welches Mischpoly mer auf je 15 aromatische Kerne an den aro- matisclien Kernen mindestens 1 Halogenalkyl- Olruppe der Formel Cli11211X, in weleher n eine ganze Zahl von 1-1 und X Chlor oder Brom bezeichnen, trägt, mit einem tertiären Amin, dessen Substituenten Alkyl-;
B. Ozonide, Peroxyde, beispielsweise Acetylperoxyd, Lauroylperoxyd, Stearyl- peroxyd, Stearoylperoxy d, tert.
Methoden der Chlormethylierung sind beispielsweise in Or- ganic Reactions , Bd.I, Kap.<B>3,</B> Seite 63 ff. (lohn Wiley and Sons, Inc., N.Y.C., 1942) beschrieben.
B. Natriumhy droxyd, ver gleichbar.
Process for the preparation of insoluble anion exchange resins The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of insoluble anion exchange resins.
A group of new anion exchange resins has been found which consists of the reaction products of a tertiary amine with an insoluble, crosslinked copolymer. an aromatic monovinyl hydrocarbon and an aromatic divinyl hydrocarbon which has haloalkyl groups of the formula -cnH2nX, in which X denotes a chlorine or bromine atom, -CnI-I2n denotes an alkylene group and n denotes an integer from 1 to 4.
These anion exchange resins are therefore insoluble, aromatic, crosslinked vinyl copolymers with substituent groups of the general formula
EMI0001.0015
in which il is an integer 1 to 4, R1, R2 and R3 represent hydrocarbon radicals iaid ST an anion, e.g. B. a chloride, sulfate or hydroxyl ion, referred to.
These insoluble anion exchange resins can thereby be obtained; that an insoluble, infusible copolymer of an aromatic monovinyl hydrocarbon and an aromatic divinyl hydrocarbon containing at least one haloalkyl group of the formula -CnH2nX @ in which n is an integer with a value of 1-4 and X is chlorine on 15 aromatic nuclei or refer to bromine, contains, reacts with a tertiary amine.
In the preparation of the anion exchange resins defined above, an insoluble mixed polymer is first produced by adding a monovinyl hydrocarbon, such as. B. styrene or vinyl naphthalene, with a divinyl hydrocarbon; such as B. divinylbenzene, is mixed polymerized.
Then halo alkyl groups are introduced into the insoluble copolymer he obtained by using the insoluble copolymer conveniently in the form of small particles with haloalkylating agents, such as.
B. a mixture of an aldehyde and a hydrohalic acid (for example paraformaldehyde and hydrochloric acid) or a dihaloalkane and a Friedl-Crafts catalyst (for example, ethylene dichloride and aluminum chloride) or a halogen ether and aluminum chloride, for the reaction brings. The haloalkylated copolymer obtained is then reacted with a tertiary amine, an insoluble, crosslinked, polymeric, quaternary salt being obtained.
The salt can be converted into the quaternary ammonium hydroxide by washing with an alkali metal hydroxide.
The end product, an insoluble, polymeric, quaternary ammonium hydroxide, has an extremely strong basicity, on the order of magnitude of the basicity of sodium hydroxide. When used for the treatment of acidic liquids and gases, the resin exchanges its hydroxyl groups for the anions contained in the gas or in the liquid; in this way the acidity of the gas or the liquid can be eliminated.
To produce the misclip polymer, an aromatic monovinyl hydrocarbon is first polymerized together finely with an aromatic divinyl carbon dehydrogenator. Examples of suitable hydrocarbons in the first category are:
Styrene, o-, m- and p-methylstyrene, o-, m- and p-Äthvl- styrene, vinylnaplithalin, vinylanthracene, a met.hyistyrene and the homologues of these compounds. As Diviny oil hydrocarbons can nen z.
B. Divinylbenzene, Div inyltoluole, Di- vinylnapht.haline, Divirlyl-ethz-lbenzenes and Divinylxylenes can be used.
To produce the mixed polymer, a larger amount of the monovinyl hydrocarbon than the diviny hydrocarbon is used, in mol%, so that of the total number of hydrocarbon molecules used, more than half consists of monovinyl hydrocarbon molecules.
The vinyl vinyl hydrocarbon preferably makes up 60-99.9 mol% of the total mixture of vinyl vinyl hydrogens. The amount of divinyl hydrocarbon is. so with preferably 0.1-10 o of genliselies. The latter causes hydrocarbon. a cross-linking of the Ilisehpolyiners, whereby the latter insolubility, complexity and hardness are given.
It has been shown that even if this crosslinking hydrocarbon is used for less than 0.1 h, a copolymer is obtained which, although it may be swellable in certain organic liquids, is insoluble.
As the amount of crosslinking divinyl carbon increases, the reaction product becomes denser and is consequently more difficult to haloalkylate. Copolymers of a crosslinking divinyl hydrocarbon and a mixture of 2 or more monovinyl hydrocarbons can also be useful.
Examples of such combinations are: styrene, ethyl vinyl benzene and divinyl benzene; Styrene, vinylnaphthalene and divinylbenzene; ni-methyl styrene, styrene and divinylbenzene; Styrene and divinylbenzene.
The subject of the patent is a process for the production of insoluble, quaternary ammonium groups-containing anion exchangers, which have the property of exchanging the anions for hydroxyl ions in aqueous solutions of acids or salts.
This process is characterized in that it consists of particles of an insoluble, inaccessible mixed polymer from a mixture of 60-99.9% by weight of at least one aromatic monovinyl hydrocarbon and 0.1-10% by weight of an aromatic divinyl hydrocarbon ,
which mixed polymer for every 15 aromatic nuclei on the aromatic nuclei has at least 1 haloalkyl group of the formula Cli11211X, in which n denotes an integer from 1-1 and X denotes chlorine or bromine, with a tertiary amine whose substituents are alkyl -;
Aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicals are brought to reaction and the reaction product obtained by reaction with an alkali leads to a quaternary ammonium hydroxide.
The insoluble hydrocarbon mixed polyiners can be prepared according to various known methods. Thus, the monomers can be mixed and then polymerized in bulk or the monomers can be emulsified or otherwise suspended in a liquid medium and then polymerized. The emulsion polymerization and the suspension polymerization,
in which the monomers first in a liquid which does not dissolve the monomers, such as e.g. B. water or saline, suspended and then heated. stirred and copolymerized are by far preferred, since when these methods are used, hard copolymers in the form of spheroids, spheres or beads are obtained and the size of these particles can be regulated and controlled. In this way, particles can be produced with part sizes such that they pass through sieves with clear mesh widths of 0.044-4.0 mm.
The extremely fine particles, about 40-150 microns in diameter, are particularly valuable for certain new methods of ion absorption. In addition, very fine or porous particles can be halogen-alkylated and aminated faster and better than larger and / or denser particles.
A variant of the suspension polymerization method, which allows very favorable results to be achieved, consists in suspending and polymerizing a solution of the monomers in a chemically inert solvent, which is immiscible with the suspension liquid, and subsequently leaching out the enclosed solvent, Drying or distilling removed from the hard polymerized particles. This ses process provides resin particles that are more porous because of the escape of the solvent and easier to react because of their porosity.
However, one can also make large pieces or blocks of the polymer and then crush them prior to haloalkylation.
The polymerization of the vinyl compounds is expediently accelerated by the addition of catalysts which supply oxygen. Examples of such catalysts are: organic peroxidic substances, such as.
B. ozonides, peroxides, for example acetyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, stearyl peroxide, stearoyl peroxy d, tert. -Butylh, # droperoxide, benzoyl peroxide, perbenzoic acid tert. - butyl ester, perphthalic acid - di - tert-butyl ester,
Di-tert-butyl peroxide and the barium salt of tert ..- Butylhydroperoxyds, to organic substances, such as barium peroxide, sodium peroxide, hydrogen peroxide and the so-called per-salts, z. B. the water-soluble perborates, persulfates and perchlorates. The catalysts are z. B. in amounts of 0.1-2.0 / o, based on the weight of the material to be polymerized, used.
The haloalkylation of the insoluble, infusible, crosslinked copolymer can be carried out in various ways. For example, the mixed polymer can be reacted with a mixture of an Alde hyd and hydrochloric acid or a mixture of a dichloride and a Friedl-Crafts catalyst.
Methods of chloromethylation are described, for example, in Organic Reactions, Vol. I, Chapter 3, page 63 ff. (John Wiley and Sons, Inc., N.Y.C., 1942). The degree of halogen alkylation can be determined by halogen analysis.
The amination of the haloalkylated mixed polymer with the tertiary amine is preferably carried out in such a way that the amine is added to the haloalkylated mixed polymer while the latter is suspended in a liquid which is a solvent for the amine and is stirred. The mixture can be allowed to react at room temperature or preferably at elevated temperatures, whereupon the resin, which contains quaternary ammonium salt groups, is freed from the liquid.
It has. Proven to be advantageous to allow the haloalkylated copolymer to swell with the amine before the reaction. This swelling facilitates the amination reaction and can be brought about by soaking the copolymer in a suitable liquid. Aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene are most suitable for this purpose. The volume of the polymer often increases by an amount of up to 100%.
The extent of the swelling depends to a large extent on the degree of crosslinking that occurred during the manufacture of the mixed polymer used as the starting material. In general, the swelling is inversely proportional to the degree of crosslinking.
The quaternary ammonium salt can easily be converted into the quaternary ammonium hydroxide by washing with an alkali metal hydroxide.
<I> Examples </I> A. A 1 liter three-necked round bottom flask equipped with a thermometer, mechanical stirrer and reflux condenser was charged with 400 cm 3 of water and 34 cm 3 of a 1.5% aqueous magnesium silicate dispersion. Stirring was started and a mixture consisting of 99 g of styrene and 1, g of divine benzene and containing 1 g of benzoyl peroxide in dissolved form was added to the contents of the flask.
The stirred mixture was then heated to 90 ° C., kept at this temperature for 11/2 hours and then heated for another 11/2 hours at reflux temperature. The reaction mixture was then cooled to room temperature. The solid spheroids of the mixed polymer were separated from the liquid by decanting and filtering, air-dried and finally oven-dried for 2 hours at 125 C.
Similarly, mixed polymers with a higher content became. made of divinylbenzene.
B. 50 g of the mixed polymer beads prepared according to A were placed in a 1 liter three-necked round bottom flask equipped with a thermometer, mechanical stirrer and reflux condenser.
This amount corresponded to 0.5 mol of styrene in the form of a crosslinked mixed polymer. 100 g (1.25 mol) of chloromethyl ether of the formula CH3-0-CH2C1 were added, whereupon the mixture was left to stand for 15 minutes at room temperature. During this time, the mixed polymer beads swelled up.
The mixture was here diluted to 115 cubic meters of petroleum ether (bp 30-60 ° C.) and then stirred. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0 C by means of a bath of ice and salt and then, over the course of one hour, 30 g (0.23 mol) of anhydrous, powdered aluminum chloride were added in small portions Was stirred at 0 C hours.
500 cm3 of ice water were then slowly added in order to decompose the excess aluminum chloride and chloromethyl ether. The resulting mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and then filtered. The pearls were first air-dried, then washed several times with water and finally dried in an oven at 125 ° C. for 2 hours.
The beads were analyzed to have a chlorine content of 21.97%.
C. A three-necked round-bottomed flask with a capacity of 500 cubic meters and equipped with a stirrer, a reflux condenser, a thermometer and a gas inlet tube was charged with 115 cm3 of benzene and 50 g of the chlorine methylated beads prepared according to B. Stirring was started and the mixture was heated to reflux temperature and held at this temperature for 30 minutes. During this time the pearls swelled up. The mixture was cooled to 20 ° C. and saturated with anhydrous trimethylamine gas.
The mixture was then heated to 50-55 ° C. and held at this temperature for 4 hours while a steady stream of trimethylamine was passed through it. has been. The mixture was then cooled to room temperature and allowed to stand overnight, after which the beads were filtered off, washed twice with benzene and dried.
The dried pearls freed from benzene. were then washed for 2 hours with a 10% strength aqueous sulfuric acid solution, then washed thoroughly with water and finally put into the mold. of the quaternary ammonium hydroxide by stirring them together with a 15% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The end product was washed with water until the wash water no longer turned pink when phenolphthalein was added.
The dried beads showed a nitrogen content of 5.68% when analyzed and had a high absorption capacity for anions. They also had the physical properties suitable for their use in technical water treatment units. The beads could also be used repeatedly to absorb ions and regenerated.
Although nitrogen-containing resins with amino groups have already become known which have the ability to remove acids from gaseous or liquid substances, they differ considerably from the products obtained according to the invention; the latter are quaternary ammonium compounds and, in the form of hydroxides, are extremely strong bases that neutralize acids and break down salts. The strength of these bases is with that of an alkali metal bydroxy ds, such as.
B. sodium hydroxide, comparable. These bases are probably the first known water-insoluble, polymeric, strongly basic, quaternary ammonium compounds. The resinous products obtained according to the invention exchange ions in the hydroxyl form. For example, a hydroxyl ion of the resin can be exchanged for a chloride ion, a chloride ion for a sulfate ion, etc., the cation of the salt not being absorbed.
The resin obtained according to the invention not only reduces the avidity but is also able to remove the anions as such from salt solutions. If, for example, a sodium chloride solution is allowed to flow through a column of the resinous product obtained according to the invention in the hydroxide form, the chloride ions of the salt solution are exchanged for the hydroxyl groups of the resin, so that the liquid leaves the column as a sodium hydroxide solution. The resin can by washing with a solution of a strong base, such as.
B. sodium hydroxide, be regenerated. In addition to its chemical activity, the resin has such physical properties that it can be used and regenerated repeatedly in conventional water treatment facilities. It is further characterized in that it swells less during use in ordinary water treatment facilities than the phenolic resins currently produced in industry.
