Additional patent to main patent no. 294397. Process for the production of a mainspring for watches and mainspring obtained by this process. The metal crystals are known to be anisotropic with regard to their elastic properties. B. the modulus of elasticity in the cubic crystal lattice has a pronounced maximum in the direction of the cube lattice, but a minimum in the direction of the cube edge.
A number of publications (including Zeitschrift für Metallkunde; Volume 41 [1950], Issue 2, page 45) have confirmed that both for body-centered cubic material and for face-centered cubic material, the modulus of elasticity and the other elastic properties and Strength values have strong anisotropy and both in the body-centered cubic lattice and in the face-centered cubic lattice, for example, the maximum value of the modulus of elasticity is preferably in the direction of the cube lattice.
In the German Patent No. 833056 a method for the produc- tion of springs @ made of steels and metallic materials of anisotropic nature, which are cut out of rolled sheets in the direction of the best elastic properties, is described.
A series of systematic experiments has now made it possible, for example, to place the direction of the cube diagonal predominantly parallel to the rolling direction using a suitable cold stretching process, with a substantial increase in the modulus of elasticity of 10 to 30% in the longitudinal direction of the spring strips produced in this way.
The present invention now relates to a method for producing a mainspring for watches, according to which an alloy containing cobalt; which has a face-centered cubic crystal lattice, homogenized and quenched in the form of a wire, then drawn down cold and cold rolled to form the strip, the ratio of the cross-section reduction when drawing the wire to the cross-section reduction through the flat rolling of the wire s:
It is agreed that the direction of the maximum value of the modulus of elasticity is predominantly oriented parallel to the rolling direction of the strip, which is then treated at temperatures of 200 to 600 C to achieve a modulus of elasticity of at least 21,000 kgimm2. It has also been shown that it is expedient to pull the wire down and roll it in such a way that a total cross-section reduction of at least 80% takes place.
The invention also relates to such drive springs for watches, which are obtained according to the inventive method.
Such mainsprings will preferably consist of alloys which contain at least one element from the 4th row of the B. group of the periodic system and at least one element from group 6a of the periodic system with an atomic weight of 52 to 184.
Heat-treatable iron-nickel-cobalt alloys are particularly suitable for this purpose; in addition, such alloys can also chromium, tungsten and / or molybdenum and small amounts of hardening cause the elements, such as B. beryllium, titanium, niobium, carbon, etc., which can be present individually or optionally combined, keep ent.
The composition of such alloys can of course fluctuate within wide limits, with such alloys being able to produce mainsprings for watches that have an increased modulus of elasticity and are therefore better suited than the mainsprings currently on the market.
It was also found that, for example, from alloys with a face-centered cubic crystal lattice according to the invention, there is a pronounced accumulation of the 110 or 111 direction in the X-ray texture determination, i.e. an orientation of the 110 or 111 direction parallel to The rolling direction shows, whereas this is not the case with the springs of the same alloy composition that have been produced up to now. was.
In addition, it is possible to produce mainsprings which - compared with the previously obtained ones - have increased elastic properties and higher strength values; so z. B. the modulus of elasticity can be increased by suitable texture formation up to 24,000 kg / mm2 and more, while values from 18 to 21,000 have been described as optimal up to now.
As already mentioned, the composition of the alloys used can vary. Alloys with the following maximum contents can be used:

<tb> Co <SEP> 34.1% The well-known mainsprings made of heat-treatable iron-nickel-cobalt alloys have been rolled down to the smallest thicknesses on wide strips and then cut into narrow strips. All of these bands achieve values of the modulus of elasticity of at most 19,000 kgimm2, but mostly only 17,000 to 18,000 kgimm2 for modern heat treatable iron-nickel-cobalt alloys.
The above-mentioned advantages were checked with the face-centered cubic alloy - the following composition: 40% Co, 12% Cr, 8% Mo, 16% Ni, 1% Ti, 0.8% Be, 2% Mn + Si, Remainder Fe.
From this alloy, one half of the material was processed into broad tape and the other half into wire from the same melt. The tape and wire were homogenized at the same temperature, namely at 1000 to 1100 C, and quenched to room temperature. The finished strips were subsequently tempered to maximum hardness by treatment at a temperature of 400 to 600 C. Both the wide and the narrow strip, rolled from the wire, were completely cold deformed by about 90% after homogenization and rolled to a thickness of 0.1 mm. Test tapes of 0.1 X 1.5 mm were produced and their elastic properties were determined after they were coated.
The wires were homogenized and drawn with a diameter of 1 mm, cold drawn down to a diameter of 0.6 mm and then rolled to a thickness of 0.1 mm. The wide ribbon was cut into ribbons 1.5 mm wide.
Testing of the strips gave the following picture Test 1: X-ray texture determination cs) from the strip: no cube diagonals in the rolling direction, b) from the wire: accumulation of the 111 direction (cube diagonal) in the rolling direction . , Test 2: Measurement of the modulus of elasticity: ca) from the strip: E = 18000 to 18500 kg / mm2, b) from the wire:

Test 4: Break test by bending at a sharp angle of 90 a) from the tape: break at 55 to 60, b) from the wire. Break at 80 to 90 (e.g. no break).
In the case of the main springs used up to now and also of the main springs made from known heat treatable Ni-Co-Fe alloys, no orientation of the 111-direction parallel to the rolling direction can be seen. The values of the E-module are e.g. For example, in the case of the Ni-Co-Fe alloys rolled on a wide strip, it is 17,000 to 19,000. The permanent deformation according to test 3 is 2 to 3 for the Ni-Co-Fe alloys.
