Apparatus for husking cereal grains. This invention relates to an apparatus for shelling key cereal grains, and more particularly to an apparatus for shelling oat grains by impact.
One important fold in the grinding of oat gilaiis is the removal of the husk of the oatmeal, which is relatively easy by frying between grindstones or by the use of horizontal grinders filled with emery, as the Key grain husks are scaly and quite loosely.
In any case, to avoid damaging the groats, the determination of the dimensions is very important because the distance between the grinding wheels is fixed; thus, oats are generally graded into three or six sizes or more, depending on length and width, for example large, medium, small and fine oats. This requires additional handling, more tools and more key time and expense.
The invention a. The aim is a simple and economical device which eliminates the key necessity of this classification and which also lightly cleans the groats to remove the hairy parts.
According to the invention, such an apparatus is activated by a disc-shaped rotor arranged horizontally and subdivided by centrifugal impeller vanes, a device for rotating the rotor at a variable speed, a device for bringing to the rotor rotating in a current. the grains to be treated are substantially uniform, and an impact surface surrounding the rotor and having a rough surface against which the grains are thrown from the rotor by centrifugal force, so as to separate the bark from the gruel.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a husking apparatus, part of which is broken away and other parts are shown in cross section.
Fig. 1A is a partial view in vertical section of an alternative embodiment of a detail of this device.
Fig. 2 is a partial view, in horizontal section, on a larger scale, along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on a larger scale, of a detail of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 4, 5 and 6 are schematic views, to. large scale, showing different phases of shelling.
In the. practical realization of the hulling process of oats, advantage is taken of the particular characteristics of the structure of an oat grain. The oat grain com takes the husk or rind and the kernel usually called oatmeal. The oat bark itself has a lamelate structure comprising several particles in the form of thin elongated leaves which are. very narrow in comparison to their length and are only attached to the oatmeal at one end. The end of the oatmeal to which the leaves of the bark are attached will be called the germ end of the oatmeal.
These bark leaves surround the other end of the gruel fairly loosely; consequently, they do not form a top or a point as they do, at the germ end of the oatmeal, where they are, attached. In other words, an oat kernel is shaped like a projectile, such as a rocket, with the germ-side end of the oats resembling the head of the rocket, and the loose leaves or bark layers. at the other end of oats resembling the fins of the posterior end of the spindle. On the other hand, it has been found that these thin sheets of bark turn the oatmeal so freely that they can be easily separated from it, except at the end; wanders where they are. fixed.
In the shelling apparatus which is the object. of this invention, the oat kernels are projected like tiny rockets. It is possible that a large proportion of the grains during their trajectory take a position similar to that of a rocket, that is to say that the germ placed at one end of the gruel is heavier than the rest of the grain. this one, that end of the oat kernel becomes the forward end as the grain travels along its path, tan say that the loose loose ends of the leaves of the bark form the rear end of the kernel .
Noticeable speed is imparted to the different grains which are directed against an impact surface, which is irregular in nature like that of a body acting by abrasion, such as a coarse grinding wheel. When the front end or germ end of the oat kernels strikes this ruinous surface, the. grain trajectory being different from the normal to this rough surface, the front end of each grain is abruptly stopped and, in reality, it is, momentarily maintained by a part of the rough surface.
The germ end of the oats is consequently subjected at the moment of impact to a considerable force which tends to reduce the adhesion between the oatmeal and the bark. It is. very likely that all oat grains do not occupy. not this position during projection. In reality, the ends of some part of the oat kernels opposite the germ ends can. form the front ends and strike the rough surface first. Under these conditions, this softer end of the oats may dampen the shock somewhat and reduce speed a bit, but not enough to suppress the hulling action.
As the porridge is much denser in structure and represents, as a complete aggregate, the major part of the weight of the grain, it has a much greater inertia than the light, thin leaves of the bark. As a result, it detaches freely and separates from them upon impact on the rough face. This, obviously, reduced. noticeably the speed of the oatmeal, but due to its compact nature, the latter continues to move at a considerable speed, which is favorable.
On the other hand, the sheets of bark thus separated being relatively very light and presenting large surfaces, they undergo a very important slowing down and continue to move, but at a considerably reduced speed, in a way as if they were fluttering. This reduces attrition to a negligible degree, so that unwanted bran flour is removed from the final product.
The oatmeal separated from its bark is. covered with tiny, hair-like filaments. These filaments and their particles are undesirable in the final product, so that advantage is taken. the relatively high speed retained by the husked oatmeal to remove these hairs by a grating action as the oatmeal continues to rub against the rough surface. This grating action is prolonged for a time long enough to tear off to a great extent the hairy filaments of the oatmeal. These filaments, as well as the light leaves of the bark, are easily removed or separated from the gruel in any suitable manner, for example by suction or subsequent sifting.
The machine shown in the drawing is equipped with a disc-shaped rotor, arranged horizontally and radially partitioned by means of centrifugal impeller vanes, the rotor receiving a current or uniform flow of grain by means of a device for adjusting the grain. flow (read grain current. When this grain is brought into the rotor, it is subjected to a centrifugal action, so that a very high speed is imparted to each grain, which then runs a trajectory similar to that of a rocket, as described above.
A rough-surfaced impact liner, similar to that of a relatively large grinding wheel, surrounds the rotor; the grains are launched or projected against this surface in such a way that the trajectory of the various grains is inclined with respect to the impact surface at the point of impact, rather than being normal to this surface. Thus, the grains have, at the moment of impact, a speed with radial and peripheral components and consequently swirl on the surface of the. front trim, to fall from it under the action of gravity.
The lower part of the filling is in the form of a skirt against which the husked groats rub, thus producing a grating action which removes the fine hairy filaments from the groats.
Fig. 1 shows a casing 10 and a deorticator mechanism which is enclosed therein, supported by a frame 12 which rests on uprights or supports 14. A rotor generally indicated by 16 is fixed on the vertical shaft 1.8 which rotates for example an electric motor and a variable speed transmission indicated generally at 20, mounted on the casing 10.
The variable speed drive portion of the transmission 20 may be of any suitable type, but is preferably set up such that the rotor can easily reach different speeds to accommodate the varying conditions in which the oats are and also. different kinds of oats. The material is fed into the dehuller through one or more inlet pipes 22 which lead it into an annular slot indicated generally at 24, the width of which can be adjusted, as described below, to obtain a uniform flow and distribution of material in the rotor at the desired speed.
The rotor 16 comprises a plate or a disc forming a bottom 16a of circular and approximately planar shape, but the central part of which is established so as to have a frustoconical section 27 and a conical hub 26 which fits on the shaft 18. A fixed circular screen 60 is attached to the casing 10 and surrounds the hub 26, the screen having a shape such that the flow of material passing through the slot 24 is directed outward over the section 27 of the rotor. .
Each grain is thus deposited at approximately the same distance from the center of the rotor which turns rapidly and rejects the grain under the action of centrifugal force towards the edge where it strikes the packing 28, as described in more detail below. -after. The processed material descends by gravity into a hopper 30 which is firmly secured to the shell 10a of the husker by bolts 32, wingnuts 34 and ears 36, the casing in turn being secured to the bottom of the casing 10d. in any suitable manner.
The upper edge 30a of the hopper 30 is engaged in a housing 10b of the housing 10a, so as to prevent the lateral displacement of the hopper and to dampen the vibrations. An outlet 38 is provided at the base of the hopper to discharge the mixture of groats, bark and fragments of bark.
The device which forms the adjustable slot 24 is shown in FIGS. 1 and 3. A distributor 62 placed above the frustoconical surface 27 of the rotor is held in place by the thread 64, formed on its outer surface, which screws into a ring 63.
The latter has a cylindrical shape and is placed inside an opening made for this purpose in the housing 10a, the upper edge 63a being provided with a flange to project laterally on the ring and rest under the part. lower 22a of the inlets 22 which is capable of adapting to this upper edge and thus holding the ring firmly in place. Only a relatively short segment 61a of dispenser 62 is threaded, the remainder being indented, except at the top where a flange 65 is left.
As a result, there is. no danger that the distributor 62 could close the. slot 24 either protrudes from ring 63 and falls onto rotor 16, nor does it rise above thread 61 and thus allow the passage of an undesirable flow of material.
Below the threaded segment 64a of the dispenser 62, the latter has an elongated section, in the form of a skirt 61, which extends below the upper part of a disc 44 of the rotor 16.
The interior 62a has a taper, so as to form a funnel which extends to a ridge 62b which constitutes one of the sides of the slot 24. Inside the dispenser 62 is fitted a screen 60. which has play around the hub 26 of the rotor 16 and which is firmly fixed to the upper edge 22b of the inlets 22. The screen 60 is approximately cylindrical at its upper part 60a and flares out into a frustoconical part 60b at the top. a point located below the edge 62b of the distributor 62.
The slot 24 through which the material passes is indicated by arrows in FIG. 3 and is thus formed by the opening existing between the section 60b of the screen 60 and the edge 626 of the dispenser 62. As the section 60b extends to a point below the edge 62b and has a The taper which deviates from it, it is possible by vertically adjusting the position of the distributor 62 to vary the dimensions of the slot 24.
In order to make this adjustment without removing the rotor 16 from the huller, pegs 66 are attached to opposite sides of the distributor 62, so that the latter can be rotated so much. in the direction of movement of the aig2rilles of a watch than in the opposite direction, by means of a key 70 in the form of [J which can be introduced into holes 68 made in the rotor 16 for this purpose (fig. 1 ).
The throttle feeder thus functions to receive the. material and distribute it in an annular current on the surface of revolution 27 of the rotor 16. It follows that a certain orientation is. given to the different brass individually and that only a few grains are deposited on each segment of the rotor at a time. By keeping the screen 60 fixed and making it protrude beyond the lower edge of the funnel of the dispenser 62, the opening of the can be varied. slot simply by adjusting the position of the distributor 62 in the vertical direction.
Referring to fi-. 1 and 2, it can be seen that a series of radial vanes 40 are mounted on the upper surface of the lower plate 16a of the rotor 16, two of these vanes being shown in elevation at. fig. 1, while FIG. 2 shows sixteen in plan.
On the top of these blades is mounted a flat annular disc 44. The key outer edges of the blades 40 and of the disc 44 are bevelled, as shown in FIG. 1, for a purpose which will be indicated below. A number of screws 42 pass through the disc 44 and the vanes 40 and are screwed into the lower plate 16g to hold the various parts in place, forming.
thus radial passages in the rotor between the upper 44 and lower surfaces 16g key the latter. Therefore, the movement of individual grains on their surfaces is noticeable. radial. The effect. of this provision is. double.
Not only. the speed printed on the grains is maximum, but the attrition of the latter is reduced to. a minimum, as the vanes prevent the grains from sliding on the upper surface of the lower plate 16g. other than along the base of the vanes. This prevents or at least substantially reduces the production of fine particles which are relatively difficult to separate during. the last stages of grinding. In addition, the grains tend to be placed in the continuation. from each other and follow uniform paths, as described above.
The rotor 16 is fixed in a removable manner to the shaft 18 by a nut 46 which is screwed at the end of the shaft 18 in a cavity 54 formed in the hub of the rotor. Tree 18 has. the taper in the direction of its threaded end and a part 48 of the hub 26 has a cylindrical bore to form only two bearing surfaces 50 and 52, so as to facilitate the removal of the rotor from the tree. The removal is further facilitated by the provision of an arra cheur nut 58 which is screwed into a thread 56 of the. cavity 54 when nut 46 is not in place and is applied to the lower end of shaft 18 to disengage the rotor hub from shaft 18.
This arrangement makes it possible to easily remove the rotor 16 from the bottom of the decorator for cleaning and adjusting the members when necessary.
As was briefly indicated above, the lining 28 surrounds the rotor 16 so as to stop the grains projected at high speed by the latter. Liner 28 is preferably made of an unglazed ceramic material to form a rough surface exhibiting high friction qualities. Its outer face is cylindrical and its dimensions are determined so that it is slightly separated laterally from the housing 10a. The upper part 28a has an extra thickness and its upper surface 28b is flat and fits exactly against the casing 10a, on which it is fixed by any suitable device.
The maximum internal diameter is found near the lower part which forms an elongated skirt 76, the lower end 76a of which is bevelled to fit the profile of the hopper 30. In this arrangement, the gasket 28 is firmly attached to the shell of the dehuller, so that the interval which separates it from the periphery of the rotor 16 will be maintained, even under the strongest vibration conditions. The extra thickness forms a firm base and dampens vibrations.
The impact surface 74 is located between the extra thickness 28a and the skirt 76 of the lining 28. It has 1-me conical part placed between these two parts, this conical part having approximately the same angle as the outer edge of the blades 40 and of the disc 44 of the rotor 16 and thus forms an oblique surface against which the oat kernels are decorated and then deflected downwards.
The space between the bevelled surfaces of the rotor 16 and the tapered portion of the liner 28 forms a gap 72 in which material is thrown before hitting the liner 28, thus allowing the complex guiding forces which act on each grain to impact. time needed to develop. The dehuller is thus provided with a strong fixed abrasive lining against which the material is projected to be dehulled and diverted from the edge of the ro tor from top to bottom to undergo a new cleaning action on the periphery of the inner face of the. skirt 76.
Fig. 1A shows another form of packing 28, generally indicated at 90. Here, as in the case of. trim shown in fig. 1, the liner 90 surrounds the rotor 16 and is made of an unglazed ceramic material having a rough impact surface, against which the oat kernels are thrown.
The gasket 90 has a cylindrical outer surface 91 with a diameter slightly less than the internal diameter of the housing 10a, so as to be able to be easily mounted therein leaving a slight clearance between the gasket and the housing. Liner 90 has a top-to-bottom outwardly tapered or flared surface 92, the upper edge 92a of which is preferably placed in a plane above the plane of the rotor 16, while the lower edge 92b is located well. below the lower part of the rotor.
In some cases, it has been found that a surface such as 92 is preferable because while being absolutely effective as a grating face, it does not cause the grits to break as might occur when employing the form of packing shown. felt in fig. 1. In all other ratios, packing 90 acts roughly the same as packing 28.
The husking apparatus operates as follows A stream of material, for example oat kernels, is. brought by the inlets 22 and passes into the annular slot 24, previously adjusted, between the screen 60 and the distributor 62 to fall on the rotating frustoconical surface of the section 27 of the rotor 16. It will be noted here that the skirt 61 of the distributor 62 prevents the material from reaching the upper face of the disc 44 so that the distribution must be done through the radial passages between the vanes 40.
The individual grains are quickly rejected from the hub along the vanes 40, gaining speed as they pass, and most of them orient so that the germ end of the grain is placed forward, and when 'they are driven from the edge of the rotor at an angle between the tangent and a line 45 on the tangent, they are thrown at high speed through the gap 72 against the impact surface 74 of the liner "28. When they hit the filling 28, the grains become stripped in accordance with the process illustrated schematically in Figures 4, 5 and 6.
An oriented grain 80 is shown in FIG. 4 as it approaches the impact surface 74 of the trim 28 at an angle, the seed end 80a where the bark is attached to the gruel being placed forward and the free end 80b behind . When the nose 80a hits the rough surface of the trim 28, as shown in. fig. 5, its movement is somewhat stopped and delayed, because this rough surface acts as a brake on the nose of the grain.
The gruel 82 being heavier and having a considerable moment of inertia, continues its movement and tears from its bark which envelops it freely, as shown in FIG. 5.
r ig. 6 shows the grits 82 completely separated from its bark 84 and continuing to move forward, while the bark 84 is stopped against the impact surface 74. At this point, the gruel has a considerable residual moment of inertia, so that, when it is deflected downward as a result of the inclination of the surface 74, it rubs against the skirt 76 of the lining 28 and thus removes the bristles 86 from its surface. The groats as well as the bark are deflected downwards and finally fall under the action of gravity into the hopper 30 and through the outlet port 38 to pass to the mill.
