sleeve resting itself against the upper face 13 of the carriage of the machine tool. A knurled screw 33 (fig. 3) having a smooth cylindrical end 34 intended to bear against the sleeve 30 is screwed into a hole drilled obliquely in the neck 1. By tightening the screw 33, the sleeve is blocked. 30 in the bore 31 and the action of the spring 29 is suppressed.
The collar 1 also carries means for folding back its angular position, relative to the column, these means comprising a threaded sleeve 35 provided with a knurled head 36, a second sleeve 37 telescopically mounted in the sleeve 35 and whose conical tip 38 cooperates with grooves 39 of V-profile, formed in the column 12 along generatrices corresponding to different angular positions of the collar 1. A helical compression spring 40 is supported, on the one hand , against the bottom of the socket 35 and, on the other hand, against the bottom of the socket 37.
In the position shown in FIG. 3, the sleeve 37 can slide against the action of the res out 40 and the tip 38 can pass from one groove 39 to the other by producing a click when the collar 1. is rotated around the column 12, this click allowing to identify the different angular positions of the collar relative to the column.
By tightening the threaded sleeve 35 fully, the sleeve 37 abuts against the bottom of the sleeve 35, the action of the spring 40 is suppressed and the point 38 is blocked in the corresponding groove 39. The grooves 39 correspond to various values. 'a graduation from 0 to 90 engraved in the upper face of column 12 opposite a fixed mark engraved in the upper edge of collar 1.
The tool holder described makes it possible to quickly exchange the chisel clamped between the jaws and ensures the clamping thereof, without it being necessary to have recourse to shims, or to removable tool-holder jaws, nor to use a wrench. The chisel can be brought quickly to the desired dimension, this being given by the stop which is adjusted once and for all according to the height of the points of a lathe, for example. When the tool 4 has been adjusted to the desired height by placing in contact against the corresponding bearing surface of the stop 22, the latter is moved away from the chisel by pivoting of the bent rod 21 in the support column 12. In blocking the sleeve 30 by means of the screw 34, the spring 29 no longer acts and the collar 1 can be rotated by any angle without the height of the chisel changing.
When the sleeve 30 is released, the spring 29 is released and exerts a thrust against the support face 13, the collar 1 being urged upwards to bring the chisel against the stop 22. To turn parts such as, for example , molds with several dimensions to be kept rigorously, the folding means make it possible to return to the same position from an established dimension. Thanks to the stop 22, the chisel is centered in height to about 1/100 of a mm, regardless of its wear or the shape of its shank in the case of interchangeable chisels and the stop allows, moreover, to adjust to about 4/100 of a mm near the length of the chisel passing the jaws.
The tool holder described can also be used on machines other than lathes, for example, on leveling machines or on filing vices. Although the tool holder described comprises the combination: a stop device, spring means urging the tie collar 1 and locating means for adjusting the angular positions of the collar, this tool holder could comprise only one or two of these elements.
