Process for improving the mechanical properties of cellulosic textiles. The applicant has already proposed a method for improving the mechanical properties of cellulose-containing textiles with the aid of ionizing radiation (Swiss patent 353.025), according to which an optionally modified cellulose-containing textile material in the absence of a modifier for the cellulose during and / or after the irradiation is heated to at least 30 C for the purpose of crosslinking carbon atoms in the molecular chains.
The irradiation of the textile material can be carried out in the presence of air or in the absence of air, e.g. in a vacuum or in an inert gas. Particularly favorable prerequisites for the crosslinking and the lowest possible degradation of the cellulose exist when the cellulose-containing textile material to be irradiated has an increased moisture content.
A method is also known for modifying the properties of fibers or films made from natural or regenerated natural polymers such as wool or cellulose or their derivatives such as cellulose acetate, according to which the material to be treated is subjected to ionizing radiation in close contact with an organic modifier .
The modifying agents are essentially unsaturated compounds which are suitable for the formation of addition polymers by vinyl polymerization, e.g. Acrylates or methacrylates. A method is also known according to which films and fabrics made of synthetic and natural polymers are subjected to ionizing particle irradiation with a very low particle energy of 15,000 to 50,000 eV in the absence of oxygen and before or during the irradiation with monomeric or polymeric organic compounds ,
e.g. Hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, etc. are brought into contact. It is also known to use cellulose, 3. term material, in particular water-soluble cellulose ethers, e.g. Methyl, ethyl or propyl cellulose, in the presence of excess water, i.e. in confines of at least 50l and preferably 907o,
based on the weight of the cellulose material, to be irradiated with a dose of 10b - 10j REP for crosslinking. It has now surprisingly been found that the improvement of the mechanical properties of cellulosic textile material with the aid of ionizing radiation can be achieved by
that an optionally modified textile material is subjected to irradiation in the absence of a modifier for cellulose and in the absence of oxygen without simultaneous or subsequent heating. The irradiation can e.g. in a vacuum or in an inert gas such as nitrogen.
It is assumed that, in contrast to irradiation in the presence of air, irradiation in a vacuum or in an inert gas in the irradiated material, due to insufficient oxygen, does not form hydroperoxide groups that first have to be converted into radicals, but rather that radicals form directly that react with each other immediately and bring about networking. For this reason there is a great advantage in terms of process technology, in that a heat treatment supporting the crosslinking process is unnecessary and the process can be carried out at room temperature.
The method according to the invention can be applied to all types of textile material, in particular flat structures. Primarily woven, knitted or non-woven fabrics made from native cellulose such as cotton or from regenerated cellulose or such flat structures containing fibers from natural and regenerated cellulose are possible. The process can, however, also be used on textile yarns, threads or threads.
The ionizing radiation is primarily gamma or X-ray radiation; the effect according to the invention can, however, also be achieved with the aid of beta rays. The radiation source for gamma radiation can e.g. Co 60, Cs137 or cleavage products of U235 are used.
The textile material can e.g. Total doses between 103 and 107 Roentgen received. The duration of the irradiation can be between a few seconds and several hours. Topochemically modified textile material can also be subjected to the irradiation, in which case significantly more active groups are formed than when the non-topochemically modified textile material is irradiated.
It can e.g. the modification of the textile material d = h a purely chemical reaction with acrylic, methacrylic, crotonyl or room acid or allyl derivatives with the formation of corresponding esters, ethers or acetals.
Furthermore, the modification of the cellulose-containing textile material by means of unsaturated compounds, such as z.13. Acrylriitrile in the presence of alkalis with the introduction of side groups into the cellulose chains, which can be easily activated by the irradiation.
Furthermore, the textile material is impregnated with ethyleneimine compounds and this dilr @ cli heating to over 100 ° C in the presence of e-.r-@eo acidic Kzt-1, sl., Tor @ s has been brought to reaction be.
Finally, it is also possible to irradiate cellulosic textile material which, by treatment with an aromatic compound which is in the o, n or p position to the junction of the cellulose chain, bears an aliphatic substituent with a secondary carbon atom, in particular p-isopropylberizo-chloride , was changed topocheinically.
The esters or ethers formed can easily be activated on the isopropyl group. It is also possible to modify cellulose with methanesulfonyl chloride. The resulting ether increases the resistance of the cellulose to degradation by irradiation to a large extent and the treated textile material can be exposed to a much higher radiation dose than the untreated material.
Let it.; Icri, therefore, form essentially irie # r: tive groups during irradiation. The invention is explained using the following exemplary embodiments nzhE: r:
