Process for the manganese enrichment of iron melts. There is a process for producing smelting iron by melting solid ferrous materials in a basic-coated - or preferably neutral - cupola furnace which operates with more than a quantity of fuel.
the normal proportion, but can be, for example, of an inferior quality and with a preferably warm wind at around 400 C and more, in a reducing speed and as a gas generator, with production of a relatively large quantity of slag, in particular of basic slag.
It has now been recognized that, by carrying out this process under special conditions, it is possible to enrich the pig irons produced with manganese.
Based on this discovery, the present invention relates to a process for the manganese enrichment of processed iron smelts:
in a cupola with a coating, neutral or basic, characterized in that said cup is operated. cupola with a quantity of fuel greater than that strictly necessary to melt the charges, with a hot blast, in reducing speed and as a gas regenerator, with production of a large quantity of basic slag, said cupola being extended with materials containing such a pro portion of silicon that,
by adding manganiferous slibstanes and melting the whole together while simultaneously maintaining a high column of slag in the cupola, the manganese in the slag is at least partially reduced by the silicon contained in the mixture.
The maintenance in the cupola of a high column of slag, for example 60 cm and more, can be obtained by means of a continuous flow: of the slag by siphoning.
In normal cupola smelting processes, there is usually a considerable loss on ignition of manganese, which causes the manganese to pass into the slag so that it is not. so far failed to achieve a satisfactory manganese yield in the cupola.
On the other hand, it is known that in the operation of the blast furnace, an iron with a high silicon content can be enriched in manganese when this iron is treated with a molten slag containing manganese.
A reduction of the manganese by the silicon of the iron takes place, for example, according to the equation 2 MnO + Si = SiO 2 + 2 Mn; the manganese content of the cast iron therefore rises, while its silicon content falls.
In the process which is the subject of the invention, advantage is taken of this reducing action of the silicon on the manganese compounds, but by causing it in the cupola. Even by feeding the cupola with more fuel than the normal proportion, it is not certain that there is enough carbon available in the feed for manganese reduction.
This is why it is necessary for the molten iron to pass down a relatively high column of high temperature slag, in order to cause the partial reduction of the manganese contained in the slag by the silicon contained in the iron thanks to the acid. - Concurrent tion of the carbon contained in the feed, which at the same time causes excellent desulphurization.
The manganese enrichment of liquid iron, depends on the amount of charged silicon, from which it naturally results that the reduction of manganese is. limited by the amount of bx-iled silicon.
The basis of the slag is lowered somewhat, so that it is recommended to set a high value for the ratio a priori. lime-silie, by additions to a fusion bed.
The mixture can, for example, when working with coke and limestone, consist of shot, old iron containing silicon, ferro-silicon and substances containing manganese, such as, for example, Siemens slag. Martin, ores containing manganese or the like.
The present process is of a particularly favorable application when one employs as constituent of the ferrous mixture, more or less large quantities of iron rich in sulfur and high in silicon content obtained in the blast furnace by the acid or superacid smelting process, without prior desulfurization, because this cast iron constitutes at the same time a cheap carrier of silicon and that its. sulfur content plays a secondary role because of the desulfurizing action of slag.
For example, by employing a slag flow by siphoning, one achieves. keep the upper level of the slag and the height of the column of the slag in the oven, always more or less constant, (so that a determined quantity of molten slag containing manganese is always retained systematically in the the oven, the supply of fresh slag thus being able to be regulated by the flow of the slag which has reacted.
By this means there is always a relatively large amount of slag in. provision for iron, which allows to react abundantly with the slag, the iron in its nascent state., the calorific action of the large quantity of exerting slag. better thus on the iron a reinforced refining action.
By the present method, one succeeds. to enrich in manganese both cast irons which are particularly rich in silicon and, for example, steel cast irons, Tho mas and Bessemer cast irons, as well as to produce molding castings with a high manganese content, whose manganese, are greater than. 0.8 or 1 0/0.
From plias, it is possible, by the addition of manganiferous substances, to transform mixtures poor in manganese, into casting irons having a normal manganese content of 0.6 to 0.8% or to manufacture, without loss in the fire, cast iron with a normal manganese content, starting from ferrous mixtures with a normal manganese content.
