Process for the preparation of an aliphatic, complex-forming diamino-N, N'-tetraacetic acid. It is. known that organic nitrogen compounds with more than one -CiI2 COOH group on a basic nitrogen atom have their own properties, the formation of precipitates from alkaline earth,
To prevent earth and heavy metal salts or to dissolve deposits of these metals that have already formed. From the group of active substances, ethylenediamine-N, N'-tetra.acetic acid is particularly noteworthy, which is very useful in the textile industry for rendering the hardness components in water harmless. In addition to this compound, all other proposed aliphatic N-polyacetic acids are of minor importance and usually much less effective.
It has now been found that, surprisingly, the N, N'-tetraacetic acids of co, co'-diamino-ethylene ethers or thioethers of the general formula
EMI0001.0023
in which: X denotes an oxygen or sulfur atom and the index n has the value zero or a lower whole number, which have the above-mentioned good properties to an excellent extent.
It is particularly surprising that the compounds according to the invention, in spite of their higher molecular weight, are in their action of ethylene diamine-N, N'-tetraacetic acid, and even exceed this under certain circumstances.
The new compounds are made from primary co, co'-diamino compounds of ethylene mono- or polyethers, in the latter case preferably from lower polyethers, or from corresponding Tllioätllern by reaction of 1 mole of ether with at least 4 moles of one in the a-position reactive substituted acetic acid or its salts are obtained.
Instead of the free carboxylic acid, it is also possible to use reactive derivatives with a modified carboxyl group which are reactive in the a position and which are converted into the free carboxyl group for the purpose of Sehluss. Monochloroacetic acid and monobromoacetic acid may be mentioned as acetic acids which are reactive substituted in the a position.
The esters or nitriles thereof, and also formaldehyde cyanohydrin, are suitable derivatives with a modified carboxyl group and which are substituted in a reactive manner in the a position. Instead of the cyanohydrins, mixtures of aldehyde and hydrocyanic acid can also be used. The liver is converted into the free carboxyl groups by acidic or, preferably, alkaline saponification.
Primary a), co'-diamino compounds of ethylene mono- or polyethers or thioethers which can be used according to the invention are mainly di- (ss-aminoethyl) ethers, di- (ss-aminoethyl) thioethers and the Di- (ss-a.minoethyl) -glycol ether because of their easy accessibility in question.
However, even higher, diprimary c), co'-diamino-polyethylene polyethers or thioethers and furthermore mixed w, co'-diaminopolyethylene oxydo-thioethers can also be used, such as, for example, the a), oi-diamino-tetraä. thvjen-t.ri- ether, the (o, co'-diamino-pentaethylene-tetra- ether or the symmetrical w,
co'-diamino-tetraethylene-dioxydothioether and also teehnische mixtures of such co,) '-diaminopolyethylene-polyether. The new aliphatic diamino-N, N'-tetraacetic acids are white powders, the alkali salts of which are readily soluble in water and which have the property of keeping the hardness constituents of water in a complex bond in solution or of dissolving precipitates that have already occurred, so that they are suitable for these purposes in the textile and textile auxiliary industries.
In particular, in an alkaline-aqueous medium, they have a large complex formation constant for alkaline earth complexes, so that they can be used, for example, as additives to soap.
The individual compounds according to the invention often also show a specifically different behavior towards certain alkaline earth metal ions, so that they can be analytically determined alongside one another. For example, ethylene glycol bis (ss-aminoethyl ether) -N, N'-tetraacetic acid can be used for the titrimetric determination of calcium in addition to strontium.
The present patent now relates to a process for the preparation of an aliphatic, complex-forming diamino-N, N'-tetraacetic acid. The process is characterized in that 1 mol of ss, ss'-diainino diethyl ether is reacted with 4 31o1 of a haloacetic acid.
The new compound obtained, the ss, ss'- diamino - diethyl ether - N, N '- tetraacetic acid, is a white powder. It should be used as a textile auxiliary. Example: 416 parts of chloroacetic acid are dissolved in 900 parts of water and, while cooling, with 587 parts of 30% sodium hydroxide solution at mau. 10 neutralized.
Then 104 parts of ss, ss'-di-amino-diethyl ether are added and the re action solution in a water bath to 60 he warms. The dropwise addition of a further 587 parts of 30% sodium hydroxide solution ensures a permanent, weakly plienolphthalein-alkaline reaction. The exothermic conversion is kept at 70 to 75 by temporarily cooling the reaction solution.
After the addition of the sodium hydroxide solution has ended, the mixture is heated to 90 to 95 for a further 5 hours to complete the reaction. After filtration of the reaction solution, 30% hydrochloric acid is added until the reaction is weakly Congo acidic, and about 2500 parts are then stirred at a moderate temperature. Methanol. After standing for a long time, the tetraacetic acid formed slowly separates out.
By recrystallization from aqueous alcohol, the ss, ss'-Diaminodiethyläthei - N, N'-tetraacetic acid can be obtained in pure form.
The compound has a high complex formation constant for alkaline earth ions and is therefore suitable for keeping the hardness components of the water in a complex bond or for dissolving precipitates that have already formed, caused by alkaline earth metal ions.
