EMI0001.0014
cryolithe <SEP> 1 <SEP> à <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> kaolin <SEP> 10 <SEP> à <SEP> 15 <SEP> 0/o
<tb> amiante <SEP> 10 <SEP> à <SEP> 15 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> cellulose <SEP> 8 <SEP> à <SEP> 12 <SEP> 0/o
<tb> silice <SEP> 0,2 <SEP> à <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> talc <SEP> 3 <SEP> à <SEP> 5 <SEP> 0/o
<tb> manganèse <SEP> 0,1 <SEP> à <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> zircon <SEP> 5 <SEP> à <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0/o
EMI0002.0000
EMI0002.0006
amiante <SEP> 10 <SEP> parties <SEP> en <SEP> poids
<tb> cellulose <SEP> 10 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> cryolithe <SEP> 2 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> carbonate <SEP> ferreux <SEP> 38 <SEP> <SEP> 8 <SEP>
<tb> graphite <SEP> 7 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> kaolin <SEP> 10 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> manganèse <SEP> 8,.5 <SEP> <SEP> <B> <SEP> </B>
<tb> silice <SEP> 1 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> talc <SEP> 4 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> zircon <SEP> 9,5 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP> Ce mélange est appliqué au pinceau sur le noyau de métal;
Electrode for metalworking. The present invention, due to <B> Al. </B> René D. Wasserman, relates to a specially coated electrode, intended for machining and surface preparation operations with electric arc on various metals, such as gouging, chamfering, dressing. In some cases, it can also be used advantageously for cutting operations.
The present invention makes it possible to avoid the costly and cumbersome method of machining with oxy-acetylene with all the drawbacks attached to it, by using for machining (metals an electrode whose excellent properties are due to a particular coating leading to the obtaining of excellent characteristics of the machined surfaces and this with considerably increased working speeds.
The electrode according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a lique metal core and a coating containing ferrous carbonate accompanied by other elements capable of destabilizing the are and of exerting a marked deoxidizing action.
The coatings used for the welding rods have not given successful results in machining applications such as dressing, chamfering or gouging. On the other hand, thanks to its particular coating, the electrode according to the invention for metal machining has the desired low penetration of heat, does not produce cracks and. makes it possible to reduce by approximately half the time necessary for the machining operations. This electrode preferably comprises a metal core based on mild steel with a carbon content of between 0.10 and 0.15 0 / o.
Other core metals, such as tungsten, steel alloys, copper or nickel alloys, can be used with good results. A mild steel core is preferred, however, because it constitutes a well-known electrode material and furthermore provides good dressing properties on the surface of the metal to be machined.
The coating of the metal core is advantageously made up of asbestos, cellulose, cryolite, ferrous carbonate, graphite, manganese, silica, talc and zircon. With this coating, surprising results have been observed during machining operations, among which it is necessary to note an extremely stable arc, the complete elimination of oxides from the base metal. and few or no cracks in the base metal. These results are due in large part to the presence of ferrous carbonate.
To form the coating, a composition is ordinarily used which is kept within the following limits, the percentages being expressed by weight:
EMI0001.0014
cryolite <SEP> 1 <SEP> to <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> kaolin <SEP> 10 <SEP> to <SEP> 15 <SEP> 0 / o
<tb> asbestos <SEP> 10 <SEP> to <SEP> 15 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> cellulose <SEP> 8 <SEP> to <SEP> 12 <SEP> 0 / o
<tb> silica <SEP> 0.2 <SEP> to <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> talc <SEP> 3 <SEP> to <SEP> 5 <SEP> 0 / o
<tb> manganese <SEP> 0.1 <SEP> to <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> zircon <SEP> 5 <SEP> to <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0 / o
EMI0002.0000
graphite <SEP> 2.5 <SEP> to <SEP> 7,
5 <SEP> 0 / ô
<tb> ferrous <SEP> carbonate <SEP> 30 <SEP> to <SEP> 50 <SEP> 0 / o All these ingredients are intimately mixed in the pulverulent state and can be put into a paste, to coat the core, by adding water and, where appropriate, with a customary binding substance. These ingredients can also be mixed with a suitable adhesive and sprayed or brushed onto the metal core. The amount of coating to be applied must be proportional to the amount of metal core, so that the desired degree of penetration and a quiet arc is obtained under the given working conditions.
The present electrode can. be used for moving, chamfering and cutting steels, tungsten, copper and its alloys and / or nickel as well as cast iron. The usual machining processes can be applied with remarkably little squirting. The metals thus worked are remarkable for the sharpness of the machined surfaces and can be easily welded with other metal joints prepared in the same way.
<I> Example: </I> A mild steel welding wire containing <B> 0.13 </B> 0 / o carbon and having a diameter of 3 mm is coated with a coating having the following composition :
EMI0002.0006
asbestos <SEP> 10 <SEP> parts <SEP> in <SEP> weight
<tb> cellulose <SEP> 10 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> cryolite <SEP> 2 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> carbonate <SEP> ferrous <SEP> 38 <SEP> <SEP> 8 <SEP>
<tb> graphite <SEP> 7 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> kaolin <SEP> 10 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> manganese <SEP> 8, .5 <SEP> <SEP> <B> <SEP> </B>
<tb> silica <SEP> 1 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> talc <SEP> 4 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP>
<tb> zircon <SEP> 9.5 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP> This mixture is applied with a brush on the metal core;
the thickness of the layer is chosen so as to obtain a final diameter of the coated electrode of 5 mm.
With the electrode thus prepared, machined surfaces are obtained on steel and cast iron with excellent corrosion resistance and few or all cracks at all. Remarkably little squirting occurs, and variations in current peaks do not affect the stability of the lare to the same extent as with electrodes using current spikes. The welding arc is very stable and the slag formed on the base metal floats easily.
