In Einzelfällen, so z.

In Fig. 1.
Methods and devices for the surface treatment of metals and metal alloys. The invention relates to a method and a device for the surface treatment of metals and metal alloys.
Various types of heat and chemical treatments are used to influence the openness of metals and metal alloys to the surface.
It is known, for example, to treat the heated workpieces with chemicals in order to achieve a structural change on the surface of the surface through chemical reactions, which results in the desired hardening.
In the case of steel, beer is formed, depending on the type of hardening agent used, for example during nitriding, l @: isenniti @ ide from iron molecules and nascent carbon or, during carburizing, I: i ", encarbides from iron molecules and carbon.
The prerequisite for the desired prior reactions is an increased temperature, chemical activity of the reacting substances - for example by utilizing the same in statu naszendi - and a certain reaction time.
The known processes for surface treatment require a considerable amount of time and expense and require high temperatures. In individual cases, e.g. B. in the case of nitriding of steel, the effect on the material with the aim of improving its properties is very little intensive.
Attempts have therefore been made on various occasions to shorten the relatively long reaction time or to lower the reaction temperature, for example using ultrasound. However, no notable successes have been recorded. The invention shows one way to achieve this goal.
The invention is based on the idea that the thermal movement of the reacting molecules should be regulated by a suitable means so that the reaction takes place more quickly and more intensively than if the reactants are left to their own devices. Ultrasound has been recognized as such a means of regulation, namely when the reaction substances are acted on from outside. When using high frequency ultrasound (for example 1 to 5 MHz), substance molecules that are detected by the ultrasound perform movements whose oscillation amplitude is, for example, in the order of magnitude of 10-7 m. In comparison, the free path of a nitrogen molecule at a temperature of 500 C, calculated from the thermal movement, is 10-7 m.
Accordingly, with regard to the free path of a gas molecule and the oscillation amplitude of a gas molecule under the influence of high-frequency ultrasound, there can be agreement of the order of magnitude, the ultrasound wave exerting a directing effect on the disordered thermal movement, so that the molecules of the substance that is detected by the ultrasonic wave are moved to an increased extent in the direction of the ultrasonic wave. The consequence of this superimposition is that the percentage of molecules moving in the direction of the ultrasonic wave is greater than in the non-sonicated room.
B. takes place on a workpiece to be treated by the ultra sound wave. Practical tests have proven the correctness of this consideration insofar as an intensification of the reaction caused solely by the thermal movement can be determined with additional external application of ultrasonic energy.
So there is. the invention: in the fact that the chemically active substances are exposed to the action of ultrasound. Advantageously, the reactants are sonicated at such a frequency and intensity that the free vibration amplitude imposed on the individual molecule of the reactant by the ultrasound sound vibration is of the order of magnitude of the free vibration amplitude defined as the statistical mean value of the thermal molecular movement Path length of the molecule.
The chemically active substances can, depending on the nature of the surface to be achieved - hardness, color, gas enrichment, protective layer formation or the like - in gaseous, liquid or solid aggregate. the heated work pieces are made to react under the action of ultrasound. The temperature of the workpieces is expediently in the range of thermal decomposition of the reac tion substances. If gases are used as reactants, the heated workpieces are preferably exposed to sound at low pressure and low speed of the reaction gases.
In order to make the entire surface of the workpieces accessible for treatment, a relative movement between the workpieces and the. Ultrasonic generators take place.
The method according to the invention can be implemented in many ways. The respective shape of the workpieces and the purpose of the surface treatment will determine the type of equipment required to carry out the process.
A simple embodiment of a device for surface treatment according to the invention is characterized by a lockable with. Reactants to be charged. Oven for receiving the workpieces, which contains at least one ultrasonic generator. The ultrasonic generators or the MTerl @ stücli: e can be arranged in the furnace in such a way that the ultrasonic waves are at an acute angle. to hit the workpiece.
The arrangement can also be made so that the ultrasonic generators and the workpieces can be moved relative to one another, in that either the ultrasonic generators or the ZVerkstüeke or both are moved in the furnace in such a way that the entire surface of the latter can be exposed to the sound. The relative movement between the ultrasonic generator and the workpiece can be controlled from outside the furnace.
According to a special embodiment of the invention, several ultrasonic generators can be attached to at least one wall of the furnace in a planar arrangement.
Some simple embodiments of devices according to the invention are shown in the drawing.

FIG. 7 is a section along line VII-VII in FIG. 6.
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through a device for liquid reactants.
9 is a schematic perspective view of an industrial plant for ultrasound case hardening.
As mentioned at the beginning, the chemical substances that react with the metal to be treated, in combination with the heat treatment, act too sluggishly to give the material a property different from its delivery condition in a shorter time. In order to accelerate and intensify the reaction when the temperature is reduced, further action is required. If one takes into account that z.
If, for example, the life of a nitrogen atom nascent from ammonia is about 1 second, it is clear that it must also be effective in this short period of time. But it can only do this if the material to be treated and the reaction gas themselves are in a ready-to-react state. This condition can be brought about by the use of ultrasound. The ultrasonic waves iei-set both the material structure and mainly the molecules of the reaction substance in vibrations, which cause an intimate touch of the molecules and thus a reaction acceleration and intensification.
It might seem obvious to use ultrasound energy to support the reaction, if there was not a priori reason against this consideration: the most important heat treatments for metals take place in temperature ranges above 600 C, while those with quartz work above 550 C. are no longer efficient.
Thus, the use of ultrasonic generators made of quartz would appear because of the high treatment temperatures. But the following was recognized:
Because the reaction process on the metal surface is best carried out in the temperature range of the thermal decomposition of the reactants, i.e., to stay with the example of nitrogen, which is nascent from NH3, between 350 and 550 C, it is not necessary for the actual heat treatment high temperatures necessary for the structural change - around 700 C for steel - but you can work at the low temperature of 500 C, which enables the use of ultrasonic generators made of quartz.
The described relationships are similar for other materials or reactants than those mentioned, e.g. B. with platinum and hydrogen, and it does not matter which special reaction substance is used in the individual case (air, NH3, N02, N0, CO, luminous gas, salts, molten salt or the like).
The reactants are advantageously exposed to ultrasound at a frequency and intensity whose oscillation amplitude corresponds to the order of magnitude of the free path, as the statistical mean value of the thermal molecular movement. This means that for a certain temperature of a certain reaction substance the free path is to be determined as the mean value of its thermal molecular movement taking place at this temperature (from tables) and then to select the ultrasound generation in such a way that the values mentioned are properly equal.
In practice, the ultrasonic frequencies to be used can therefore be in the range of 20 to 50 MHz and the sonication intensities at 5 to 50 Wlem2 ultrasonic frequency and intensity are depending on the material to be treated, its temperature and the selected solid, liquid or gaseous reaction 5 : colors vary. In individual cases, a trial test will allow the optimal data to be determined within the framework of the information given.
If you work with gaseous reactive substances, it is advantageous to use low gas pressures and flow rates for the purpose of further intensifying the reaction.
In tests with steel for the purpose of increasing the hardness by nitriding, pressures of 7.0 to 100 nin the WS and speeds of 1 to 50 cm / sec (depending on the diameter of the gas line) and ultrasonic frequencies of \? up to 5 MFIz and intensities of 5 W / cm proved to be two-dimensional.
The ultrasound used can be generated by other methods besides piezoelectric quartz or crystals with similar behavior (e.g. tourmaline). Depending on the design of the sound system, magnetostrictive: nickel rods or ultrasound sirens can be used as sound generators.
When sounding the @Verkteile is. the formation of standing waves is undesirable because the E effect suffers. The ultrasonic waves work better when they touch the workstyle to be treated, i.e. not hit it at a right angle, but at an acute angle.
To achieve the greatest possible coverage of the clesanite surface of the workpieces to be treated, the workpieces expediently experience a pelative movement to the ultrasound generators during the reaction treatment. Such a movement can be achieved in a wide variety of ways, for example by the fact that the work pieces stand still and the ultrasonic generators are moved along their surface, or that the sound generators are fixed in the furnace and the work pieces are moved through the laser reverberation field.
Likewise, both the workpieces and the ultrasonic generators can be moved at the same time. Whether the movements are translatory or rotational is evidently immaterial, and the means by which they are aimed is left to the discretion of the specialist in each individual case.
The ultrasonic single action results in a significant shortening of the heat treatment. Nourishing z. B. the normal nitriding of a steel to increase its hardness requires six hours of treatment, according to the new process an @ esc @ a.lluugs- duration of one to two hours is sufficient to achieve a tight reaction layer. In Fig. 1.
a laboratory system for the surface treatment of workpieces by means of reaction gases is shown schematically. The VVerkstiiek in the form of the test rod 1 is inserted into an electrically heated furnace 3 which is to be sealed tightly by means of the closure plate 2 drawn in the open position, the temperature of which can be regulated with the aid of the temperature controller 4.
The heating energy is taken from your network via line 5. In the locking plate? there are two openings 6 and 7 for the gas inlet and outlet. The opening 6 is the reaction gas, for. B. NI-I? "From the gas generator 8, via the gas scrubber 9, the dryer 10 and the line 11, flows through the reaction chamber 12 and escapes through the opening 7 into the 13 leading to the collector Line 14.
In the reaction space 12, which instead of in the closure plate? An ultrasound radiator (quartz) 15 can also be provided in the furnace 3, which is excited via the line 1.6 from the Iloclifi-equence generator 17 with the coil set 18. The generator is connected to the network via line 1.9.
When the furnace is closed, the ultrasonic radiator 15 assumes the position 15 'indicated by the dotted line directly opposite the outer face of the heated test rod 1, so that the ultrasonic energy can act on the rod from the outside at the same time as the reaction gas, when the plant is put into operation. is.
The in Fig-. The industrial installation illustrated in FIG. 2 works in principle exactly like the laboratory installation according to FIG. 1, it is only more extensive. Several ovens 20, whose interior equipment is described below with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4, are in series next to each other and are with their heating lines 21, 31. ' connected to the network and with the lines 22, 22 ', 22 "to the HF splitter 24 connected to the HF generator 23. The 500 V Iloehfreqtieiierator 23 can be mobile. A gas generator or.
Gasometer 24 supplies the furnaces 20 via a collecting line 25 and the branch lines 26, = '6' with working gas, while the exhaust gas flows off at the furnace ends via the pipes 27. Stopcocks 28, 29 in the inlets and outlets complete the pipe system, while the conditions inside the furnace are to be monitored by means of the manometer 30 and thermometer 31.
Inside the furnace (Fig. 3 and 4) are except cien. Fixed and movable ultrasonic radiators 33 and 34, respectively, are attached to electric heaters 32, specifically in such a way that they irradiate the workpieces lying on the table 35, if possible in a grazing manner.
In order to be able to change the extent of the sonicated room (indicated by dashed lines), see the ultrasonic emitters 3.1 on a bracket 36 which can be shifted from the outside by means of a handle 37 (FIGS. 2 and 3). Of course, the ultrasonic radiator 33 or 34 can also be arranged differently than is shown, for example on a rotating bracket, which can also be displaced in the longitudinal direction, such as the workpiece support any suitable shape, e.g.
B. can have in the form of chains, bands, hooks and the like, in order to present the workpieces in the appropriate manner to the sound systems.
The reaction chamber 12 mentioned with regard to FIG. 1 can have the shape shown in FIG. 5, that is to say that of a box 38, the front surface 39 of which forms the furnace closure. From the furnace side, the workpieces 40 protrude into the chamber 38 via appropriately designed openings which are sealed against the workpiece 40 in a suitable manner.
It can be seen from FIGS. 6 and 7 that the workpieces 40 themselves can also produce the seal, in that their conically shaped heads protrude into the likewise conical openings 41 and are held firmly and tightly therein by a type of bayonet lock 42. Such workpiece arrangements are advantageously used for testing and laboratory purposes. The quartz holder 43, which contains the ultrasonic transmitter, is screwed into the closure surface 39 from the outside.
Its position in relation to the workpiece 40 is such that the sound beams s sent out hit the workpiece at an acute angle. The HF connection is made via the terminals 44, and a thermocouple 45, the reaction current of which is fed to a pyrometer (not shown), is used for temperature control.
If the workpieces are to be sonicated in a gaseous atmosphere, the gas flows via the inlet and outlet nozzles 46 and 47 (FIG. 5) through the reaction chamber 38. A pressure gauge 48 can also be provided in the inlet line 46.
The chamber 38 can also be used to hold liquid reactants, e.g. B. a salt melt, serve. In this case, there is no need for pipe connections, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, which show a section of a reaction chamber for sonication in molten salts. Fig. 8 shows a section through a case hardening furnace in which the hardening process takes place by chemical conversion with the action of ultrasound. The crucible 50 for the molten salt 51 is accommodated in the furnace housing 49. The crucible 50 is heated by the electrical heater 52 from the connection line 53.
The carrier or grate 54 for the hardened material is located in it and is closed by means of a closure piece 55, while the outer cover 56 covers the entire housing 49. On the bottom of the crucible 50, the ultrasonic quartz crystals 57 are arranged like a mosaic, so that the molten salt 51 is penetrated by the ultrasonic beams s from the entire bottom surface. The sound beams 57 are excited by an HF generator (not shown in particular) via the line 58.
Since the emission of ultrasound in gases is subject to a high level of absorption, when using a liquid as a sound-bearing medium, an intensification of the effect observed with gases is to be expected, because liquids absorb the ultrasound energy only slightly. According to this, the promoting influence of the ultrasonic energy on the reactions taking place on metal surfaces can be determined to a greater extent.
Such ovens 49 can, as illustrated in FIG. 9, ver be united to industrial plants. They are then conveniently arranged in series, each monitor züz through heat meter 59 and receive their heating energy from a common power line 53, as well as the HF energy via the lines 58 and the HF distributor 60 from the HF generator 61, which in turn is also connected to the network via line 62.
