Arc welding process and apparatus for carrying out this process. The present invention relates to a method (the welding with the ar in which an arc is established between an electrode of fusible metal and a base metal, this method being characterized in that the arc is, at least on a part of its length, enveloped by a mass of an additional gas maintained at a sufficiently low pressure and distributed so as to prevent the arc from being in contact with the atmosphere.
This invention also includes. an apparatus for carrying out this process. This apparatus comprises an electrode mounted in series with the base metal for the purpose of forming an electrical are between them, and is characterized by means for enclosing the gas produced by the are in an area located above the metal. basic. surrounding the arc and extending over at least a substantial part of the length of the are, these means comprising a supply device for introducing an additional gas stream and a device for adjusting the pressure and the outlet. addition of the additional gas stream so as to exclude atmospheric air from the area of the area.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, several embodiments of the apparatus serving to implement the welding process which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a following apparatus. a first embodiment. Fig. \? is a cross-sectional view of an apparatus according to a second embodiment, this section. being taken according to '? -2 of FIG. 3.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of this same device.
Fig. 4 is a partial section showing an alternative construction of the apparatus according to FIG. 1.
Fig. 5 is. a vertical section of another construction variant of the apparatus according to FIG. 1.
Fig. 6 is a partial elevation of the apparatus according to FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a following apparatus. a third embodiment making it possible to obtain an additional gas curtain which encloses the gas from the arc.
Fig. 8 is a section similar to FIG. 7 showing an apparatus according to a fourth embodiment, in which an additional gas curtain is also used.
The welding apparatus according to fig. 1 is intended for the welding of a sheet of low caliber by means of a welding rod of small diameter and a low voltage current. The bare welding rod or electrode 20 passes between two feed rollers 21 forming part of a conventional automatic device (not shown); this electrode passes through the axial orifice 22 of the tubular electrode holder 23; the forward speed of this electrode is synchronized with the melting speed of the latter under the action of the arc 25. The tubular electrode holder 23 is made of a good conductive metal, preferably of copper. .
To avoid the. rise of the gases by the tubular electrode holder 23, can be placed at the top. of the electrode holder a plug 26 which blocks an asbestos ring 27.
For the establishment of the soldering circuit, an electric cable 28 is. connected to a plate 30 carrying an opening, which plate is fixed to the electrode holder 23 by means of the screws 31; a second electric cable 32, placed at the other terminal of the circuit, is fixed to the base metal 33 by a suitable terminal 35 and a bolt 36.
The electrode holder 23 is surrounded at an intermediate level by a pad 37 fixed in an adjustable manner by means of a locking screw 38. A cylindrical wall 40 is screwed or otherwise mounted on the net pad. 37; the chamber, thus constituted, is placed above the surface of the base metal 33 with a relatively small clearance. A device allowing the introduction of an additional gas into the chamber thus closed comprises a duct 41, integral with the cylindrical wall 40, provided with a gas valve 42 connected to a pipe 43.
For relatively low currents, the wall 40 of the cylindrical chamber can be metallic, while the pad 37 is of an insulating material. For high currents, however, the chamber may be made only of ceramic.
The additional gas supplied by pipe 43 can be any gas that is lighter than the gas produced by the arc. We can have either a combustible gas such as hydrogen or an inert gas. Helium can be used successfully. Since the gas produced by the arc 25 is much heavier than the additional gas introduced above, these two gases remain separate, provided that evacuation of the gases from the chamber at an intermediate level is ensured and provided that the additional gas is not introduced in such a way as to cause turbulence at the discharge level.
In the construction of FIG. 1, there are provided a number of discharge openings 45 arranged in a circle on the cylindrical wall 40 approximately at the level of the lower end of the electrode 20, i.e. approximately at the level of the upper end of the arc 25. Thus, the gas contained in the chamber consists of an upper volume 46 of additional gas and a lower volume 47 of gas produced by the arc; these two volumes are. separated by a separation surface 48 disposed at the level of the discharge openings 45. The gases from the two volumes 46 and 47 exit. at the same time through the openings 45, as indicated by the arrows in fig. 1.
To operate the device of fig. 1, the valve 42 is opened to supply the additional gas and, then, the arc is established. It is obviously important that the additional gas inlet flow rate is low enough for the latter to be evacuated through the openings 45; on the other hand, this flow must be large enough to keep the pressure inside the chamber slightly higher than. atmospheric pressure avoiding the entry of air. We have. found that it is preferable to use a pressure slightly higher than atmospheric pressure; however, too high a pressure in the chamber increases the area of the are and, consequently, decreases the current density.
In general, the size or total section of the discharge openings 4 #) is mainly determined by the magnitude of the weld current. In an embodiment such as that of FIG. 1, to weld N 308 stainless steel, 18 gauge, with an electrode 2.3 min in diameter, and a current of 110 amperes, six exhaust openings of 1.6 mm in diameter are provided.
We see an arrival of helium at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure and at a flow rate of 1 liter at. 1 and a half liters per minute (flow rate reduced to atmospheric pressure). With such an arrangement and -Lin such adjustment, a high quality weld is obtained; without varying the setting, the intensity of the welding current can be varied at will between 95 and 125 amperes without the quality of the welding being impaired.
17n as regards the inlet flow of the additional gas, the discharge flow rate and the intensity of the current, which intensity acts on the flow rate. of gas produced by the arc, it will be noted that the chamber is much larger than the volume of gas produced by the arc. it contains, this volume being occupied mainly by the additional gas. It will be noted that the gas discharge rate through the openings 45 varies with the pressure in the chamber, this pressure in turn varying according to the combined flow rates of the additional gas and of the gas produced by the arc.
The fact that the operation of the device is not sensitive may be partially explained by the large volume. of the chamber and by the existence of a large additional volume of gas; this can be further explained by the automatic partial compensation in the variations in the flow rate of the additional gas inlet and the production of gas from the arc causing similar variations in the flow rate of the gases out of the openings 45 It has also been found that the apparatus allows notable variations in the clearance existing between the lower part of the cylindrical chamber and the surface of the metal. basic; thus, irregularities and. variations in the surface of the base metal do not affect the quality of the. welding.
The separation area 48 between the upper volume of helium and the lower volume of gas produced by the arc varies in height, and perhaps in shape. The result is automatic adjustment of the various factors without the effectiveness of the weld being affected.
Figs. 2 and 3 show an apparatus for welding larger parts with a larger welding rod and higher current. The heavier electrode 50 is brought, under the action of the conventional rollers 51, into the tubular electrode holder 52 after having passed through a seal 53; this electrode establishes an arc 55 above the part to be welded of the base metal 56. The weld circuit comprises a conventional cable 57 connected to the electrode holder 52 by a terminal 58.
At the lower end of the electrode holder 52 is a chamber 60 having a neck 61 allowing its mounting on the electrode holder by means of an insulating sleeve 62, for example made of asbestos. The chamber 60 consists of what may be called a cylindrical inner wall 63 and a circular flange 65, threaded so as to receive a ring 66 having an inner rim 67. The ring 66 makes it possible to hold, so that an adjustment can be made by rotation, an outer cylindrical wall 68 having the shape of a cylindrical ring with an outer rim 70.
An important advantage of the arrangement described is that it allows the section of the discharge openings to be easily varied according to the wishes of the operator. For this, the cylindrical inner wall 63 is provided with a series of orifices 71; the outer cylindrical wall 68 is provided with a corresponding series of apertures 72, so that the outer cylindrical wall can be adjusted so that the apertures 71 and 72 overlap each other in different amounts. Fig. 2 shows, by way of example, two orifices 71 and 72 which partially overlap, which offers the gas an outlet section towards the atmosphere of average value.
The additional gas can be introduced into the chamber formed by the partition 60 in any way which avoids turbulence at the outlet ports. In the embodiment shown, the additional gas comes from an inlet pipe (not shown); it enters an annular passage 73 of the upper wall of the chamber through a fitting 75 and it descends through a series of spaced orifices 76. The chamber 60 is cooled by water, and, for this purpose, it has a water jacket 77, circular in shape, the two ends of which are separated by a wall 78.
The cooling water comes from a suitable source (not shown); it is introduced into one of the ends of the sleeve 77 by a connector 80 and it flows to the second connector 81.
The operation of the device of FIGS. 2 and 3 on reading the description relating to FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 shows how the construction shown in FIG. 1 can be modified so that the level of the separation surface 48 between the additional upper gas 46 and the gas produced by the lower arc 47 is variable. The construction is very similar to that of the. fig. 1 and, moreover, corresponding reference numbers are used to designate the corresponding elements.
The cylindrical wall 40a of FIG. 4 carries a flange 85 which is threaded so = ù. receive a suitable ring 86. The ring 86 has an inner rim on which bears, so as to be able to rotate and be adjusted, a cylindrical part 87. Thus, the lower part of the cylindrical wall 40a constitutes what is may call an inner wall, while the cylindrical part 87 forms an outer wall which rotates relative to the first.
It will be noted that the two cylindrical walls of FIG. 4 are provided with pairs of elongated openings which intersect, one opening of each pair being on each of the cylindrical walls; it will also be noted that at least one of the openings of a pair is inclined such that the relative rotation of the two cylindrical walls causes the height of the intersection of two openings to vary. Thus, FIG. 4 shows a series of inclined openings 88 placed on the inner cylindrical wall and a second series of corresponding openings 90, but inch formed in opposite direction and placed on the outer cylindrical wall.
It is clear that the ring 86 can be loosened so as to allow adjustment by rotation of the cylindrical part 87. Thus, it is possible to raise or lower the level of the gas evacuation openings materialized by the intersection of the openings 88. and 90. Thus, the partition surface 48 can move up or down. at will so that the upper volume of additional gas 46 advances more or less on the arc 25.
As explained above,]. 'Controlled advance of additional gas over].' Causes damping. arc blowing as a result of dilution caused by the additional gas; this results in a decrease in intensity (the current of the arc and, consequently, a corresponding reduction in the flow of metal carried by the arc.
Fig. 5 shows another embodiment in which, as in the previous descriptions, an additional volume of gas 46 is maintained in a closed space above a lower volume of gas 47 produced by the arc; a separation surface 48 is located between the two volumes. Fig. 5 shows the conventional, tubular electrode holder 9? crossed by the bare electrode 93 which establishes an arc 95 reaching the base metal 96.
The electrode holder is surrounded by a thick insulating sleeve 97 which carries a metal cylinder 98 forming a closed chamber above the surface of the base metal. On the cylinder 98 is connected a sighting tube 100 whose outer end is closed by a number of lenses 101, at least one of which is colored. The lens assembly is held between two rings 102 of suitable material by means of a sight 103 screwed onto the sight tube.
Additional gas from a suitable source (not shown) is fed into metal cylinder 98 from above, through line 105 connected to sighting tube, as shown; the. supply line is fitted with a suitable control valve 106. The only outlet for the gas contained in the chamber formed by the metal cylinder 98 is the clearance between the lower edge of the cylinder and the base metal 96 ; to this is added a notch 107 which is cut in the lower edge of the rear side of the chamber as the latter moves so that the formed weld bead can pass.
The notch 107 reaches in height approximately the level of the upper end of the arch 95, and its dimension is such that it can sufficiently reduce the outflow of gases by preventing the entry of air to it. interior of the room.
The sighting tube 100 allows the operator to observe the weld carefully and, if desired, the welding operation can also be viewed at a low angle through the notch 107.
In each of the variants of the chamber shown in FIGS. 1 to 6, the molten metal in the region of the weld inside the chamber is effectively protected and the arc is completely isolated from the atmosphere. In all respects the arc is normal in that it is equivalent to a highly efficient arc produced in the conventional manner by using an electrode having a heavy stripper coating. Thus, the temperature of the arc is normal both on the electrode terminal and on the base metal terminal and this results in the formation of a crater of normal surface and depth on the base metal.
This process makes it possible to produce a bead of hard sou having. Him very fine grain which indicates that the arc carries the molten metal coming from (the). 'Electrode in the form of particles of very small dimension. The deposits of the hard solder are dense and have a very fine grain; this weld does not is not porous The process can be applied by using electrodes corresponding to electrodes of other processes with a diameter between 1.6 and 8 mm.
lees fig. 7 and 8 are intended to indicate from which tisanière the additional gas can be used in the form of a curtain instead of a closed volume; this gas curtain makes it possible to enclose the weld zone which, consequently, is not in contact with air. Fig. 7 shows the conventional tubular electrode holder 7.10 crossed by the bare electrode 111 which makes it possible to establish the arc 112 on the base metal 113.
Around the lower end of the electrode holder 110 is an annular chamber 115 formed by a part 116 in the form of a cup and a ring 117 screwed onto this part; the ring 117 is fixed to the electrode holder by a screw 118; a pipe 120 is placed on the lateral part of the part 116 and allows the arrival of the additional gas; she is. fitted with a suitable control valve 121.
Below the pipe 120, the part 116 has a circular rim 122 which is threaded so as to receive a cylindrical part 123. The cylindrical part 123 forms with the cup-shaped part 116 an annular passage 125 forming a nozzle whose The lower outlet end is suitably narrowed, as shown. The gas coming from the pipe 120 enters the annular chamber 115, producing an effect. cooling on the electrode holder 110. It flows out of the annular chamber 115 to enter the passage 125 through a series of orifices 126 arranged in a circle on the part 116. From the passage 125, the gas is expelled as of an annular jet or continuous cylindrical curtain 127.
It is clear that the cylindrical gas curtain 127 constitutes, with the metal placed at the lower part of the electrode holder and the base metal 113, a chamber which moves and encloses the weld zone. Note that the gas curtain is located at a certain distance from the arc 112, this distance being sufficient to avoid contact between the gas curtain and the arc.
The gas produced by the are constitutes a volume 128 which surrounds the metal in the weld zone; the gas produced by the arc must of course exit, but it can exit easily through the cylindrical gas curtain 127. Thus, the gas curtain allows a continuous exit of the gas produced by the arc while protecting the inner layer 128 of gas produced by the arc from the outside air. It should be further noted that the cylindrical curtain 127 constitutes at all times a completely closed wall, since the gas stream exists regardless of any irregularity or variation in the surface of the base metal.
In the construction shown in FIG. 8, the bare electrode 130 is brought in the conventional manner into the electrode holder 131., so as to form an arc 132 with the base metal 133. This embodiment is intended. to form a gas curtain 13: i having a conical and divergent shape by firing the arc 132. Any suitable apparatus can be used which makes it possible to obtain such a gas curtain.
In the form shown in FIG. 8, the electrode holder 131 has a reduced diameter at its lower end, so as to constitute the inner wall of an annular gas chamber 136. The lower end of the electrode holder 131 is. further reduced so as to receive a part 137, of conical shape, forming a nozzle. The outer wall of the annular chamber 136 is constituted by a cylinder 138 screwed onto the electrode holder as shown; the lower end of this cylinder is beveled so as to cooperate with the part 137 to form the divergent or conical nozzle 140. The additional gas is brought to. the upper part of the annular gas chamber 136 by a pipe 141. controlled by a valve 142.
It is clear that in the embodiments shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, the specific weight of the additional gas must not necessarily be less than that of the gas produced by the arc. In fact, a relatively heavy gas can easily be used especially when the additional gas is directed outward from the arc of the. manner shown in FIG. 8.
