I R: Si, désiré.
;a zeux diminue fortement.

Process for obtaining a methylphenylpolysiloxane resin by means of bi- and tetrafunctional compounds. It is known that in organo-polysiloxanes used as resins in heat curable worms, the ratio. the number of organic radicals with silicon atoms R : Si varies between 1 and 2.
This ratio is carried out by using, for the preparation of the resin, a mixture of bi- and trifunctional compounds such as R2SiC12 and RSiC13 in variable proportions depending on the value of the ratio to be obtained.
It has already been proposed to achieve the desired ratio R: Si from a mixture of bi- and tetrafunctional compounds, but the use of tetrafunctional compounds such as SiCl4 has heretofore been very limited due to this.
that it did not make it possible to obtain all the desired ratios without also involving trifunctional compounds. In processes involving hydrolysis reactions, the yield of fixed organosilicon compounds of the varnish relative to the amount of raw materials is particularly low.
This efficiency is usually less than 50% and often barely exceeds -10%. To avoid these drawbacks, we were therefore,. Until now.
obliged to use trifunctional compounds of the RSiC13 type, although it is however economically very desirable to be able to use an appreciable quantity of tetrafunctional compounds.
The present invention relates to a process using mixtures of bi- and tetrafunctional compounds with a view to obtaining, without notable losses in the form of precipitated siliceous compounds, a methylphenyl-polysiloxane resin, constituting a known, suitable product. For the preparation. heat-curable varnishes with a moderate firing loss of organo-silicic compounds.
This process is characterized in that a mixture of bifonetional compounds of formula (CH3) 2S'X2 and (C6II5) 2S'X "2 is formed with a compound of formula SiX4, the substituents X, X 'and X "being chosen so that they are eliminated during the condensation by reaction of the substituents X, on the one hand, with the substituents X 'and X", on the other hand, with liberation of an organic halide and , except for an oxygen atom,
remaining to form Si-O-Si bridges.
The initial mixture may therefore contain compounds of the type (CH3) 2Si (-OR ') 2, (C6Hs) 2Si (0R') 2 and SiHa14 (I) or of the type (CH,) 2SiHal.2, (C6H5) 2SiHal2 and Si (0R ') 4' (II) R 'denoting an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkylaryl radical and Hal a halogen atom.
In both cases, the tetra-functional compound can condense only with the bifunctional compound and the functional groups are removed in the form of a H'Hal halide, the oxygen of the OR 'group serving to form Si bridges. - 0 - Yes.
It has been found that it is in fact not necessary to avoid any condensation between molecules of the tetrafunctional wedge-layers and that it is sufficient to prevent precipitation of silica and a drop in yield.
correspondingly, that the compound is partially condensed beforehand with molecules of bifunctional compounds. It is therefore possible to stop, by cooling, a condensation started with mixture I, to mix the product obtained with a condensate of mixture II, also still little developed, and to continue the condensation process by resuming the heating. fage.
It has, moreover, been observed that mixtures containing simultaneously the compounds of the types enumerated above under (I) and (II) can be condensed with evolution of organic halide without the formation of appreciable quantities of siliceous precipitate. These different means make it possible to obtain the resin having the relation. I R: Yes, desired.
For carrying out the condensation, the mixture is preferably heated in the presence of a catalyst, for example a chloride of a trivalent metal or a mixture of chlorides of several of these metals. The presence of a solvent during the reaction is generally not necessary, but in special cases it may be of some use.
The use of a silicon tetrahalide for the formation of organopolysiloxanes by condensation reactions accompanied by evolution. of an organic halide has already been recommended previously. But, in this case, it was a question of reacting it with organosilane derivatives which were partially hydrated lysed and, therefore, already phis or less poly merized.
Example 1: A mixture of 51.6 _ of (CH3) ZSiCl is converted. and 17 g of SiCl 4 en (CH3) 2Se (OC2H ;;) 2 and Si (OC2H5) .e by heating it in the presence of 55.2 g of ethyl alcohol and adding 107.6 g to it. of (C6H5) 2SiC12 (purity:
94 / o) and 17 g of SiCl4. This reaction mixture has a ratio
EMI0002.0030
and contains. 201 / o of silicon in the form of a tetrafonetional derivative. A mixture of 0.01 g of FeCl3 and 4 g of AlCl3 is introduced as catalyst and the mixture is slowly heated. The reaction begins at around 100 C and C2H5C1 coro n ience to be released.
A moderate heat is maintained in order to have a steady evolution of ethyl chloride. After about -1 hours, the. temperature reached 150 C and the release stopped. Cool, add 100 cc of toluene to prevent gelation of the reaction product.
At this time, the C12 content is 5% of the amount present at the start. The solution is then poured slowly into ice water to remove remaining chlorine and catalysts. After filtration and removal of the solvent, 117 g of clear resin are collected, not very viscous and giving, after cooking to. 250 C, smooth, shiny and fairly hard layers.
Example ?: A mixture of 25.5 g of SICl.i, 25.9g of (CH3) 2Si (OC2I-I5) 2 and 17.6 g of (C6H5) 2Si (OC2H5) is prepared ) 2 to which are added 0.02 g of FeCl3 and 2 g of AICL.
31.2 g of Si (OC.H5) 4, 22.6 - of (CH3) 2SiC12, 4-1.3 g of (C6H5) -S'C12, 0.02 - of FeC13 are introduced into another ballot. and 2 g of AIC13.
On the whole, the two mixtures correspond to a ratio.
EMI0002.0079
and 30% of the silicon is found therein as a tetrafunctional derivative.
Each of the two mixtures is first heated slowly until about half of the chlorine present has disappeared. After cooling, the two mixtures are combined, heated again and the evolution of ethyl chloride resumes at a temperature of about 1200 C. It rises after two hours, heating to 152 C. and the evolution. ; a zeux decreases sharply. Cooled and added .100 cm3 of toluene.
The chlorine content is 12% of the original quantity. About half of the solvent is then distilled; the temperature rises to 127 C.
After cooling, the solvent removed by distillation is replaced and it is found that the chlorine content is now reduced to 2%. After treating the product as indicated in Example 1, 104 g of a viscous light yellow resin are obtained, giving, after dissolving, a fast-polymerizing varnish which, after curing in thin layers, gives a smooth and hard film.
Example 3: A reaction mixture of a ratio
EMI0003.0013
and containing 35% of silicon as a tetrafunctional derivative by means of 4 \ 2 g of (CH3) 2SiC12, 87.5 g of (C6H5) 2SiCl2 (purity:
94%), 72.4 g of Si (OC.H5) 4 and 2.1 g of SiCl 3. 4 g of AIC13 and 0.04 g of FeCl3 are added thereto and the mixture is slowly heated. The reaction begins at around 100 ° C. with the evolution of C2H5C1. The hand is held at a moderate rate by turning off the heating and reheating slowly if necessary, and, after 4 hours, the temperature is key 96 C. We cool and add 400 em3 of toluene in order to avoid gelation of the product. , reaction.
At the moment, the chlorine content is 35% of the original content. Then 1 g of anhydrous FeCl 2 is added and the mixture is heated for three hours at reflux.
The chlorine content falls to 4%. After having treated the product as indicated in Example 1, 108 g of very viscous, slightly cloudy resin are obtained which, after dissolving at 25% in toluene, gives a varnish to very fast polymerization.
For 4 resins, prepared by the process described, characterized in the following table by the ratio
EMI0003.0052
the silicon content in the form of a tetra-functional derivative in percent of the totality * of the silicon used, the silicon yield as well as the loss of organosilicon compounds during the baking of the varnishes were determined and the overall yield was calculated as fixed resins, forming a film, relative to the starting materials. On the other hand, 2 resins were prepared using the same starting materials by a hydrolysis process and the same definitions were made.
The indications concerning the overall yield make it possible to observe the superiority of the process according to the present invention.
