Two-stroke machine for producing a chemical reaction in a gaseous medium
by adiabatic compression followed by adiabatic expansion.
The main patent describes a process for producing, in a gaseous medium, a chemical reaction by adiabatic compression followed by adiabatic expansion in a cylinder of a reciprocating machine, which process is characterized in that, to maintain the movement of said machine, the expansion energy of a driving gas is used which is introduced under pressure into said cylinder, at a pressure lower than the maximum pressure liable to be established in this cylinder during d 'a machine cycle.
The main patent also gives the description of a two-stroke machine for the implementation of said process, which is characterized in that it comprises a cylinder in which is mounted a piston limiting at least one working space in this cylinder, the latter having inlet orifices for the agents to undergo said chemical reaction, exhaust for the products of this reaction and admission for said engine gas.
In one embodiment described in the main patent, the cylinder is closed at its ends and is movable axially relative to a frame of this machine, as is the piston. Thus, this embodiment has a working space on each side of the piston. A portion of the frame on which the cylinder moves has orifices corresponding to the inlet and outlet of the cylinder and communicating with various conduits.
The machine forming the subject of the present invention has all the characteristics of said embodiment. It is, moreover, characterized in that said cylinder has the outside shape of a cylinder of revolution, and in that the frame of the machine comprises a cylinder support of corresponding shape, the center of gravity of the cylinder being at the - below the horizontal axis of its outer surface. The cylinder is thus prevented from rotating in its support around its horizontal axis.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of said embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical cross section along II-II of FIG. 1, and
fig. 3 is a view in vertical cross section along III-III of FIG. 1.
The machine shown comprises a frame 1 in which is mounted a sleeve 2, cylindrical on the inside, which contains a movable cylinder 3. A gas chamber 6, placed inside and at the top of the frame, communicates with an inlet pipe for the gas to be treated in the machine. This gas chamber communicates with an intake port 7 of the cylinder liner 2. In addition, a gas chamber 9 is provided inside the frame at its lower part and communicates with an exhaust pipe for the treated gas, as well as with two exhaust ports 10 and 10 'of. shirt 2.
The frame also contains two other chambers 12a and 12b which communicate with each other by a communication channel 12 and which serve to supply an auxiliary fluid which, by relaxing, can provide the energy necessary to keep the machine in motion and which, in addition, helps to establish the desired temperature under a certain compression. The auxiliary fluid chosen is often steam.
It arrives through a tube 16 and can pass through three pairs of corresponding openings 17a, 17a ', 18a and, placed symmetrically, 17b, 17b' and 18b (these last three not being shown), from each of the chambers 12a and 12b up to the space limited by the jacket 2.
The movable cylinder 3 comprises the following ports: an intake port 8 for the gaseous fluid to be treated, two exhaust ports 11 and 11 ′ for the treated fluid and for the auxiliary gas and three pairs of ports 15a, 15a ', 14a and 15b, 15b' and 14b for the arrival of the auxiliary gas. The intake port 8, the exhaust ports 11, 11 'and the ports 15a, 15a', 15b and 15b 'for the auxiliary gas are located above the horizontal plane passing through the axis of the inner and outer surfaces of the cylinder. Only the openings 14a and 14b for the auxiliary gas are located below this plane.
It is evident that, under these conditions, the center of gravity of the cylinder is below the horizontal plane passing through its axis and, therefore, when this cylinder moves axially in the liner 2, it does not tend to rotate around its axis, from which it would result: that the various lights would not be in the respective positions desired to be able to establish communication with the various rooms of the frame.
The cylinder 3 is composed of two portions 3a and 3b which each comprise a cylinder head and a part of the wall of the cylinder which is connected thereto. Since the part of the cylinder wall of the portion 3a is quite short and the portion 3b is quite long, the screw joint 4 between the two portions is located between the slots 8, 11, 11 'on one side and 14a, 15a and 15a 'on the other.
This construction has certain advantages over that in which the cylinder heads are mounted in a one-piece cylinder wall. The seal between a cylinder head and the cylinder wall of a machine thus constructed would undergo considerable stresses due to the high pressures liable to build up in the cylinder at the end of compression.
The cylinder wall extends beyond the cylinder heads so as to form protruding flanges 19 at its ends which contribute significantly to increasing the rigidity of the cylinder ends.
The cavities formed by these protruding rims can advantageously have the shape of a hexagon intended to receive a key allowing the portions 3a and 3b to be screwed onto one another.
A piston 5 is freely movable in the cylinder 3. The lubrication of the piston and the cylinder is effected by means of lubricating grooves made at appropriate points on the inner surfaces of the liner 2 and of the cylinder 3.
The operation of the machine described is the same as that of the machine referred to at the start of this description and which was described in the main patent:
The piston 5 and the cylinder 3 are always movable in opposite directions and each of them performs a back and forth movement with respect to its central position, the amplitudes of the respective movements of these members being inversely proportional to their masses. respective. Relaxation and compression occur alternately in each of the spaces on both sides of the piston.
If it is assumed that the piston is in its end-of-stroke position on the right and that, therefore, the cylinder is in its end-of-stroke position on the left, the left side of the cylinder communicates through the intake port 8 and the exhaust ports 11 and 11 'open with the gas chamber 6 and with the gas chamber 9.
The gas to be treated leaving the gas chamber 6 drives out the treated mixture which is in the left side of the cylinder into the gas chamber 9 and sweeps said side of the cylinder. When the piston then comes to the left, the lights 8, 11 and 11 'close and the gas in the left side of the cylinder is compressed.
During this compression, the movement of cylinder 3 causes the ports 14a, 15a and 15a 'to communicate with the ports 18a, 17a and 17a' so as to allow auxiliary gas to enter the cylinder at a pressure greater than that of the compression reached at this moment and, once these ports are closed, the auxiliary gas is further compressed with the gas to be treated, until the final compression is reached and the movements of the piston and the cylinder are reversed. During the next expansion stroke the leva ports, 15a and 15a 'reopen at some point and thus allow a further quantity of auxiliary gas to enter the cylinder.
At the end of this stroke, the intake and exhaust lights open again and the cycle begins again on the side considered. It is the same on the other side of the piston, so that when compression occurs in the left side of the cylinder, expansion occurs in its right side, and vice versa.
The auxiliary gas may have to fulfill a dual function:
Firstly, if the Cp / C @ ratio of the auxiliary gas arriving in the cylinder during compression is greater than that of the gas to be treated, it follows that the final temperature which is established during the compression is higher than if this gas were not supplied to the cylinder. Second, the auxiliary gas which enters the cylinder during the compression stroke and during the expansion stroke provides energy which may be required to keep the machine running.
Several advantages result from the shape of a cylinder of revolution given to the. movable cylinder. In particular, the cylinder may consist of two portions each comprising one of the cylinder heads of the cyUndre and a part of the cylinder wall, and these two portions of the cylinder are easy to join together by means of a screw joint formed in the cylinder wall. .
