Process for preparing a mixture of 2,6-bis (benzoylamino-anthraquinonylamino-1 ') - anthraquinones. The present patent relates to a process for preparing a mixture of 2,6-bis (ben-

where one of the symbols X and one of the symbols Y represent the group CrH, 5CONH-, the other X and the other Y being hydrogen.
This process is characterized in that a mixture of a 1-halo-5-benzoyl-amino-anthraquinone and a 1-halo-8-benzoylamino-anthraquinone is reacted with 2,6-diaminoanthraquinone in the presence of a substance, capable of combining with acids, in an amount sufficient to react with freed hydrohalic acid, and in the presence of a copper catalyst containing copper and iodine in a ratio of 0.9 to 2.0 atoms of iodine for one atom of copper.
Copper-containing catalysts containing copper and iodine in the ratio indicated above are very effective in the present zoylamino-anth-raquinonylamino-1 ') - anthraquinones, which are known compounds of the formula: reaction and allow to 'obtain a product practically free of impurities; which represents an important industrial progress.
The. said process yield drops sharply when approaching the upper limit of 2 atoms of iodine per atom of copper in the catalyst. If more than 2 atoms of iodine were used, the excess would partially end up in the form of free iodine, causing an even more marked decrease in yield. In general, the range from just under one atom to about 1 atom 1/4 iodine per atom of copper represents the optimum range, although this may vary somewhat depending on the nature of the reagents.
As the substance capable of combining with acids, any of the known substances which are ordinarily used for this purpose can be used.
The amount of catalyst is not critical. Generally speaking, an amount of about 0.1 atom of copper per molecule of diaminoanthraquinone is the practical lower limit. It is quite possible that the catalyst actually enters into a reaction and is continuously regenerated, so that its action would be more of a condensing agent than that of the said proprietary catalyst Lin.
Excessive amounts of catalyst simply result in copper and iodine spillage and generally optimum results are obtained in the range of 0.1 to -1.0 copper atom per diaminoanthraquinone molecule.
The reaction can be carried out in the presence of a solvent. The nature of this solvent is not critical. The inert solvents ordinarily used in ulimann a-liter reactions are well suited. They must of course be inert under the reaction conditions, even at the high temperatures of 150-2500 C which are likely to be reached. The preferred solvent is -nitrobenzene. It is also possible to operate without any solvent, but for ease of mechanical handling it is desirable to use a solvent or diluent.
The following example, in which the parts are expressed by weight, shows how the invention can be carried out. Exempt:- 304 parts of a technical mixture of 1-ehloro-5-benzoylamino-aiithraquinone and 1-ehloro-8-benzoylamino- anthraqu # are suspended. nonc (which can be obtained by successive chlorination, reduction and benzoylation of the nitration product of anthraquinone-1-sulfonic acid) in 3600 parts of nitrobenzene. A this suspension we add 95.2 parts of 2,
6 # diaminoanthraquinone, 200 parts of anhydrous sodium carbonate, - 20.4 parts of copper and -50.8 parts of iodine (molecular ratio: J.-Cu = 1.25-: 1). The suspension is heated with stirring to boiling temperature and maintained under reflux at that temperature for 24 hours.
# After cooling, the product is isolated by filtration and washed with nitrobenzene. The nitrobenzene is separated by - entrainment with steam, to get rid of the product, which is filtered through again and dried.
314 parts of reddish-brown final product are obtained, which corresponds to a yield of 88.51 / o of theory. This product, which is a mixture of the compounds whose formula has been given above, can be further purified, if necessary, by dissolving it in 20 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid, diluting the solution to a concentration of acid of 2011 / o and oxidizing the reddish brown sludge obtained naked with sodium dichromate. The # -product thus purified dyes the cotton, after encu vage, in a shade of a rich red-brown exhibiting excellent fastness properties.
It exhibits a high melting point and furnishes, in concentrated sulfuric acid, a solution of brownish-black color turning to blue gray upon addition of formaldehyde, and, in sulfuric acid to </ B> 901 / a, an olive green solution.
The yield of the product obtained in this reaction depends on the iodine-copper ratio. If cupric chloride were used instead of iodine and copper, much lower results would be obtained.
