Piston of an internal combustion machine, in particular of a machine having at least one free piston. The invention relates to a piston of an internal combustion machine, in particular of a machine having at least one free piston, that is to say to a piston whose stroke length depends on the balance of the driving and resistant energies to which it is subjected, and not of a kinematic system.
The object of the invention is to ensure, by simple means, efficient cooling of the head of a piston of the type indicated and to prevent ruptures in the vicinity of the right where the bottom of the piston is attached to the side wall of the latter.
The piston according to the invention, which comprises an inner tubular partition coaxial with the outer wall of the piston, is characterized in that the space between its outer wall and the inner tubular partition is closed to. one end by the bottom of the piston and at the other end by an annular transverse wall so as to. thus forming a chamber intended to be partially.
filled with a refrigerant liquid, and in that inlet and outlet openings for the refrigerant liquid are established in said tubular partition, on either side of a second transverse wall located inside the partition tubular and at a certain distance both from the bottom of the piston and from said first transverse wall, a refrigerant liquid supply duct opening into the chamber which is formed inside said tubular partition between the second transverse wall and the bottom piston, while the space located on the opposite side of the second transverse wall communicates with a refrigerant liquid discharge duct.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, four different embodiments of the piston which is the subject of the invention.
Figs.1 to 4 show an axial section of each of the embodiments.
Fig. 5 shows schematically in section the left part of a gas generator with free pistons opposed with the conduits for supplying and discharging the coolant liquid from the engine piston belonging to the mobile equipment of said part of the generator.
Each piston shown in the various figures and constituting the driving piston of a free piston assembly comprises a base 1, the front face of which delimits the space of the driving cylinder in which this piston works. This piston base has a relatively high thickness in order to put it in a position to withstand the high pressures which act on this base, during the operation of the internal combustion machine of which the piston is part.
. The periphery of the piston base 1 is. connected to the outer part, the outer cylindrical surface of which is opposite the inner cylindrical surface of the engine cylinder. In this outer part 2 are housed, in the usual way, sealing rings 3. Part 2 has a reduced thickness to thus retain a certain elasticity for it to allow it to follow to a certain extent the expansions to which the piston is subjected. by its heating taking place during the operation of the. machine. The critical place where ruptures easily occur is. constituted by the right of circular junction a. Despite the elasticity of the outer wall 2 of the piston, care must be taken to cool the seal a and its vicinity very effectively.
The manner in which this cooling will be achieved will be described below.
The wall 2, because of its reduced thickness, not being capable of transmitting the forces acting on the head 1 of the piston, the latter has, at. inside this wall 2, and coaxially with it, a tubular partition 4 having. moon thickness greater than that of the wall 2 and preferably having a diameter equal to at least. half the diameter of the outer wall 2, the partition 4 being. destined to. transmit a large part of the forces acting on the piston head.
To ensure cooling. of the piston area adjacent to the above. seal a, the space between the outer wall 2 and the partition 4 is designed as a chamber b partially filled with a refrigerant liquid, for example oil. For this purpose, this room is. closed at one end by an annular transverse wall 5 located, preferably behind the area where it is located. the sealing rings 3, and at the other end by the bottom of the piston.
In the partition 4 are arranged inlet openings 6 and outlet openings 7 for the coolant, these openings being at a certain distance; as well of .fond piton 1 limiting, by its peripheral part, the chamber b to. the front, that of the annular wall 5 limiting the chamber b at the rear. In this way, in chamber b, front and rear pockets are obtained in which, during the reciprocating movements of the piston, a mattress formed by a refrigerant liquid is housed and which cannot. not escape through the entry or exit openings of the chamber b.
To allow the free expansion of the cylindrical outer wall 2 relative to the partition 4, the wall 5 is either integral with the wall 2 alone (see Fig. 2 and Fig. 4) or else integral with the partition 4 alone ( see fig. 3), or else partly integral with the wall 2 and partly integral with the partition 4 (see fig. 1). In all cases, sealing means 8 seal chamber b, while allowing a certain axial sliding of the rear end of wall 2 with respect to partition 4.
Inside the tubular partition 4 and between the two series of intake 6 and exhaust openings. 7 of the refrigerant liquid is provided a second transverse wall 9 delimiting. with the central part of the bottom 1 of the piston, a coolant liquid inlet chamber c. The liquid is. brought into the chamber c by a supply duct 10, the end of which preferably projects with respect to the wall 9, towards the interior of the chamber c to thus allow, during the movement of the piston towards the right, the formation around this protruding end of a mattress of liquid which is thus prevented from returning to the interior of the duct. feed 10.
The end of the conduit. 10 may have the section of a nozzle, as indicated by fi-. 1. According to another form of execution shown in. fig. 4, it is. provided, at the outlet end of the conduit 10, a deflection plate 11 which diverts the coolant r adia.lement, arriving in an axial direction. This deflection prevents a direct projection, against the center of the piston base, of the refrigerant liquid when it arrives.
In order to constantly evacuate a part of the refrigerant liquid, the duct 10 is surrounded by an annular evacuation duct 12, which communicates with the exhaust openings 7 of the chamber b. The arrival of the refrigerant liquid through the conduit 10 and its evacuation through the conduit 7.2 can take place in the manner shown by fi-. 5. This figure shows the left part of a gas generator with opposed free pistons, which comprises an engine cylinder 13 in which the engine piston works, and a compressor cylinder 14 in which moves a compressor piston 15 integral with the engine piston. mentioned above and forming with it a mobile team.
The compartment located on the right side. of the piston 15 constitutes the compressor space proper, this space being provided with suction valves 16 and delivery valves 17, while the space located on the left side of this same piston constitutes a pneumatic energy accumulator.
To ensure the arrival and the exit of the coolant liquid, a tube 19 is fixed on the cover 18 of the cylinder 14. This tube carries at its inner end, the bottom 20 of which is crossed by the tube 12 which is integral with the crew mobile, a stuffing box or other sealing means 21 which seals between the bottom 20 of the tube 19 and said tube 12. In addition, inside the tube 19 and in the axis thereof is fixed a second tube 22 which extends through the tube 19 to the interior of the tube 10 integral with the motor piston forming part of the moving assembly. The outer end of the tube 19 communicates with a discharge duct 23 for the refrigerant liquid, while the outer end of the tube 22 is. connected to a duct 24 for supplying the refrigerant liquid.
Of course, all these latter tubes 19, 22, 23 and 24 are stationary and do not participate in the back and forth movement. of the mobile crew.
The refrigerant liquid injected through tube 22 into tube 10 thus arrives in ehambre c adjacent to the central part of the base 1 of the motor piston. Then, this liquid enters, through the openings 6, into the chamber b. This liquid, which only partially fills chamber b, forms inside the latter a liquid mattress which, during the movement of the piston and as a result of the inertia of the refrigerant liquid, produces a movement of reciprocating movement, the speed of which relative to the walls of the piston is practically equal to the speed of the piston itself.
Therefore, the oil is thrown forcefully against the. piston head, which provides highly efficient cooling which is further enhanced by vortices that form inside the liquid mattress. It should be noted that these movements of the mattress are particularly intense in a free piston which is subjected in the vicinity of the dead points to great delays and accelerations.
The layout of the inner wall of the piston head 1 in the vicinity of the seal a is moreover made so as to obtain a round turn at the location of this seal.
The liquid mattress which forms in chamber c undergoes similar movements and also has an intense cooling effect when it is thrown against the central part of the piston head.
The surplus of the refrigerant liquid which is brought by the tube 10 is constantly evacuated by the openings 7 and by the interval between the tubes 10 and 12, to thus arrive in the tube 19 from which it leaves by the conduit 23.
Since the motor piston is preferably made of steel, it is advantageous, to facilitate its manufacture, to make it in several parts. It is. as well as, according to fig.1, 'this piston is. essentially consisting of two parts d and e. Part d comprises the bottom 1, the outer tubular partition 4, part of the wall 2 and part of the wall 5, while part e comprises the greater part of the outer wall 2 and part of the wall 5. The two parts d and e are fixed to each other by a weld joint 25. The assembly of the motor piston thus formed is fixed to the rod 26 which connects the motor piston to the compressor piston 15, for example using bolts.
The fixing of the transverse wall 9 and the tubes 10 and 12 inside the motor piston can take place, for example, in the manner. indicated by fig.l, according to which the tube 12 is integral with the wall 9 which also carries, for example by means of a weld joint 27, the tube 10.
The wall 9 itself is applied against a circular stop 28 of the partition 4, with the aid of a nut 29 screwed on a thread of the tube 12 and pressing against a plate 30 which, for its part, rests against a shoulder. 31 inside the, partition 4. Openings 32 formed in the tube 12 provide the. communication between the outlet openings 7 of the chamber b and. the interval between tubes 10 and. 12.
According to fig. 2, the engine piston is body titled by parts f and g, part f comprising. le- piston base 1, the outer cylindrical wall 2 and the transverse wall 5, while part g essentially comprises the inner tubular partition 4, this partition, in the. embodiment of FIG. 2, constituting the direct extension of the rod 26.
The fixing of the part f on the part g takes place using studs 33, one end of which is screwed into the wall 5, tan say that the other end passes through a ring 34 resting on the extension 26 of part g, nuts 35 being fixed on the free ends of the bolts 33 to rest against the ring 34.
According to fig. 2, the tube 12 carries at its inner end a flange 36 which rests against a shoulder 31, under the pressure of studs and nuts which apply the second transverse wall 9 carrying the tube 10 against another shoulder 37 to inside the bulkhead 4.
In the embodiment of FIG. 3, part h of the motor piston comprises the bottom 1 and the outer cylindrical wall 2, while part i comprises the inner tubular partition 4 and the. wall 5. These two parts are joined to each other using studs 38 which tend to bring together, on the one hand, a ring 39 resting at 40 on part h and, on the other hand , the wall 9 resting on a shoulder 41 of the partition 4. The assembly hi is fixed, for example, by means of bolts on a flange 42 of the rod 26 on the end of which is also located, fixed at 43 the pipe 12, while the. pipe 10, as in the previous case, is fixed in the wall 9.
In the embodiment shown at. in fig. 4, the driving piston is. consisting of three main parts: 1 a part j constituting the central part of the piston base, 2 a part k constituting the peripheral part of the piston base, the outer wall 2 and the transverse wall 5, this part k being, in addition, provided, towards the front, with a frustoconical extension 44 directed towards the inside of the piston and, constituting the housing for the part j of the piston base, 3 forming a part l.
the inner tubular partition 4 of the piston and provided with a flange 45 to which are threaded, for example by screws, the end of the hollow rod 26, as well as an intermediate part 46 serving as a support for the pipe 12.
The three parts j, k and. 1 are. connected to each other by studs 47 screwed by one of their ends into part j and resting., by means of nuts, fixed on their other end, against the wall 9 which, for its part, s 'bears against a shoulder 48 provided on part 1, the inner edge of the frustoconical part 44 of the element k thus being clamped between the jet parts 1.
It should be noted that by free piston we understand not only a piston whose two dead points are variable, but also. a piston having only one variable dead point, in particular the internal dead point.
