8. 3,3'- Dimethy 1- 5,5'- dichlor-oxacy anin-p- toluolsulfonat (Smp.
Process for the preparation of an optical brightening agent. It was found that compounds of the general formula
EMI0001.0003
in which R 1 and R 2 are alkyl groups and R 3 to R 3 are hydrogen atoms or substituents such as alkyl, alkoxy, amino and substituted amino groups or halogen atoms, and X is an acid radical.
The compound is colorless in ethyl alcohol solution (absorption maximum not above 4000 A) as components of optical brightening agents for natural fibers and synthetic fibers of non-polymeric structure and especially for textiles made from polyamides (nylon) or cellulose acetate , are, ideally suited.
The preferred compounds are those in which the absorption maximum is below 3900 Å, and of these, the compounds in which some of the substituents R3 to RIO are lower alkyl groups and the remainder consists of hydrogen atoms are particularly preferred. The nature of the acid radical X seems to be of little importance apart from its effect on the solubility of the compounds. There come z.
B. halides or sulfates are considered; From a practical point of view, the p-toluenesulfonates are generally to be preferred because they usually have a sufficient degree of solubility in water.
Examples of suitable compounds are given below.
1. 3,3'-Dimethyl oxacyanine iodide (melting point 317 with decomposition), the corresponding methosulfate (melting point 323 with decomposition).
2. Methyl 3'-ethyl oxacyanine iodide (m.p. 301 with decomposition).
3. 3,3'-6,6 '- tetramethyl - oxacyanine iodide (m.p. 317 with decomposition).
4. 3,3 ', 5,5', 6,6'-hexamethyl-oxacyaninjodid (melting point 322 with decomposition), the corresponding methosulfate (melting point 313 with decomposition), and the corresponding p-toluenesulfonate (melting point 320 with decomposition).
5. 3,3'-Diethyl-5,6-diethyl-oxacyanine iodide (m.p. 292 with decomposition).
6. 3,3'-Diethyl-5,6,5 ', 6'-tetramethyl-oxacy- anin.jodid (mp. 311 with decomposition).
7. 3,3'-diethyl-6,6'-dimethyl-oxacyanine iodide (Sinp. 306 with decomposition).
8. 3,3'-Dimethyl 1- 5,5'-dichloro-oxacy anine-p-toluenesulfonate (m.p. over 300).
9. 3,3 ', 5,5' - Tetramethyl- oxacy anine bromide (m.p. 298 with decomposition) and the corresponding p-toluenesulfonate (m.p. 255 to 256 with decomposition).
10. 3,3 ', 5,5', 6-pentamethyl oxacyanine p -toluenesulfonate (melting point 280 with decomposition). 11. 3,3 ', 5,6 - tetramethyl 1-oxacyanine - p - toluenesulfonate (m.p. 314 with decomposition). 12. 3, 3 '- Dimethyl-5-acetamino-oxacyanine-p-toliolsulfonate (m.p. 283 with decomposition).
13. 3,3'-Dimethyl-5-bromo-oxaeyanine-p-toluenesulfonate (melting point 298 with decomposition). The compounds of the above general formula can be prepared by condensing a quaternary salt of a 2-methylbenzoxazole with a quaternary salt of a 2-alkylthiobenzoxazole in the presence of a base such as pyridine.
Compounds of the general formula mentioned. which are colorless, white or pale yellow Lich have, as has been found, a strong fluorescence in daylight and a little less fluorescence in artificial, z. B. electric light. When used on natural fibers and synthetic fibers with a non-polymer structure, they share a fluorescence that varies in color between purple, light blue and deep blue. Applied to materials that are already practically white in themselves, but where the white has a slight tinge of yellow or brown, the compounds serve to compensate for the yellow or brown color, so that the apparent white of the materials is very considerably enhanced becomes. When applied to dyed fabrics, the compounds have the effect of improving the purity of the color.
The compounds, which are salts of organic acids rule, are more or less easily in polar organic solvents, such as. B: lower alcohols, esters and ketones, soluble; In addition, they are sufficiently soluble in water to enable their application to the named fibrous materials from aqueous solution. In aqueous solution they show a remarkable, non-selective affinity for the various types of fibers listed above, so that they can be applied from very dilute solution without the assistance of any auxiliaries and without being dispersed in finely divided form.
Very small amounts of this compound are sufficient to achieve the desired improvement in the fibers. So is z. B. the treatment of the materials with one of the compounds mentioned in NV water or an organic solvent with a solution concentration of 1: 1000 to 1: 1,000,000 is generally sufficient.
At such a concentration they can easily be made of wool, cotton regenerated cellulose fibers and, surprisingly, also of synthetic linear poly amide fibers, such as. B. nylon and Perlon, and - what is much more surprising - of fibers that have a cellulose ester base, such as. B. cellulose acetate fibers, added who the.
The present patent is now a process for the preparation of an optical brightening agent by adding a fluorescent compound to a carrier, characterized in that the fluorescent compound has the general formula
EMI0002.0036
has, where R, and R., alkyl radicals and X mean an acid radical, and the nuclei A and B are substituted at most by non-Ehromophoric groups, the connec tion in Äthy lalkohollösung is colorless and not an absorption maximum. above 4000A.
As a carrier for the fluorescent compounds come in particular solvents for these compounds, for. B. water or organic solvents, and also detergents such as soap in question.
Optical brightening agents produced according to the invention, which represent aqueous solutions, are well absorbed by fiber materials that are made on the basis of cellulose esters or synthetic linear polyamide (nylon), whereby he products are obtained that are not only very well brightened, but theirs The lightening effect is also characterized by good lightfastness and washfastness. The effectiveness of the defined compounds varies to some extent and of the compounds listed above, numbers 4, 5, 6, 9, 11 have been found to be the most useful.
From an economical point of view, the compounds of No. 9 are preferable because they are cheaper to manufacture. The p-toluenesulfonate salts have sufficiently good solubility in water to make their use of this medium a good technical way of working.
Example 1 0.01 g of 3,3 ', 5,5', 6,6'-hexamethyl oxacyanine p-toluenesulfonate are dissolved in 1000 cubic meters of water. If you increase this solution to 80 and keep it at this temperature for 1/2 hour, the treated yarn shows a very good lightening effect in daylight. Example 2: 0.001 g of 3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyl oxacyanine p-toluenesulfonate are dissolved in 1000 cm3 of water.
If a polyamide fabric (nylon) is treated in this solution, it shows a smooth brightening effect in daylight, which has very good lightfastness and good wash resistance.
Example 3: 0.01 g 3,3 ', 5,5', 6,6'-hexamethyl-oxacyanine-p-toluenesulfonate and 1 g of Glauber's salt are dissolved in 1000 cubic meters of water. If bleached cotton is treated in this solution, it keeps it a dazzling white appearance in daylight.
Example 4: An aqueous solution containing 0.1 g of 3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyl-oxacyanine-p-toluenesulfonate is stirred into 100 g of soap and the homogeneous paste is suitably mixed Way z. B. converted into powder form by atomization. The soap powder obtained is distinguished by a much whiter aspect compared to the untreated soap.
Example 5: 100 g of a synthetic sweets, e.g. B. an alkylbenzenesulfonate with. a solution of 0.01 g of 3,3 ', 5,5'-tetramethyloxacyanine-p-toluenesulfonate stirred to a homogeneous paste and dried by spraying. The powdered detergent obtained is strongly lightened compared to the untreated and has a pure white appearance.
