Method and device for measuring small gas pressures.
The invention relates to a process for measuring small gas pressures, in particular for measuring pressures in a vacuum and high vacuum, ie from about 10 to 10-7 Torr and below, and to a device for carrying out this method.
Various pressure-dependent processes have already been used to determine, in particular continuous determination, small pressures. In contrast to the measurement of normal pressures or higher pressures, i.e. of the order of magnitude of an atmosphere and more, a direct measurement of very small pressures is hardly possible any more. One must use the changes in auxiliary quantities that are amplified by the energy supplied from outside.
With the known compression manometers - for example with the McLeod manometer, the energy supplied is compression work, while with the thermal conduction manometers heat is supplied to part of the measuring system and the pressure dependence of the thermal conduction capacity of the gas at pressures at which the mean free path is greater than the vessel dimensions is used for the measurement.
The vacuum gauges based on the radiometer principle are still based on the supply of thermal energy and use the thermal molecular pressure that acts on a movable sensing element between a cool and a heated surface The supply of mechanical energy, for example, sets a disk or a quartz thread in an oscillating motion and this is slowed down by the external friction. The size of the damping caused is pressure-dependent, which means that the pressure can be measured.
In the Langmuirsehen molecular manometer, the internal gas friction is used to transmit a tangential impulse of motion from a disk set in rotation to a second disk placed close above it, serving as a sensing element. The transmitted angular momentum is pressure-dependent, which enables pressure measurement. Finally, the ionization manometers make use of the pressure dependency of the ionization of the gases. The ionization manometers with radioactive source for ionization are based on the same principle.
All these previously known measuring instruments have the disadvantage that they can only be used in certain limited pressure ranges, so that one is forced to use several measuring instruments for continuous measurement in a large interval, for example from atmospheric pressure down to the fine vacuum. Furthermore, individual technical procedures prohibit the use of certain instruments. For example, it may be advisable not to use heated, i.e. heat conduction manometers, in order to avoid the dissociation of gases.
Furthermore, gas discharges could have a disruptive effect on certain processes, so that the use of ionization manometers is prohibited in such cases.
The method for pressure measurement according to the present invention consists in the fact that in the room, the gas pressure of which is to be measured, a conveyor wheel equipped with air sensors, rotatable about its axis of symmetry, is set in rotation at a constant speed and one is thereby arranged next to it and around the same Symmetry axis rotatable sensing element generates a flow whose component falling in the direction of the shortest connection between the conveyor wheel and sensing element is greater at every point than the component falling in a direction perpendicular to the mentioned direction, and that the torque transferred to the sensing element can be compensated by a counterforce and draws conclusions about the prevailing Druelt from its size.
The device for carrying out this method is characterized by a conveyor wheel, which can be rotated about its axis of symmetry and is equipped with air fans, to generate a gas flow in the room, the gas pressure of which is to be measured, by a wheel rotatable about the same axis of symmetry to receive the impulse carried along by the gas flow generated suitable sensing element, by means for compensating and displaying the movement impulse picked up by the sensing element and by a vacuum-tight envelope suitable for connection to the room whose truck is to be measured.
Conveyor wheels known per se can serve to generate such flows. Centrifugal wheels or propellers are preferably used, depending on whether one wants to generate a radial flow or a longitudinal flow. The sensing element can be arranged on the suction side or also on the pressure side of the flow-generating conveyor wheel or the propeller wheel.
The sensing element for receiving the impulse carried along by the flow can be designed like a turbine or a propeller, depending on whether the flow is radial or longitudinal. In any case, preference should be given to such a design in which the distances do not change during the measurement.
To display the pressure, either at a constant speed of the conveyor wheel, the angular momentum acting on the sensing element can be generated by the directional force of the suspension, for example a torsion thread made of quartz, tungsten, phosphor or copper bronze, or a tensioning strap, e.g. B. made of tungsten, so that the failure of a meeha, niche pointer attached to the thread is a measure of the pressure. The excursions are proportional to the pressure. The electrical compensation of the movement of the sensing element, known per se, is also suitable for the display.
Finally leaves. the number of revolutions of the feed wheel change until a constant echoing failure of the sensing element is reached, so that the number of revolutions is a measure of the degree of vacuum.
The principle on which the method according to the invention for measuring gas pressures, in particular very small gas pressures, is based differs quite significantly from the methods previously used, as can be readily seen. In particular, compared to the Langmuir see molecular manometer, it has essentially different characteristics and quite decisive advantages. There the internal friction for the transfer of an impulse to a tangent. ial to the impulse direction rotatable disc is used, and in order to obtain a measurable entrainment of the sensor discs by the driven Sehebe, both must have as small a distance as possible and the suspension must be very sensitive.
The efficiency of the power transmission is low. On the other hand, according to the method according to the invention with conveyor wheels, sufficiently strong currents can be generated even in a vacuum, which transmit powerful impulses even with greater distances between the sensing element. It is of the greatest importance for technical usability that, for this reason, the device working according to the inventive method can have a more robust design for movement and sensing organs. The internal friction plays no role in this type of pulse transmission according to the invention.
The invention is explained in more detail in the fol lowing example.
In Fig. I a first embodiment is shown in the axial section of the device.
FIG. 2 shows this measuring device in cross section through 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a second embodiment of the device in axial section.
Fig. 4 is a third embodiment of a vacuum measuring device in side view.
Fig. 5 shows a plan view of the apparatus of Fig. 4 with certain parts removed.
FIG. 6 is a plan view of certain parts of FIG. 4.
FIG. 7 shows a detail of this device according to FIG. 4, and FIG. 8 shows a schematic cross-section along the line 8-8 in FIG. 7.
Fig. 9 is a fourth embodiment of a device, also in axial section.
The device for measuring the pressure according to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 is located within a housing 6 made of glass or also of metal, which is connected to the space whose pressure is to be measured through a connection piece 23. A conveyor wheel 1, consisting of an end ring 11 with its surface perpendicular to the drive shaft 4 and attached blades 9, the slightly angled or curved surfaces of which run parallel to the wheel axle, generates a gas flow extending radially from the inside out when it rotates.
The drive for the transport wheel is conveyed via the shaft 4 from the electric motor 5, which is located outside the measuring space and the vacuum. The drive shaft 4 is inserted into the measuring space by means of a seal 8. This seal can be a labyrinth seal in which the individual chambers are connected to rooms with gradually lower pressure by being connected to the corresponding pumps of a pump unit.
The vacuum tightness of the rotary leadthrough could also be ensured by the fact that the drive motor 5 is also under pressure.
The flow running from the inside to the outside hits an impeller 2 made of a light material, plastic, aluminum and the like, in the form of a short cylinder, the jacket of which has been given a blade-like shape; in which the strips 10 created by slitting are rotated out of the lateral surface up to 45. As a result, the flow exerts a torque on the impeller. The impeller hangs on three suspension threads 24 offset by 120, which converge above the measuring system on a torsion wire or tension band 25 and are attached to this. The rotation of the impeller caused by the torque is made visible by a small mirror with a light pointer attached to the torsion thread 25.
The restoring force for the torque is provided by the self-torsion of the torsion thread. By a Führrungsseheibe 7, on which the guide cylinder 7a attached to the impeller slide along with a small gap when the Dre hung, a strong, the risk of damage caused by the rapidly rotating drive wheel swinging of the impeller 2 is prevented. Its movement can be dampened by damper devices known per se, for example by generating eddy currents in the impeller, in order to enable a quick reading.
Since very high speeds for the conveyor wheel 1 can be generated with known motors, such strong radial flows can be transmitted to the gas with the specified Vorriehtung even at very low pressures that the sensing element with the appropriate fineness and sensitive suspension still experiences sufficiently strong torques for measurable deflections. It is advantageous to choose different constant speeds for different measuring ranges; the device can therefore be used for pressures from atmospheric pressure to 1 Torr as well as for the smallest pressures from 1 Torr to 10-6 Torr and lower, with the highest accuracy being achieved.
The embodiment according to FIG. 3 differs essentially from that shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 only in that the rotation is transmitted to the drive wheel not via a vacuum-tight guided shaft with the rotor located outside the housing, but by a magnetic coupling . A magnet with the two pole pieces 18 is attached to the shaft 4, which is set in rotation by the motor (not shown here).
Inside the housing there is a frame 16 opposite these pole pieces with two ferromanetic blocks 17. When the shaft 4 rotates, the poles of the magnet take the blocks with them and thus transfer the rotation to the conveyor wheel 1 attached above the frame, its blades 9 give the Cas a flow directed from the inside out.
The frame 16 and the conveyor wheel 1 are advantageously designed in such a way that they together form a gyroscope with a bearing on the conveyor wheel shaft. 14 rests on a bearing pin 15 attached to the housing.
In addition, the conveyor wheel shaft noelt rests above the conveyor wheel in a guide bearing 38. The focus of vision of the conveyor wheel system with frame should be below the bearing 14, 15 as far as possible.
The impeller 2 can still hang on a special suspension ring 37 while this is connected to the torsion thread or tensioning strap 25. Both the torsion thread or the tensioning band and the guide bearing 38 for the transport wheel can be attached to a frame 36. The housing for the entire measuring system is formed in the lower part 6 by a metal block on which a cylindrical glass tube is placed on the upper housing part by means of a seal 52.
This is closed by a cover 51 that is pressed vacuum-tight onto the glass tubes by means of threaded bolts 50. The connection to the room, the pressure of which is to be measured, is made via a hole in the metal block 6 with the connecting piece 22 attached. The advantage of the magnetic coupling shown here for the conveyor wheel is that there is no need for rotary unions that are difficult to manufacture and tend to leak.
The embodiment according to FIG. 4 with the details shown in FIGS. 5 to 8 differs from the previously specified ones in that the measuring system with drive motor 5, conveyor wheel 1, impeller 2 and display device 40 on a base plate 44, a statif 45 and scaffolding arms 45 'is insensitive to vibrations, so that this device can be used as a whole in a room, the pressure of which is to be measured, independently of other fastening means.
Adjustment to avoid any jamming on the transport wheel and impeller is possible with the help of three viewing shafts 46.
The drive motor 5 acts directly via a short AV shaft 4 on the drive wheel, which can be designed in the form described above. In Fig. 8 the conveyor wheel is shown schematically in cross section. The impeller 2 hangs by means of struts 47 on a screen plate 48 which rests with an axis 48a, which can rotate, in an upper guide bearing 42 and below support bearing 43. Two spiral springs 41 fastened in opposite directions on the frame arm 45 and on the axle 48a provide the restoring force for the shaft 48a.
With a balance between the restoring force and the torque generated by the radial flow on the impeller, the pressure prevailing in the room can be read on a scale 40a, over which a pointer 40 attached to the faceplate 48 plays.
Two counterweights 39 for the pointer can also be attached to the faceplate 48.
9 shows an embodiment in which a conveyor wheel 1 and a running edge 2 are not arranged concentrically in one plane, but rather are arranged one behind the other in the measuring tubes. In this case, the feed wheel has propeller-like blades 13 which are fastened on the inside on the hub 14 and outside on the cylinder 12. The plane of the propeller or conveyor wheel blades is therefore out of the plane perpendicular to the axis @ approximately at an angle of 30 to 50.
The hub 14 is movable on a bearing journal 15. When the feed wheel rotates, it generates a flow in a direction parallel to the feed wheel axis. As a result, an impeller 2, which in this case is designed similarly to the conveyor wheel itself, is also set in rotation until it is suspended or through known electromagnetic means caused restoring force that inhibits rotation.
The impeller and conveyor wheels can still be held in the correct position by means of guide brackets 28 on the inner housing 6. Through the window 19 in the housing wall 6, the measuring system stands with an external Raz. in connection, which is closed off by the jacket housing 21 and is fastened to the recipient connection pipe 23 via a connection piece 22 by means of a flange connection.
Above the impeller, the inner housing wall also has a window 20 for air to exit.Instead of the flow being generated from bottom to top, i.e. from the conveyor wheel to the impeller, a flow in the opposite direction can also be generated when the conveyor wheel rotates in the opposite direction There are certain advantages, because the train acting in the longitudinal direction due to the flow can be absorbed by the suspension of the impeller and therefore no special guide con solpn 28 for the impeller.
While the housing part 6, which surrounds the farder wheel and impeller, should preferably be made of aluminum, the upper part of the housing can advantageously consist of a glass tube 26 closed at the top, which is attached to the metal housing by means of a vacuum-tight glass-V-metal tube fusion 27 known per se Is to hold the suspension with torsion thread or strap 25, on hanging threads 24 and display mirror 3 is used in front of a frame structure 29, which rut on the lower metal housing 6.
Except for a narrow opening for the implementation of the Tor sion thread, the lower housing part can be separated from the upper part by an intermediate floor.
In all of the embodiments described, the amount of air conveyed, and thus the amount of movement or angular momentum transmitted, is always proportional to the pressure in the measuring space. With a constant rotation of the feed wheel, the failure achieved is a measure of the prevailing pressure. The measurement can be carried out in such a way that a return force, for example the torsional tension of the suspension strap, compensates the torque, or the transmitted rotation can be compensated by an electromagnetic counterforce in a manner known per se. The current required for this is then a measure of the flow and the prevailing pressure.
For the measurement of very low pressures, it is advantageous in the described device to choose the lightest possible design, especially of the impeller 2 serving as a sensing element and its suspension, since this definitely improves the sensitivity.
Since, however, with the mechanical energy supply, which characterizes the process, much larger amounts of energy can be supplied in comparison to, for example, thermal energy supply, that is to say speeds of up to 10,000 revolutions per minute and more can be easily achieved and thus the gas molecules also have a very good effect If a much larger impulse is received, a fineness of drive and sensing element and suspension, which is common in technical, for example electrical measuring devices, is sufficient.
Further possible variations consist in the fact that thermal energy can also be supplied by heating the conveyor wheel blades; the impulse acting on the sensing element is increased by the generated thermal molecular pressure.
It can furthermore be advantageous to relieve the bearing or the suspension magnetically, or to suspend it entirely magnetically, both in the case of the feed wheel and in the case of the sensing element, that is to say the impeller.
The described method for measuring small pressures has not only proven itself in high vacuum technology, but also meets a need in the chemical industry for a continuously indicating, reliable and insensitive pressure measuring device for fine and rough vacuum.
