Process for melting metal objects under pressure and a machine for carrying out said process. The known methods of melting metal objects under pressure, and in particular. the so-called cold chamber processes consist in injecting under high pressure a load of molten metal corresponding to a volume of metal substantially greater than that of the object. finished in a giving mold. the final form to the object.
In practice, the so-called cold chamber pressure melting process is carried out in the following way: A charge of molten metal is poured into an injection cylinder. An injection piston capable of sliding in said cylinder is then pushed, under high pressure, therefore at high speed, into said cylinder, so as to inject into a mold adjacent to the cylinder the quantity of molten metal contained in said cylinder. . cylinder.
However, such a melting process is not entirely satisfactory. Indeed, due to the presence in the cylinder, before the injection stroke, of a certain quantity of air, it frequently happens that the molded objects have blowholes and that a high percentage of molded parts must be , therefore discarded.
We have. tried to remedy this drawback deny by reducing the. injection speed, that the air contained, on the one hand, in the mold and, on the other hand, in the injection cylinder has time to escape before the metal is actually driven out in the mold. Another drawback then arose. Due to the low injection speed, some parts of the molded object cool before the whole object is cast. In this way, inadmissible surface irregularities were produced.
Some specialists in pressure casting have built, in order to partially remedy the aforementioned drawbacks, injection machines operating under very high pressures, the desired aim then being to compress the air mixing with the molten metal, in such a way. so that the blowholes which may result therefrom are of small size and thus the surface quality of the objects is improved. However, the use of very high pressure requires the construction of very heavy machines and of poor efficiency from the point of view of their production rate and, on the other hand, the blowholes, although smaller, do not exist. no less in molten objects.
The method of melting metal objects under pressure according to the invention differs from known methods by the fact that the injection is carried out in two phases, the first injection phase being carried out at a slower speed than the second, so that the air contained in the injection cylinder can be evacuated in its greater part during the first phase, the complete filling of the mold being carried out by the. second injection phase.
The invention a. also for object a machine allowing the implementation of the process indicated above, that is to say a machine comprising a frame on which is fixed a mold, an injection cylinder and an injection piston in connection with a motor mechanism driving it in motion.
The machine according to the invention is characterized by the fact that it further comprises an automatic control device for said mechanism, controlling each injection movement in two distinct phases, a first during which a relatively slow movement is imparted to the piston to allow the air contained in the injection cylinder to escape, a second phase consisting of a rapid movement of the piston causing the actual injection of the metal in the mold.
The accompanying drawing represents, schematically and. by way of example, several embodiments of a machine allowing the implementation of the method indicated above.
Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a first embodiment.
Fig. 2 shows a construction detail. Fig. 3 is a block diagram of a second embodiment.
Fig. 4 is a variant of. second embodiment, and FIG. 5 a section, on a large scale, of a detail of this variant.
Fig. 6 shows a detailed variant of the injection cylinder.
With reference to FIG. 1, this machine comprises a frame 1 on which is fixed a mold 2. An injection cylinder 3 is housed in the frame 1 and an injection piston 4 is able to slide in this cylinder 3. A motor mechanism, in l In this case, a working piston 5, controlled by a pressurized liquid, is provided to move the bead 4 in the cylinder 3. The pressurized liquid reaches the cylinder 6 in which the neck smooths the piston 5, via a pipe 7 controlled by a main control valve S.
On this pipe 7 is also arranged an adjustment valve 9 making it possible to adjust the flow rate of liquid supplied to the cylinder 6 and thus to adjust at the same time the speed of movement. piston 5 and injection piston 4.
The machine according to this first embodiment further comprises a pipe 10 forming a bypass, also supplying the working bead 5. This pipe is. controlled, on the one hand, by an automatically controlled valve 11 and, on the other hand, by an adjustment valve 12 of the same type as the valve 9.
The machine described with reference to FIG. 1 works from the. As follows: After having poured a load of molten metal into the ey linder 3 through the opening 13, the main valve S. is opened. The pressurized liquid then goes to cylinder 6 while passing. through the regulating valve 9. The valve 1.1 being closed, only the flow of liquid through the valve 9 determines the speed of movement of the pistons 4 and 5.
This speed is chosen to be relatively slow, so that the air contained in the mold 2 and in the cylinder 3, above the molten metal, can escape through the slots provided in the mold 2.
When the stroke of the pistons 5 and 4 has been sufficient for the air contained in the cylinder 3 to have been discharged into its. larger part and before. that the molten metal does not enter the mold, an automatic control device causes the opening of the valve 11, which produces an additional supply of pressurized liquid into the cylinder 6, hence an increase in the. speed of movement of the pistons 5 and 4. The so-called injection of molten metal then takes place at high speed, so that the molded object cools down only after it has been completely cast.
This injection process in two phases, a first slower than the second, during which the injection proper takes place, makes it possible to obtain molded objects free of air bubbles or bubbles, the surface of which is. perfect. In addition, since the process allows working at lower pressures than those ordinarily used, the risks of accidents due to the opening of a mold and the projection of molten metal on the outside are eliminated.
It is possible to control in several ways the automatic opening of the valve 11 for the engagement of the second injection phase.
This valve 11 can be controlled, for example, by means of a timing device, activated when the main valve 8 is opened and which causes the valve 11 to open afterwards. a determined time capable of being chosen at will, depending on the flow rate of the valve 9. In practice, it will be calculated at which point of the advance stroke of the piston 4 the air contained in the cylinder 3 a. most of it has been evacuated and the time delay device will be adjusted accordingly.
However, it is understood that other devices could. be provided to control the automatic opening of valve 11. One could, for example, imagine a mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical device or a device in which the various means indicated above would be combined, which is controlled either by the piston 4 itself, or by the molten metal hole in the injection cylinder.
On the. fig. 2 is shown a mechanical device provided for the automatic control of the opening of the valve 11 by the movement of the pistons 4 and 5.
This device comprises an element 14, in this case a roller, integral in movement with the pistons 4 and 5. The valve 11 is. actuated by a pusher 15. A lever 16, pivoted at 17 on the body of the valve 11, is articulated at 18 to the pusher 15. This lever 16 has a ramp 19 constituting., in a way, a cam.
In fig. \ ?, the device is shown at the start of the stroke of the piston 4. When, after the first injection phase, the roller 14 comes against the shoulder 20, it switches the lever 16 which then takes the. position indicated in dotted lines. This position of lever 16 corresponds to. open position of the. valve 11. It is possible, with such a device, to choose the moment of passage from the first phase to the second by loosening the screws 21 and thus changing the position of the roller 14 relative to the piston 4.
By giving the ramp 19 the desired shape, the opening of the valve 11 can be brought about either abruptly or gradually.
The diagram shown in fig. 3 shows a second embodiment in which the opening of the valve 11 is controlled by the molten metal itself, when it reaches a determined level in the chamber 22 if killed at the outlet of the injection cylinder 3 .
Indeed, a detector device, in this case an electrical contact 23, is placed in this chamber 22, near the injection cylinder. This contact 23 is connected to a relay 24 via an electronic amplifier 25. The relay 24 itself controls the circuit of an electromagnet 26 intended to actuate a pneumatic element, in this case a valve 27, controlling a compressed air circuit, intended to control, for example, by means of a piston or a membrane, the valve 11.
Thus, after having opened the main valve 8, the piston 4 moves at a relatively slow speed in the cylinder 3. When the molten metal arrives at the level of the contact 23, a current pulse is produced which, amplified by the electronic amplifier 25, closes relay 24. The electromagnet 26 is then energized and produces the opening of the valve 11 by means of the valve 27.
The triggering of the second injection phase therefore takes place and the molten metal is thus driven out at high speed into the mold 2.
The electrical contact 23 can be constituted, for example, by a terminal isolated from the mold 2 and from the frame of the machine, this terminal projecting into the chamber 22 by -venant. flush with the wall thereof. Contact would in this case be established by the molten metal itself, at the moment when its level in chamber 22 would reach the level of said terminal. In the case considered above, one of the electrical conductors going to the amplifier 25 would be connected to the ground of the machine, while the other would be connected to said terminal.
It is understood that one could also provide in the chamber 22 two terminals isolated from the mold 2 and connected to the amplifier 25.
In another embodiment, the contact between the two conductors going to the amplifier 25, instead of being established through the molten metal itself, could be established by an intermediate metal part which would be moved by. the molten metal when the latter reaches the level of the contact 23 in the chamber 22. Indeed, one could, for example, provide in the wall of the chamber 22 a cylindrical hole in which a plunger would slide. In the bottom of the hole would be housed the departure terminals of the wires going to amplifier 25, and the contact between said terminals would be established by the plunger at the moment when, pushed by the molten metal, it would move towards the bottom. the hole.
It should be noted that the plunger piston could be replaced by any part capable of being moved by the molten metal when it fills the chamber 22.
As a variant, instead of using a contact 23, one could use, as a detector device, a low inertia thermo-element causing a current pulse as soon as the molten metal, therefore at high temperature, comes into contact or simply s 'approach him. The rest of the command installation. valve 11 could include the same elements as those shown in FIG. 3.
Fig. 4 shows a variant of the embodiment shown in FIG. 3. In fact, in this embodiment, the opening of the valve 11 is also controlled by the molten metal itself, when it reaches a determined level in the chamber 22 located at the outlet of the cylinder d. injection 3.
The detector device is also a contact 23 shown on a large scale in FIG. 5. The latter installation comprises a transformer 30 connected by its terminals 31 to the supply network. This transformer is designed so that its terminals 32 of the secondary circuit are under low voltage. In this secondary circuit is interposed a relay 33 and the contact 23.
The contacts 34 of relay 33 themselves control the supply circuit of an electro-magnet 35 for controlling a primary valve 36. This primary valve 36, which is held at rest in the closed position by a spring 37, controls a hydraulic booster 38 consisting of a cylinder 39 in which a piston 40 slides. This piston 40 is integral with a valve 41. held in the rest position on its seat 42 by a spring 43. The valve 41 controls the. pipe 10 constituting the supply bypass of the working piston 5 during the. second injection phase.
In this latter embodiment, valves 9 and 12 are also provided to regulate the flow of working liquid, both during the first injection phase and during the second.
It should be noted that, in this form of execution, the part of the diagram (fig. 4) representing the hydraulic control valve 1.1 has been drawn on a larger scale than the part representing the mold and the piston. 'in jection.
The operation of the latter embodiment is as follows. After having poured the molten metal into the cylinder 3, the founder actuates the main valve 8 in the direction of opening. Part of the pressurized liquid passes through the duct 7, passes through the. adjustment valve 9 and opens into cylinder 6 by causing movement of piston 5, respectively of injection piston 4. The movement of piston 4 therefore corresponds to. the first phase of injection.
During this first phase, the pressurized liquid acts on either side of the pet valve 41 in the chamber 44 and the chamber 45. It acts in the same way in the chamber 46 above the primary valve 36, thanks to a channel 47. As soon as the molten metal arrives at contact 23, the secondary circuit of transformer 30 closes and relay 33 is energized. The contacts 34 touch each other and, thus, the primary valve 36 is lifted from its seat by the electromagnet 35.
The pressurized liquid can therefore act in the cylinder 39 and push the piston 40 downwards, which pushes the valve 41 away from its seat 42 against the action of the spring 43.
The pressurized liquid then flows through line 10 and control valve 12 to cylinder 6, which produces the second phase of rapid injection.
It is. It should be noted that in this latter embodiment, use is made of an alternating current source, one could use a direct current source. It would suffice for this to replace the transformer 30 by a switching machine for direct current.
Such an installation operating on a continuous supply would have the advantage of ensuring that the reaction time for controlling the opening of the valve 41 is always strictly the same.
On the other hand, it is of course in this last embodiment that, if one has a sufficiently high force key electromagnetic control valve, it would be possible to omit the servomotor 38 and to control the valve 41. directly by the electro-magnet 35.
Fig. 5 is. a large-scale section of the contact 23.
This contact is formed by an electrode 48 whose tip, located in the chamber 22, is surrounded by a cone 49 of an insulating refractory material of the kind used for the spark plugs of the engines. explosion. This cone 49 is held laterally in a sleeve 50, engaged in a housing 51 of corresponding shape of the mold. A second bush 52 is placed behind the cone 49 to ensure its axial position despite the high injection pressures. These bushes 50 and 52 are held in the mold by means of a threaded part 53 screwed into said mold. An insulating sheath 54 is further provided around the electrode 48.
The outer end of said electrode carries a terminal 55 for connection to the secondary circuit of transformer 30.
It should be noted that, as a variant, the electrode 48, instead of being mounted along the axis of the sleeve 50, could be mounted eccentrically in said sleeve. Thus, it would be possible to adjust the height position of the electrode 48 by rotating the sleeve 50 in its housing 51. This adjustment of the position of the electrode 48 would make it possible to vary the moment by a few thousandths of a second. entry into action of the second injection phase.
In addition, to prevent contact. 23 is not too strongly stressed by the high temperatures of the molten metal, the latter could be arranged in an appendage of the chamber 22 provided for example on the side. of it. This appendage could be only a few tenths of a millimeter thick in the plane of separation of the two parts of the mold. In this way, the molten metal, after having entered said appendix and having established the closing contact. the circuit of the relay 33, would cool rapidly, which would prevent any damage to the contact 23 and also any fouling of the latter.
Numerous alternative embodiments could be provided for the injection control mechanism in two distinct phases. So, for example, the. valve 12 could. be removed, the maximum opening of the valve 11 being, in this case, adjusted according to the injection speed chosen for the second phase.
In another embodiment, bypass 10 could be omitted. The passage from the first injection phase to the second would then be done by acting directly on the valve 9, that is to say by causing. an increase in the passage section of the latter at the end of the first injection phase.
This control of the valve 9 could then be done as has been described for the valve 11, that is to say either by a timing device, or mechanically, as shown in FIG. 2, from pistons 4 and 5, either still pneumatically, hydraulically or electrically.
Fig. 6 shows a variant of detail of the injection cylinder 3 and of its piston 4, which can be applied to all of the embodiments described above.
As can be seen in this figure, a passage 28 is provided in the cylinder 3 to allow the air contained therein to escape directly from said cylinder to the outside, during the first part of the stroke. piston injection 4.
This passage is preferably formed by a groove provided in the wall of cylinder 3, over part of its length, from the inlet of said cylinder. As shown in the drawing, the bottom of this groove is inclined with respect to the axis of cylinder 3.
In all the embodiments described above, the injection piston 4 was always controlled by a piston 5 actuated by a pressurized liquid. However, it is understood that the injection process in. two phases could be applied using machines in which the injection piston would be controlled mechanically or electrically.
In addition, the method described. is not only applicable to injection machines called cold chamber, but also to injection machines called hot chamber, in which the metal held in molten in a container is expelled by successive charges by an injection piston through a gooseneck-shaped duct bringing the molten metal into a mold.
On the other hand, this method is applicable not only with the aid of machines in which the injection piston moves horizontally, but also with the aid of machines in which the injection piston moves in the vertical direction. In addition, the machines allowing the implementation of said process can be either machines built as described above, or old converted machines, which have been fitted with an automatically controlled valve of the type. valve 11.
