fig.

Manufacturing process of an elongated polyamide object and apparatus
for the implementation of this method.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of elongated objects, in particular rods, from synthetic linear polyamides with a high melting point, such as polyamides of the nylon type, for example po) yhexamethylene-adipamide or polyhexamethyl- sebacamide.
Due to certain properties of these high melting point polyamides, it has heretofore been difficult to make rods of them, especially by process and with continuous operation. This is because high melting point polyamides have relatively precise melting points and are relatively mobile liquids in the molten state. In addition, these materials exhibit a high coefficient of thermal expansion and are also characterized by substantial shrinkage upon solidification from the molten state.
Still further, high melting point polyamides have a marked tendency to degrade and / or oxidize in the wavy state. As will be understood, these characteristics pose special problems when forming objects and in particular when it comes to rods or other objects of significant section.
The present invention allows a simple solution to these problems and the continued manufacture of rods or the like through the use of relatively simple apparatus. hlle eoneerne therefore a process for manufacturing an elongated object, in particular a rod, in a polyamide with a high melting point, characterized in that the molten polyamide is cooled, while it is driven continuously towards the open discharge end of an elongated tube, with sufficient intensity to cause solidification of the polyamide over a significant portion of the section of the mass,
before exiting therefrom through the discharge end of the tube in the form of an elongated object, the introduction of the molten polyamide into the tube taking place at a pressure high enough to fill the portion of the tube adja - Eente at the inlet end and to generate a pressure applying the material against the wall of the tube in said portion.
The process according to the present invention allows for the continuous manufacture of rods or the like of high melting point polyamides of any desired length. This continuous manufacture is even more advantageous when compared to the known process of die casting individual rods of predetermined length due to the greater production capacity of a given apparatus.
The following description refers to the attached drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view partially in elevation and partially in section showing an apparatus for carrying out the process according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a schematic view illustrating the process of forming the rod, and
fig. 3 is a partial view of certain parts of FIG. 2 and again showing how to initiate continuous rod formation.
The apparatus shown in FIG. 1 comprises a screw feed device designated by 4. This device is mounted on a support and drive mechanism indicated generally at 5. The screw feed device itself comprises a tubular member 6. limiting an elongated cylindrical chamber intended to receive the feed screw 7 aeeouplée to an ent motor. gear (not shown) mounted in support 5.
A hopper 8 is arranged to receive the polyamide to be used, preferably in the form of flakes or granules, this hopper delivering the material into the. chamber of the member 6, and the screw 7 moving the material a, through the device to the left when looking at FIG. 1.
Heating elements, for example electric, as indicated at 9, surround the member 6 and serve to melt the polyamide as it advances. The feed rate and the heating rate are such that complete melting of the polyamide is effected before the discharge end of the feed chamber. The molten polyamide then passes through the perforated dividing plate 10 disposed in the housing 11 joined to the member 6, for example by bolts 12. The connector 11 has a central passage communicating with the inlet end of 'a tube 13. This tube is fixed to the fitting in a liquid-tight manner, for example by welding, as indicated at 14.
The discharge end of the tube is open and the tube is surrounded by water cooling means 15.
In fig. 2 and 3, all the essential structural elements described above in connection with fig. 1 are also present, but shown in a somewhat simplified form. Thus, the screw feed device is shown in FIG. 2 by a cylindrical member 16 in which a screw 17 works, this device being. fed with spangled or granular polyamides through the hopper 18. The material advancing through the screw feed device is melted by means of heaters represented at 19. The molten polyamide is introduced into the inlet end of the tube 20 which can be cooled for example by cooling elements 21.
The polyamide used can of course be mixed with other ingredients, for example small amounts of fillers, such as graphite, antioxidants or modifying substances added for other purposes.
It is indicated that the polyamide used is carefully dried, preferably by heating under vacuum, before the introduction of the flakes or granules into the screw feeder.
Polyhexamethylene-adipamide has a fairly precise melting point at around 265 C and polyhexamethylene-sebaeamide similarly has a fairly precise melting point at around 2in50 C. These two materials contract appreciably on solidification and in addition they have Solid state thermal expansion coefficients such that a drop in temperature below the solidification point is accompanied by considerable additional shrinkage.
For these reasons, the rod formation is advantageously carried out under considerable pressure to avoid the formation of pores especially in the internal regions of the formed rod. This is true in particular for rods of significant section or diameter.
Despite the fact that an open ended tube is used, high pressure can be developed inside the tube, so as to avoid any porosity. This is true even in the manufacture of rod of relatively large diameter, for example even 10 em or a little more. The present process is, however, also effective for the production of rods with a diameter down to even about 6 mm.
Fig. 2 illustrates the manufacture of rods after the start of the operation. The molten nylon: 1 is brought by the screw 7 to the entry end of the tube 20. The external cooling of this tube causes the nylon to solidify racially inward as the material advances through the tube. the tube, the solidified portion being designated by B. The fully solidified rod is represented by ('.
As seen in fig. 2, in the initial cooling zone of tube 20 (from the right end of the tube when looking at Fig. 2), a thin ring of solidified material rapidly forms in the vicinity of the tube wall. The supply of molten material 1 under pressure through the screw 17 tends to increase this ring and to maintain m close frictional contact between this solidified ring and the internal wall of the tube. This frictional contact of the solidified portion with the wall of the tube allows, by reaction, the creation of a relatively high pressure under the action of the continuous feed of sheared material by the screw.
However, the pressure in the melt increases enough to overcome the friction of the initially solidified ring against the tube wall and thus all of the mass of material advances through the tube. As it advances molten material solidifies against the wall of the tube adjacent to the inlet end.
During advancement, moreover, the annular portion of the material which gradually solidifies becomes thicker and as this ring becomes thicker, its narrowing reaches a value high enough to overcome the tendency of the internal pressure to expand the material. ring, so that the outer surface of the formed rod gradually narrows, separating from the wall of the tube, as shown in fig. 2.
From the above, it can be seen that for the manufacture of a rod of a given diameter, a forming tube is used having an internal diameter slightly greater than that of the desired rod.
The aforementioned action depends on several operating conditions, namely the pressure, the feed rate and the cooling rate. These factors naturally vary depending on the section or diameter of the formed rod. The feed rate and the cooling rate should be adjusted so that the frictional contact of the solidified ring in the initial cooling region allows a significant pressure to be created under the effect of the material feed. additional melt in the internal region or core of the formed rod, thus avoiding the appearance of pores as a result of the narrowing. The creation of pressures of the order of 14 to 280 atmospheres is suitable for this purpose.
The cooling rates of the forming tube and the rate of introduction of the molten nylon influence the length of the portion of the solidified ring which is held expanded against the wall of the tube. Low cooling rates and high feed rates tend to increase the length of the solidified annular portion in contact with the tube wall and thus also tend to increase the frictional resistance to advancing material through the tube. forming. The excessive increase in
this frictional resistance tends to block the operation and it is therefore preferable to use relatively high cooling rates.
For the initiation of the formation of the rod,
there is a sliding plug 22 (see
fig. 3) in the inlet end of the tube
forming 20, this stopper preferably being
in close friction contact with the wall
internal tube and serving temporarily
means for creating pressure in
the molten material brought by the screw. The contact of the molten material with the stopper
also serves to solidify the nylon against the plug and thus to close the end of the core
melted stem formed. The plug 22 can
be made of a metal having m coefficients of expansion greater than that of the tube.
Thus, we can use a brass plug
in a steel tube. Such a stopper can also be made of polyetrafluoroethylene.
The start plug advances through the tube and is expelled at the discharge end after which continuous rod production continues as described with reference to fig. 2.
