Process for the preparation of an etherified formaldehyde condensation product. It is known that condensation products of formaldehyde containing methylol groups with amino-1,3,5-triazines, so-called methylolaminotriazines (oxymethylaminotriazines),
etherified with alcohols under acidic conditions. For example, when hexamethylol melamine is etherified with methanol, it is possible to obtain up to 6 moles of methoxy groups, but with ethyl, propyl and butyl alcohol, fewer alkoxy groups per mole of melamine can be obtained, whereas when higher alcohols are used, that means those with at least 5 carbon atoms,
on average only about 1.5-0.5 moles of alkoxy groups per mole of melamine, that is to say about 0.5-0.17 alkoxy groups per NH2 group of the melamine, can be introduced.
It is also known that mixtures of methylolaminotriazines which are etherified with lower alcohols containing at most 4 carbon atoms, ie mixtures of lower alkoxymethyl aminotriazines, with higher alcohols which have at least 5 carbon atoms, with cleavage of the lower alcohol.
The procedural measures given in the literature for this Umätherung do not allow, in 1 mole of the lower alkoxymethylamino-triazine, on average more than about 1.5-2 moles of the higher alcohol, that is more than about 0.5-0.6 Moles per NH2 group of the aminotriazine.
It has now been shown that it is possible, by etherification, of such mixtures of formaldehyde condensation products of amino-1,3,5-triazines containing at least 2 NI-I, groups, in which, on average, at least one oxymethyl group per NH2 group of the aminotriazine is etherified with a lower alcohol containing at most 4 carbon atoms, with higher alcohol
Alcohols containing at least 5 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst of acidic nature should be introduced on average at least 1 mol of the higher alcohol per NH2 group of the amine triazine if the conversion to be carried out in the heat is carried out under practically anhydrous conditions for so long,
until at least 1 mol of the lower alcohol has been split off per NH2 group of the aminotriazine and most of it has been removed from the reaction mixture, whereupon the reaction mixture is freed from the catalyst.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of a mixture of etherified melamine-formaldehyde condensation products, which contains on average at least 3 oxymethyl groups etherified with stearyl alcohol per mole of melamine,
by transetherification of a mixture of methoxymethylmelamines containing on average at least 3 methoxy groups per mole of melamine with stearyl alcohol in the presence of a catalyst of an acidic nature, characterized in that the conversion to be carried out in the heat is carried out under practically anhydrous conditions for so long
until at least 3 mol of methyl alcohol are split off per 1 mol of melamine and for the most part removed from the reaction mixture by distillation, and that the reaction mixture is freed from the catalyst.
The mixtures of methoxymethyl melamines which can be considered as starting materials for the transetherification and which contain on average at least 3 oxymethyl groups etherified with methanol per mol of melamine,
can be obtained by known methods by an action of at least 3 moles of formaldehyde to 1 mole of melamine and by simultaneous or subsequent etherification of the resulting methylolmelamines or mixtures thereof with methyl alcohol. Inorganic and organic acids can serve as catalysts or
Substan zen which give acids during the reaction or act analogously to acids, for example acid anhydrides or Friedel-Crafts catalysts. Your selection is advantageously made on the basis of practical considerations such as removability, price, and influence on the end product. So that the Umätherung can be carried out under practically anhydrous conditions, it has proven to be advantageous to use anhydrous catalysts as possible.
Advantageous catalysts are, for example, concentrated hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, hypophosphorous acid, phthalic acid or phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, chloroacetic acid, formic acid, etc. The catalysts are generally hardeners for the lower alkoxymethyl used as starting material. aminotriazine as well as for the end products.
It has therefore proven to be advantageous not to use too large amounts of these catalysts. Usually a few parts per thousand to percent are sufficient, calculated on the entire reaction mixture. In order to obtain stable, neutral to weakly basic end products, it is advantageous to use catalysts which, after the reaction has taken place, that is, before further processing of the reaction mixture, by simple measures such as distilling off, neutralizing and, if necessary, filtering off the precipitated salts, washing finite water or solvents, can be removed from the reaction mass.
This is especially true when using strong acids as catalysts, which have to be neutralized particularly carefully. These measures to remove the catalysts must not have any adverse effect on the end products.
In general, it has been found to be advantageous, after the reaction and, if necessary, after removing the cata- factors from the reaction mixture, any excess of the unconverted higher alcohol by simple measures such as distillation, preferably under reduced pressure, or washing or washing Remove extraction with suitable solvents from the reaction mass.
The following example is intended to explain the invention in more detail. The details in percent are percentages by weight and the temperatures in degrees are degrees Celsius. Example: About 110 moles = 39 g of a mixture of methoxymethylmelamines with an average content of about 5.3 moles of methoxy groups per mole of melamine are combined with 1 mole = 270 g of stearyl alcohol and 0,
67 g of 60% hypophosphorous acid were warmed in a stirred flask fitted with a thermometer in an oil bath. The apparatus is provided with a descending cooler with template and additionally with a template cooled with carbonic acid acetone and is kept under a pressure of about 400-500 mm Hg column. At about 110 the reaction begins with elimination of methanol and distillation of the same and is practically completed within 2 hours with an increase in the internal temperature up to 160. By the time the distillation stops, 19.5 cm3 of almost pure methanol have distilled over. 0.2 g of pure sodium hydroxide, dissolved in 3 cm of alcohol, are then added.
After thorough mixing or neutralization, the reaction mixture is filtered hot to remove salts formed. The excess stearyl alcohol is then distilled off in a good vacuum. 143 g of stearyl alcohol are obtained back and a residue of 141 g of a mixture of stearyl oxynethyl melamines which contains on average about 4.5 moles of stearyl alcohol per mole of melamine bound in ethereal fashion.
The product is a white, thermosetting, hard wax that is insoluble in water and lower alcohols, but is readily soluble in solvents with a pronounced organic character, especially in aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons such as petrol, and has strong water-repellent properties. It can be used in many ways, for example as a working wax or as a water-repellent component in finishes, optionally in emulsified form.
A product with practically the same properties is obtained if, instead of the mixture of methoxymethylmelamines used in the above example and having an average content of about 5.3 methoxy groups per mole of melamine, a mixture is used which has an average of about 4.2 methoxy groups per mole Contains melamine.
