Machine for finishing the surfaces of turbine blades. The present invention relates to a machine for finishing the surfaces of turbine blades, in particular of a turbine using combustion gases or steam.
The surfaces of such blades usually have a complex shape. In Disclosure No. 278667, a method and apparatus is disclosed by which it is possible to manufacture such blades.
The object of the present invention is to provide a machine which is arranged in such a way as to facilitate the execution of the aforementioned method.
According to the invention, the machine comprises a blade support, a die support, means for moving an abrasive belt between the two supports and means carrying the two supports for moving the blade surface on one of the supports. relative to the stamping surface on the other support, and in coincidence with this surface, a hydraulic mechanism to effect such a movement,
and control means for adjusting said mechanism such that the supports undergo relative displacement towards each other from a vane loading position first at a certain speed until the supports. supports reach a working position with the vane and the die surface next to each other and then at a reduced speed which is maintained throughout the finishing operation for which the two surfaces are in contact with the two sides of the abrasive belt.
The hydraulic mechanism could be controlled in such a way that when the two supports (or more precisely the two surfaces of the die and of the vane) reach a predetermined position representing the end of the finishing operation, said hydraulic mechanism is obliged to outsource a rapid return action to return the supports to the loading position in order to start the operation again on another blade.
Any type of hydraulic valve can be used to effect different degrees of relative movement of the supports, and it is preferred to arrange the control valves to operate electrically under the control of switches responsive to the arrival of the supports in positions. predetermined relative.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject of the present invention.

Fig. 6 is a schematic view of the workpiece support, the die for providing the desired shape to the turbine blade, and associated members, adjusted to produce a blade of a different shape from that shown. in fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a partial elevational view of a detail showing the clamping of a blade in its support. g fig. 1, a turbine blade is indicated at 3 and must be finished to the desired shape. A die carrier 1 is used having a die-forging surface 2 which is previously shaped to the reverse shape of that which is to be produced in one or other of the faces of the vane 3. A movable abrasive surface passes between the blade. stamping surface 2 and the surface of the vane 3, this mobile abrasive surface having the form of a strip 4 with its non-abrasive face presented to the stamping surface 2.
The surface of the vane 3 and the die-forging surface 2 are brought together with respect to each other and are brought into exact coincidence, - so that the mobile abrasive surface comes into contact with the surface of the vane 3. By exerting pressure. between the vane and the die support 1, the abrasive surface which is supported by the stamping surface 2 forces the latter to reproduce its shape (but reversed) on the surface of the vane 3 and thus makes it possible to finish quickly and to the dawn. to the desired shape. The method obviously makes it possible to repeat the operation with precision in order to obtain blades which conform exactly to each other.
The machine shown in fig. 2 is: intended for the finish of the convex face and that of FIG. 6 to the finish of the concave face of a turbine blade 3, that is to say of the upper surface, respectively lower face of the blade shown in FIG. 1. In this particular construction, the die support 1 is fixed in position, and a support 90 to which a vane 3 is fixed is carried by the lower end of a hydraulic cylinder 91 which can slide on a piston 92 fixed on it. the frame 93 of the machine.
A fluid, usually oil, is admitted to the cylinder 91 on one side of the piston 92 to cause displacement of the cylinder and with it from the support 90 downwards in order to present the vane to the strip 4 and then, when the strip has completed the finishing operation, fluid is admitted to cylinder 91 on the other side of the piston to lift support 90 and return it to its original position in order to allow the vane finished. to be removed and replaced.
The vane 3 is placed in its support 90, and the line of movement of the cylinder 91 is fixed with respect to the die support 1, so that the vane 3 is presented juxtaposed to the die surface 2 and in exact coincidence therewith, the movement of the support 90 taking place in this case along a straight line normal to the general surface of the die.
The abrasive belt 4 passes over guidge rollers 41 and between three rollers 42 driven by a tape 44 passing over two of the rollers 42, one of which is a motor, so that the abrasive belt 4 is driven by wedging between the surface rotary of the third roller 42 and of the movable belt 44. The abrasive belt 4 is guided as it approaches the die by a guide plate 43.
The fact that the vane is pushed towards the die support 1 by a liquid pressure ensures a uniform advancement of this vane 3 during the finishing operation, which makes it possible to achieve a high degree of finish with good. heard the precision that is ensured by the process used.
For the rapid production of finished vanes, means are used to lower the cylinder 91 rapidly from its upper seek position to a position in which the vane 3 is near the die support 1, after which the speed of movement is reduced to advance vane 3 at the required speed during the finishing operation performed by web 4.
This is done by the presence, in the supply of liquid to the cylinder, of a control valve which is actuated by the descent of the cylinder to decrease the speed of supply of liquid at the desired time; the valve is then actuated when the required depth of advance has been reached to reverse the supply of liquid to cylinder 91, so as to lift it rapidly to its reloading position.
Referring to fig. 5 the control valve is shown schematically, the parts being generally indicated in FIG. 2. In this diagram, the liquid pipes are shown in solid lines and the electric lines in dotted lines. The electrical control elements and the like are of known shape and are therefore not shown in detail.
The part of the cylinder 91 above the barrel 92 is provided with a supply and discharge line 94. The part of the cylinder below the piston 92 is likewise provided with a supply and discharge line. unload 95.
The cycle of operations is initiated by a push-button switch 96 which, via a line 96 ', closes an electrical circuit of a solenoid 97, the excitation of which actuates a valve 122 to connect the circuit. pipe 95, connected at the lower end of cylinder 91, to a supply pipe 98 of pressurized liquid via a pipe 98 ', the pipe 98 being supplied with pressurized liquid by a pump 99 driven by a motor sucking the liquid through a pipe 99 'and a filter 992.
At this time, the line 94 connected to the upper end of the cylinder 91 is connected to the regulator assembly 119 having a channel 100 communicating with the line 94. A valve 1.09 of the assembly 119 then opens, from so that the channel 100 and the pipe 94 are in communication with a channel 11l 'which is connected by a pipe 112 to the valve 122 which, at this moment, connects the pipe 112 and, therefore, the end upper cylinder 91 with a discharge line 113.
With the lower part of the cylinder 91 being supplied with liquid under pressure through the pipe 95, and the upper part being connected to the discharge pipe 94, the cylinder 91 is moved rapidly downwards.
During this rapid descent time, valve 109 is held open by the pressurized liquid discharged from the upper end of the cylinder through line 94 and channel 100. This rapid action continues until A block 107 moving with the cylinder 91 closes a microswitch 108 which is normally open.
This switch closes an excitation circuit of a solenoid 105 via a line 108 ', a valve 104 being actuated by said solenoid: The excitation: of the solenoid 105 forces the valve 104 to connect the line 98 to valve 109 through line 103. The valve is now closed by pressurized liquid acting on it, so that channel 100 is closed and a free discharge of liquid from the end upper cylinder 91 is caught.
However, a channel 111 connected to channel 100 is connected by branch 110 'to an adjustable needle valve 110, to channel 111' and thence to line 112. The adjustment of valve 110 controls the speed at which the valve is liquid can be discharged from: the upper end of cylinder 91 through line 94, channel 111, branch 110 ', valve 110, channel 111' and from there through line 112 to the exhaust .
Thus, the valve 109 is closed by the excitation of the solenoid 105 effected by the actuation of the switch 108 when the cylinder 91 (and therefore the vane 3) has been moved rapidly into a position. in which the vane 3 -is near the die holder 1. At this point, the liquid coming from the upper end of the cylinder can only be discharged beyond the needle valve 110 and the one This is set to reduce the discharge speed to a value such that it produces the required subsequent slow movement of cylinder 91 during actual advancement, while abrasive belt 4 acts on vane 3.
This advance adjusting action continues until a second cam block 114 opens a second microswitch 1.15 which is normally closed. When this switch is open, it de-energizes the solenoid 97 via a line 115 '. The solenoid 97 operates the valve, # 122 to connect the line 95 to the line 113, so that the lower end of the cylinder 91 is connected to the discharge. At the same time, the valve 122 connects the line 112 and the line 98 through the line 98 '.
The channel 111 'has a branch 11.6 which is normally closed by a valve 1.17 pressed by a spring. This valve is opened by the application of pressure through the channels 111 'and 116, so that the pressurized liquid is supplied through a channel 118 and the channels 110' and 111 to the line 94 and thus at the upper end of the cylinder dre 91.
Thus, the upper end of cylinder 91 is supplied with pressurized liquid and the lower end is open to discharge, which results in rapidly moving the cylinder upward in its direction. original position, ready for a next cycle of operations initiated with switch 96.
Fig. 3 shows in detail the regulator 119 of FIG. 5, the same parts having the same reference signs.
The adjustment of the needle valve 110 is controlled by a screw 120 having an actuating button 121 which can be adjusted according to the degree of travel.
The actuating blocks 107 and 114 for the microswitches 108 and 115, are adjustable to operate at points which are most suitable for each particular case. This can be done by mounting the blocks slidably on a support 131 and placing an adjustment screw for each block; 132, as shown in fig. 2 and 3.
To dampen the final part of the rapid downward movement of cylinder 91, a hydraulic damper (dash-pot) can be used as shown in fig. 4 and 5. The; cylinder is provided with an arm 133 which moves to engage with the head of a plunger 123 mounted in a cylinder 124, the liquid which escapes from this cylinder is regulated by an adjustable needle valve 125. The discharged liquid passes into a chamber 126 which is connected by a line 127 and a one-way valve 128 to the cylinder 124.
The plunger 123 is urged outward by a spring 129, so that when the arm 133 is lifted away from the plunger 123, the spring moves it and liquid is returned to the cylinder 124 through the cylinder. pipe 127 and beyond valve 128 from chamber 126, so the dash-pot constitutes a self-recovery assembly.
A jet 130 is shown in FIG. 2 to supply oil to band 4 as it passes through die carrier 1.
As has already been said, FIG. 2 shows the use of a die having the required shape to finish the convex surface of a turbine blade, that is to say the upper surface of the blade 3 shown in FIG. 1. In fig. 6, the relevant parts of the same machine are shown with a die holder 1 shaped to finish the concave surface of a vane as shown in the holder 90 of this figure.
The guide plate 43 shown in FIGS. 2 and 6 is provided for the finishing of the convex, respectively concave surface of the blade 3. This guide is arranged as shown, so as to exert sufficient resistance on the abrasive belt 4 in order to provide a slack which can be pressed against the die surface 2 by the vane 3 when it is moved against the support of the die 1. The vane support 90 can be arranged in any suitable manner to receive a vane.
As shown in fig. 7, the lower end of the cylinder 91 has a tab 134 carrying a fixing device 135 having at one end a fixing sleeve 136 in which one end of the blade 3 is housed, the other end being retained by a oscillating clamp 137 removable, of the usual type, which can be blocked by a screw 138 abutting against one face of the fixing device 135.
It will be understood that the machine described allows the finishing process to be carried out in a manner which ensures the correct arrangement of the blade 3 on the die support 1, 1a. gentle presentation of the surface of the vane 3 to the abrasive surface of the strip 4 is at the same time the repetitive fast action of the finishing operation on successive vanes, all being done without requiring any special skill on the part of the operator.
